This book read like a song to me. I think that works well since it is about a singer. The pictures are beautiful and match up well with the story. A bit wordy at times, so younger kids may have trouble sitting through this one.
While I enjoy most books that feature a poc narrator and non traditional family structure this one was just ok. Rhyming was forced at times.
What a sweet book with a nice message! The young girl's grandfather gets her through a difficult moment with the calming power of music. There is also a cute little twist when they realize that objects are missing and figure out the culprit! I loved the message and enjoyed and illustrations!

Set on a small farm in Tennessee, Lorraine recounts the story of a little girl and her Pa Paw. This dynamic duo share a bond not just limited to blood but also to their musical talents. However, one day just as a horrible storm starts to roll through, Lorraine discovers that her pennywhistle has mysteriously gone missing alone with her grandfather’s harmonica. Distraught and worried by the upcoming storm, Lorraine must learn how to overcome her fears with the help of her grandfather. Together, the channel within for their inner musical talents and are able to use the power of music to overcome their storm. The illustrations were so vivid and well drawn out, that one can just look at them and still have the storied conveyed so eloquently. Real life singer Ketch Secor and illustrator Higgins Bond channeled their talents into crafting one amazing story of triumph even in the face of darkness; all one has to do is channel the inner voice of their soul.
Lovely little children's book with beautiful illustrations. This contained a nice little moral of not to give up hope. Would happily recommend this author's work to everyone curious about trying it out.
This was a wonderfully illustrated book full of color and catchy rhymes. It was wordy, but younger children will maintain interest through the pictures alone. For beginning readers it has a good balance of easy and challenging. The diversity is definitely a plus. Recommended for libraries, classrooms, and private collections.
Higgins Bond's illustrations are the highlight of this rhyming story about a little girl and her grandfather. Small shiny things keep disappearing from their farm. After making it through a storm by singing to keep their courage up, Lorraine and Paw Paw get the answer to the mystery.
Wonderful children’s book with delightful illustrations. Would recommend this book for children of all ages, very enjoyable.
Open up this book and get yer feet a'tappin'!
Lorraine, by Ketch Secor, is a charming book written in a catchy rhythm that seems to make the words jump right off the page and put a song in your heart. Served with Higgins Bond's glorious illustrations, Lorraine is a book perfect for all libraries' and home bookshelves.
The text is whimsically placed on the page in such a manner that it makes for an exceptionally enjoyable readaloud. The story tells of a grandfather & grandaughter who enjoy their music together, using it to even propel them through daily chores. Unfortunately, there's a thief in their midst. Pa Paw's words of wisdom steel Lorraine and the storm becomes mere background noise. More unfolds after the storm but that's to be left for those reading this sweet book!
Lorraine makes for a great gift-giving or as a readaloud during weather or music study in a classroom, library event, or homeschool. If you're familiar with Storm in the Night by Mary Stolz, pub. date 1988; or Higgins Bend Song and Dance by Jacqueline Briggs Martinn pub. date 1997; you'll definitely want this book. Ketch Secor has brought the feel of those two books and other great children's picture books into this originsl story that's sure-to-be-a-classic. Kudos Secor and Bond!
This was a cute story about Lorraine and her grandfather making music to make friends and overcome their fears. The rhyme scheme was fun and I thought the illustrations were nice. This would be a cute read aloud.
A cute, lyrical story written in rhyming verse. The illustrations are lovely and really add some extra elements to the story that aren't explicitly written in the text (for example, the mischievous crow). Overall, the story is cheery and inspires a love of music.
I liked this story even though it seems a little miss matched. Yes Loraine is there, and yes she sang during a story, but just as much of the story was given to singing to a raven that was a mysterious friend. It has a rhyming sing song quality which I love in a picture book, and overall it really works. I just would maybe play with the subtitle a little. May it represent the entire book instead of just a short part of the story.
A book written in singsong poetry style. Ketch Secor is a musician who loves music and considers it am important part of life. Lorraine and her Pa Paw play music together, he on his harmonica, she on her penny whistle. When a storm is coming, Lorraine is worried. They want to play music to help them get through the situation, but their instruments are gone. Lorraine does not know what to do until Pa Paw tells her that she can always sing with her beautiful voice. When the storm is over, they find their instruments and many other metal objects in a tree that has fallen over, all hidden by the neighbourhood crow. A very easy book to read and I tried to sing this story to the kids when I was reading it to them. They also tried to sing with me. A great story for a music class about the importance of music to the world. The illustrations were large, realistic and added a lot to the story. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book via Netgalley.
Lorraine is a cute picture book filled with love, music, mystery and a scary storm. The story was a bit disjointed and patchwork, but overall positive. Some of the illustrations were quite lovely, and others seemed like characters against a green screen. I did like the ending, although it was a little predictable.

Thanks NetGalley for allowing me to preview this title. This book centers around Lorraine and her Pa Paw who live on a Tennessee farm. They spend the day singing and playing music to get them through the day. Along the way, they make unexpected friends.
This was a very cute book. The illustrations are amazing! I found myself trying to sing along with the characters. This would be a great addition to any library shelf.
