Terry Brooks is amazing. One of the best series ever. Fans of fantasy that have not read this series yet...do yourself a favor and get it now.
Terry is on my insta buy list! I was not disappointed in this book!!! The rich world building and the characters are right in the same realm as the earlier books. I could immerse myself in Shanara all day, every day! Highly recommend to new readers interested in High Fantasy that stands in line with the likes of Lord of the Rings, Pern, Game of Thrones.
This was a good read. I appreciated the character development on the characters and was happy that it continued moving along. I can't wait for the next book.
“Skaar” is the second install in Brooks’ “The Fall of Shannara” series. The book was highly engaging and enjoyable. As I have stated about Brooks in the past, he is a formulaic writer. Seldom does he diverge from his successful formula. His writing process often leaves the reader feeling as if they have read this story before.
“Skaar” sees the Four Lands being invaded by a foreign invader. To this reviewer, it reminds of times the Forbidden was failing and the Four Lands would be subject to demonic invasions. Fortunately, the Skaar are mortal. Readers are treated to political intrigue on how the Skaar conquer their adversaries.
While the book is formulaic, it was entertaining. Longtime Brooks’ fans are sure to enjoy this latest chapter in the Shannara series.

Having read every book that Terry Brooks has written, I have noticed that his past few efforts seemed to be "mailed in." Plots were thin and characters not well developed - or that it was assumed that the reader knew the character so well that no useful background information was ever offered. The Skaar Invasion is a welcome change. Terry Brooks has introduced a new pantheon of characters who interact authentically with his established characters. He has created situations that propel the overarching story forward. It's good to see that, even as he wraps up his great body of work, his mastery is still there.
Terry Brooks world of Shannara spans generations. Fans new and old continue to be amazed at one of the earliest world and character building Fantasy authors as he brings us his latest dark tale. Intriguing, edgy and captivating, The Skaar Invasion draws us closer to the hopelessness felt in the face of an ominous and faceless enemy. Will Paranor hold the answers? Can hope be found in an old member of the Order? What force can conquer trolls and other dark creatures?
I’ve always had a soft spot for Terry Brooks’ Shannara novels, as they were part of what made me love fantasy and science fiction from an early age. Although the newer ones were of varying quality, I still remained a loyal reader. The Skaar Invasion is one of the better of the recent installments in the series. The novel picks up from where The Black Elfstone ends. Drisker Arc is trapped in limbo inside the Druid fortress of Paranor. Dar Leah is seeking Drisker’s apprentice Tarsha in hopes she can help free Drisker. Meanwhile, the Skaar advanced force is moving further into the Four Lands and is manipulating both the Federation and the elves, and Clizia Porse is plotting the death of Drisker Arc and a new Druid order of her design and under her control.
The style of narration allows the reader to be privy to each character’s thoughts and feelings. It leaves little ambiguity about the nature of each of the characters and their plans. The story is fairly straightforward, with most of the action devoted toward furthering the plot and setting up the next novel. I believe that the climax of the tale will take place in the next novel. Not a lot happens, but The Skaar Invasion is a necessary intermediary between The Black Elfstone and what is to come. I’m looking forward to seeing what comes next.

I would give this book a 2.5. It’s not bad, it’s just not all that good either. I didn’t hate anyone or love anyone (hero or villain). I didn’t really care. This book is like when you say to someone “hey, why don’t we go to that place anymore?”, so then you go there and are reminded. It’s not horrible, it’s just not for you. Unless I read raving reviews I am pretty sure I am done with this series.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review through Netgalley. Brooks has done it again with yet another tale of shannarra. Great read!
I've always been a big fan of Terry Brooks and I absolutely devoured the first two books in this series. They were epic. The story line is a spin off of the Shannara Chronicles. We follow several young magic users as they are molded into Druids. The second book switched points of view a lot more than I would have liked, but I was totally enthralled with the story, so it doesn't matter.
Great read!
