Ashley, Natalie, and Lauren have gone away together to a resort in Tulum, Mexico in hopes of rekindling their previous friendships at Ashley's request. They had been best of friends since college, but in the last few years several incidents have damaged their relationships. The story is told by going back and forth since their arrival in Tulum as well as with a few flashbacks describing their troubles. It might sound confusing, but I had not problem following this story.
It opens the day before the trio will be returning to the U.S. Natalie wakes up wet on a chair on the beach. She does not remember what happened the night before and she can't find Ashley. The last thing she remembers is that she and Ashley were together. When she heads to her room, she finds all Ashley's things, but not her. Lauren has not seen her either. Where is she? Has something happened to her? Did she run off with Marco, the man they met on the beach?
I liked the theme of friendship in this book. The ladies all had problems, but Ashley wanted to bring them all back together, unfortunately, wanting it and succeeding at doing it are two very different things. The problems the women were experiencing were realistic; Death of a spouse, abuse, financial problems and of course, keeping secrets only exacerbated the situation. Having said that, I did not like these women. They were all very self-centered and selfish. They were whiny and hard to connect with. Overall, this was an interesting read with some twists, and an intriguing and well-paced plot. The ending was unexpected and shocking, a real wow moment. This was my first read from Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke, and I will watch for more books from this pair.
Friends vacation in Mexico. There are secrets and intrigue, and gasp, one disappears.
I like how the twists and secrets just came out of nowhere. I liked wondering where the missing woman was and what happened, would she return or not?
Waking up after a night of drinking and no memory is never a good thing but it makes for good story.
I read and wondered, and kept reading and then the big reveal, was.....sigh a bit of a letdown for me.
So all said and done, 3 days of reading and knowing I will pick up another book by the authors with the hope it will be a bit better.
Thanks to Netgalley for an ebook in exchange for an honest review.
Girls' Night Out was one of my favorite books of the year! The plot was so unique and I couldn't put this book down because I really wanted to know how it was going to end! I could see this book being made into a movie.
The perfect escape from the cold Michigan days while mentally traveling to Mexico for a girls night. I live reading about tropical getaways especially when I am stuck in the cold.
What seems more rational than traveling far away and hashing out all your issues with friends? Anyway this was a nail biter. We had all these issues come to light just as a handsome local is introduced to the fold. I found myself dying to figure it out!
I really enjoyed this book! Although it started off a little slow for me, it absolutely picked up for me. This book could have ended in a certain way but I was completely surprised by the actual ending. So happy I read this!
I love a good psychological thriller and the blur and cover for this one really drew me in and I was hooked by the storyline after reading just a few chapters.
I loved the plot and the storyline had just the right amount of intrigue and suspense for me, it certainly kept my attention and I was desperate to find out the ending too! The characters are well developed and their interaction are certainly on point and really help the story progress.
I liked how we got to read the story from the different view points of the three main characters and I think that gave the story an added depth for me. The concept is slightly similar to other books in this genre but I thoroughly enjoyed this one and thought it was developed very well and it stood out for me in what is becoming a very competitive genre.
It is four stars from me for this one – it is a very enjoyable story and highly recommended!!
I had a hard time connecting to the characters in this book. I was drawn in at first but found the changing of POV to make it even harder to connect with them. The book isn't written poorly, I just wasn't able to connect but feel that a lot of others will enjoy it.
Thanks for the opportunity to read this in advance.
I don't think I can rave about this psychological thriller enough! Not only was it un-put-down-able but brilliant writing, unique and intriguing story of a group of girlfriends take a trip to Mexico and one goes missing. I don't know how this dynamic duo of magical writing unicorns does it! Liz and Lisa are my thriller writing heroines and if you want a book where you don't want anyone to bother you for one second because it is so damn good, this is the book. I absolutely did not figure it out and when a story and the writing does this then I'm so in and invested! This is a perfect book to share with girlfriends a book club or hole up in your favorite reading spot and have it all to yourself. This is something magically special. The brilliance in the story, the characters, the emotions, the setting. It's all here. Get . this. book. 5 stars that blast about like beautiful fireworks. Loved it. (less)
Thank you Netgalley for my Advanced readers copy of Girls Night Out. This book will keep you on the edge of your seat trying to figure out his mystery!! Excellent book!
This novel was a slow burn for me. I had a hard time relating to the characters at first, and I felt like while I knew it was going to be an interesting plot line, I felt like the backstory took too much away from the climax. I also was left wanting to know more at the end. There were some definite entertaining parts in this book, and it was worth the read!
Three friends go on a girls trip to Mexico to try to repair their damaged friendships. The trip isn't going well and by the their last day one of them is missing. I really enjoyed the suspense of the story and found myself going through all kinds of scenarios to figure it out, I was absolutely wrong on all my theories. I love when a suspense book can throw me, that being said I didn't particularly like any of the characters, though their emotions seemed real enough I thought they were a little petty and I didn't really care for the ending, I thought it would be a little more dramatic perhaps so I although I enjoyed reading the book I felt a little disappointed at the ending.
GNO was so much more than a thriller, it was a story of friendship and the way it changes through the years. I found myself relating to this story, being in my 30's and the ever-evolving friendships in my life.
I was super excited to be granted an ARC of this book as I loved the author's other book, The Good Widow." In addition, the title of this book is what originally got my attention. Unfortunately, the the beginning fell flat for me and I wasn't able to regain the momentum of my excitement. I found the main characters to be somewhat unsavory and their friendship to be unbelievable. I couldn't make myself care about their plight because I didn't connect with them at all. However, overall the story was intriguing and I closed the book with the feeling of, "Meh, that was okay."
My thanks to NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book was about 3 girlfriends who were best friends in college and their relationship had changed over the years and their adventure trip to Mexico to refresh and renew their friendship.
The story was told from the point of view of each friend. I enjoyed the back and forth of the different viewpoints.
All in all, a good suspenseful book!
This book is marketed as a thriller, but I’d consider it more mystery than thriller. The ending was pretty easy to figure out though, so not a great mystery. While I didn’t particularly like any of the women, I do think the authors captured the toxicity of some female friendships, especially those hard to maintain friendships in groups of 3.
A trip to Tulum sounds fun and exciting right?
But how about dangers and things we give for granted!?
Had me on the edge at all times.. great y thriller.
This was my first book from both author . Thank you so much.. I'll be looking forward to read the rest.
It took me forever to go through this book because I couldn't get into it.
The multiple POV and timeline got overwhelming, i had a hard time connecting to the characters and the constant fighting irritated me.
Overall it wasn't for me at all.
Girls' Night Out is an intriguing tale of three friends who take a trip to Mexico to try and mend the friendship. However, each one of the friends own lives are falling apart before their very eyes. It's also never easy when their is an odd number of friends because someone always gets left out. As these women try to mend their friendships, they open the door up to more problems while in Mexico which makes this mystery, psychological thriller even more intriguing. I would rate this book at probably a 3.5 to 4 stars. It was intriguing and I definitely could not put it down till I finished the book. I certainly want to read more books from Liz Fenton.
Girls Night Out is a story of lost friendships and found friendships. Many twists, secrets revealed, and trusts broken among three girls who were once best friends. What happens when three friends go to an island to make amends and rekindle their friendships is anyone's guess. I did not see the end coming! Great read.
Wow! Girls' Night Out is a book that really appealed to me because I have two best friends and I understand the dynamics of a friendship that includes three strong, independent and opinionated women. This book was so so good; I enjoyed the authors' last book, The Good Widow but I think this one was even better. From the very first sentence this book sucked me in and I could not read it fast enough. It kept me guessing until the very end! I especially enjoyed the authors' note at the end. Well done!
