I have read some of the authors previous books and enjoyed this one as well. A bit predictable but still got to the finish line feeling satisfied. It was good, but not great.
Although the book is fast read, i found myself skipping over so much. Jessie finds she has no social security number after Eden, her mother dies from cancer. The skipping back and forth between time lines and narrators Jessie and Eden left me very confused. And added to the fact that I did not appreciate the ending this book was not one of Mary Kubica's best in my opinion.
What a story! Just when you think you have everything figured out, and everything will fall neatly into place, BAM! I was pleasantly surprised by the twist (as I’ve been in the habit of guessing endings lately), but I don’t know that everyone will love this twist. You’ll just have to read it and find out! The story is told from alternating characters and timelines, which help add to the unique ending.
Thank you to NetGalley for an advanced copy.
When I see a Mary Kubica book I immediately read it. I have enjoyed everything she has written and When The Lights Go Out is no exception! What a great story. I was hooked from the first page till the very end. An ending I didn’t see coming!
Jessie Sloan is mourning her mother when she finds out she may not be who she thinks she is. She has no social security number and no birth certificate? Is it possible her perfect mom kidnapped her ?
Written in Jessie and her moms point of view, this was an another amazing read!
I read When the Lights Go Out by Mary Kubica with very high expectations for a great novel. I found Ms. Kubica’s writing to be very descriptive and creative . I felt as if I knew exactly who these characters were. At the beginning of the novel there was an excellent story line presented and I excitedly read on. In the middle of the novel I thought that it became very stagnant and confusing . I thought that after a while this confusion would be resolved but that did not happen ... The novel ended and I still had many questions about the characters . Ms Kubica’s excellent writing made me wish for a more complete ending .
Twisty turns of deliciousness! I was sucked right in for the ride, and loved it! Because I read so much, not often surprised, so I am delighted to say, this author "Got Me"! Great story, loved it.
I really enjoyed When the Lights Go Out by Mary Kubica. What a wild ride!! The intensity kept up all the way through. I love this author!!! The only downside was I felt the ending was a bit rushed.
A big thank you to NetGalley and Harlequin for the ARC.
The unravelling of a young woman after losing her mother to cancer. She doesn't know her father, raised only by her mother. Now she doesn't seem to be able to go on.
3.5 stars. I’ve read all of Mary Kubica’s books and I have to say this was not one of my favorites. It was just full of agony and weird. I had little sympathy for Jessie or her mother even though they were both a wreck and needing psychological help. Still, it was a readable story, but then, the ending! Just wrong!! It’s as though the author didn’t know how to finish the story and just threw in a crazy twist to get it done with. Ms Kubica, I know you are better than that and I’m still looking forward to your next book!
Great Book!!! What can you say, Mary Kubica has another best seller. She is an awesome author and one of my favorites. This one is good, oh so good.
Nothing is as it seems, that is about the only thing I’m going to say because I don’t want to give out any spoilers, read it, and you won’t be disappointed. Wow, did she knock this one out of the ballpark, did not see the ending coming at all. It’s a quick read because you want to find out what’s coming next, she has that way of creating the ultimate creepy. I highly recommend!!
I was so excited to have the opportunity to receive this book from Harlequin – Hanover Square Press Park Row through NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. This one gets a HIGH 5****s.
I received an arc copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest opinion of it. I normally love books by this author and I was so very disappointed. It starts out with a young woman watching her mother die of cancer. She really tries to go on with her life and sells their home, gets an apartment and applies for college. She finds out from the college that her social security number belongs to a deceased person. Not going to give spoilers but this author can do so much better and too many people in different time periods did not do it for me. Very disappointed.
While I have read this author previously, I am sorry to say I could not get very far into this book. It starts out with the main character's mother in the hospital dying of cancer. This was just too close to home for me, as I only recently went through a similar experience with my late husband. I had to put the book down, through no fault of the author's.
I may be able to pick it back up sometime in the future, but not quite yet.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free, electronic ARC of this novel.
When Jessie Sloane’s mother dies, she is suddenly thrust into adulthood. When she tries to apply for college funding, her application is denied, stating that there are problems with her identity. She attempts to apply for identification and here too, she is greeted with red flags. As she continues to research her background, she finds out about a little girl named Jessie Sloane, who died three years before Jessie, and shared the same birthdate. Now Jessie has more questions than answers- what was her mother keeping secret? Why is she unable to get identification or prove who she is? Was her identity stolen or did she, inadvertently, steal someone else’s identification? What other secrets was her mother hiding?
“When the Lights Go Out” by Mary Kubica is a gripping, suspenseful tale of grief, loss, and finding out who you are (literally, in this case).
Kubica is one of my favourites, hands down. I thoroughly enjoy and devour anything she puts to paper. Each novel of Kubica’s is better than the last, wrought with twists, turns and constant suspense. “Lights” is no different.
This novel is told from the current perspective of Jessie, and from the past perspectives of Eden (Jessie’s mother), allowing a reader to develop a quick relationship with both women. Both characters are well-developed, as is Kubica’s way, and the story is creative and highly addictive. I read through the entire novel in two days, which is not unusual for me and Kubica stories.
“Lights” definitely had a twist, and it was most definitely unpredictable and unexpected. The jury is still out on how I feel about the twist though- I think I would’ve liked the novel better if it continued along the way it was going. I was a little taken aback by the twist, as it seemed highly improbably and completely dramatic and (without spoilers), a few questions were left unanswered.
That being said, I cannot give Kubica any less than five stars. I keep waiting for a subpar novel from Kubica (as happens with many of the greats) but it never comes. Ms. Kubica is a creative storyteller, hands down, and she continues to power out one suspense-fueled novel after another. I can never read her books fast enough, and there is always too long of a wait until her next novel comes out. Hands down, one of the best.
Super special thanks to Netgalley & Harlequin for the ARC of one of my favorite author’s newest books. Kubica definitely does not disappoint, though this one was arguably less of a thriller and more of a punch in the gut, instead. For me, anyway. I told a friend not too long ago that sometimes I feared becoming like the narrators who struggled with infertility and eventually went insane and lost all sense of self. It is entirely relatable, understandable, and very tangible, as scary as that may be. Every heart wrenching passage from Eden simultaneously felt like a warning and a page from my own mental thoughts. And to switch it up, the manic state in which Jessie’s entire 11 days of narration were exhausting even to me. Kubica made insomnia and manic sleep deprivation something real, and it was an absolute nightmare. There was nothing really twisty or turney about this thriller, nothing that kept you on the edge of your seat except for the absolute manic direction of the narrators day to day, but it was still good nonetheless. Kubica has a poetic way of writing, like a crisp apple, that makes even a mediocre plot line absolutely worth it.
wow! Such a great book.. couldn't put this one down. Started today and finished today.
Another great book from this author
Having read several of Mary Kubica's books in the past and enjoying them, I was excited when I was given the opportunity to read an advanced copy. Thanks Netgalley and Harlequin.
I just finished about 20 minutes ago and I'm still sitting here wondering what the heck did I just read?!? I'm trying to process it all but I fell cheated and disappointed.
In the beginning of the book, I thought, "This is going to be good!" The story had the suspense I wanted and I kept flipping the pages. When the ending of the book was approaching, things went down hill fast for me. Of all the possible senerio's that could have happened, I was severely disappointed to read that IT WAS ALL A DREAM?! Really?! After all that we just read, I was just so confused. What happened?! And to top it all off, Jessica didn't get any closure even after she woke up from her "Nap".
I really hate leaving bad reviews and normally I wouldn't but since its what I signed up for in getting an arc, I have to do it.
Sorry, Mrs. Kubica! I enjoyed many of your other books but this one is a miss for me.
Mary Kubica’s When the Lights Go Out is a heart pounding, breath holding, fast paced, edge of your seat thriller that will leave you guessing until the very last page.
I am a thriller lover. I will devour anything that can get my blood pumping but I find that I have read so many great thrillers that I have a hard time being surprised anymore. A good book can be ruined so easily by becoming overly complicated and easily predicted. About half way through this book, I was wholly expecting to be disappointed in this way. So happy this was not the case! Not only was this book not over done but it’s written so well that just as soon as you have it all figured out and are ready to throw it in the *meh* bin…BOOM….Mind. Freaking. Blown!
Not only was I not able to guess what was coming but the characters were written in a way that I was really able to connect with them and that takes a great bit of writing, as far as I’m concerned. Connecting with characters has always been hit or miss with me but I was right there with Eden and Jessie for the full ride. Feeling what they felt and being able to think what they were thinking (even though I was WAY off sometimes) made this book just that much more enjoyable to read.
This would have been a 5 Star read for me were it not for the ending. So many mixed feelings there that I don’t even know where to begin and I don’t want to give anything away, because this is a must-read book, so I’m just going to say that while I did not see that coming at all….it was a little on the anticlimactic side and I was definitely expecting more there.
All in all, this book blew me away and I would highly recommend picking it up. Free yourself up an afternoon with some wine and munchies, though, because this is a one-sitting read.
I would also like to thank NetGalley and Harlequin for providing a copy of this book.
As a big fan of Mary Kubica, I had been eagerly anticipating the release of her newest fare. Perhaps my expectations were too high? That must be the case, which is why I'm even giving this three stars; I've got to give Kubica the benefit of the doubt. After all, the majority of my reviews of psychological thrillers by other authors involve some comparison-- and failure to live up-- to Kubica.
When the Lights Go Out is not merely underwhelming, it's a mess. The timeline is confusing, the characters are neither likable nor clever, and the "twist" is atrocious. It's the kind of thing they tell you in your first Creative Writing class NEVER to do, unless you're a genius. Clearly, the author thought she could pull one over on us, that her experience and skill with the genre would allow her to break rules, or transcend them. And don't get me wrong, I'm all for breaking the "rules" of writing, of using cliches cleverly so as to deconstruct or invert convention. Furthermore, I'd have fully expected an expert in the field like Kubica, to be able to do this masterfully. It makes me wonder if this was ghostwritten, though it could just as easily be a case of asking an author to produce material too quickly, churning out mainstream thrillers for the sake of making a quick buck. I'll still read anything by her, but this was definitely a disappointment.
I thoroughly enjoy Kubica's books for the most part. This novel had me on the brink of insanity and I felt like I needed to go to sleep to make up for the narrator's lack of. I think the double surprise ending also had me shaking my fist a little. I think this novel brings about the unexpected and will keep any reader on their toes.
I love Mary Kubica so I was really excited to receive an ARC of her newest book! Thank you!
This was a very interesting read. I just finished it and I'm very conflicted. I loved reading the dual POV - Jessie in the current time and Eden in the past. Jessie sort of spun into some craziness and became an unreliable narrator. Eden's past story was rolling up to the current timeline but was taking you on some twists and turns along the way. The first 85% of the book was good-interesting, but then the ending happened. I just don't like when stories do this. SPOILER ALERT - I felt "duped" that I read almost an entire book just to find out it was all a dream. Everything that happened... It's just disappointing.
