The High Tide Club by MaryKay Andrews is a good read. It goes back and forth a lot between the last and present moments. This switching sort of lost me on what was happening. I felt bad for the characters. I didn't enjoy this book as much as I had hoped. Usually, I love the characters that I meet. Here, I felt sorry for them but didn't really care that much. The thing she that happened in the past shouldn't happen to any young girls. But it did. The story was sad, intense, and heartbreaking. Themes of friendship, loyalty, and consequences are found inside this book. A group of girls keep a secret and it costs them in the process. Now, years later, most of them are dead but their children live on...it's up to the last remaining friend to set things right. Secrets come out and so do the tears.
Oh, how I loved this book! The story flowed beautifully, there were several surprises, the characters were colorful and interesting and I just wanted to be there! Josephine is 99, an eccentric millionairess who lives in a mansion on Talisa Island. She hires Brooke to find her four friends who formed the HIgh Tide Club. The club was so named as the girls would skinny-dip once a month on the island. Josephine wishes to bequeath her wealth and estate to them and wants to make amends for past betrayals. She has not seen these friends for some time. Brooke is a lawyer and a single mother with her own issues. The story was captivating!
Brooke is summoned to Talisa Island by Josephine Bettendorf, the elderly heiress whose family owns most of the island. All Josephine will say is that she needs help with a legal matter, and while Brooke is a lawyer, she knows that the Bettendorfs are clients of a large, much more prestigious law firm. She tells Brooke a story of old friendships, secrets and more, and asks Brooke to help protect her legacy from those who want her land and to make amends to the families of her long-ago best friends.
Mary Kay Andrews is one of my favorite authors, and it doesn't seem like summer is right around the corner without a new southern adventure to enjoy, and this book lived up to my expectations. At first, it was a little hard to follow the timeline, bouncing back and forth between the past and the present day, until I remembered to pay attention to the dates at the beginning of the chapters :) I would love to visit, to enjoy the peace and quiet of Talisa Island, and Miss Josephine sounds like someone I'd love to spend time with. The stories she must have to tell, other than those included in this book, would probably entertain a receptive audience for hours on end. I look forward to reading more fun, summer books by this author.
The High Tide Club by Mary Kay Andrews another winner in a long line of totally enjoyable reads. I enjoyed all the characters, their personalities shined through. I enjoyed Varinas take on life. It brings to mind how our thoughts and ideas change the older we get. The settings of Savannah, St. Anne, and Talisa Island were perfect. The only reference missing was my favorite, pluff mud. The book also makes us see the difference in the time we now live and what it was like to live in the 40's. I have no doubt The High Tide Club will be on everyones spring reading list. Thank you to the Net Galley team at St. Martins Press.
Excellent for summer reading. Ther is enough humor, drama and shady characters that made this book a page turner. Ancestors of a group of woman meet the wealthy one who is ill and wants to make amends before her death. Lots of twists.....
Fascinating, complex tale weaving past to present, intertwining female generations of four families through triumphs and tragedies that explore multiple issues in-depth in a page-turning way using a range of heart-gripping emotions.
A perfect combination of depth of characters, laughter, sadness and a wonderful writing style that had me wanting more! Chock full of facts, love and relationships that transcend generations this was a most enjoying and hard to put down read that was engrossing from the first page. I just loved the book and thank you for the opportunity to have read this title prior to publication.
The High Tide Club is a story by Mary Kay Andrews. Ms Andrews has created characters the reader immediately becomes immersed in, feeling they are friends. The tale is so engrossing the pages fly by making it a fast read. Twists and turns gives the reader surprises. I was given an early copy to review.
The High Tide Club is full of secrets and twists as well as fun. I enjoyed reading Josephine's story through her closest friends and being able to see their families come to know each other and piece together the story of their loved ones. This was a great read!
This book was a lot of fun. It was full of twist and turns. Some of them I saw coming but most I did not. I love when a book can surprise me. The characters in this book were rich and colorful. I can honestly say that I enjoyed bits and pieces of all of them. It was fun to watch the next generation of the High Tide Club come together. Some unexpected friendships were formed but I find sometimes those make the best friendships.
I enjoyed reading the back and forth of time. Seeing Ruth, Josephine, and Millie as teenagers and how close they were was a very important part of this story. I loved Brooke and her mom, Marie. Farrah was a delight. Felicia and Varina have such a special bond. There are so many wonderful things about this book. I highly recommend it!!!
I received an ARC from NetGalley and St. Martin's Press.
I look so forward to the new Mary Kay Andrews book each summer, and this was not a disappointment.
The book wove a story back and forth between the 1940s and modern day, and presented diverse characters that were more than just archetypes.
I really enjoyed the main character, an elderly, wealthy island owner was such a well drawn character. Her choices were unexpected, but created a character that was fully fleshed out.
The book mostly follows single mother and lawyer Brooke Trappnell in her quest to find the heirs and make amends for Georgia Island owner and heiress Josephine Warrick. While seeming a simple plot, the book instantly drew me in with a decades old mystery and lush descriptions of the island and its inhabitants.
While I have enjoyed a few of Ms. Andrews books better, this one certainly is a perfect summer read.
Mary Key Andrews is a superb story teller.
She has written a story which starts in 1941 and last to present day, and during the whole book she goes back and forth descibing the friendship between four girls in the South. It is a story of heartbreak, hate, redemption, forgivness, missed chances, happiness but above all else it is about love.
Even though it is not a mystery or a suspense novel it is full of twists and turns and moments so intense you can't wait to see what is going to happen. The more I read the more captivated I became, I literally couldn't put the book down.
She has portrayed characters so well you have a feeling that you know them. I could imagine the heat of summer in the South, I could smell the salt in the air and hear the waves crashing.
This book teaches us an important lesson about how we should treat the people we love and lenghts we will go to to protect the ones we love.
For all who enjoy beautiful stories about that will make you laugh and cry this is the perfect choice.
Old secrets and lasting friendships collide in this wonderful novel. And what could be better than an island backdrop.
This might be my favorite Mary Kay Andrews and I've read all of her books. Other than a few instances of black characters as the help and very minor characters, her books are typically very white. I was happy to see the character of Varina, but was initially hesitant because I wasn't sure if she'd be relegated to a secondary character. And though she wasn't, I was still wary because I thought she was going to be a go along to get along character. She was a bit, but her role of complacency was countered by her neice.
I loved the story line, present day and the flashbacks. I figured out early on the big mystery, but was still shocked by other turns of event. I adored the new friendships made, but there were still a few loose ends that weren't tied up as it related to the original friends and why they lost contact. I'm not sure if that was an oversight or if Andrews decided it wasn't important to the overall story line.
This was a good book but not as good as her previous books. The characters didn't feel real. I felt it was a different author. Just not my favorite book by this author.
I really enjoyed this new read by MKA; a little different from most of her books. Great description of the island and life there, interesting characters with good story lines, a few twists that keep you guessing. Will make a great beach read this summer.
I love all that Mary Kay Andrews writes, and this book was no exception. She really makes you feel like you’re in Georgia, you can relate to her characters, and you are immediately right there in the story. I would definitely recommend this book. My only quibble is the ending with Brooke and Pete felt rushed, would have liked a little more about that. Other than that, a great story!
I really tried, but the dialect drove me nuts. Improper ways of speaking just make me want to scream,.
Sure, this takes place in GA, so references to southern living are fine, but it seemed to denigrate the descendants of former slaves in a way that I didn't like so I refused to continue reading.
Another great book from Mary Kay Andrews. A mystery involving the low country, strong female characters and a look into Southern history. Great read!
History can have an effect on the present, and in this story of the High Tide Club, we learn that very well. Josephine wants to make amends, but her time is running out. She reaches out to Brooke, who is closer to this amazing story than she might have imagined. The book takes us back and forth from the past to the present, as we learn about the secrets kept and the impact they had on four young girls decades ago, and the current impact on those they loved. A little mystery, some humor, and just a bit of drama and romance keep you moving through this wonderfully written tale of love and friendship.
