Thanks to NetGalley for the chance to read an a advanced copy of the book in exchange for my honest opinion.
I am a huge Nancy Thayer fan and reading this book in February made me wish for an afternoon at the beach thinking about summer and warm weather. I love that the book takes place both on island and back in the character's hometowns as it gives a little more of a glimpse into their realities and coming to Nantucket for the weekends.
This book is about families merging together, sisters & their relationships with their mom and that while everything may appear perfect on the surface we all are going through different struggles and how we respond to them. While some of the characters you have a hard time rooting for, I was still invested in their lives and how the wedding and merging of the families was going to go.
If you are looking for a fun and easy spring/summer read I'd recommend this book!
A Nantucket Wedding by Nancy Thayer is a great story. I basically read this book in one day. Ms. Thayer’s books are always enjoyable. This particular story is about changes and adaptations made in a blended family. I loved how the issues were resolved. As in real life, not everything had the fairytale ending; but the story was the best. Thanks to Net Galley for the advance copy.
Alison and David are getting married in September and Alison is determined to spend the summer trying to unite the families at their Nantucket beach house. Alison's daughters, Jane and Felicity, live very different lives and have never been close but Alison is hoping time at the beach as adults will change this. David's children, Poppy and Ethan, are another challenge. The summer brings changes for everyone but by the time they get to the wedding in September they are family. A story of family, and marriage, and love and being adult.
Alison is planning her first real wedding. She’s been married twice before, divorced once and once widowed. But she’s never had a real wedding, now she’s in her 50’s and she’s met a man she loves. David is a wealthy widower, both Alison and her fiancée have grown children and grandchildren.
Alison dreams of them all being a big, happy family. She pictures holidays spent together in the family beach house.
But there are many different personalities here and of course it doesn’t go perfectly smoothly.
I’ll just do a little quick run through of the “kids”.
Alison has two grown daughters, Jane and Felicity. We hear early on that they have drama but I am happy the drama between these two was practically non existent in this story.
Jane is the oldest. She’s a lawyer and her husband is a lawyer. They are creatures of habit. Jane wants to make a major life change and her husband isn’t onboard.
Felicity is pretty, happy go lucky, a stay at home mom to two kids and married to Noah. Noah is having an affair. I mention that because it’s on the book cover but you have to read a good chunk of the book before Felicity finds out.
David has two adult children.
Poppy works at his company and is planning to take over when he retires. She kind of sees his entire relationship with Alison only in how it affects her personally.
Ethan is a flirt and starts hitting on Jane within hours of meeting her.
I liked the change in perspective here, that it was the mom getting married rather than the daughter. I found Alison to be a likable character who kept trying her best to make everyone happy.
As for what I liked less, jeese the guys in this book. Ugh Noah. Noah is the worst. Ethan doesn’t seem to have any redeeming qualities either. I’m not mad at Scott, in the Jane/Scott storyline I was more frustrated with Jane.
I also wasn’t a huge fan of the ending. I don’t want to risk any spoilers by being too specific but I felt some characters got an unrealistically, abruptly happy ending while one got a depressing ending.
If we’re going to give one of them an unrealistically, abruptly happy ending can’t we just do that for all of them?
I got to read an early copy of this e book through NetGalley. Nancy Thayer is one of my favorites to read and I appreciated the chance to read this early.

So many family members and so many story lines. I couldn't put the book down. I am a big fan of Nancy Thayer and this book certainly did not disappoint! Allison and David find unexpected love and use David's beach house on Nantucket island to bring their families together, before their wedding. A very distinct group of personalities, some you love and cheer for, some that you need to read their unfolding stories to try to understand and respect, and some that are just going to stay unlikeable, and that is OK too! A story of an emerging blended family and the challenges that they face.
Allison has found love again and brings her daughters to her beach house to help plan the wedding. This story focuses on sisters, the merging of families, and challenges that most adults face in careers, children, and marriage. The book is based in Nantucket, as well as the home cities of the characters. It was a pleasant read from Thayer, as I had expected.
I thoroughly enjoyed this. It has great family interaction. Problems resolved with humor. Enjoy it for yourself!
This is the first book I've read by this author. At first, I wasn't quite sure -- a lot of back and forth dialogue between the characters. However, as I continued on, I found myself unable to put the book down. I loved the relationships between the characters. I was invested in their outcome. I look forward to reading some of her other novels.
Nancy Thayer is an extremely popular author in our library and this book will raise her status even more. It has now become my favorite book she’s written and that’s saying a lot. Widowed Alison has found love again with wonderful David and they’re planning to marry. The majority of the book is set in his Nantucket home where Alison tries to successfully blend the two families together over the course of a summer and before their September wedding day. With her two daughters, their spouses, and children and David’s two children along with their families it’s no small feat. Add problems with both her daughters marriages, and getting David’s daughter to accept her, you’ve got an interesting plot. Thayer’s characters are so real you quickly become invested in everyone’s life. The only downside was finishing the book too quickly, as it’s a long wait for the next. I highly recommend.

Always a given for a spring beach read, Nancy Thayer swings and misses on this one. The plot has too many large holes that get a quick patch without true resolution – then why mention them in the first place (like Heather and her support dogs – the reason for them is never mentioned, so why even have it), Alison’s daughters seem to begin to treat this Nantucket beach house like its their own well before the wedding – I am totally #TeamPoppy when she brings up concerns about money prior to the wedding.
What I loved: It was a treat to not have the entire book based on the Island and I am very thankful for the usualy restaurants and bars NOT to be mentioned . I’ve read all of your books. I know where people eat, shop, drink and go on Nantucket without every having to be there. But it was nice to see all 4 women join forces to be catty against newcomer Esmerelda..
What I didn’t love: Where to begin? The men in the book are all kind of major jerks: David is a little controlling; Steve is closeminded to the point of stubbornness; Noah is a hipster douchebag, and Ethan – there are no words to describe him. Poppy’s husband is pretty much unmentionable since he barely gets a mention in the book. The women are really no better – Jane being hypocritical; Felicity is just fricken clueless (seriously – you won’t bring $2400 a month to the table – there are things like taxes, social security.. she is a half-wit); Poppy is a petulant spoiled brat who has a crappy attitude towards work, although she gets a pass from the hormones; and Alison - well I see where Felicity gets her cluelessness from. Alison is so passive in her own life and just lets everything happen – seriously - how about you take an active role in your wedding and then tell Esmerela to cut the crap about the head flower girl.
What I learned: Maybe its time for a new summer destination
Overall Grade: C

This book was a quick little romance read! Very enjoyable, and well written!
I read and reviewed an ARC copy of this book from Net Galley. My thoughts and opinions are my own.
Alison had a very happy marriage and was alone for years when her husband died. She met a very nice man, also a widow and they fell in love and got engaged. Bringing the families together for the wedding and just family life proved difficult at times. Resentment that Daddy was getting married again and a new woman was helping to call the shots. Marriages were tested. Sisterly relationships were tested.
Can a summer in Nantucket with a beach, sun and sand help bring a family together??.
Allison is engaged and planning a wedding to David, the man of her dreams. There are a few details that could complicate the wedding. Allison’s daughters, Felicity and Jane haven’t always gotten along. There is also David’s family, his children Poppy and Ethan.
This is a story about family and the dynamics and conflict within a family, whether it is by blood or marriage. This is also a story about love, compromise and forgiveness. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about these families. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy.
Nancy Thayer has been, and will likely always be, on the top of my "must read" author list. She seems to have a deep understanding of women - their actions and reactions, their insecurities as a group, and their need to have some well-earned power of their own. Finding a book centered around a wedding of a "well past her 20's" bride was a real gift and I loved every word. The characters were perfectly written and there were a few well done surprises. Loved it! And already looking forward to the next Nancy Thayer novel.
