Thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book to provide feedback. I found the book to be a bit confusing. I do like the multiple points of views based off the three main characters, but the jumping back and forth of days between the girls was hard to follow. I do think the author appropriately captured the dynamics of three best friends, where one constantly feels left out. I think the book teases a big finale, but yet once things are revealed it is not as exciting as it led up to be. I was disappointed with the reveal and was hoping for more. The beginning of the book intrigued me but then it became a bit slow. The rehashing of funeral details between Ashley and Lauren became very repetitive. Overall, I think the book has a good concept, just wished for a better ending.
Great summer read and one of my favorite books so far this year! Three friends go to Mexico for a girls trip and one disappears. The story is told from all three perspectives and keeps you on the hook until the very last sentence!
This is my first read by Liz Fenton & Lisa Steinke and I certainly was not disappointed. Ashley & Natalie work together after building up a successful business and have received an enormous offer to buy them out from Revlon which Natalie wants/needs to accept but Ashley does not. Neither have spoken to Lauren in a year since the death of her husband Geoff after a fight broke out between Lauren & Ashley at the funeral. Ashley invites Natalie & Lauren to Tallum, Mexico in a bid to save/reconnect their friendship of 20 years.
On their last “Girls Night Out” things go a bit askew with Natalie waking up the next morning on a sun lounger on the beach fully clothed but wet and no memory as to how she could have gotten there only to discover when she gets back to the hotel, Ashley never made it home. Natalie and Lauren have to try and retrace their steps from the previous night but the hazy memories or no memory in Natalie’s case is hindering progress. I thought it was going to be a bit like “The Hangover”. I was hooked, what did happen to Ashley, where is she? Had Marco (the local stranger who befriend the girls and acted as their guide) have something to do with Ashley’s disappearance? So many questions, secrets and lies, will their friendship withstand these? Each question making you devour the book to get to the bottom of what happened!
A story full of suspense told in three narratives from each girls’ point of view both in present day and the lead up to the night in question until the truth is out!!!! Really enjoyed this book and didn’t see the twist coming at the end, when the truth came out I thought OOOOH… but nope another twist to totally turn it on its head.
Thank you to Netgalley and Lake Union Publishing for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest opinion.
Such a riveting book! Couldn't put it down and will definitely be reccomending it to customers at my work!
This is the second book I've read by these authors and I did enjoy it. It was faced paced and had a plausible premise of three women taking a holiday to reconnect. That being said, I did not hold much sympathy for the main character of Ashley. I didn't feel that she was likable at all and had a hard time understanding how and why Natalie and Lauren cared enough to take a vacation with her. I did appreciate the suspense and mystery factor in the book - that kept me turning the pages. The twist at the end was also interesting and unexpected.
Wow! What a story! It will grab you from the start and make you want to stay up all night to see how it ends. I enjoyed the story but I didn’t really like the characters. They all cared more about themselves than each other. I can actually see this happening in real life too. I do love these two authors and their books!
Girls’ Night takes us through the stories of three friends on their getaway to Mexico, a trip that give them time to mend their friendships. Until one goes missing…
Natalie, Ashley and Lauren were friends for a long time, but they had grown apart. This was supposed to be the trip of all trips, mending feelings and their friendship was first on tap for the trip. Next to have some care free fun in the beautiful city of Tulum. Natalie and Ashley work together each and everyday, and there is a sale of the product that they created Nat and Ash coming up, one is all for it while the other is adamant not to sell, causing issues between them. While Lauren kinda had her life to deal with. Needless to say, there was a lot going on.
The sory is told from the point of view from all three women. All the events and drama leading up the disappearance of Ash, leaves Nat and Lauren trying to piece together the clues they come across as to where Ash could possibly be. Maybe that handsome man she met has done something to her, or maybe she just ran of with them. Who knows! The pieces do start to fall in place and it pretty entertaining trying to figure out how they fit together.
These three women weren’t always portrayed in the best light. The each had their own issues to deal with other than just their friendships. When is came to their friends, the ole’ saying “Two’s a company, three’s a crowd” certainly rings true here.
While I had a little bit of a hard time connecting with the women, the drama that ensued was pretty good. And I had to know what exactly might have happened with all of them and how it would all turn out, that I just kept reading and pieces all the clues together with Nat and Lauren.
Over all, the ending was a little anti-climatic because I had figure it all out, but it was still a really good psychological thriller and kept me turning the pages.
Sad, beautiful story about friendship. Well written story about three women who go on a tropical vacation with the hopes of reconnecting after life has gotten in the way of their relationship with each other. Painfully honest and genuine. Anyone who has ever had a falling out with a best friend or family member can relate to this story. Highly recommended.
First all thank you Net Galley for a chance to read this before it hits shelves next month. OMG this book had me going the whole time. I liked how the story was told, with the nights leading up and the days after what happened. I also like that it was told from all three friends POV's. I had my suspicions about what was going on, I mean everyone had a reason for what happened, and the ending really got me. I mean I thought I had it figured out until I read the last entry for Ashley, and then my mind was blown. I didn't really care for any of the husbands or the death friend as Lauren liked to call Annie. I mean I know why they had to be in the story I just wanted to slap them lol. I can see where Natalie and Lauren were both coming from. I felt like Ashley was being selfish also. This was the first book by Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke , but it won't be my last for sure. .
This is the story of friendship. It discusses what happens overtime to long term friends; petty arguments, jealousies, and resentment. Will these friends ever repair the damage that exists between each of them? Can a trip to Mexico save them? I enjoyed the overall message of this book, but the delivery was long winded. Towards the ending I just stopped caring about these girls and didn’t care if they reached a resolution. I wanted to love this book, but I just couldn’t. There were some parts I liked but not enough to keep me interested. Thank you NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for the advanced copy. All opinions are my own.
The ending of the book was good and gave me the closure that I was seeking throughout the story. Getting there was difficult though. The story dragged on and I questioned several times whether I could finish it. Unfortunately, I couldn't feel a connection with any of the characters. Early on, I had to go back and reread parts to differentiate everyone. The first chapter was very promising but then it all fell flat for me.
The plot was a bit shaky at times but the writing and overall story more than made up for it. I know an Ashley so the book hit home many, many times. The charisma Ashley had in the book clearly propelled the events forward. That made for an interesting read and a very fresh storyline. Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the ARC. Well worth the read.
GNO! Had me at the title, so relatable as you hit 40- life and friendships, how they tend to shift. A mystery told in a different context, but keep me wanting to know what happened? You hear stories like this... the book did not disappoint!
3.5 stars, rounded up to 4.
This was my first book by Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke but it won't be my last.
Girls' Night Out boils down to being a deep character study on a twenty-year friendship shared between three women - Ashley, Natalie & Lauren. For various reasons the three have had increasing strains on their relationships and Ashley (who is the sun that the other two orbit around and chase for attention) suggests a girls' trip to Mexico to reconnect. Once there, things don't go as planned as arguments become more brazen fueled by alcohol, a new man, and an exotic location.
The story opens with Natalie waking up alone on the beach with no memory of the night before. When she makes it back to her room, she discovers that Ashley is missing. The story is told through alternating POV's from the three friends as well as in different time periods - the present, and the past, leading up to Ashley's disappearance. I liked this format because it kept me on the edge of my seat as the past chapters ticked ever closer to catching up to the present. I also appreciated that we got perspectives from each character as it enhanced the readers' knowledge of their own internal battles and context on their unique friendships.
This book certainly doesn't have a bombshell ending per say, but I appreciated the quiet and methodical way that we got there. It's a solid thriller that examines friendships and is perhaps so chilling because it doesn't feel so far removed from something that could happen to anyone with close friends who let life get in the way of their bonds.
I received this ARC as a courtesy from NetGalley & the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
This book, wow, this book! I conveniently read this while in Cancun, Mexico, and found myself sitting by the ocean late until the day completely engrossed, reading about this nightmare. A nightmare I hope to never experience. My mother has always told me three's a crowd! Fast paced, a page turner, you will be hooked! This is, without a doubt, one of the best books that I have read this year. It kept me guessing until the very end!
A huge thank you to Net Galley and Lake Union Publishing for an opportunity to receive this book!
This is a solid, fast paced book that questions what you really know about your close friends. In this twisty story we follow three point of views that travel in time to slowly reveal the past, present and possibly future of these three best friends. Ashley, Lauren and Natalie have shared most of their adults lives together but when an incident in the past and a present struggle throws their balance off, Ashley seeks to put them back together with a trip to Mexico. When Ashley goes missing after a Girl's Night Out they begin to question if her intentions were really pure and who is Marco, the local who has befriended Ashley?I thought one of the strong elements in this story was the aspect of out growing friendships. Can you remain friends with everyone for 20+ and even if you do should you? I thought the complex nature of women friendships was a strong part of the story that really added depth, emotion and drama. There are always those people in your lives who you can't see befriending as an adult but remain friends because it's second nature. I would recommend this book and really enjoyed reading it. It kept me guessing up until the final chapter.
3.5 stars rounded up. Thank you to Netgalley & Lake Union Publishing for the ARC. I was very much looking forward to this book because I enjoyed The Good Widow - and it was written by friends! There is something empowering about that alone, that two women who have been friends for a lifetime can co-write successfully without ripping each other's hair out (maybe??), but it also explains why the dialogue between the two business partner friends in the story was so plausible and real, as the authors have probably experienced disagreements together in regards to the direction of their brand (holy run-on sentence!!). But anyway! This book wasn't anything earth shattering; the pace was perfect, not too fast, not too slow, and it gently guided you down different avenues of theory. I don't know if everyone else is like me and is constantly guessing which way the book is headed, trying to find out whodunit before the end of the book so I can shout, I KNEW IT, I KNEW IT ALL ALONG, even if to myself...in an empty room... But this one definitely proved me wrong, even to the last page. The one thing I took from this book, though, was Tulum. The beautiful written imagery prompted me to google all of the landmarks mentioned and it is now my future vacation destination with my sister and brother in law. I seriously hope the authors were able to explore Tulum and write it off on their taxes as a business expense! Overall, would definitely recommend if you don't want anything TOO deep to read, but still would like a reliable, enjoyable thriller.
Intoxicating as a shot of teliqua. This book entangles a trip to Mexico, a group of girls that have been friends for years, outside stresses back at home, and loads of alcohol. I was very pleased with the development of characters and their backstories, aside from the level of suspense and wanting to know what happened Ashley. Happy Summer, bring the chips, dip, and teligua to this Mexico trip. Thank you Lake Union Company and Netgalley for the e-copy ARC. to review.
So much of this book resonated with me. It's really interested to step outside of yourself and think about how we as women handle our friendships. Throw in a mystery and I am hooked!
Three friends head to Mexico for a girls trip...and to repair what's broken between them. But when one goes missing, what's the real motive? Oh so twisty and unexpected! I was on the edge of my seat right to the very last page.
The story is told from all three perspectives and I liked that you really got a great feel for each character and her own struggles. These are real life issues and real life consequences and so much of that is relatable to the reader. The setting of Tulum, Mexico really became another character for me...maybe because I have visited a number of times. The storytelling is so vivid and descriptive I could imagine myself right there with these women...at a secret beach, a jungle cenote, on top of Chichen Itza, etc.
Overall I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it highly! I was provided with an ARC via NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.
As a lover of suspense books, you tend to see the same plot over and over. This book was quite different from all the others. While I didn’t care much for the characters, I had to keep reading to find out what happened. Told in multiple points of view and across time, the race is on to find out what happened to one of the friends on a girls’ trip to Mexico. As the saying goes, “two’s company, but three’s a crowd....”
