Thanks to #netgalley for a reading copy of this debut. I am an avid crime reader so when I deviate from the genre, the book really has to capture my interest. Sadly this one didn’t. It doesn’t have the humour of the Rosie Project nor the affinity as Eleanor Oliphant had.
Susan is 45, single and about to become a first time mother. She is very self contained and rather prickly like the cacti she grows. Her mother is recently deceased and has left the family home to her brother Ed. Susan is sure that her mother must have had some form of dementia and sets about to contest the will. Along the way we learn about her life growing up, mainly living with an alcoholic father and a mother who doted on Ed. The twist at the end is very obvious but a nice ending to the story.
