This is my first book by this author and I have to say I really enjoyed this book! I loved the characters and the story line and I highly recommend it !
Too many of the characters and events in The Lost Sister just didn’t ring true for me. I found Idris to be somewhat stereotypical, and couldn’t believe that a mother would leave her young daughter, whom she loved dearly, to join him and his group. Having said that, the author did create an interesting story that moved from one decade to another, told from different points of view. And the search for the lost sister did prove to be intriguing with some great twists. Maybe my claustrophobia for caves also spoiled my enjoyment of this book. I’m sorry not be able to give it more stars. I’m sure many other readers will love it!!
Becky meets up with her mother she has not seen for ten years and a family secret is revealed. Becky has a half sister who she has never met. Becky embarks on a journey to find her sister and to try to come to terms with her Mother leaving her as a child.
The story is told alternating between Becky in the present and her mother, Selma, in the past.
I loved where the story was set and the descriptions of the places Becky visits on her journey to find herself, her sister and her lost relationship with her mother.
I am a fan of Tracy’s books and this novel is as good as those that have come before.
Thanks to Net Galley and Avon Books for an ARC.
A very different type of book for me. I did feel compelled to finish it to see the outcome. Mental illness is a terrible thing add postpartum depression to the mix only makes it worse. Following Becky on her journey for her lost sister and trying to find the reasons for her mother’s behavior makes for an interesting read..
Every Book I have read from Tracy Buchanan I have to sit back and take it all in. This book will be with me a long time. With all her books I can relate to them with my family. Tracy's latest book The Lost Sister is just Beautifully written and written with so much care and love. She covers, abandonment issues, mental health, Relationship between mother, daughter and siblings, neglect and abuse etc. Everything you need from a book.
But I am missing a few things...........You will need a quiet corner and a box of Tissues. You will need them for this book.
This amazing book is told from two perspectives, One from Becky's mum Selma from the 90's and the others is from Becky from the present day. This book draws you in from the first page with lots of twists and turns and it will make you cry so be aware. Its a real page turner, I’d definitely recommend this book., well all of Tracy's books to my friends and family. Just brilliantly written. Well Done Tracy for another excellent book and it made my mascara run!
Many thanks to Netgalley, Tracy Buchanan and Avon Books UK for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest opinion. If I could give you 10 stars I would........I so need a hug now!!!
**4.5 stars**
Tracy Buchanan knows how to weave a great story.......
In 1991, eight year old Becky is confused when her Mum leaves her and her father to live in the local caves with a group of people. Having very spasmodic communication with her mother over the years leaves her angry and yet years later when Becky hears from her dying mother, she can’t stay away. She finds out that she had a sister and Becky begins a journey to find her but it also becomes a journey to find herself.
Set over two time lines, there is Becky’s mothers’ story and then the present day as Becky tries to find her sister. I usually favour one time frame over another but these came together seamlessly and both had me enthralled. With lies, deception and cycles of depression, lives are altered and I certainly didn’t see the ending being played out as it did.
I have read all of Tracy’s books and this is one of her best (The Atlas of Us, still remains my favourite)
Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher for a copy to read.
Described as a drama The Lost Sister is much more than this as it reads like a thriller with suspence, intrigue, and a very unexpected ending. A very satisfying read. The shifts between two points of view gave the story depth and pace. I think characterisations are believable as was the setting of cave .
This is a good read although different to my normal reads and I did find, in parts, it was a bit slow and hard going.
I did finish the book but for me personally it didn't really have the 'grab' factor.
This book is something totally different Selma is feeling trapped in her life and is drawn to the group of cave dwellers leaving her daughter behind. The book moves back in time and shows the life that Selma lived and then skips forward to follow her daughter Becky as she discovers her mums story. There is an amazing discovery at the end which I did not see coming. Just a beautiful book which is engaging and keeps you reading
This book is a new author for me. I found the book to be an addictive, page-turning, emotional thriller. Certainly not what I expected after reading the blurb and I definitely did not guess the ending, which is a real plus for me, as with some writers you can guess how the story is going to end, but this one had me guessing the whole time and not realising what was about to happen in the end.
A definite author to be watched and recommended to anyone who love thriller writers.
I am looking forward to reading more from Tracey Buchanan in the future.
The Lost Sister by Tracy Buchanan is ultimately about two women who set out on journeys looking for something. Selma is a writer who has one book published. The second book she insists she is writing is non-existent. She suffers from writers block and feels the pressures of domestic life to be stifling. When a mysterious man takes to living in a cave on the local beach he’s free spirited ways attract followers. Selma is witty, bored and attracted to this stranger who appeals to her artistic nature. She balks at the idea of moving into the cave with his cult like group but the freedom it offers finally lures her in. Her choices fuel her later success but also have consequences. In 2018, over 25 years later Becky her estranged daughter gets a call that Selma is dying. Becky is forced to confront her complex feelings about her mother. She also learns of a sister born in the cave. Becky sets out to find her, traveling to different cave dwelling groups across Europe. She slowly unravels the secrets of the mother that abandoned her and she also finds herself. Tracy Buchanan creates these very real fascinating characters that each have their own voice. This book is a great read, well written and doesn’t sugar coat the lives of Selma, Becky or any other characters. This book will hold your attention.
Big fan of Tracey's novels. It was very different from the last two books and that was a surprise. I was hooked after the first few pages. Some tears and one moment where I literally gasped. I won't say where or what happened. Another great book from Tracey!
Becky hasn't been in touch with her Mother for ten years. In fact her Mother played little part in her childhood beyond the age of 8. This is the time when her Mother went off to live in a cave with a group of people and most particularly the man she had fallen in love with.
I have given this book a 4 star review as 3/4 of it was worth the four stars. However I really didn't take to the twist at the end of the book which made me feel a bit cheated. There are just far too many coincidences at the end and it all became rather contrived.
The main body of the book, however, was interesting. Becky is a vet and quite happy with her life until her Mother suddenly reappears after 10 years. Becky has very understandable emotions which she works at throughout the book. We follow Becky as she learns about her Mother and grows to understand the past events. There are few other really main characters but those we do meet are interesting and well written.
It is such a shame that I felt the ending didn't work as I enjoyed the main body of the book. Perhaps the ending worked better for other people.
I received a free copy of this book via Netgalley.
Firstly, this is not my usual genre, I normally tend to go for psychological thrillers/detective series so this was taking a step out of my comfort zone and I’m so glad I did. This is my first read by Tracy Buchanan but I can say it certainly won’t be the last, you have converted me to read something other than blood & guts!!
This book was told from two perspectives, one from Becky’s mother Selma during the 90s and the other from Becky set in present day. I found the book to be very well written covering mental health, abandonment issues, relationships, bonds between sisters, neglect and abuse, the story draws you in, quite harrowing at times, there were so many twists and turns and the end WOW that’s all I’ll say can’t be giving it away now to those that are absolutely going to want to read it although may never go near a cave again!!! A real page turner, I’d definitely recommend this book to my friends and family.

The Lost Sister has an excellent plot and well developed characters. I enjoyed the author’s writing and will be reading more of her books..
The Lost Sister by Tracy Buchanan was the story of Becky who was reunited with her mother Selma after many years apart. He mother has only days to live and tells Becky that she has a sister. The book then tells Selma's story and Becky's journey to try and find the sister she has never met. I really enjoyed this book, the characters were excellent and the descriptions wonderful. This is the first book I have read by this author and I will certainly be reading more of her books. I would like to thank NetGalley and Avon Books UK for my e-copy in exchange for an honest review.
This is an absolutely amazing novel about mother’s and daughters, and the choices that we all face in our lives. The author delivers a powerful story told from two points of view and two different time spans. Fascinating! I was easily drawn In to both characters’ voices and kept turning page after page. I think she handled the subject of depression and mother-daughter relationships especially well. An absolutely fascinating read!
Thanks to NetGalley, the author and publisher for a preview copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
This book is really about relationships and the bond between sisters, even, in this case, one you never knew about in the first place. I really enjoyed this book, connected with the characters and the story and eagerly wanted to know how it could conclude. Looking forward to Tracy Buchanan's future books!
The Lost Sister is my first exposure to Tracy Buchanan’s work. She certainly writes a compelling story and it was that story that held my interest. The novel takes place in both the present day and the early 90s. I found myself more interested in the current day part of the story. I could feel Becky’s excitement, nervousness and anticipation as she searched for her missing sister. She was strong and resilient and very likeable. I didn’t care much for the other characters, I will say without hesitation that I absolutely did not anticipate the twists, turns and revelations at the end of the book. Not even a little bit. I’m giving this three and a half stars - it would have been four but there were some parts of the story that were a little unnerving and bothersome.
Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for the ARC.
I found this difficult to get into, but persevered and found the ending was rewarding and worth the read. The ending was touching and hid a twist.
