First, I absolutely love the illustrations in this book! They're beautiful and brightly colored, and seamlessly work with the font & text colors.
Second, this entire series is just a lot of fun. It explores the lore of whichever mythical character is featured with depth, in a way that kids understand and respond well to. My kids (3 & 8) and I read this book while learning about mermaids and other ocean creatures for a loose unit study (we homeschool). The only thing that made me less than happy with this was the fact that sharks are made out to be scary, which perpetuates that idea. I try hard to help my kids understand that animals in nature are typically NOT scary, so long as you respect them. BUT this isn't meant to be taken super seriously, and it prompted more discussion on that topic, so I won't really hold it against the book. :)
I received this book as a preview and had a hard time following the text due to a faulty download. From what I could read it was a fun tale. There were a few stanzas that did not seem to flow as well but the text is clever and easy enough for younger grade students to read independently. The art work in this book is wonderful - beautiful colors and images really enhance the story.
5 stars to this magical little story of how to catch a mermaid, because really, who doesn't want to catch a mermaid???
Fun with rhyming words and vivid illustrations. I really enjoyed this and so did the young kids I shared it with. Every home with young ones needs a copy of this. Sure to be popular and asked to be read often!
"Last week I saw a mermaid.
It's not something I'd pretend!
I'd really like to catch her
so she could be my friend. "
I want a mermaid for a friend too!
Many thanks to the publisher via NetGalley, and Adam Wallace for a digital ARC to read for review. Highly recommended!

Great artwork and cute rhythms. Good pick for any mermaid loving child.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of this book, which I voluntarily chose to review.

This was a super cute book about a couple little kids who decide they want to try to catch a mermaid. They do everything they can, using shiny and sparkly objects, but the mermaid is just too fast for them!
The format of this book was super weird on my kindle, so it was kind of hard to read. But the artwork is beautiful and colorful and the words rhyme, which is always fun.
I wish it was just a bit longer too, but I almost feel like some of the pages are missing from this version, because it kind of just jumps into the book.
I am such a huge fan of this series! How to Catch a Mermaid is another fantastic addition to this series. Adam is a gifted writer and I enjoyed reading this book very much.
I received a free ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this book. The pictures were very colorful and eye catching. The text was rhyming and creative. I think this is great for older kids 4-8
A cute story from a child's perspective detailing their different attempts to catch a Mermaid. The illustrations/colour scheme of this book are perfect and beatiful, and the story itself flows nicely (I am always a fan of rhyming). This book taps into the imagination of a child given the subject nature, and the story kept my daughter's interest. It's a hit in my books!
How To Catch A Mermaid has some positives, such as the idea of the story, rhyming, kids thinking things through. However, overall it did not draw me in enough.
A very cute little book with an important message to learn. Would recommend to anyone thinking of trying this out. Will be reading others by this author.
A story told in rhyming verse about two kids who go on an adventure in an attempt to catch a mermaid. The illustrations are very cute and use vivid, beautiful colors. While the verse is simple and fun, there were several places where it flowed very awkwardly. Overall, a fun, humorous story.
This cute rhyming story has a decent plot arc, but sometimes the rhyme would take me out of the story a little. The best thing about his book, though, is the art! The colors are so bright and fun and the illustrations are just wonderful. Perfect for little readers who dream of mermaids and undersea adventures.
The illustrations in this book are gorgeous. They're so crisp and colorful, they make the book a joy to read.
The story is told in a ABCB rhyming pattern, with a "verse" on each two page spread. A problem a see a lot with books that try to tell a story in verse is with an awkward flow, but the rhythm of the verses in this story is wonderful and fun to read.
The story is fun, about two kids (and a dog) trying to catch a mermaid, but then they run into some trouble with some sharks and the mermaid ends up saving them. It's a cute, fun read and just happens to be an excellent length for a bedtime story.
The world needs more mermaid and unicorn books. I get asked for them often at the library! “How to Catch a Mermaid” is a fun one that will be popular with children and is an excellent read aloud.
This delightful children's book is written in rhyme with adorable and vivid illustrations to help the early reader use picture cues. This is a story of two clever kids and a dog trying their best to catch an equally clever and fast mermaid. The mermaid keeps escaping the traps set to lure her while collecting treasure along the way. When the friends find themselves in danger, the mermaid shows up to save the day! Unfortunately, she does not stick around, but quickly dives in and swims away. A fun adventure to share with young children and for young readers to practice their skills. A nice addition to a family, classroom, school or public library.
Beautiful illustrations enhance this rhyming book that would be a great gift for early readers. As a speech language pathologist, I adore rhyming books to enhance literacy and this one doesn't disappoint. Kids like mermaids and sea creatures, and I'm certain they will enjoy this book by Adam Wallace.
Thank you to #NetGalley and the publisher for a pre-publication ebook in exchange for an honest review.
Two friends and a dog try to catch a mermaid, but their best-planned traps aren't enough to catch the elusive creature.
With simple rhyming text and bright, colorful illustrations, this is a great summertime picture book. The illustrations are as vivid as the narrator's imagination. This book is really adorable and lots of fun.
I read an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
The first thing I noticed about this book was the cover; the colours - OMG! It definitely appealed to me and when my daughter sets eyes on this book I'll likely only have bedtime reading privileges as she is quite keen on them at the moment. So if you are looking for a book with bright, colourful illustrations - then this is a good start.
But what about the story? Well, I found it most enjoyable. Watching the kids come up with a plan to catch the mermaid only for her to get around it each time. I liked this because of the problem solving aspect - it shows children that things don't always work the first time or as planned - so from a persistence angle this one ticks the box. I also think that this story could lead into some very fun and engaging STEAM activities - I can just imagine a classroom full of kids devising a trap to catch a mermaid.
Overall, this is a very fun and engaging book that would appeal to anyone from about 3.5 years and upwards.
Thank you to Netgalley, Sourcebooks Jabberwocky, and Adam Wallace for the eARC I received in exchange for an honest review.
How to Catch a Mermaid is simply adorable. The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous. I am not a big fan of rhyming but it works for this book and I think littles will love it.
The story was fine but a little too silly for my three girls. The pictures were bright and colorful.
