Daphne and Heath are headed to stay at a seven day retreat. It’s with a professional who can hopefully help Heath deal with his nightmares and his past. It soon begins to feel ominous. And I dreaded what was going to happen next. The story had a chilling and suspenseful tone. I could just picture the institute they were staying at.
Solid mystery-thriller. Very fast-paced which at first was exhilarating but by the end moulded into being frantic and too much happening in multiple storylines for me to keep up. It was entertaining but they were a lot of parts that could've been more fleshed out.
What an intense read. I would classify this horror as there was a bit too much gore for it to fit in the psychological suspense category. What I loved most is that the twist comes in the middle of the book. I loved the unexpected placement of it! It really set up a wild back half. The pacing and sense of unease is just perfect. Even though some of the details are far fetched, I couldn’t put it down. Recommended for fans of horror.
First-class psychological mystery about the past and present secrets.
Daphne loves Heath with all her might. He is her soulmate, the only one to (maybe) trust. For Heath it is the same.
But some secrets are really dark - and they are not somewhere in the past, they are present.
Without any spoilers - this is very well written psychological mystery about the power of darkness. Everyone did something wrong in the past. And these with conscience feel the burden of their wrongdoings and are in the need of forgiveness. These without conscience on the other hand...
I very much like the eriting style and the underlined questions this novel poses. Generally the books about the darkness are prone to enter the area of madness and unbelievability, valuing the scare effect over the real explanations. Here, the authoress sees the darkness more realistically and addresses the real responsibilities.
The prose is elegant and the descriptions are very vivid.
I will follow this authoress from now on.
Love Love Love! Emily Carpenter is such an amazing writer! You never know what is going to happen with each book she writes! From the first page to the last you are hooked! Never ever disappointed!
Daphne and Heath have their secrets from before they met. As they fall further into their relationship though the secrets come to light. How long can you keep your previous self hidden from your new love? Can they handle their own secrets? Can they handle the others?
A quick read full of tons of twists and turns.
I'm not usually a gothic type of person but I seriously enjoyed this. Great character development and it really kept my attention. Boy, did I like that ending. Endings seem so hard for some authors and I'm often disappointed. Not here. Definitely putting Ms. Emily Carpenter on my watch list for future books. She's one to follow.
Every Single Secret was a fun, twisty thriller that kept me guessing until the very end. Daphne's attempts to reconcile with her past while helping her fiance were intriguing. I loved the nod to Wuthering Heights as well. I will definitely read more works by Emily Carpenter!
This was an amazing thriller. I recommend this author to others that love thrillers. Def 5 stars all the way.
What a thrill. This book kept me going until the very end. I love that it has a real conclusion but also leaves the future up to the reader's speculation. The blurb reminded me a lot of An Anonymous Girl, but with a couple's counseling retreat instead of a single girl in a social experiment. But of course, the twists and turns take a completely different directions.
Daphne and Heath are a perfect couple and although they both have dark pasts, they keep them to themselves and haven't shared their darkness with each other. Leading to their upcoming marriage, Heath changes his mind and determines to tell get help and tell Daphne the truth about his past. But she is hesitant. He convinces her to attend a counseling retreat with him......and the convoluted twists begin.
Of course, it isn't a surprise to the reader that everything isn't exactly as it appears. The place has far too many rules and secrets for me to have stuck around longer than a day. But Daphne is determined to be there for her future husband. Even on the page, the place creeped me out--in a great way. Oh the cliff, and the neighbor and the chef. Oh it was thrillingly delicious. And I couldn't stop.
Definitely recommend--but DISCLAIMER: this book has far more language than I enjoy.
We follow Daphne as she navigates her new engagement to Heath, the man of her dreams. Only, he is having nightmares that scare her, and he wants to break their pact of keeping the past in the past. So, she reluctantly joins him at a couples therapy retreat...
"Our minds were tricky things, manipulators of time and space, coloring events with our personal palette of rage, fear, or desire."
Now, we jump around a bit, from the 19th of October, the week leading up to this day, and Daphne's past. Daphne is an interesting character, sometimes a bit reckless. Daphne is a foster kid, has a thing for counting as a coping mechanism, and snaps a rubber band around her wrist when anxious.
I'm speechless at what this book represents and how easily it blurs the line between love and obsession. Forget what you think you know, the last few chapters throw you around and tosses everything you want to happen out.
"Sometimes I wonder if there's anywhere we can go to escape. The pain that's been inflicted upon us or that we inflict." - Gladys
Emily's writing is straight-forward, easy to follow, and to the point. She makes use of the jumps in time to keep us guessing, and while I thought I figured it all out, there were still a few surprises that I didn't see coming at all.
Personally, I liked to read about Daphne's past way more than the full story, and think that there is such a missed opportunity there to learn about the foster home and the girls that she shared her childhood with. Also, I liked the interaction between Daphne and Gladys too...
"We'd both kept our secrets, kept the doors shut and locked tight. And now, I had the worst feeling that those doors were about to burst wide open. That our secrets - beasts with claws and fangs and foul breath that had grown in the dark and transformed into something hideous - were on the verge of escaping."
This story is more creepy after you finish the book and let the story run through your mind for a while. What Emily wrote can really make you think about love, hate, obsession and passion - and the lengths people will go to to keep what they think they deserve.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and the author, for an ARC of this book, in exchange for an honest review.
This is the 2nd book that I have read by Emily Carpenter and I think she keeps getting better with each book she writes.
I highly recommend this book, I thought it was well written, original, addictive, twisty, exciting and suspenseful.
I can’t wait to read her next book, Reviving The Hawthorn Sisters
Emily Carpenter mixes southern lore with psychological twists and does it with grace! Loved this book and love this author.
This was my first book by this author, and I can positively say that I really enjoyed reading this one. Its captivating. For sure I will be checking other books written by this author.
I think I will settle on 3.5 stars here. The beginning was a 4 star read but then the story went a bit off the tracks for me. I was intrigued by the whole idea of the couples therapy retreat and I wanted to know about both Daphne and Heath's pasts.
I enjoyed the back and forth in time as this seems to be a writing tool in most thrillers these days.
The author did give me some unexpected twists and turns. But the last part of the book was less enjoyable than the beginning. I was really hoping for a much stronger finish and while it was interesting, it just did not live up to expectations that I had going in. I enjoyed the book but it wasn't love.
Thanks to Netgalley and Lake Union Publishing for allowing me to read this book.
Secrets can be devastating...
Daphne and her fiance are hitting a rough patch in their relationship, but when they head off for a couple's retreat, she is going to learn there is a lot more at play than she thought. Not only has she kept her past secret, but he is hiding some major ones as well, and she may not be ready to deal with the full truth of what she is about to learn...
WOW, this is a great book for those "I need a weekend getaway," with a little mystery and drama thrown in!
Emily Carpenter is quickly becoming an author that I will watch for. I have enjoyed her psychological thrillers, but I need to be prepared for that huge twist that has come in all of the books I have read by her. The story begins with the main characters Daphne and Heath keeping every single one of their secrets a secret, even from one another. It seems that Heath's secrets are giving him nightmares and he wants to go on a retreat where he will have some counselling. Daphne agrees to go, but refuses to participate in the counselling. For an engaged couple this seems odd, but Heath agrees. The setting of the old house where the retreat takes place, adds to the suspense and creepiness, giving it a bit of a gothic feel. Knowing that they are being taped while in their rooms and on the grounds was another warning bell for me and Daphne was also very uncomfortable. Will Heath be able to convince Daphne to participate in counselling to help their relationship?
This book grabbed me right from the beginning. I wasn't sure about either of these characters. They were both hiding so much and didn't seem willing to share with one another. As we learn about their pasts through flashbacks and sessions, I was still not sure what to believe. Talk about unreliable narrators. As both Heath and the doctor tried to trick Daphne into revealing her secrets, the other guests seem to disappear. What is really going on in this house? Just as I thought I had things figured out, there was a huge twist that left my jaw hanging. I was racing through this story to find out what was going on and would Daphne and Heath come out of this situation as a couple or even as whole individuals. You will have to be able to suspend belief during parts of this story, which I was, as it is fiction. Another great and thrilling read from Emily Carpenter.
A wonderful thriller with great writing. I absolutely loved the transition in the timeline. I find it really helped build this story and flesh it out. The writing was phenomenal and kept me interested and invested in the story.
Another mystery with "Secret" in the title. Aptly, as most mysteries are knee deep in secrets. Every Single Secret is creepy and suspenseful. I liked Daphne, our main character, and found the secondary characters enjoyable as well. Carpenter did a good job keeping you guessing and the pages turning.
Thank you Netgalley for this, but I found this was not the book for me at the time, if I decide to pick it up I'll come back and modify this comment, at the moment won't be reviewing.
