I want to start off by saying that I love Lisa Unger's writing. I fell in love with the main character Poppy right away. I've read other reviews that people were saying they had a hard time finding Poppy's voice. But I did not. I don't know what that says about me but I found it so easy to read and see what Poppy was going through following the murder of her husband. Was she obsessed about wanting to solve the murder so she could move on - yes! But isn't that the point of her mental state. She couldn't let it go. What does it feel like to live with the not knowing who killed your husband. I found it fascinating! I loved the relationship she had with her best friend. Its the kind of friendship we all long for. I think if you are looking for a psychological thriller that dives deep into the mind and what our mind is capable of -- you will love this book! And more than anything, enjoy Lisa's writing. I read every word she writes and am in awe of how she puts chapters together.
I love Lisa Unger and this novel did not disappoint!
Jack, Poppy's hubby, was murdered one year ago during his morning run in the park. After his funeral, Poppy disappeared. Her family became very worried when Poppy appeared wearing a red dress seemingly confused and with no memory as to where she was during those missing three days. Poppy was then hospitalized with a nervous breakdown. But she can't seem to let go of who killed her hubby and she is determined to figure it out.
What a great, dark, and twisty read!
This is a psychological thriller that makes you really think and place yourself in the characters shoes. The story starts out confusing, but soon you realize why.
Upon the 1 year anniversary of her husbands death, Poppy is trying to figure out the mystery around his death. Poppy has issues with mind fog, losing time and not being able to remember what's happening around her. Who can she trust and what is real? Big questions that keep you glued to the pages. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to others, especially if you've read the books set in The Hallows.
I am sad to say that I didn't like this book. I really enjoy reading Lisa Unger's books. She's an author I always look forward to picking up. However Under My Skin fell flat. I found myself being bored most of the time. Sadly, the story just go on. Once finding out what actually happened I was just happy to be at the end of the story. I feel bad saying this but this just wasn't for me.
I actually love books like Under My Skin and felt drawn in immediately. I loved Poppy as an unreliable narrator and felt like her character was reminiscent of Girl on the Train. The beginning is especially confusing but I found it interesting how the author kept the reader on edge. The end was truly a wild ride and I couldn't put the book down for the last quarter. It could've been a bit shorter since there are some repetitive sections, but I'd rate 4.5 out of 5 stars.
Great read! Looking forward to reading more from this author! I highly recommend this book and author to all!
I was provided a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest and fair review.
I didn't end up loving this one, though I did enjoy pieces of it. I had trouble getting into the mindset of the narrator, and the lack of definition between real events and dream sequences was tough for me. I understand that it was supposed to add to the suspense but it made it hard for me to keep track of what was happening. There were some good plot twists in the story, but overall the story line was just so sad. And for how sad it was, the ending was oddly hopeful and didn't jive with the feeling of the rest of the book for me. I enjoyed some of the book but didn't like it overly much. I would recommend it if you like thrillers and you enjoy an unreliable narrator.
This was my first Lisa Unger book. Afer reading them all I still believe this one is still my favorite. Her writing style has always clicked with me. This author is someone I suggest when people ask me who to read. Highly recommend.
Although I did get confused,I loved this book, I couldn’t put it down. The link between Poppy’s memories and Jack’s murder was written in a way that grips you and keeps you engrossed till the final page.
I have never read a Lisa Unger book before but I've heard lots of good things about her stories. I was looking forward to reading this and it did not disappoint. The plot was really dark and disturbing. A can't help but turn the page book! I was sucked in right from the start and had to know how things go for Poppy and what happened to her husband, Jack. The ending was brilliant and did not disappoint!! Great writing!
Thanks to Harlequin Trade Publishing and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book. So sorry it took me so long to write the review.
I really really wanted to love this book. I tried many times to figure out what I was reading. The premise of the story is perfect. Poppy’s husband turns up dead and they have not been able to figure out The Who, what when why and where of it all. A year later Poppy turns up disheveled and in a red party dress that she has no idea as to where she was or where the dress came from. Sounds great right? Well, the problem is that it became very hard to figure out what was imagined and what was truth. The writer did not really clue the reader in as to what we were getting ready to figure out. Parts seemed to run on and others made no sense whatsoever. I am sorry to say that this one was not my favorite. I did want to give it 2 stars as the premise and the protagonist were great ideas thought up in the writers vivid imagination.
Thank you to netgalley as well as the author/publisher for allowing me to read this book in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you Netgalley and Lisa Unger.
I unfortunately did not enjoy this novel. It did not keep me motivated to want to pick it up again.
I was confused during this story.
I usual enjoy Lisa Unger novels but unfortunately this one was not for me.
An addictive psychological thriller, Under My Skin was the first novel I’ve read by author Lisa Unger and will certainly not be the last.
This book is addictive and gets your heart pounding with its fast paced insight into the many complexities of our minds and hearts. Well crafted characters and puzzles and clues to solve, Under My Skin navigates extreme trauma and loss offering a refreshing change from the typical whodunnit murder mystery.
I'm a huge Lisa Unger fan, but this one just wasn't my favorite of her novels to date. I found myself a little confused in the first half; I had to go back to sections and double check what I had read which became tedious. It's quite possible I'm over the psychological thrillers that have a dream sequence plot, and that's on me. Not a bad read, but left me feeling underwhelmed in comparison to all the other novels by Unger that I've read.
Thank you so much for the opportunity to review this book and to be an early reader via NetGalley! However, I will not be writing a review for this title at this time, as my reading preferences have since changed somewhat. In the event that I decide to review the book in the future, I will make sure to purchase a copy for myself or borrow it from a library. Once again, thank you so much for providing me with early access to this title. I truly appreciate it. Please feel free to contact me with any follow-up questions or concerns.
I was confused throughout the book but I believe that was the author's intention. Did this happen or is the protagonist in a dream state? I read it to the end but never felt on firm ground while reading it.
Traveling With T’s Thoughts:
I LOVED the summary of the book. Thought it was exactly what I wanted and needed in books.
BUT….
This book is just not as good the summary makes it sound.
I was kinda intrigued by the main character blacking out- not knowing it it was memories, etc she was seeing.
But after reading and reading and reading and that happening multiple times- it became hard for me to tell what was real or imagined. And that can tire me out.
What I liked:
The cover.
The premise of the book. I was very intrigued by it!
When Poppy begins to figure things out.
Bottom line: It’s not a bad book- it’s got some good parts to it- but I felt that the really good parts came almost too late in the book.
*This book was sent to Traveling With T for review consideration. All thoughts and opinions are mine alone.*
Pin for Later:
This was my first read by this author and I was looking forward to it as she comes highly recommended. I enjoyed this book-it was a quick read because I was interested to figure out all the twists and turns but I did feel like I had to go back and make sure I wasn't missing things. It was well written and is perfect for folks who enjoy psychological thrillers. I felt like I've read similar books but this did hold my attention and was enjoyable enough for me to want to read her other books.
At first, I didn't think this book wasn't for me and I put it down. But since I've always liked Lisa Unger's books, I figured I would give it another chance. I'm glad I did. The usual twists and turns that Lisa is good at. Good characters, good plot. Loved it.
Thanks Netgalley for this arc.
I have been a huge fan of Lisa Unger for YEARS! Give me a psychological thriller with a relatable character, and I am a happy camper!
Unfortunately, this one didn't do it for me.
For the majority of the book, I found myself confused. I was switching back and forth, checking dates and trying to organize the plot in my head. I felt like a detective myself putting a red string on a board trying to connect my theories. Is this okay? Sure. Sometimes I really like to be challenged while I read, but, honestly, sometimes I just want to escape and don't want to have to piece things together.
Sometimes I want a straight forward thrill.
Did this put me off of Lisa Unger? Absolutely not. Her talent is clearly apparent and this woman can WEAVE a story. I will absolutely read more by her, but, this one wasn't for me.
Another winner by Lisa Unger. Great plot. Interesting characters. Always looking forward to her next book.
