I am a huge fan of cozy mysteries so I’m very partial to these types of stories. I always love discovering a new series. I appreciated the protagonist and the unique aspects she brought to the story,
I haven't read any books by this author but I felt like it didn't take away from my reading experience. The mystery was enjoyable. The only thing I didn't care for was some of the foul language.
Charley Carpenter's life is a bit on hold as renovations at her vintage store are moving at a sluggish pace due to some setbacks. A distraction comes along when her awful neighbor's adult daughter is murdered in the basement and Charley can't help but wonder if it's related to a recent question submitted to the local paper's advice column "Ask Jackie" that alluded to a child in danger. Her police officer boyfriend, Marcus, is off the case, but that doesn't stop Charley from trying to find out what happened since she might be next on the killer's list.
I previously read the first book in this series, and my previous assessment still stands. I love the small town of Oakwood, Ohio and it's many inhabitants. The writing is good, Charley is a very likeable and capable main character, and the mystery is good, giving you hints and clues along the way without making it too obvious. My one complaint also still stands which is the language. It has a moderate amount of moderate level language plus a couple of f words which I could really do without. Overall, though, a great cozy mystery series I'll probably revisit in other installments. I'd give it a 3 1/2, but I like Charley and her friends so much I'll round up to a 4. Thanks to NetGalley for the free ebook.
Charley and her gang of friends and family are at it again. This time, her neighbor's young daughter is murdered, and she had also previously sent a note to a local advice column. Really enjoyed this one. My favorite in the series so far. Liked the characters, the plot and the banter. Highly recommend this cozy mystery series.
This was a fun read! This is actually the third book in Leslie Nagel’s Oakwood Mystery series, but it can easily be read as a standalone novel. The characters are interesting, though, and now I need to read the previous stories to get some more history.
In this book, Charley Carpenter is renovating her shop, Old Hat Vintage Fashions, and is working from home. Her neighbors are secretive and standoffish. One day, a young woman, the adult daughter of the woman next door talks with Charley in the yard. Charley gets the sense s the woman may need help, but she returned to the house. The next day, the woman is dead and Charley can’t help but investigate what happened.
I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a great cozy mystery.
A great book by a fantastic author. The writing is excellent and the mystery keeps you turning the pages. Characters are well developed. Highly recommend.
What a fascinating book. I was impressed by the storyline and the characters were all well written and complex. Where there are complex storylines combined with intriguing characters the reader experience is magnified tremendously. To have a book that is well written as well as entertaining is a delight. Reading is about escaping your world and entering another one. The word building was phenomenal in this book. Here I forgot about my own life and was immersed in the world created by the author. I would recommend this book.
Engrossing cozy mystery which is the third book in a series, Oakwood Book Club Mystery. First one I read in the series though.
Solid "who done it" that had me guessing until the end. Characters were quirky enough to tantalize me to read more of the series. Only downside was that I became a little confused by the multitude of suspects; lots of twists and turns.
Set in real life Oakwood, Ohio, The Advice Column murders has all the elements of a really great cozy mystery. It has the perfect mix of sleuthing and everyday life. The plot is well-paced and the characters are delightful. I loved getting to know Charley, her family and friends. This book is the third in the series and I cannot wait to read the rest.
I love to read books set in places I have been. I used to have family in Oakwood and enjoyed picking out some of the places I have been.
Thanks to NetGalley for sending me this book.
I enjoyed this book and found it soothing during a difficult time! When I read this book, I was hooked by the fun and cozy mystery by it. I would recommend this story to cozy book lovers or anyone who loves a good advice column!
Unfortunately, I requested this book, but didn't get to read it before it was archived. I wish I had gotten to it.
Charley Carpenter is at it again. She unravels a thoroughly complicated family situation in which two are murdered. The entire story hinges on a letter to advice columnist Dear Jackie.
Marcus is away when the first murder happens and his boss calls in county detective Drummond. Charley manages to solve the mystery in spite of not sleeping, her store undergoing renovation and worry about Marcus losing his job because of her investigation.
This was such an interesting puzzle of a mystery this time. I really enjoyed following Charley through the story. I read the author’s bio at the end and realized Oakwooc is a real place. Now I want to visit! Only sometimes is a cozy mystery set in a real town. Somehow that makes it even more fun to imagine the characters lives.
I think this could be read as a stand-alone. But it is the third book in the Oakwood Mystery series.
This is an excellent mystery, sexy, witty, dangerous. I loved all the main characters! What a hot detective! Mark! Oh my! I am having a hard time with females being the heroes, while this incredible detective stands by, to keep her safe? I am deducting one star for punishing men, in order to flaunt her feminist attitude! A real man would not put up with her trying to do his job; it makes Marc look like a wimp! Plus, why no sex, as in bed talking, her sleeping over; it is obvious he loves her, more than she loves him! Real men are not that needy!
I recommend! Thank you Netgalley!

I enjoyed this book as I like mysteries.I only gave it 3 stars because it seemed confusing at times.I think it would be better to read the other books by this author first.
I started reading this book, sadly I was unable to finish it. The story was not interesting to me and it seemed to drag on.
I didn't read any of the earlier books in the series, which on one hand didn't make it hard to follow along but it would have been nice to understand some of the references and follow the character development. Overall though, I thought the book was quite good and the mystery built up nicely. I did figure out who did it before it was revealed but I didn't have the motive figured out and that was interesting. Overall a good book that I would definitely recommend.
Good book! The writing style was decent and it was suspenseful. I enjoyed it and would recommend it to others! I would read more by this author.
I really liked this cozy mystery. I haven't read any of the previous books in the series, so felt a little like I was missing some of the characters' background, but I still felt able to connect with them in this book. I enjoyed the mystery - it was very unique and I didn't guess the perpetrator until the end. I'd definitely read more in this series!
Can you imaging seeking advice and winding up with a murder? Charley is smack in the middle of this one, her hands are way more than full. I love the combination of a detective with a cozy mix. This well crafted, deeper than usual story had me not wanting to stop reading till the end arrived. I can't wait for more in this series, this was just what I needed for the week.
My copy came from Net Galley. My thoughts and opinions are my own. This review is left of my own free will.
The Advice Column Murders is part of the Oakwood Book Club cozy series. This is the first book I have read in the series and I was able to read it just fine without reading any others. I do want to read the book or books before this.
The main character Charley is like a small town Nancy Drew who is dating Detective Marcus Trenault. When a neighbor is murdered Charley is on the case. Using the advice column Ask Jackie she finds some clues that could lead to a killer.
This is a fun book and I cannot wait to read more.
