This is a bright, colorful book which contains a lot of information. The way it is set up allows parents to focus on one topic at a time rather than overwhelming children with the entire book at once. All of the color in the illustrations will hold a child's interest, and there are several spots which promote interaction.
This book is appropriate for children ages 2-6.
“How to Be a Big Kid” seems like it’s written for kids to read on their own... but I don’t think that the content is for the right age to do that. The tips are for a child too young to be reading at that level. So they might like listening to it and doing some of the activities, but there’s no space in the book for some of them (like drawing a picture.) Overall, it’s just ok.
This book is informative for little minds and ADORABLE! I read it to my 3.5, 6 and 8 year-olds and it engaged all of them. My preschooler loved answering the questions and pointing out the things she knew, like body parts and animals. It touches on all sorts of things, from the solar system, to not talking to strangers, to being a good friend. I did have to skip over one little part on the families page, as it refenced a girl having 2 daddies.
Overall it was a very well done book. I would recommend it to parents of 2-6 year-olds.
A great book for preschoolers!
How to Be a Big Kid explores subjects from potty training and hygiene to staying safe, going to school, and much more. It is a great conversation starter for parents and kids and provides fun ideas to enrich curiosities and expand children's knowledge of themselves and the world.
I highly recommend it for any parent of preschool age children.
This guide for preschoolers covers topics such as being a friend, having a sleepover, good foods to eat, taking care of the earth, and going to school. Bright and color spreads make this an appealing book for children. My kids (5-year-old twins) said they liked it somewhat--this was reviewing stuff they already know, not really providing them new information. some parts seemed like a little simplistic for kids who are about to start school (like the nursery rhymes), but all in all, it's a nice book and would probably be really good for 3- to 4-year-old children.
I read an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
This book is a book of facts and tips written towards a preschool audience. It has encouragement for kids to be kind, take care of themselves, and to behave. It is cute but is not my cup of tea as I think it is lacking depth even for a book geared towards small children. It is also not terribly enjoyable foe the adult reader as it is repetitive and some tips have titles and some don't and the titles are not always the main idea of the page. It bounces around a bit too much for my liking.
Many books for preschoolers are too simplified or only cover one topic. Not How to Be a Big Kid! This book is not a sit down and read through type of book, each spread in the book covers a different topic and often includes interactive ideas for writing, creating, or discussing the topic with your child. I would recommend this book to anyone homeschooling their preschoolers, preschool teachers, parents, and families of all types! Although this book is aimed at preschoolers, the extra info on each page means that it will stretch into the future with children getting more info on each reading. I cannot wait to get a physical copy of this book when it is released in May. My children loved the colorful illustrations and I know this book will become a valuable part of their library.
Cute and useful!
My 4yo has learned almost everything in the book through teaching him at home by the grownups. But having an actual book reinforces the ideas into his little brain so that he knows what mammy and daddy have taught him are important. The illustrations are bright and fun. Text is simple and concise. I would have to say "How to be a Big Kid" is a comprehensive guide to preschooler. I have to buy an actual copy so that I could go over the ideas with him together. Thanks DK for the e-gallery and your continuous effort on creating excellent reference books.
This is the perfect preschool self-help book. It gives tiny nuggets of information that help preschoolers learn themselves and the world around them.
HOW TO BE A BIG KID by DK has a lot of information displayed in a colorful display that will help parents pick topics to discuss with their kids about growing up. It is non-fiction so I appreciated that you could cover one or two topics with your children at a time and really discuss the information with them. The bright colors will keep their interest and there is a good amount of content that is interactive. The topics cover learning their names and spelling to manners to sleepovers to areas of interest like school and space and seasons. I will definitely pick this one up for my 4 year old son and think it's a perfect book for 2-6 year old, depending on the type of child you have.
I received an ARC of this novel from NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
From the mouth of my four-year-old babe: ‘I liked the pictures. I knew some stuff. But learned some other stuff!’
How to Be a Big Kid is a fantastic primer for preschool-aged children. It features an encyclopedia of necessary knowledge for the youth set. Basic manners, classic rhymes, and colorful pages of animals are arranged with welcoming illustrations.
I would recommend this book to any library’s childrens room, preschool, or to any parent with a young child. My daughter really enjoyed it.
Thank you to DK for the opportunity to review How to be a Big Kid.
