A flight disappears off radar with Matthew Werner, a banking executive at a powerful offshore bank, on board. His widow, Annabel, has more questions than answers, especially once she starts to uncover the secrets he left behind. Will Annabel's persistence in searching for the truth put a target directly on her back?
Journalist Marina Tourneau has everything she ever wanted, with her successful fiance giving the young woman an entry into the world of the rich and powerful. When her mentor unexpectedly dies, Marina agrees to dig into the story he left unfinished. Will Marina and Annabel's worlds come together in the most unexpected way?
I liked The Banker's Wife for its concept and thrilling pace, but the story itself was lacking. Both women were interesting, though neither one could have carried the plot on their own. This book reminded me of a spy thriller movie, with a lot of action and very little going on behind the scenes. The author led the plot a little too much, so the ending was not really a surprise.
Readers looking for a beach read in the mystery thriller and suspense genre may enjoy The Banker's Wife.
Disclaimer: I was given an Advanced Reader's Copy of The Banker's Wife by NetGalley and the publisher. The decision to read and review this novel was entirely my own.
This book was sooo good! Read like a movie! No wonder everyone was buzzing about this title! Enjoyed it so much I gifted friends with a copy!
I would like to thank NetGalley for the opportunity to review this book even though I did not finish this book.
An interesting thriller that will have you guessing and second guessing what exactly is going on and who is responsible. Was the plane crash an accident or was there something more sinister at play?
You will be on the edge of your seat as you flip through these pages and uncover the mystery of it all.
A definite must read that I recommend you add to your TBR.
I really, really enjoyed this thrill-ride of a story. The multiple perspectives and constant guessing at the truth kept me on my toes for the entire ride. One that I definitely did not want to end. Wow.
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced copy of this book. I have tried several times to finishe this book and I cannot. There were just too many characters for me to keep straight and I did not finish the book.
Cristina Alger’s The Banker’s Wife is a fast-paced thriller that will have you flipping the pages. Matthew is a banking insider at Swiss United when his plane crashes under suspicious circumstances. Annabel, his wife, is devastated and unprepared for all the questions raised after his death.
I was instantly hooked by this story and loved the two strong female characters. The story is fascinating and addictive., with a an unexpected twist towards the end. This is my first Cristina Alger book and I’m excited to read her other books.
I wanted to like this book, but unfortunately I can not recommend it. I thought there were too many characters and the plot too convoluted to follow. My attention wandered repeatedly and I found myself having to reread passages multiple times.
THE BANKER’S WIFE by Cristina Alger was a well-written and solid suspense but with three narrators going, it was a little hard for me to keep track of all the characters, even by the end. This was the first time I’ve done a suspense on audiobook and that impacted my experience. The audiobook narrator was great considering all the characters she had to give a unique voice to. I know so many that really enjoyed this book so maybe I just wasn’t listening at the right time.
Did not like this book and I tried my best to finish it, but could not. The story did not seem interesting.
The Banker’s Wife was fast paced, twisted, and suspenseful! From page one on, something was happening and somebody was watching or involved. Annabel is living with her husband Matthew in Geneva. Matthew is working for a top bank there. When Matthew dies in a plane crash, Annabel finds out that there is a deceptive world at the bank. She quickly realizes that maybe Matthew’s death wasn’t an accident and feels that something is being kept from her. At the same time, there is a journalist who has stumbled upon secretive information leaked from an anonymous source. As more data is leaked, everyone realizes exactly how big this is. Everything becomes more tense as more and more is revealed. Who can be trusted? Who is telling the truth? Who is hiding something?
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC
I know so many people raved about this but, but I just felt like there was so much going on and the characters seemed unrealistic (how could everyone be so perfect!
While reading this, it read like a movie of the week, and might be one of those rare cases where if a movie was ever made out of this book. the movie would be a hundred times better. Its not to say it didn't have its pros. It did keep me interested but not in a "Omg I have to find out what happens" kind of way, but interested enough where I did want to finish it.
The Bankers Wife was a gripping thriller that took you to every aspect of trying to figure out what was really going on and what was going to happen next! This was such an amazing book and I can’t wait to see what else is released from this author!
4.5
Annabel is married to Matthew, who works for a bank named Swiss United. They live in Geneva. Marina is engaged to Grant, whose father is getting ready to announce his candidacy for President. They live in the states. When Matthew is suddenly killed in a plane crash, Annabel starts to ask questions that certain higher ups don’t want answered. And when Marin’s boss turns up dead, she picks up on a story he was working on about banks that provide tax havens for the wealthy and for terrorists. Because of their questions, these two women’s lives will change in ways they never could have expected.
This was fast paced and exciting. People close to both women are turning up dead. The question that caused me to race through this book was - will Annabel and Marina make it through this alive?
I liked both women immediately. Even though Annabel lived a privileged life with Matthew, this doesn’t mean she’s a pushover. Marina’s investigative nature won’t allow her to drop her story, even though it could significantly change her life. I thought the author did an excellent job of slowly bringing these two women’s story together. What a ride!
My thanks to Penguin Group Putnam and Netgalley.
A really enjoyable mystery/thriller alternating between the perspectives of the "banker's wife" of the title - a woman whose Swiss banker husband has just died in a private plane crash - and a female journalist tracking down a story which involves the same Swiss bank. Both characters are great - intelligent women trying to solve mysteries, not just damsels in distress. This book has the enjoyable feel of an old school spy thriller, though neither character is a spy. It's a refreshing change from the type of thriller which over-predominates these days, as indicated with a wink by one of the characters in the book who describes the book she is reading in an early scene as one of those books with the word "girl" in the title and an unreliable narrator. The narrators here are reliable, they just don't have all the information, so we join them on their journey to investigate the various mysteries of the book. If you're a fan of Chris Pavone's books, I think you'd enjoy this one too (and vice versa).
Not many people can get a psychological thriller right, sometimes they mess up in the end and sometimes itshard to simply dive into it. But Cristina did a pretty good job at easing the reader into the story and slayeddd the ending! i would recommend it during a short trip or something
Thank you #NetGalley for an advanced copy of #TheBankersWife!
I finished this book just a few minutes ago and I’m struggling on how to honestly review it... When I first became a NetGalley member this is one of the books I so desparately wanted to be approved for. It took me a little while to actually start reading it (I only have about 450 books on my “want to read” list) and I’m sad to say it wasn’t as great as I’d expected/hoped. Don’t get me wrong, this was a good book and I would recommend it but for me personally the first half was a little slow. It seemed like it took a while to really get to the interesting, plot-twisting parts and those are what I love about reading thrillers. Now, the second half of the book had a much faster pace. I found myself reading faster and faster to find out what was going on and how everything was going to end for the two major characters, Marina and Annabel. While there were some twists I didn’t see coming, most of the ending was predictable and didn’t have as much action (I think this is the word I’m looking for...) and *Spoiler* almost everyone lives happily ever after... I would’ve liked a little bit more suspense and maybe some shockers in regards to what happened to the characters.
An ultimately contrived thriller of money
laundering and banking high jinks. Although the first part of the book was fast-paced and suspenseful, the storyline devolved into a convoluted morass.
The Banker's Wife will have you hooked from the beginning!
Get ready for a thriller which will leave you turning pages faster than your fingers can move! The story of international bankers includes murders, high fashion, and twists and turns but at the core is a love story - between Annabel and Matthew. Matthew is killed in a plane crash at the beginning of the book - and what follows is a dual story line of Annabel and a reporter Marina both whom are trying to discover what really happened when the plane went down.
I can't recommend this enough to my reader friends, this was one of the best thrillers I have read this year.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ecopy for my Kindle.
A good mystery concerning oversea finances and corruption with twists that made the an interesting read. Overall, I liked the book except for the profanity.
