I was given advanced readers copy in exchange for an honest review.

I usually like Lisa Unger’s books, but this one not so much. It involved dream sequences and an underground club named after “Morphius” from The Matrix. Yeah. So not my thing. But you might like it.

Under My Skin is a very suspenseful and interesting novel that explores so many topics. The author successfully touches upon subjects such as mental illness , grief , secrets, abuse , dysfunctional relationships and murder. The reader is kept searching for answers and the author has cleverly written the novel in such a way that you cannot really figure out the mystery until the very end. The only complaint I would have about this novel, and it is a minor complaint, is that the novel seemed to drag a bit in the middle but the ending more than makes up for this!

3.5/5 This was a good psychological thriller, but not one of my favorites. For me, there were too many sections of the book that the author would then turn around and say, haha, none of that was really happening; it was all just a dream. I understand having realistic dreams, but having a existence where you're never sure when you're awake and when you're dreaming sounds a bit much to me.

Thank you to NetGalley and the book publisher for a free copy in exchange for this unbiased review. This is the first book by Lisa Unger I have read and I thought it was pretty good. The pace was great and I think it would be easy to create a helpless, weak main character in the midst of all that trauma, but I liked Poppy and her life and wanted her to find her way. I thought Unger did a good job of casting doubt on all of the characters in subtle ways. Though several people have criticized the ambiguity about what was real and what was a dream, I thought it added to the story and helped create an overall hazy and mysterious effect to the plot.

Full review on Goodreads. I liked the characters and the mystery and the suspense. I did not love the ending. Overall, the book kept me sucked in for 95% of it, so I would call this one a fun beach read.

Simply fantastic!! I've read Lisa Unger before and she never disappoints!

This is a fast-paced novel about a grieving widow and the lengths she will go to discover what happened to her husband. The characters fully developed and I definitely felt a strong connection to their struggles. The ending came as a complete surprise! Which I think is the highest praise you can give a thriller/mystery.

I highly recommend this novel!

Thanks to NetGalley for the advanced reader's copy.

With so many twists and turns this book keeps you on the edge of the seat. A psychological thriller at its very best

4.5-5 stars. This is one of those books that really keeps your mind going, don't try reading before bedtime, because it needs actual brain power to keep up. I was always wondering what was really going on and what was going to be found out. A very intense, thrilling, but absolutely must need focus read! Will highly be recommending in Chapter Chatter Pub, and using in daily challenges. One I would recommend to those who love books that are full of puzzles and wondering the entire time what exactly is going on with the characters!

.me from falling into a restful sleep as if the horrific imaginings were part of my world. Poppy's husband is murdered as he was running in Central Park, and she succumbs to a nervous breakdown as her world is turned upside down. Her best friend Layla tries to protect her as she desperately tries to figure out who was responsible for the killing. However, things are never as they seem. The question begs us to answer ,"Do we really know a person? What really lies beneath the exterior and the world presented to the public? Through dream sequencing and flashbacks, Poppy begins to climb out of her fog and deduce the truth. Some of the book could use serious editing. I found exact sentences repeated several times. Furthermore, it is with an air of disbelief that I read of the NY detective being at Poppy's beck and call, as if he had no other case in the world. This strained the strength of the novel but for a fast tense read, this is the answer.

Under My Skin was an interesting read, though I found the plot convoluted in making its multiple twists, a few too many perhaps. Easy and enjoyable reading, nevertheless, for psychological suspense readers.

Under my Skin is a mystery with a big twist at the end. Poppy loses her husband and her mind all in a matter of days. A year after her husband was murdered the fog she has been living in starts to lift and memories start coming back to her. This is something that could happen to any of us.

I really wanted to like this book. Our heroine Poppy is struggling through the nightmare of her husband's violent death. The book goes back and forth between her reality and a drug induced state of nightmares. The dream sequences soon become a bore. The second part of the book picks up, but the ending does not make any sense. Feels like a cop out.

This is a great book, and it happens to be the first I've read by this particular author.
The book follows Poppy, a woman who just lost her husband to a senseless death, and her fight to come back to her own skin.
She is initially so saddened and grief stricken that she begins to become addicted to pills of all kinds, and to taking them in combination with alcohol. She looses herself all the time and can't seem to focus and get her mind right. The book follows her through all of the addiction, and then the recovery, until she is finally back under her skin. Then she can focus on finding out what really happened to her husband.
There are quite a lot of twists and turns in this one, but overall I really enjoyed it. This book was sent to me by Netgalley for my honest review.

After Poppy's husband is brutally murdered, Poppy experiences several days of "lost time". She has no memory of where she was or what she did, and even her best friends ,whose lobby she reappeared in, can't tell her where she was. As her memory begins to return through a series of hypnogogic events, she starts to piece together those missing days and memories. While the suspense was maintained throughout, it seemed to take forever for the author to reveal more information or a piece of the solution. It seemed like once the hallucinations are explained to Poppy, she should have been able to realize when she was dreaming/hallucinating and when she was not, but she continues to question everything she believes she knows. It doesn't help that she combines sleeping pills and alcohol, which most likely extended her dream state. Having said that, the who, what, when, where and why of the story, when they are finally revealed, was worth the wait.

Twists and turns, heartbreak and betrayal, friend or foe. How do you know what’s real when you can’t even trust yourself?

This story felt like a scary movie - if you blink you’ll miss something. I tore through these pages, desperate for answers. All the while crossing my fingers that the truth wouldn’t hurt worse than the assumptions I was making.
My mind was changed about a dozen times while reading this book. I thought I had all the answers. Then I got to the end of the book and realized I had no clue. None at all.

Loved this story and how the author dragged me, kicking and screaming, to the conclusion. The way everything unfolded, I made it to the end and got annoyed that I didn’t put the right pieces of the puzzle together.

“Under My Skin” by Lisa Unger was a book I could not put down. The twists and turns left me exhausted. Poppy, whose husband was killed while out jogging, has lost key parts of her memory which would help her come to piece with her husband’s killing. With the help of friends, or are they?, she trys to piece together that fatal night and the time leading up to it. Throughout this story I really began to wonder who is and who isn’t supporting Poppy in her quest for justice.

Poppy Lang is having a difficult time healing both physically and emotionally after her husband, Jack, was murdered. There is guilt that she was ill that morning when Jack left for his run. He let her sleep in…she should have been with him. He was found beaten to death in Manhattan’s Riverside Park and his case is still unsolved. Who would have wanted to kill Jack? Everyone loved Jack…at least she thought so, but obviously Jack was involved in something that she was unaware of. With no resolution to Jack’s murder, Poppy is having nightmares and blackouts. Even though Poppy is under the care of a therapist she is beginning to abuse sleeping pills and alcohol trying to make it through the night. Are the nightmares just nightmares or memories that she doesn’t yet remember? I was a little lost at first as Poppy thought she was seeing and communicating with her dead husband. As I read further it was apparent that this was how she was dealing with her grief. A psychological thriller that made me concentrate more on the plot line and characters, but well worth the read especially as Ms. Unger brings the book to such a satisfying conclusion. I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to give an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)

There is such creative writing in this book. The words just flow so naturally. The angst is so heart wrenching at times. The mystery and suspense kept me guessing all through the book. Our minds sometimes block what we can’t mentally handle. This story is a labyrinth of what’s real and what’s a dream. I absolutely adored this story and highly recommend it. As a Lisa Unger fan, I was very excited about the release of "Under My Skin". The main character Poppy is still reeling after losing her husband, Jack, who was brutally murdered during a morning run through Manhattan’s Riverside Park. Poppy, in her grief, disappeared for several days and turned up three days later wearing a red dress she didn’t recognize. Poppy is trying to figure out what happened during those days and who murdered her husband. Poppy, because of the pills and alcohol, starts having blackouts and weird dreams and she cannot tell the difference between reality and her imagination. Poppy believes that someone is following her and her friends try to help but are they really her friends? Under My Skin is a wonderful, suspenseful read!
