Measurements are in both Metric and US Units
What impressed me most about this cookbook was that the measurements for each recipe are given in both metric and U.S. units, which makes this a handy cookbook for just about anyone. There are lots of mouth-watering photos include, which I found especially helpful since I’m a visual person. I don’t think I’ll be making the octopus dishes though, and I wasn’t thrilled with the pizza dishes, but that’s just my taste. Although I like the idea of shaved Brussels sprouts on a pizza.
Three ingredients dominate this book: avocado, basil and pizza dough. Gaby found a use for these in many recipes throughout the book. There’s also guacamole on practically every sandwich, but, then, this is “California Food”.
Peel the chickpeas! Loved the hummus recipes, and Gaby reveals the secret to creamy hummus is to peel the chickpeas! Although for the lemon and garlic hummus I think I’ll leave out the sumac. Although the spice is from a different plant than the irritant in your yard, the name stops me cold and I don’t usually buy a spice I probably won’t use again.
The book looks generally good. I got access to excerpt of this book. I wished to have access to the full book to provide a more deep review.
This book was almost hard to read, in the sense that m,y mouth was watering, and my stomach was growling the whole time. The recipes are simple, and easy to follow... even for a newbie in the kitchen. The photos were simply stunning, and had me racing to the kitchen to check my cupboards to see what ingredients I had on hand, and what recipe I could make immediately. Everything looked so delicious, and I could almost smell the scents wafting from the pages. AMAZING!
I have received a much appreciated digital copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
As a longtime reader of Gaby's blog, I was excited to see this new cookbook. The recipes sound delicious, but the absolutely gorgeously styled and lush photos really make this cookbook pop. Recipes I'm excited to try include the shaved brussels sprouts and bacon pizza, roasted mushroom and onion quesadillas, and the "Mom's Every Night Cucumber Salad." The recipes tend towards the "upscale casual" style, seeming accessible but elevated.
What's Gaby Cooking by Gaby Dalkin is a beachy California-style cookbook. You will find lots of recipes using California-inspired ingredients such as avocado, You will find a section called Kitchen Staples that lists pantry ingredients you can use to prepare meals.
Some of the recipes you'll find include:
Matt's Bean and Cheese Panchos
Gaby's Famous Guacamole
Mango Tuna Poke Bowl
Lazy Girl Chicken Enchiladas with Cumin Cream
Fish Tacos with Pineapple Mango Salsa
Palm Springs Date Shake

I would like to thank Gaby Dalkin, Abrams and NetGalley for the opportunity to review this book before publication. I have been a reader of the author's cooking blog for many years and admire her public persona, branding skills, connection with her readers and above all, her reliably fresh and delicious food. This book is a note-perfect extension of the blog with its bright, vibrant photography and styling (such a pleasant contrast to the dark tone seen in so many cookbooks lately) and wildly flavorful yet accessible recipes. Dalkin has the ability to create layered tastes and textures using ingredients that most of us either have at home or at our nearest grocery store -- no need for ordering a bunch of obscure spices. Her voice as an author is bubbly and relatable, and the pictures are stunning. Highly recommended for public libraries.
I've been following Gaby's blog for quite awhile and was excited about this cookbook. It did not disappoint! There are so many pages that I have bookmarked to make - my personal favorite is Street Corn Pizza, which combines two of my favorite things. The idea of "California food" can bring some sunshine into anyone's kitchen!
The recipes in What’s Gaby Cooking are fresh, simple and easy to follow. I love that the recipes were real and not overly fancy or complicated. They were for everyday meals and snacks. I also enjoyed the personal introduction to the cookbook and the page about kitchen staples. I think that page will be handy for those who are just starting out cooking at home or just looking for a kitchen refresh.
A bonus, for me anyway, was the beautiful design of the cookbook and the photography. They went well together and didn't distract from the recipes.
I have to say I am a huge Alton Brown fan and it was his praise for this book that drew me to it. What hooked me though, were the recipes, the gorgeous pictures that accompany each recipe(a real sticking point for me when cookbooks don't include pictures of the final products), and the always appreciated focus on seasonal and fresh ingredients. Finally, I cook a lot, so I am always looking for new recipes and new flavor combinations, and this book did not disappoint.
I love pesto, so I made the Pesto Lasagna Bolognese(perfect on a cold NY winter night), Shaved Brussels Sprouts and Bacon Pizza(yummy), and the Cheesy Pulled Pork Sandwiches with Jalapeno Slaw. My significant other who rivals Jeff Mauro, the Food Network Sandwich King said this was 'The Best Sandwich' he had ever eaten. This cookbook covers everything from Breakfast to Brunch, Appetizers, Sweet Treats, Bowls and so much more. I plan to try 2 or 3 recipes a week and at that rate, I am set with new ideas for quite a while. This will be a go-to staple on my cookbook shelf and I will be getting a physical copy on publication day.
Thank you, Gaby Dalkin, Abrams and NetGalley for the digital copy to read and review. Alton Brown isn't the only one who really liked Gaby's cookbook.
A lovely, colorful collection of recipes great for anytime of the year. I love the variety and easy of many of these recipes that will produce fresh and often healthy meals.
One of my favorite bloggers whose cookbook does not disappoint! The recipes are clean, simple and yummy looking!
5 big stars for What’s Gaby Cooking for its elegant, but simple, recipes ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
THIS is the cookbook I would bring out for entertaining. While I didn’t find the California angle that different than many of the other cookbooks I utilize, I was pleased that the dishes are stunning (so much color!), but completely approachable. Even things that sound fancy are easy to make with a short ingredient list and list of steps.
If you are a cookbook picture person, like me, you will be LOVE that every recipe has a full color photo. Not only that, but the food stylist gets an A+ for the arrangements and beauty. WOW. I’m not sure I can assemble in the same way, or even close, but I am going to try my best!
I also noted while this is not a vegetarian, vegan (there are definitely meat-centered meals), or whole foods approach to cooking, there was limited use of processed ingredients in many recipes, and an emphasis on fresh, colorful produce.
Overall, I was thrilled with the variety and the presentation, backed up with uncomplicated, straight forward, YUMMY sounding recipes. 😋
