The Visitor by K.L Slater is another excellent novel from this author. I have read all her novels and like her others this one doesn’t disappoint.
Holly has returned to Nottingham after being years away. She left with her friend Markus to start a new life in Manchester but, now she is back after having a bad time. But, now she is homeless and penniless. She happens to bump into Cora, who feels sorry for her when is found crying and offers her a room in her house. She becomes ‘The Visitor’. Cora could do with the company, as she lives alone now as her husband has died.
At first she is happy something is going right for her for a change and she meets David. Who is an odd fellow and who is 40 years old and still lives with his parents. Who sees everything that happens on Baker crescent. She gets a job in an upmarket department store called Kennington’s and life seems to being getting better. But although things are getting better, she senses that someone is watching her. Someone is trying to get hold of her from her past. The story also tells of her life when she went to Manchester and goes to work for Brendan and Geraldine.
This is another gripping thriller from Ms Slater. It’s original and tense and I like her style of writing. You never know what you are going to get with this author and I like how she keeps you guessing right up to the end and then bang the brilliant twist at the end. You will never see it coming. Well done Ms Slater another Hit.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for a copy of this book.
I loved The Visitor I could not put it down.
Kept guessing right up to the last few pages and I was wrong, a fab book, with plenty of twists and turns.
If you want to lose several hours in your day, read this great psychological thriller you won’t be disappointed.
This book was about Holly and she stays in Mrs Barrett’s house . She caused trouble for herself when she stayed with Geraldine and Brendan and then she upsets her new neighbor called David ,Who is a bit crazy too.
I have loved all of K L Slater’s previous books and this one didn’t disappoint.
It was a little slow at first, but turned out to be a real page turner that I couldn’t put down.
Now I must admit this is the first book I have read by K.L Slater BUT… Rest assurred all her other books are waiting patiently on my kindle. What a brilliant story! I enjoyed it, I loved it.
Who did you really let into your home?
The Visitor is told through three main characters Holly, David and Cora. I found each character odd, unusual and different in their own personal way, but I especially thought David’s character was a right wierdo. Each character is hiding their own dark secrets which are not revealed until the end and trust me you will not expect any of them!
The story is written well, easy to read, fast paced and contains short chapters. I managed to finish The Visitor within 24 hours. Gripping. The ending is where it all starts to kick off!! Wow. Towards the end I did start to feel sorry for poor Holly, but I think the ending was perfect for this story. A well deserved four stars and I would highly recommend to you all.
The Visitor without doubt doesn’t disappoint. This newest title has the same high quality of writing and plot development I have become used to associating with her work. The Visitor is psychological thriller at its best! This is mostly a character-driven story and has a dual POV structure. The story switches between Holly and David as the plot develops, the present linking the two different storylines as they are slowly getting more intertwined. Holly’s past is the main focus of the intrigue and secrets and plays a big role in the many plot twists that will be revealed as you keep reading. As a reader, you are completely left in the dark about what exactly happened to Holly, although I did have some vague ideas and some of it turned out to be true. BUT. The final plot twists and reveals basically left me speechless and I don’t think anyone would have been able to guess it all. I just love with when a story manages to surprise me! That said, I can’t say I was a big fan of Holly. The character development is very well done though, and helps turn The Visitor into another success. Fans of character-driven psychological thrillers will have a blast reading this one!
3.5/5 stars rounded to 4. So I'm a big fan of this author. I have read all of her books thus far and enjoyed them all.
Holly is one of our main narrators. She returns to her hometown and is taken in by a friendly older woman named Cora. Something bad has happened to Holly but she really doesn't let us in on her secrets. She speaks of a Geraldine and Evan but we really don't know who they are or what significance they have on Holly's life.
David lives next door. David is very "different". He is a 40 year old who still lives at home with his mom and watches people from the window not leaving the house after dark. David intrigued me. Why was he so different and what happened to make him not want to go out after dark? I wanted to know more about him. He desperately seemed in need of a friend and this new visitor next door could just be perfect for him.
While I enjoyed this book, I must say the ending was a bit abrupt and ended too quickly for me. I'm still here after having finished like wait, what?! Too much to take in at one time! This may be considered a spoiler ahead so please stop reading, be forewarned. I'm not so sure how I feel about narrators who all of a sudden become completely different people than what you were lead to believe throughout the whole book!? hmmm.... (end spoiler)
I am still a big fan of K. L. Slater's and cannot wait to see what she comes up with next! A huge thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for allowing me an advanced copy of this book!! Keep them coming K. L.. Slater!
I am a huge fan of this author but this book surpassed her other works.
The book is so full of emotion and drama that I just had to finish it fast do I could find out all the details.
I was given an advantage in exchange for an honest review
. Eh- it's not awful. The pacing is very slow, the characters are a bit stock, but it's serviceable in the end. There were some twists I just did not see coming. Did the job.
Everyone has a secret in their past. Everyone pretends to be something they're not.
Holly returns to her home town after some time away - she has been through something terrible and now she needs a safe haven in which to recover. She finds a room in the quiet suburban street, in the home of Cora Barrett. David lives next door to Cora and he sees everything that happens on Baker Crescent. David stays at home and watches, he does not like to leave the house. He wants to keep his friends and neighbours safe.
Is it just me or is there a lot of books just now where there is someone who can't/won't leave their home., but like to people watch and record what they see.? Holly has left her old life behind but feels someone from her past has tracked her down. There is lots of twists in this fast paced book. The story tells us about her living and working in Nottingham and her ordeal when she was living in Manchester. This book has suspense, mystery and most important for me, we get all the loose ends tied up.
I would like to thank NetGalley, Bookouture and the K. L. Slater for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The Visitor K.L. Slater
The thing I like about novels by K.L. Slater is their subtleness. The stories are almost pedestrian but they are loaded with tension, and this one is fully loaded.
David is a slightly strange middle aged man who lives at home with his mom and her new partner. David has autistic tendencies, he hates change, he's very methodical, socially awkward, and he's a bit voyeuristic. He sees himself as a one man neighbourhood watch.
His next door neighbour is the widowed Cora. David counts her as one of, if not his only friend, so when Cora takes in a lodger David becomes worried.
Holly is the lodger. At 28 she has just moved back to her old home city of Nottingham after 10 years in Manchester. As the story moves on it is apparent that Holly moved away because she lived in a home where she felt unwanted and unsafe. But what she found in Manchester was worse, and now she's run away, but why back to Nottingham. As the story unfolds Holly's Manchester years get told in her memories.
She is paranoid somebody is watching her and that her Manchester life is hunting her down.
Holly and David develop a friendship, but who is helping who. Is one, or the other, actually more of a danger than a friend.
If you want a book that's going to keep you turning the pages, and keep you guessing right up till the end, you're going to love this book.
I have tried to find the right analogy to describe this book, but I keep going back to one that sounds negative. It's like the Chinese Water Torture, but in a good way. There is a constant drip of information, which builds up the tension. The story builds and builds without any specific key moment; but that constant drip is really building the tension in one of the best psychological thrillers I've read.
The end of this book is nothing short of stunning. The last two chapters twist the story in a direction I never saw coming, but it makes perfect sense.
What a book.

Another really good read from K L Slater , they always hook me from the beginning and the visitor was no different . Holliehas gone back to her hometown after leaving under a cloud several years earlier ,Cora and elderly lady takes pity on her and invites her to stay , we get Hollies story in flash back and I enjoyed this part of the book , she gets a job , makes a friend with David the strange middle aged man still living at home with his mum . Hollie feels like her past is catching up with her and that she is in danger and it all comes together in a satisfying climax , great story really enjoyed it , if I had the tiniest criticism the last quarter felt a little rushed , but in all would recommend .
Thanks Netgalley and Bookouture for allowing me to read this book. I'm sorry but unlike previous K. L. Slater books I just didn't enjoy this book at all! I found it hard to read to the end. It was a strange one!
I really enjoyed this book it had me captivated and kept me engaged all the way through. It is the kind of book that you read really quickly because its hard to put down as there are plenty of twists. I thought the ending was great. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Wow, this one hit it out of the park for me! I loved the varied, well-drawn cast of characters. The twists and turns just kept on coming, down to the last sentence. I highly recommend this book and am rushing off to add the rest of her books to my Kindle wish list!
This was once again a truly 'unputdownable' book for me.
This author has been one of the ones I eagerly follow all over Social Media anticipating her every new release.
I would have written my review sooner however, I've a lot taking up my time at the moment and decided to write this later, so although I say I am eager to read it, yes I did, right away, but slower at presenting my thoughts on it.
Holly.
She has lived away from her home town for a while now.
I loved reading why she left and what her life was like where she went to. I'm thinking, sometimes we make decisions that seem for the best and then years later reflect, were they they right decisions though and what did I gain from that.
The life she led.
David.
He was a fascinating character to me. If anyone knows or watches the soap Coronation Street, he reminded me of Roy the owner of the cafe. Seemingly stilted in speech, unattached to people, and devoid of emotions. Slow of speech and thought, I almost had him in a mans cardigan with a clipboard doing his job in the carpark he attends to.
Still rivers run deep.
I also thought underneath all of that he had an acute awareness of people.
Everyone knew David as "not quite right".
Cora
She lives next door to David and his Mother.
David is now 40, but Cora has known him from a young lad who did little jobs for her, and still does.
Cora took Holly into her home when she had nowhere else to go, they are not related. You will read how that evolves once you pick up this book.
David was my main character who amused me in this story, not as in 'laughing' but intrigued me, I wanted to get inside his head and see what made him tick.
Holly became quite rooted within the story too, when she started working that brought out a new side to her.
Holly and David made a connection, a sort of friendship and although I felt that David wanted more Holly was only aware of him as a 'friend'.
At every turn of the page, someone was watching.
Just who it was for sure I had no idea, but it was creepy.
I had ideas, never proven, never 100% sure.
Someone somewhere had secrets that much I did know.
I would pick up this authors books eagerly whatever I am doing.
I am a huge fan.
My thanks to Bookoutour for my copy
Oh my goodness, what an ending! I really enjoyed this book, found it so easy to read and get engrossed in. The twists at the end were great.
I’ll definitely read more from this author again.
Another brilliant story from K L Slater. I was hooked from the very first page and had no idea how it would end. Amazing twists. Best book yet from this author.
Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read The Visitor by KL SLATER. I have read all Slater's books and I am amazed how you can think one thing is going to happen and then you are turned around totally.
Cora is an older woman who lives on her own - that is until she meets a young woman, Holly, who moves in with her. Cora thinks of her not as a visitor, but as a guest. A neighbor, David, has his own secrets. He watches from his window, and he notices Holly. David lives a solitary life with his mother - he watches and waits. Everyone has their own secrets - each chapter takes you into the main character's story line.
Holly fits into Cora's life but she has a past and it haunts her - she has her goals and as the story unfolds you find out exactly what happened to Holly.
This story is told in several voices - Holly, David, and Cora - how each character perceives each situation and how they interlock is very engaging. I didn't see the end coming....wow.
Slater has a habit of hooking you and this book is no different. Very good - RECOMMEND.
"You can never know what goes on behind closed doors. Or can you?
Holly never thought she’d move back to her home town, but then something terrible happened. She doesn’t know if she can recover. But she knows she can never tell another soul.
People say her neighbour, David, is “different”. He doesn’t go out much, and never after dark. But in David Holly finds just what she needs: a friend. Someone who’s always there.
No one knows Holly’s secret, or where she lives. She has left the past behind. She is sure of it. So why does she feel as though she’s in terrible danger?"
A truly incurable thriller that keeps you guessing until the very end! I loved every twist and turn and couldn't stop reading because i was dying to know what the big secret was with Holly, David and even Geraldine ! Throughout the book they keep you guessing at to what and who everyone is exactly but the major twist at the end will keep you up late reading to find out the truth!
