I can't believe it took me this long to read this book, but it was worth it. The mystery grabbed my attention from the start and the pace doesn't let up until the final page. A gripping story with engaging characters!
4.5 stars. This is the first book I have read by this author and I thoroughly enjoyed it. There were a few twists and turns that keep you on your toes and i genuinely didn’t know how it would end. Very easy to read. I look forward to reading more of this authors books.
Thank you very much to netGalley and Bookouture for the advance copy of The Visitor my review is honest and unbiased in any way.
Love KL Slater and had eagerly awaited this book and have read all of her books but The Visitor exceeded my expectations. I loved the storyline as it is something which can happen in any street and that added to the creepiness of the whole book, absolutely loved it and found when I did have to put it down It would still be on my mind but it went a totally different way to what I expected which was the icing on the cake for me! Can't recommend The Visitor highly enough!
I knew this thriller was going to be good, just by the name of the author! I have read other books from K.L. Slater and I have never been disappointed. The Visitor kept me hooked right from the beginning, with its suspense and mystery and I would definitely recommend reading it if you haven't done so already.
This book was provided to me by NetGalley in exchange for a review. Don't want to give a thing away. Read this book. Now!! SO great! You won't be able to put it down!
The Visitor by K.L. Slater is psychological thriller.
First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Bookouture, and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
My Synopsis:
Holly is trying to start a new life, and things seem to be going her way. A lonely widow named Cora invites her to stay, rent-free. She finds a job. It looks like she will be earning some good money. She has a plan. But her past seems to be around every corner, and Holly thinks someone may be following her.
Cora wants a visitor, not a tenant. She is lonely, and seems to be on the verge of dementia. She likes Holly very much, but something isn’t sitting right.
David is 40 years old and lives next door to Cora, in a house with his mother (and now her “boyfriend”). David takes “neighborhood watch” to the extreme, by spying on everyone. His past is a bit of a mess, and people consider him a little “odd”. But as long as he takes his meds, everything is fine. He is hoping to become closer friends with Holly.
Things start to fall apart, the past is revealed, and not everyone survives.
My Views:
Told from the perspectives of Holly, Cora, and David, this book is about the faces people put forth, and the secrets hidden beneath them. It also explores how a troubled past can influence your present-day actions.
This book is a really easy read, and although I felt like the first half dragged, it was actually paced well. I think it was because there was nothing really exciting happening initially, just groundwork being laid, and I got a bit bored. Slater revealed the pasts of the characters slowly, perhaps a bit too slowly for me.
However, Slater writes really well, and the whole premise of the book was great. I have to say, the twists at the end were non-stop, and I loved it!
A truly terrifying tale of two twisted individuals, damaged beyond repair by their pasts and on a dangerous collision course. A gripping, clever plot with lots of unexpected twists
I must admit I was going to give this book only 2 stars but the ending is what saved this from happening. Throughout the novel you get the sense of foreboding. You have three characters of which you are getting pov's. Holly--the visitor, David--the neighbor, and Cora--the lady that takes Holly in. From Holly you know that something from her past might be catching up with her and through her flashbacks you slowly come to understand what that is. David also had something happen in his past that keeps him from leaving his house at night. Meanwhile, he obsessively watches his neighbors from his bedroom window. Once Holly and David befriend each other, you know that something will happen between them. I admit I was beginning to wonder if anything would happen. The writing was good but I was getting impatient for anything to happen! Only till about 80% or so did the story start turning and things were beginning to happen. It was then when the story became good. The last 20% were excellent! That's what made the book good--the ending. It was wonderful to see the story wrap up in a twisted way.
*Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Good book. Kept my interest throughout . Felt sorry for holly and a lot of the other characters too. How a life takes it’s twists and turns but so many horrible men except David
I am a big fan of K L Slater and this latest book didn’t disappoint. Holly is escaping from her secret past and moves back to Nottingham and meets Cora, an elderly lady, who invites her to live with her for companionship. Cora’s next door neighbour David, suffers from a disability but observes everything that happens on the street and becomes obsessed with Holly. Holly and David strike up a friendship as they are both lonely and vulnerable, but both have dark secrets to hide.
This is a compelling read and the tension builds throughout the book culminating in an ending that will leave you stunned! An excellent read and highly recommended.
Thanks to my favourite publisher Bookouture and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
This was a surprising read.
To be completely honest, I didn't like our characters very much. But despite that, I found myself riveted by them. I simply had to know what was really going on here.
And I was certainly shocked when I discovered exactly what was happening.
Note that this is more quiet suspense than thriller. Don't expect a ton of action, but the psychological suspense is there as you deal with some seriously broken individuals.
A good beach read!
Not the best thriller I have read, but by far not the worst. I think the characters needed a bit more development and reasons to like and find interest, and it would've been a much better book. I also think compared to other psychological thrillers, this book was a bit boring and lacked some of the excitement and twists that you come to expect and love in thrillers. It is one I would give a solid 3.5 stars though and a quick, easy read when looking for something.
Thanks to Netgalley for my copy.
This is a slow paced burner about secrets. Everyone has secrets of some sort, some are bigger and darker than others. Holly has returned to her hometown, broke financially and emotionally. She is taken in by a kind elderly lonely woman who has her own things to keep hidden.
David is the lonely neighbour who relies on his routine and orderly life to keep him functioning in a somewhat normal fashion.
The characters in this were well developed and there are plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader guessing. The ending was unexpected but very believable. Another good book from this author.
Had such high hopes for this book. Sadly it just wasn't for me. I found it very dull and uninteresting from the off. Reading about the oddball David. It did pick up towards the end of the book, but sadly not enough to give a better rating. Just wasn't for me this one
Sorry but I really did not like the characters in this book and that makes it hard for me to enjoy reading. The first half of the book was really slow and then I really did not like the ending either
WOW! Kim Slater you have done it again - kept me awake well after my usual bed time so that I could finish this book.
If you are looking for a well written, can't put it down psychological thriller that will hook you in from the very first page to the last then look no further. The characters are well drawn and the plot will keep you guessing until the end.
Easy 5 *****
The Visitor is the latest psychological thriller from KL Slater. Holly is a timely visitor to Cora Barrett, a lonely old lady in Holly’s hometown of Nottingham.
After the death of Cora’s husband, she has been lacking companionship. Holly’s misfortune is her gain, as she takes her in as a lodger after taking pity on her following an incident at the local post office.
Holly needs a break.
After escaping her troubled family life as a teenager and fleeing to Manchester with her friend Marcus, Holly hadn’t ever imagined she’d return to her hometown of Nottingham.
But that was before she met Geraldine and Brendan and everything changed.
David is Cora’s next door neighbour. He is intrigued by Holly’s arrival at the house and vows to get to know her better despite his own personal reservations about befriending a stranger. His Mother and those close to him don’t think he should get close to Holly but David doesn’t care.
Holly and David begin to tentatively strike up a friendship. Holly feels safe with David, but she can’t shake the feeling that someone is watching her. Someone trying to track her down from her past. Someone that she doesn’t want to see ever again.
I can’t say much more about The Visitor without giving anything away, so I’ll just this. The ending I didn’t see coming in a million years. Another brilliant K.L. Slater novel.
I read – and loved – all her earlier books, but this book just did not have it for me. Maybe I was too focussed on reading a thriller, be cause to me it was a novel with some spooky elements. But the thrilling part only came in the end and it left me with kind of an open end, which I really do not like. But I am too much of a fan to put me off her books, so I will be awaiting her next one eagerly.
I received a free e-copy of The visitor by K.L. Slater from Netgalley for my review. A psychological thriller that will keep you guessing. A young woman, Holly who lived in a town with her Aunt and his boyfriend. Holly couldn't stand to be around her Aunt's boyfriend any long and decided to leave town with her friend Markus to Manchester. She wanted nothing more than an fresh start. Holly once though life with her Aunt was rough, never fitting in at school, always being the odd one out, etc. Now she find that things are going to get a lot tougher. In Manchester she gets herself in a very bad situation that she needs to get out of. She returns back to her home town with no money and nowhere to go. A woman, Cora, takes Holly in and helps her by giving her room and food for her companionship since she has lost her husband. Holly soon finds that you can't hide from your past. Holly's past has come back to haunt her and it seems everyone has secrets. Cora has secrets, the man next door, David has secrets, Holly has secrets and others in town do as well. So many twists and turns in this book that keep you reading till the very end. Wonderfully written novel that keeps you guessing.
The Visitor by K.L.Slater is a psychological thriller that is bound to be well received. This is the fifth psychological thriller by this author, and the fourth book I have read… and her novels just get better and better. This is a fabulous read, that will reel you in …one line at a time…
Everyone has a secret in their past.
Everyone pretends to be something they’re not.
But someone is always watching… and that someone is closer than you think.
Holly Newman is a “visitor” following a bad experience in Manchester returns to her home town, Nottingham, 10 years later. She has been through something terrible and now she needs a safe haven in which to recover and build a new future. She finds a room in a quiet suburban area, in the home of Cora Barrett, a lonely old woman who is looking for company and someone to talk to.
“I’m always just a visitor in everyone’s life…I come and go, but nothing ever changes.”
David is a “little different” but a kind person who lives at home with his mother, next door to Cora, and observes everything that happens on the street. David occasionally does the odd job for Cora. He is considered “odd” by society… an outsider, non-sociable who stays at home and will not go out after dark. He works part time as a car park attendant. In his spare time, he watches and records all activity on the street through the use of hidden video cameras.
Holly and David gradually begin to strike up a friendship... both lonely and vulnerable. But Holly can’t shake the feeling that someone from her past might have tracked her down. And David is always watching…
Both Holly and David have dark secrets they would like to keep hidden.
Each short chapter is devoted to one of the above characters, to allow the reader to get to know all three characters in greater depth. They all play a part in the overall picture. The different stories all come together.
This is a fast-paced mystery that is sure to please. I did not expect the most surprising twist at the end of the book…OMG I didn’t see it coming. I was probably too engrossed in the story line. This really is an excellent read and I highly recommend it.
Many thanks to my favourite publisher, Bookouture via Netgalley for my copy.
