This was my first Nancy Thayer book, and I chose it because I really enjoy stories about Nantucket. It was similar to books by Elin Hilderbrand, or Anne Rivers Siddons (though with a bit less drama). Even though it was titled A Nantucket Wedding, it was really about the summer leading up to the wedding, the relationship between two people, and the joining of two families made up of interesting and complicated characters. I like that the couple getting married were both in their fifties, had both been married before and lost the loves of their lives. There aren't a lot of books out there about an "older" couple getting another chance at love. (I say "older" because David and Alison were not that much older than myself!) There wasn't a lot new here, but it was a quick and enjoyable read.
This is a great book. It was warm, inviting, and had some family twists that I enjoyed. This is a great beach read and will be perfect for this coming beach season. The family goes that real issues that are relatable and that is good!
A Nantucket Wedding is an easy summer read. David and Alison are planning a wedding on Nantucket and they spend the summer entertaining their adult children and their grandchildren in an effort to blend their families. As always there is a little drama and many meaningful moments for them as they become a family. Nancy Thayer has written another wonderful, light beach read that feels like summer!!
Ah, family! What is more special and important and all-encompassing? I love reading about families and Nancy Thayer (once again) has done an outstanding job at creating a family that pulls you in right from the beginning and has you begging to read more about them. The characters are so engaging and have such realistic issues and events, good and bad, that you feel connected to them and can relate. I loved each and every one of them, including the intricacies of the relationships, and I did not want the book to end! The reading was easy and carefree, and very well written. Highly recommended to all.
Deep emotions, personal struggles, fears and insecurities abound in this brilliantly touching tracing the lives of four women over a summer spent anticipating a wedding. Sisters finally find a way to relate to each other. A step-daughter to be is battling a self-manufactured battle for what she feels is rightfully hers. Amid the drama is the soon to be bride: mother of the sisters and wary and careful of the step-daughter.
Nancy Thayer hits the excellence mark with A Nantucket Wedding!
David and Allison are getting married and because this is not the first marriage for either of them, it comes with the unique challenges of trying to blend all the different personalities. It not only tells the story of them preparing for their wedding, but also delves into the lives of their children and all that they are dealing with.
I am a huge fan of this author's books and this one did not disappoint. This will make a great beach read!
Enjoyable, great read. Loved the sisters relationship. Really makes me wish I could head out to the beach right now.
Author Nancy Thayer brings the reader to Nantucket Island for a wedding between Alison and David, a widow and a widower who have met and fallen in love and are now in the process of getting married. The story opens with Alison having her two married daughters spending the weekend for them to bond and find dresses for the wedding. Alison's two daughters are very different; Felicity is an earth mother and Jane is a type A personality with a high paced job and a carefree lifestyle. While Alison is their mother they have two different fathers (divorce/death). David also has two adult children with two different personalities. The storyline takes off dealing with what happens that weekend and what unfolds as the wedding gets closer. There's a lot going on, not only with the upcoming wedding, but also with the marriages of the adult children. This story moves along quite quickly holding the reader's attention and making one keep reading to see what's going to happen next. The story ends with a beautiful wedding and all parties involved happily involved.
I read an ARC of Nacy Thayer's A Nantucket Wedding in exchange for a fair review. I love Nantucket Island and felt very much transported as I read about this blended family getting to know one another during summer escapes to the beach house. It had everything I could want in a beach read, a geat location and characters I cared about. Of course, my rinky hotel stays could never compare to David's luxurious beach house. Hmm, that's why I read. A nice escape
This book is a fast, easy and enjoyable read. It has just the right amount of relationship issues, love and sex. It is a great book for summer reading,
A good summer/beach read from this prolific author. The older couple to be re-married are well portrayed.. The siblings on both sides have "issues" which could threaten this fairy-tale wedding. The ending is expected.
A Nantucket Wedding by Nancy Thayer is sweet story of two families brought together by a Wedding. Alison, who lost her husband a few years ago, never thought she would find love again; but when she meets David, who also lost his spouse years before, she has another chance at happiness. When David and Alison decide to get married again, they begin to plan a wedding in Nantucket. Both have married and grown children, and grandchildren.
Alison wants her daughters to meet David’s family and try to bring them all together during the summer at David’s Nantucket mansion. We get to meet Alison’s two daughters, Jane and Felicity, who have been somewhat distant over the years. Felicity has two children, and her husband is a workaholic, who doesn’t have time to spend with them; and Felicity begins to suspect that he is having an affair with his personal assistant. Jane is happily married, with both being successful lawyers, but she finds herself changing as she grows older. She and Scott never wanted children, only to work and have fun travelling. Now Jane finds herself yearning for a child, and her husband is dead set against it. When the girls arrive in Nantucket, both Felicity and Jane begin to grow closer, and enjoy being able to talk about the things in their lives that is causing trouble. As the family continues to get together each weekend, prior to the wedding, we learn about each of their own problems.
Jane and Scott’s marriage slowly begins to fall apart, neither agreeing on the subject of children. When Jane insists that he go to Nantucket, Scott will refuse, and leave for a hiking trip, with a hint of a possible divorce. Felicity confronts her husband about his assistant, and though she managed to bring him one weekend to Nantucket, he came away with bitter and jealous thoughts of the rich family Alison is marrying into, and continues his workaholic ways, ignoring the family. Though this disrupts their lives, Jane and Felicity become so much closer, as sisters should be.
Poppy will confront Alison as interfering with her takeover of her father’s business, but Alison will prove that she has Poppy’s best interest in mind, especially since Poppy is pregnant. This will somewhat makes their relationship a little better.
As the wedding gets closer, things will happen that will change things for all. Rather than me spoil it for you, I suggest you read this book. A Nantucket Wedding was a nice storyline of families, issues and angst dividing them, relationships built, and a wedding that brings them all together. I did like Alison, David, Jane and Felicity. I thought at first Ethan was cute, and nice; but by the end he was just a flirt, who had no serious intentions. Noah was a jerk, Scott was too stubborn, and Poppy wasn’t very likeable. But overall, I thought this was a very good story that kept my attention throughout. This makes a perfect read for the beach or when you have a day to yourself just to read.
Perfect summer read, especially for the Nantucket lovers. A sweet story of a newly blended family coming together, learning from each other to embrace summers end with a perfect Nantucket wedding.
I really enjoy many books by this author but just couldn't get into this one. I tried several times but the characters didn't resonate with me.
An easy to read, predictable story from an author well known for producing good beach reads taking place on Nantucket. 2 daughters learn to be sisters, not as they were as kids growing up, but as grownups with issues, all while helping mom prep for her wedding. The future step-siblings create more issues, making for lots of minor sub plots.
Easy reading. Not deep at all, but good for entertainment or escape. Thank you NetGalley for the chance to read an advance copy in return for an honest opinion.
I’ve read and enjoyed many of Ms. Thayer’s books over the years and this was an easy, comfortable story full of family. As an older couple, Alison and David have unexpectedly fallen in love and are planning a dream wedding. As they each meet family members and all visit David’s house on Nantucket, many details were true to life. All families have issues and especially when blending families.
I did not like Noah, Felicity’s husband, and wanted to smack him. I’m not sure how Poppy’s husband put up with her as she came across as very controlling, anxious about her father’s company and will, and was very bossy. Jane changed her mind about something she and her husband Scott had agreed upon when they got married, which caused quite a conflict. Ms. Thayer writes well-developed characters and it’s interesting how much you can care for or dislike her characters. There are a lot of characters in this book and I sometimes had to stop briefly to recall how they were related.
There were a variety of family dynamics and plenty of distractions, disagreements, and conflict to keep the story interesting. I enjoyed several parts of the ending but I would have liked for a different outcome for one character but not every relationship has a happy-ever-after.
The time spent on the island sounded idyllic with all of the wonderful food, the beach, boating, and swimming. It made me what to book a trip to enjoy the relaxed lifestyle.
Thanks to Netgalley, the publisher and author for allowing me an early read of this book.
First of all, thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC of A Nantucket Wedding. This was my first beach read of 2018 and I absolutely LOVED it. I sometimes find beach reads to be hit or miss but this is a definite hit. I could not put it down.
An enjoyable summer read about Alison, who has found love again after losing her husband several years before. But at her age, will her daughters accept David as her new spouse? Will David's adult children accept her now that their mother is also gone? Adult children can certainly throw a wrench into new love and marriage! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I'm sure that you will too...will be a great summer beach read!
Read A Nantucket Wedding to escape life for a while. Join Alison as gets ready to marry again. She is joined by her two daughter as different as their fathers were. She is also getting to know her new stepchildren. Enjoy the beautiful scenery as we discover how hard it can be to combine families. Everyone secrets and hidden motives will come out. I love that the main character is a more mature woman who has discovered unexpectedly found another love. Her wedding makes all her children look at their own marriages and what they may need in the future.
I enjoyed this one - it was for sure, a quick read. There have been some Nancy Thayer books that I loved and others that weren't quite as good. This one was good and it'll do well with the summer reading lists. The book was less centered on the actual wedding and more on the people that the wedding brought together. The story centers on Allison and her upcoming wedding. As an older bride, she has her 2 adult daughters and her fiance, David's adult children to deal with. For the daughters of the bride, you sort of want to smack Felicity and force her to divorce her husband. He's a narcissistic shit. Jane and her husband have their own challenges and the twist with them isn't what you'd see coming at all. David's adult children have major, major issues. What I do find odd in this book is that everyone can jet off to Nantucket every weekend in the summer. Most of the characters do not live in Massachusetts and there's not one mention of traffic trying to get to ferries, planes, etc. That's utterly absurd; there's a massive amount of people and traffic from Memorial Day onward to get to the islands. Overall a good fast read and perfect for summer.
