I enjoyed girls night out but similar to other reviews, I could not relate or find anything great about any of the three main characters. I found myself frustrated with them more than wanting to find out the ending.
First I want to thank netgalley and the authors for an advanced copy of the kindle version of this book! The book begins as three friends plan a trip to Mexico to help fix problems with their friendship. Each friend Ashley , Natalie and Lauren has a life situation there dealing with Ashley and Natalie own a company , Natalie wants to sell and Ashley doesn’t so that causes tension while Lauren is still not over the death of her husband which she partially blames Ashley for . Ashley meets a man at yoga in Mexico and she wants to spend all her time with which irritates her friends she’s married . Marco is the mans name. After a night of partying Natalie wakes up on the beach outside the resort . She can’t remember what happened the night before. Ashley is missing so is Marco . As we try to piece together what happened which is the story line. I found myself not really connecting with the characters and the story is all over the place I was disappointed! I loved the good widow so much. I almost fell asleep while reading this book. I love a good mystery and thriller and this wasn’t it for me! They rushed the ending and I felt like it was just thrown together .
Another great suspense written by the dynamic duo! Three best friends take a trip to try to reconnect, but nothing goes as planned. A story that is told going back and forth during and after a friend disappearing, without confusion. This is a great page turning Summer read!
This book took me forever to finish. Everyone is so all over the place, in the past they all argue and bicker but then in the present they praise their friend and how great she is. They honestly felt like young adults instead of 40 year olds and I think they all should’ve ended their friendship a long time ago.
Girls Night Out is about 3 so called friends (Ashley, Natalie and Lauren) going on vacation to Tulum Mexico. Ashley planned the trip so the 3 of them can connect after an incident last year caused some tension between Ashley and Lauren.
Ashley goes missing on their last night out (Girls Night Out) and Lauren and Natalie are worried and try their best to piece together what happened that night.
Girls Night Out is very relatable to women of all ages. We all have friends that we have had a falling out with and try to reconnect with those friends but sometimes you have to ask yourself is it really worth it.
Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke are great storytellers. They captured the realness of friendships (good and bad) and told a pretty realistic story that most of us can relate to. The details they wrote about Tulum and surrounding areas made me picture if beautifully.
Overall I really liked the book and give it 4 stars!!! Can't wait for your next one!!
Three women head to Mexico to repair their 20yo friendship. Along the way readers find out all the secrets, meet mysterious stranger and try to find out what happened to Ashley. Well written but a bit whiplash-y with the back and forth between past and present. And the women weren't very likeable.
Girls’ Night Out is the story of three women who’ve been friends for decades, but with their relationships complicated and showing serious signs of strain. So off they go for a restful retreat to Tullum, Mexico, hoping that the energy of the ancient Mayan people will heal their wounds and knit them back together.
It starts out that way. But soon it turns very dark, as the women, fueled by massive quantities of alcohol and seduced by a mysterious stranger, venture into territory that none of them ever expected.
My thanks to the author, Lake Union Publishing, and NetGalley for providing me an advance review copy of this book.
Hold on to your tequila! This is an excellent book! "
"It just is what it is, no matter how much you want it to be something else."
A suspenseful mystery about three women who have been friends for twenty-five years and yet, now their friendship as well as their lives are in disarray.
A trip to Tulum, Mexico for a few days to regroup is just what these ladies need. Or Is It?
You will be turning the pages to find out how and why one of these friends just leaves or disappears?
This novel had me from the first page to the very last. Loved the ending!
Ashley, Natalie and Lauren have been friends for a long time, but the past few years has put a strain on their friendship. Lauren and Ashley had a falling out after Lauren's husband died, with Lauren blaming Ashley for his death. The company that Natalie and Ashley co-own has had an offer from Revlon to be purchased for a large sum of money. Natalie wants to sell but Ashley keeps refusing. The girls go to Mexico for a vacation, to see if it is possible to mend their friendships. While they are there Ashley goes missing and everyone becomes a suspect.
This book is told in the perspective of each of the ladies, and alternates between the days leading up to the disappearance and afterwards. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and it kept me guessing until the very end. This is perfect for everyone who loves a good mystery.
Girls’ Night Out is a clever book about friendship with an extra dose of intrigue. Three women journey to Tulum, Mexico to reunite and repair their friendship. But once together, each woman holds back, and during what was supposed to be a fun night out, one of the women disappears. In the aftermath, the remaining two women try to figure out what happens.
The story moves from the point of view of each of the women while also moving back and forth through time. In a less skilled writer’s hands, this could result in a very confusing plot, but I liked how secrets were revealed slowly versus waiting until the end of the novel find out everything.
For fans of Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke, I highly recommend this book. I'd like to thank NetGalley for providing me an advanced copy.
Ashley, Natalie and Lauren have been friends for years, but their relationship has been strained lately and seems on the point of breaking. Desperate to save their friendship, Ashley invites the other two on a trip to Mexico, hoping the vacation will help them solve their problems. However, things only get worse once in Mexico, and on their last morning there Natalie and Lauren wake up to find Ashley has disappeared. What happened to her?
Girls' Night Out was the perfect beach read: easy and fast to read, overall entertaining even if not particularly memorable.
The main focus of the book, apart from Ashley's disappearance, was the darker side of long-term friendships. I enjoy reading about this theme, but despite the fact the authors spent a lot of time on it, I didn't connect with the characters much. They were quite unlikeable and seemed much younger than their actual age, and their misunderstandings frustrated me a lot. Overall I didn't find them very compelling.
The chapters alternated between the three women's point of views and between past and present, and this worked well for me. It wasn't confusing, and it kept my interest in the story even if it wasn't extremely fast paced. The ending, however, was a little lame. I wasn't happy with it, and I didn't find it convincing.
Girls Night Out is a twisted thriller. Three friends try to revive their old friendship with a girl’s trip to Mexico. Each girl has their own secrets that are very realistic in many marriages. Ashley disappears during the trip. Natalie and Lauren try to put the pieces of the trip together and find Ashley. Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke write another book filled from cover to cover with suspense.
What an amazing story! Based on the authors’ last book, I went in expecting another good thriller. While “Girls Night Out” certainly met that expectation, I was more intrigued by their thought-provoking analysis of long-term friendships. Anyone who has friends they’ve known for awhile will instantly be able to relate to the three main characters in this story. The authors have done a great job in layering the perspectives of Natalie, Lauren, and Ashley from both before and after “the night.” It was especially interesting that each woman had her own secrets that were revealed as the main “mystery” was unraveled. I thought the authors did a phenomenal job of illustrating the difficulties middle-aged women have when they come to a crossroads in life, and how even confiding in long-term friends can be a challenge. A definite must-read!
3.5 Stars on this one....
What I liked: The overall premise and story were solid. The writing was very good. I did like the flipping between past and present, as well as point of views from the 3 main characters.
What I didn’t like: The ending and the “twist,” if that’s what it was. Also the women were whiny and at times annoying, although I’m sure truthful - there are probably women just like them out there.
I don’t even know where to begin with this amazing book!! I literally could not put it down! I read it in one sitting! So wonderfully written!
Thank you NetGalley & the publisher for the opportunity to read and give a review on Girls Night Out. I won’t give any spoilers. I really enjoyed reading this book. I didn’t want the story to end as I could not get enough of these characters and the plot of the story just kept getting better & better as I got further along in the book. I highly recommended this book for you to read. This is my very first book from Liz Fenton & Lisa Steinke and I’m looking forward to reading more from them.
Natalie, Ashley, and Lauren have been best friends since college but they drifted apart and have not spoken in a few years. In hope of repairing their broken friendship, Ashley invites the girls on a spur of the moment trip to Mexico.
Ashley is hopeful that the trip to Mexico will magically bring the girls back together...but little did the girls know that their lives will be turned upside down. After a tragic fight one night between the girls, Ashley disappears. Has she been hurt? Where could she have possibly gone??
The story is told from multiple POV's between Ashley, Natalie, and Lauren plus different timelines. Now, I usually always enjoy multiple POV but in this case... it didn't work at all for me. The timeline would alternate between 2 days before/3 days before Ashley's disappearance etc. This was hugely distracting for me and didn't work at all.
I was confused and couldn't keep up with the different alternating time frames of back and forth.
And... I had a hard time connecting with the women. I honestly felt like all three character were selfish and spoiled. AND honestly, I felt like I was hit in the head with a frisbee multiple times constantly hearing about the fighting between the girls. Especially Natalie and Ashley receiving an offer from Revlon who wants to buy the company they share together. They're constantly fighting about one wanting to sell and the other wanting to keep the company. Ugh... this was majorly annoying and not that interesting either.
It was pretty slow to pick up and didn't get invested until about 50 percent in. Mmm... I honestly wasn't really that impressed with this book.
I've heard great things about this author and I wanted to love it but I of course am the outlier on this one again.
Overall, 2.5 stars for me on this one.
Thank you so much to Netgalley and Lake Union Publishing for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest review.

Immediately after starting this book I was intrigued by the plot and characters. I couldn't stop thinking about what was going to happen and was drawn to keep reading. Unfortunately I didn't care for the characters. I struggled to find likeable qualities and to root for them to solve their problems. This did not deter me from loving the plot and writing style. Flipping back and forth between time periods and characters really kept my interest. Overall this was a great book that I was easy and enjoyable to read.
While I loved The Good Widow, I did not enjoy this book quite as much. It was a little more slow moving and the characters not not terribly
Iikeable.. Maybe it was just me, but I thought it was just OK. I am sure there are many who will think it is a terrific summer, beach read.
Having not read Liz Fenton & Lisa Steinke's previous novels, I had no idea what to expect at all. What was promised at the start of the synopsis on the NetGalley listing was "a chilling novel of psychological suspense that will make you think twice about what your best friend may be hiding…". I'm afraid if you're hoping for a thriller you're in the wrong place, this is definitely more suited to the chick lit/women's fiction genre.
The concept is one that has been reused countless times, but can still make for a good read provided it is written and executed well. The writing was fine but I feel I am only able to rate it on what I expected - a thriller. I feel this would be perfectly suited to those who enjoy the chick lit/women's fiction genre. As I don't appreciate books from that genre it wasn't for me i'm afraid.
Many thanks to Lake Union Publishing for an ARC. I was not required to post a review and all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.
