I had to keep an eye on the date changes and books like this take a bit of getting used to as well being able to give it your attention and time. I enjoyed the book and as it was my first read from this author I look forward to reading more.
Overall this was a good mystery and the plot kept my pages turning. I did get hung up on the fact that a witness could have identified the killer, yet nothing was done about that. I also found the dates/sequencing a bit confusing. I found myself turning back and forth to try to make sense of it, on several occasions. I also would not classify this as romance as the "romance" was mild at best. I enjoy this author's books and look forward to reading her next.
This was so fun and interesting!! I just really enjoyed this and I didn’t expect anything that happened! It really kept me guessing and I could not tell you who the killer was! I guessed so many different things and none of them were correct so I’m glad this book really kept me guessing and wondering what happened! I also love the romance!! I dug that so much and I liked that while it was present it didn’t take over the story! Highly recommend this!!
Thank you to Netgalley, the Publisher and the author for the opportunity to read this book in return for my honest opinion.
Another great read by Mary Burton, I do not think I have read any of her books that I did not enjoy. I liked the plot and the characters were great. I suspected some of the plot line but still enjoyed reading it and watching the story play out. It makes a great summer read. will definitely read more of her books, I think I have read most of them.
Twists and turn abound...while you may figure some things out early in the story there are more twists and turns to come. One of my favorite from Mary Burton so far. There were times I wondered where the story was going then it would come back around...some of it might drag out but it's all relevant and comes back with a vengeance.
Exciting read! This story grabbed my attention from the start. The layout was a little unorthodox and a tad confusing in that sometimes you didn't know who's account of the story was being shared, but overall it was a great read. Lots of danger and excitement, a mystery to try to solve along the way that ends up turning into more than one. Really enjoyed it!
Kaitlin Roe was only sixteen when she witnessed her cousin being kidnapped from the dark country road they were walking on. She's been tormented for years with that memory, and for awhile she only cared about looking for a way to forget. It's now fourteen years later and she's changed her life. She's finally strong enough to go back and stir all of those old memories up again in the hope of finally finding out what happened to Gina. Working on a podcast to put the story in the forefront again, she reaches out to everyone who had anything to do with Gina or the case all those years ago. Someone doesn't seem to welcome the intrusion!
When homicide detective John Adler responds to a murder and realizes Kaitlin has a connection to the victim, he recognizes the case and sets out to find answers. He never expects to discover that she might have opened up a door that has a murderer coming knocking. He's not sure he can trust her, but he's determined to keep her safe as they race the clock to find out if this is the same guy that took Gina, and what happened to her!
Another killer read by someone that just knows how..... Well written, fast paced and unputdownable (is there even a word like that..?) brilliant - recommended.
Author Mary Burton departs from a traditional storytelling approach in Her Last Word. While it might seem unusual to some readers, I found it highly engaging. Each chapter alternates between snippets of a podcast created by the main character and actual events that are happening. This works very well in keeping the suspense mounting as the story unfolds.
The central theme of the book focuses around Kaitlin Roe’s search for her missing cousin. As she reconstructs the events leading up to the 14-year-old abduction, the story shifts to a current day murderer who seems determined to silence the past. The love element comes into play in the form of Detective John Adler.
I found myself trying to put the clues together, but the author only revealed snippets at a time. It’s not until the explosive ending that all the pieces fall into place. I felt that all of the characters, even those who were eventually killed off, meshed well together with plenty of development. The added details of Kaitlin’s rather troubled past illustrated why people weren’t taking her seriously in her search for justice.
I enjoyed this introduction to Mary Burton’s work and look forward to seeing if she has more in this genre. It takes skill to pull off a solid serial killer story — and Her Last Word meets that requirement.
Voluntary review of an ARC. Another great book from Mary Burton. I have always loved Mary's books and this is no exception. Her characters are always so real. Kaitlin and Adler are adversaries at first but can't ignore their mutual attraction. The plot involves two intertwined murders, one taking place in the present and the other 14 years previously. Many twists and turns along the way. I highly recommend this series as I would all Mary's work.
I was given an advanced copy of this title in exchange for an honest review. This book was so very well written. It captivated me the entire time!
Kaitlin Rowe is still haunted by her cousin's kidnapping, especially since she was with Gina when she was taken. Yet, instead of doing something to help, she ran away for fear she'd end up taken too. However, now fourteen years later, she's finally ready to do something to find answers to what happened and prove that she shouldn't have been interrogated as a suspect when the crime was first committed. Yet, when a murder occurs that could be linked to her cousin's kidnapping, the detective assigned to the case is determined to keep Kaitlin safe. Will Detective John Adler be able to find the killer before Kaitlin becomes his next victim or will the pair lose their chance at happy ever after because someone is determined to silence Kaitlin permanently?
This was such an interesting and engaging read in the way it bounces back and forth between the past, as Kaitlin is haunted by the past and what happened to her cousin while in the present she's determined to find the truth once and for all and hopefully discover what is going on with the new murder. However, it was the gripping and pulse-pounding suspense that made this story a captivating read, as someone is determined to silence those that should have been able to help Kaitlin's cousin years ago.
With the dialogue, it was intense due to the main characters back stories, especially that of the heroine, as she went through a rough time when her cousin was kidnapped. Becoming a suspect wasn't easy, but I liked that she hasn't given up hope of ever finding out what happened. Will the heroine get the answers she wants? Moreover, the heroine is strong and brave in doing what she's doing because she can no longer handle the guilt or the nightmares that plague her. I also liked how she challenged the hero because she's determined to do the podcast and she's not going to let anything stand in her way. While the hero, he's good at his job, determined to get to the truth of what's happening now and what happened to the heroine's cousin in the past, and I liked how determined he was to protect Kaitlin because he knows she won't give up until she has answers.
Overall, Ms. Burton has delivered a really good read in this book where the chemistry between this couple was there from the moment they met and just keeps getting stronger the more time they spend together; the plot had me reading quickly, determined to discover what happened in the past to the heroine's cousin and why there were killings happening now; and the ending had me worried for the heroine, but had me liking how things worked out for these two because she needs the hero in her life just as much as he needs her in his. I would recommend Her Last Word by Mary Burton, if you enjoy romantic suspense or books by authors Rita Herron, Karen Rose, Nancy Bush and Tess Diamond.
Kaitlin can still hear her cousin Gina screaming the man in the mask telling her to run or he would slit Gina's throat. It has been 15 years since that time and Kaitlin is finally ready to find her cousin or her body. Everyone thought she murdered her cousin out of jealousy did she or is something more sinister going on.
I got this book on Netgalley, but since I have Kindle Unlimited this month, I also got it in Audiobook - I love listening to thrillers!
Her Last Word is the story of Kaitlin Roe, whose cousin Gina disappeared fourteen years ago and was never heard of again. Kaitlin is working on a podcast, trying to gather all information she can to bring the cold case back to the public and enhance the chance of finding her. She was the last person to see Gina, as a man with a clown mask took her cousin, but her memory fails her. Did she recognize his voice? How did she end up with Gina's blood on her hands?
I really enjoyed the narration! It was pretty nicely done. The main characters Kaitlin and detective Adler were both very charismatic, complicated people that were so easy to cheer for. I was nervous at every turn when Kaitlin got closer and closer to finding the truth. I also love how cool and composed detective Adler was, but also very honest with himself about his feelings for her and maintained his professional behavior (mostly).
I also liked there was a bit of graphology in the investigation, I find that really interesting! The mystery was not so interesting in the beginning, to be honest, and it felt a bit generic: pretty girl everyone likes is probably dead but no one knows who did it. BUT. The mystery gets actually more complex and interesting as the story goes on.
The ending was actually very sweet and I connected with both main characters and warmed to their relationship. I highly recommend this book, if you don't mind a bit of romance in your thrillers!
A good book makes you feel like you're in the story. This is a good book. As the hunt for Gina unfolded, you were there trying to figure out "who done it". The added mystery throughout the book just added to the suspense and ultimate satisfaction when the solutions were revealed. I really enjoyed the book and will recommend to my mystery loving friends and family.
I love Mary Burton. I have read every single book she wrote since I discovered her. I love her plots. I love her rich multi-dimensional characters. This book does not disappoint.
The formula of this book is a bit different, in that there was interviews and then there. Is present day.
Before I write my reviews i do a bit of research of you are reading romantic suspense `~ there is going to be done sex. Do not downgrade a book because of it.
If you do not want to read foul language ~ don't downgrade the book ~ read the Bible or Llama Llama.
I would like to thank Mary Burton and the Publisher for an eArs Copy in exchange for an honest review.
I've read a few of Mary Burton before and have enjoyed her writings....unfortunately I couldn't keep my interest in this book. The see-saw between the narration and the interview sections somehow did not work for me.....and unfortunately I couldn't motivate myself to finish reading this story. Maybe I'll return to finishing this one of these days.
Awesome story. I keep me guessing and entertained throughout. Definitely recommended.. I have read most of this author's books and this one did not disappoint either.
I haven't read and Mary Burton books before and I cannot work out for the life of me why. She has fast become one of my favourite authors with this book - Her last word. Her writing style is similar to early Erica Spindler and Sandra Brown both favourites of mine. In this book we see Kaitlin return to the town where her cousin Gina went missing and she was the last person to see her before she was taken. Her reason for returning is simple- to make a podcast talking to those who had a connection with Gina before and after she went missing. Then people associated start dying. Detective Adler is assigned to one of the murders, he himself with a past that affects his present and we see the build of of tension between he and Kaitlin build throughout. The book draws the reader in and I finished this book over two days with sleep deprivation to prove how much I enjoyed this. I didn't guess the twist and the ending was a refreshing surprise for me. Overall I loved this book and do plan on reading more of Burton's work in the future.
4-1/2*
Talk about amazing suspense stories by author and you simply must come up with Mary Burton! I have read numerous books by Ms. Burton and she plays all her cards close to her chest in trying to figure out who the villain truly is! Once again, the twist of “who” the murderer was and the “why” of it was a closely guarded secret right up to the very end.
Fourteen years earlier, Kaitlin Roe was the lone witness to her cousin Gina’s abduction. She couldn’t get the memories out of her head and the guilt she felt over leaving her screaming so Kaitlin did what she’d always done - run away. Kaitlin was a troubled teen and used drugs and alcohol to drown out the memories which really never left her. Now she is ready to do something - anything - to solve the mystery of who killed her cousin.
However the ‘bad reputation” she had as a teen doesn’t make people very agreeable to talk to her. When the people she has started to talk to somehow end up murdered, it becomes even harder to to get people to open up and it seems her questions seem to have drawn the murderer out of retirement and put a target on Kaitlin’s back.
Even as Detective John Adler is drawn into the cold case, he realizes that finding the murderer is a priority, but keeping Kaitlin save seems even more of a priority.
Fast action - lots of red herrings and a great twist ending. Just the way I like them!

I enjoyed this one very much. Light on the romance but since I love a good mystery that keeps me guessing, I am A. O. K with that!
