Such a good read. Read in one day, you won’t want to put this down. Moving between two timescales you keep turning the pages because you are desperate to find out what happened to Holly. What happened to bring her back destitute to her native Nottingham, the place she couldn’t wait to leave?. And what of her odd neighbour David?. Harmless? Deluded? or could there be more to him too?

"Everyone has a secret in their past."
Holly has returned to her hometown after being away for several years. When she was younger she ran away with a friend in hopes of starting a new life. After years away, Holly is back, and she rents a room from a lonely widow named Cora and quickly finds a job and has hopes of building a future.
Cora is happy to have Holly living with her. She is a widow and is lonely living by herself. She is happy to have someone to talk with and look after. Cora also has David, her next-door neighbor, who occasionally does the odd job for her. He is an adult man still living with his Mother. Since David was a child, Cora has always welcomed him over and baked for him and gave him odd jobs to do.
David is quiet observer of the neighborhood and knows almost everyone's comings and goings. David presents as socially awkward and odd. He likes to follow rules and does not like when his life is disrupted by his Mother's "friend" Brian moving in. His interest is piqued when he learns that his neighbor, Cora has taken in a young woman to live with her.
When Holly begins her new job, she quickly learns that her neighbor, David works there as well. Both are lonely and don't have many people to talk with, so they strike up a friendship. As Holly goes about her days, she begins to feel as if she is being watched - just who is that shadowy figure she has been seeing in the garden? What secrets does she harbor? What secrets do the other characters in this book have?
The Visitor is a psychological thriller that does have a twist or two. Initially I was not sure how I felt about this book. It is one that I wanted to sit and think about upon finishing the book. As I was able to think about the plot, I began to appreciate the Author's ability to "reveal" secrets and drop little bombs along the way.
I found this book to be a very fast read due to the pacing and events happening in most of the characters’ lives. I enjoy when characters have secrets and watching their secrets unfold is very interesting and adds to the suspense in this novel. This is not your typical "page turner" which is why I needed to sit and think about the story-line upon finishing the book. The action will not have you on the edge of your seat, and yet there is the mystery as to why Holly is back in town, what occurred while she was away, who (if anyone) is watching her and lastly what is her secret?
This is a book which sneaks up on the reader and taps one on the shoulder to let the reader know it is not down revealing its secrets yet. Just wait! There is more to come. I really enjoy when a book can surprise me. I thought I had this book figured out early on and after a couple of twists and turns realized, the Author had a couple of tricks up her sleeve!
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book has it all, mystery, suspence lots of characters with secrets to keep from the reader definatly a page turner kept me on the edge of my seat till the end, which is a mindblower.
Love to read more of the autors books.
This is the 5th novel I have read by author K.L. Slater and have found them all very entertaining and extremely well written. This psychological thriller was no different and was so very close to getting a 5 star rating off me. The book was instantly readable and in fact I hadn't planned to read it this weekend but once started I couldn't put it down. Excellent characters, full of suspense and so well paced it is a must read for anyone who like psychological thrillers.
Holly is the 'visitor' having left Nottingham 10 years ago, believing she would never return. But following a bad experience in Manchester she has returned and is staying with Cora. David is 40 years old and lives at home with his mother and will not go out after dark, following an incident that no one will mention. He works part time as a car park attendant but spends his afternoons watching the people on the street, keeping a close eye on their lives under the self appointed neighbourhood watch tag.
Holly and David strike up an odd friendship, both hoping that they can make fresh start. But both have dark secrets that they would like to keep hidden and trouble seems to be the likely outcome.
This really is an excellent read and I highly recommend it.
I would like to thank Net Galley and Bookouture for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
I found ‘The Visitor’ an excellent read. This is the fourth book I have read by this author and I have enjoyed all of them. This did not disappoint.
Holly returns to her hometown of Nottingham after spending ten years in Manchester. She is broke and has nowhere to live. She meets Cora, who offers her a roof over her head and food in return for a companion. Holly wants to get her life back on track so she seeks employment. The reader is aware that she wants money to look for Evan.
Next door to Cora lives David, who is more aware and clever than people give him credit for as he is suffering from a disorder and tends to be ignored or picked on by many.
The story flows between Holly in the present day living and working Nottingham and her ordeal from living in Manchester interspersed with a narrative from David. Cleverly plotted and a great ending. Loved it
An excellent read and highly recommended. Thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture and KL Slater for the ARC in return for my honest review.
Omg! Slater is amazing! She is such a talented writer! Up to the very last page you will be shocked! Her cast of characters are so real!!!! Such a memorable book! Holly had such an unfortunate upbringing! You will cheer for her when her friend Markus offers her a great opportunity to work in Manchester for
Anrich family! You won't BELIEVE what the family has in store for her and how her time there will change her life forever! Is it a coincidence that she finds Cora? Cora find her sobbing in the post office and offers her a place to stay. David, Cora's neighbor,
An already troubled person befriends Holly. The end will have you gasping in disbelief! Whoa!!!!! 10 Stars!
I just love everything this author writes! This was another slow burner with well written characters and a setting the scene without unnecessary waffle and heavy prose.
Loved it!
First, thank you, Netgalley, for allowing me to read this as an ARC.
The Visitor is billed as an "unputdownable psychological thriller," which is why I wanted to read it. Truth be known, I put it down. Several times.
While the storyline and plot ARE intricately woven, and the author doles out "clues" to what's happened - and what happened in the past - well, I never connected with the characters on an emotional basis and most of them were just plain creepy.
Holly returns to her home town after a 10 year absence. She has a goal she needs to accomplish and this is the motivating action behind everything that she does and that happens in the present story. Her present story is interspersed with what happened to her during those 10 years she was "away."
David is the 40year old guy who lives next door to where Holly is currently staying. David is, well, he's just plain creepy. But there's a reason, and the author explains this well throughout the tale.
Holly is staying with Cora, an elderly stranger who takes her in.
All three of their lives, the choices they have made in life, and the things that happen to them all revolve around one thing: secrets.
This story - for me - had the potential to be a 5 star book. Well written, with great insights into behavior, and a plot that made sense ( when so many don't!) But I just couldn't connect with the characters on any level and that's why I'm rating it 4 stars.
KL Slater is such an amazing author! She knocked it out of park again with The Visitor! It’s such a chilling, gripping thriller with jarring twists! If you love thrillers as much as I do, this is absolute MUST READ!!
Oh WOW !!! Another brilliant story from K L Slater. I was hooked from the very first page and had no idea how it would end. Never in my wildest dreams would I have guessed the ending. !! Amazing twists. Best book yet from this author.
Quickly becoming one of my favourite authors. Good characterisation. Quite a lot of suspense
I have read previous books by K.L.Slater so knew I was in for a good read and ‘The Visitor’ did not disappoint
What I loved about this book is that the story built and built and you never knew the full story of the characters or what had brought them together until the final few chapters, so there is a story that you get involved with but all the time the ‘other’ story is building and you are fed tantalising hints and ‘almosts’ as the author builds and builds BOTH stories....It is very cleverly and brilliantly done and had me guessing various scenarios throughout
The writing flows from the first line and the characters are wonderfully brought to life.... interesting, dark and complex characters that I loved reading about
The stories continues building to a tense finale and you feel you have invested your time well and read a really, really good book
Stalking, obsession, greed and past-terrible events all mix to make a book you will find hard to have a break from and wont settle until you find out the truth....the terrible truth
Awesome book 10/10 5 stars
Another fantastic book by KL Slater, her books are just amazing, the minute you see the book cover you know you have to read it, The Visitor was an un-putdownable, addictive read, straight from the beginning you are drawn in by the characters and have a sense of gloom and lots of secrets, my favourite character was David, such a nice person inside but you just had a feeling about him, and was there another side to him? well done K L Slater you have smashed it again!!.
In some ways, this book was soooo good! In others, not so much. I loved that everyone had a secret, all of the characters are hiding something and you want to keep turning the pages to find out what, why, when...
I didn't like that everything wraps up in the last couple of chapters. All of a sudden, everyone's secrets are revealed and it just seemed so fast, at least for me.
While reading, I changed my mind so many times about whether a character was up to no good or not. I was interested to read all of Holly's story, I really wanted to know what had happened in the ten years she had been gone. And David! Was he really just a misunderstood, weird guy next door or was he something more sinister?
This novel was a bit choppy for me also, Holly's POV switches from present to past and back with no warning and sometimes I had to go back to figure it out. The same thing happens with David's POV. While I still wanted to keep reading, I just found it a bit offputting at times.
Half of me really enjoyed this and half of me was disappointed with the lack of depth in quite a few areas. Overall though, I enjoy things are not what they seem books.
Thanks to Netgalley for the copy in exchange for an honest review.
I would like to thank Bookouture and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘The Visitor’ by KL Slater in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
David’s in his forties and people think he’s ‘different’ as he likes to watch neighbours from his bedroom window and film them on CCTV for his own ‘neighbourhood watch’. Whilst looking out of his window he sees a young woman, Holly, in his neighbour Cora Barrett’s garden and discovers that Cora has let Holly stay with her in her house for company. But Holly isn’t what she seems and has secrets from the time she lived in Manchester.
The story moves effortlessly between Holly’s past and present, to David’s preoccupation with jotting notes in his Rolodex system and his job at Kellington’s. I warmed to David who finds life a struggle and just wants someone to be friends with. As I was reading I could sense there was something not quite right with Holly but it wasn’t until the end that everything becomes clear. ‘The Visitor’ is a thoroughly entertaining psychological novel that’s easy to read with interesting characters and a strong storyline. I can recommend it.
Having read and loved all of K.L. Slaters previous books, I was very much looking forward to starting her latest release.
I was so intrigued in this story from the very beginning, the author does an exceptional job of creating an atmosphere and building tension amongst the characters. I was never sure who to trust or what secrets were being hidden. I genuinely had no clue what way the story would go and The Visitor quickly became a story that was impossible to put down, I was up late because I just had to finish it in one sitting.
K.L. Slater has written another truly fantastic book that will have you racing through the pages, and I would thouroughly recommend this.
Thank you
David and Holly are next-door neighbours. They both have mysterious pasts that they are trying to forget and move on from. They yearn for a new, different life and are biding their time waiting for an opportunity to reveal itself. They are outcasts, a little different from everyone else and are living on the edge of society. They sense their similarity and gradually gravitate together to become friends.
David is on medication to keep him within the realms of normal. His past is alluded to but not revealed until nearly the end of the novel. He works part time as a car park attendant at an exclusive department store in Nottingham, not far from Wollaston where he lives in Baker Crescent, a nice area; quiet and respectable. He watches the residents of the crescent where he lives from his bedroom window, or sometimes from their gardens. Unknown to them, he sees himself as their protector; a neighbourhood watch expert in his own free time, someone who will protect their locality.
Holly has moved in with an elderly lady called Cora Barrett who took pity on her and offered her a room when she moved back to Wollaston from Manchester. It is her home village where she used to live after the death of her parents. She had left her Aunt and Uncle’s house for a job in Manchester, where she ran into trouble and had been wronged. Her experience casts a shadow over her life and she is determined to save up and return for what is rightfully hers. What is rightfully hers is also kept under wraps until the end of the novel.
The stories of these two individuals and how it impacts on the other characters in their lives is exactly what this novel is about. The storytelling was driven by it. The other characters were mainly neighbours and work colleagues in the main story but the characters in Holly’s back story were different. I felt compelled to read on, although the build up to the action was measured if not slow. The climax of the story was quite exciting
I would like to thank NetGalley and publisher Bookouture for my copy of this novel, sent to me in return for an honest review. I enjoyed reading ‘The Visitor’ and thought that the suspense and tension build up was good. It’s a 6.5/10 from me.
