First off, before reading this book, you will need pen and paper. There are a lot of characters to keep track of.
The beginning of the book as a lot of momentum. Marina is happily engaged to Grant. Annabel is married to her banker husband, Matthew, who is in a world of trouble and whose fate is told early one.
The middle of the book reaches plateau and just stays there. A lot of Who Dunnit is going on. The book as several twists and turns you really need to stay focused. Like I said a lot of characters. There is a lot of things going on with who can Marina & Annbel trust.
The ending is incredible and surprising. I really enjoyed the ending.
I thought part of contents didn’t need to be there.
Do you want a fast paced summer read? This is definitely one for you. I love a good book with different POV’s as the structure and the pace itself is amazing. You get a story, bold characters, a story told and in the end you can feel the emotional hangover at the end. I appreciated the writing and the journalist integrity intertwined into the story. Every story has three sides to it and Cristina Alger definitely delivered. Thank you Putman for a gifted Arc to enjoy along with Get Red PR.
This is a great book about secrets and corruption and money - LOTS of money. It's a clever mystery that keeps you guessing over whether characters are honest or corrupt and your opinion is going to change several times until you get to the fantastic ending of the book.
There are two strong female characters that most of the book revolves around - Annabel the widow of a banker killed in a plane crash who left clues behind over what was going on at the Swiss bank that employed him and Marina - a journalist who gets a tip about money laundering by Swiss banks and has to follow the story to the end. Both women end up being pursued by people who don't want them to share any of the information that they have and will stop at nothing to make sure that they remain silent. I really can't say much about the plot without giving away potential spoilers but I will say that it's fast paced and a real page turner! I loved it.
I read an advance copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
I really enjoyed the authors first book The Darlings. Unfortunately this didn't follow in the first books foot steps. I thought the premise was good, but the execution not so much. I didn't like the two female characters much. Annabell and Marina were meh to me. The ending was tidy and tied up, another thing I'm not a fan of. Just run of the mill, not a standout. Thanks Netgalley for the book in exchange for an honest opinion.
“The Bankers Wife” by Cristina Alger opens with a cringe-worthy scenario; someone is throwing a temper tantrum in an airport. If that were not bad enough, a storm with strong crosswinds and a downpour of sleet has reduced visibility to virtually nothing. In the midst of the chaos, a phone call reports, “It’s done. Only one flight departed and they were on it.” Less than one hour later over the French Alps, the plane simply fell off the radar, as though it had never existed at all.
The book continues as two intertwined narratives. Chapters alternate with differing point of view, and each main character is identified in the chapter heading. Marina is a senior journalist at “Press,” magazine, married to Grant, with a father-in-law contemplating running for president. When her boss, Duncan himself, sends her on a clandestine assignment to pick up a flash drive containing highly important but top-secret information, Marina anticipates being on the tail of a good story with dirty money hidden away in shadow accounts. However, things take an unexpected turn.
“It’s Duncan. Duncan Sander. He’s dead.”
Annabel Werner is living in Geneva and married to Matthew, a successful banker. Although she has a lavish lifestyle paid for with giant banker’s salary, Geneva would never be home to her. Annabel was bored, missed work, and wanted children. With a knock on her door, her life takes an unexpected turn as well.
“Your husband’s plane from London did not land as scheduled. We believe it crashed in the Alps.”
Unexplained deaths, a suspicious plane crash, double dealings, bank improprieties, illegal transactions, and downright theft keep readers turning the pages at a frantic pace. Interesting characters, picturesque international settings, and high finance crime blend to make a riveting story. Little clues are woven into the story to tease the outcome.
I received a copy of “The Bankers Wife” from Cristina Alger, Penguin Group, and NetGalley. It is a gripping book with strong, reliable, female characters who anchor the action. I highly recommend it.
The Banker’s Wife is full of suspense, mystery, and intrigue, all of my favorites! I enjoyed all of the characters so much, as well as the settings that were so vividly described I felt like I was there. The plot twists were unexpected and amazing. I will definitely read more books by this author!
And oh my gosh, you need to snag this when it comes out July 3. It was a quick mystery read that kept me on my toes. There’s lots of characters to keep straight which was a bit confusing initially, but my nerves were on high towards the end of this. I kept thinking, how is this going to pan out?! I’m nervous! It’s suspenseful, and has two stories going at once that are both equally as exciting. Definite ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me! Move it to the top of your list, it was so good!
Excellent thriller that best of all features women in roles where we normally see men. Annabel, Marina, and Zoe all play a role in exposing the perfidy of hidden bank deposits and support for the Assad regime. Zoe is the assistant to Matthew, Annabel's husband who is a tax lawyer at the Swiss bank. Things begin to fall apart for both of them when Matthew's plane goes down. Marina is a journalist engaged to the son of a powerful man who plans to run for President. The underling situation is reminiscent of the Panama Papers, which have received less publicity than they should, likely because of the complexity of the information. The story is told from alternating viewpoints, you'll root for all of them, and there's good tension. Thanks to the publisher for the ARC. A well written plot driven page turner that deserves a wide readership because it's a good one.
First I want to thank netgalley and the publisher for an advanced copy for my kindle. Wow what a ride! Started off a little slow introducing us to Annabelle and marina. Annabelle is married to Mathew a wealthy Swiss banker who handles money for wealthy people including some not so nice people. Marina is an American reporter who works for a paper and whose boss Duncan is investigating the Swiss bank that Mathew works for , hiding money to avoid taxes in America. When Duncan ends up dead shot in the head in his home in America and Mathew ends up dead suddenly in his private plane over the mountains two days apart, marina starts investigating the deaths after she receives a usb from an inside source of the bank that holds clients information including terrorists. Annabelle realizes after the death of her husband that her life wasn’t what it seems and her husbands employer will stop at nothing including murder to get there clients information back off his sudden missing laptop and maybe her friends aren’t her friends. I loved this book it was a quick read only because I couldn’t put it down!
Its bad enough to lose a spouse, but then to find that so much of what you thought turns out to be a lie. Is betrayal ok if it is to protect someone or right a wrong.
Annabel gave up a lot to accompany Matthew to Switzerland, and when he dies in a plane crash she is left to try to sort out what is going on.
Marina is hoping to marry her handsome finance but work, and a murder, gets in the way.
The usual really rich, private plane, incredible clothes and gorgeous hair people with black hearts are all over this story.
Its a good read, kind of reminds me of Christopher Reich.
Banking, tax avoidance, stealing, First class corporate behavior.
Enjoy.

really liked it
Why pay your taxes??? It's estimated that more than 30 Trillion dollars are hidden untaxed in offshore banks. This is a riveting page turner that involves a possible whistle blowing effort to expose this inequity. Built with a cast of millionaires , billionaires, CEO's, dictators, lawyers and private bankers. The existence of law firms whose sole business is setting up shell corporations to allow offshore banking is bad enough .... but then would be ineffective save for the multitude of private bankers who look the other way while expediting these transactions.
Quickly find yourself immersed in the dirty dealings ... with a glimmer of hope until private banker, Matthew Werner is killed in a mysterious plane accident. The intrigue takes off when the "banker's wife", Annabelle senses something is not right. He was coming home from London when she expected he was on business in a different country. The story is told in alternating sequences from her and Marina, an investigational journalist. Marina was off on vacation with her rich husband to be , Grant, the son of a wealthy business man who is scheduled to announce his candidacy for president. She receives a phone call that her mentor, Duncan, has been murdered (who apparently was working on a story about offshore banking). What ensues is a multidimensional page turner thriller that forces the reader to gobble it up ... extremely well plotted with cinematic dialogue that rushes to satisfying denouement . Thanks to Netgalley & Penguin Random House for providing this fun Uncorrected proof in exchange for an honest review.
4.5 stars! I love a good “girl power” thriller and an original topic. This book centers on the corruption of Swiss United Bank and its secret interactions with terrorists, powerful leaders, and private bankers. The story follows Annabelle, a newly widowed wife of a private banker, Zoe, an assistant to a private banker, and Marina, a journalist determined to uncover the secrets. I found myself engrossed in the story and on the edge of my seat in regards to who would be killed off next. I have also become strangely fascinated with the world of off shore banks. Adding more of Alger’s books to my to read list immediately!
Thank you to NetGalley and Putnam Books for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
I don’t do comparisons lightly, so when I say The Banker’s Wife was reminiscent of one of my all-time favorite books, The Firm, I mean it. International banking—check, banking baddies—check, feisty heroines—check, surprising plot turns—check.
I seriously couldn’t put this one down. Seriously. Could. Not. Put. This. Down.
The characters were well done, relatable, and rootable. The story is told via Annabel and Marina and I found myself totally transfixed by both of their stories. Sometimes when a story is told with dual perspectives, a reader will find they identify or prefer one or the other. Both of these stories had me flipping the pages. And both of their conclusions were satisfying and rewarding to this reader.
Well done, Ms. Alger, I look forward to your backlist. And to your nextlist.
I received an ARC of this book for an honest review.
3.5ish stars, rounded up. This was an entertaining and fairly fast paced thriller. Annabel is grieving the loss of her husband Matthew, who was in a plane crash returning from a business meeting, when she suddenly begins to realize that the work he was doing with a Swiss bank was possibly not entirely on the up and up. Marina is an intrepid reporter who had been working with her mentor to investigate some shady business dealings and finances when he is killed in his home. The connections between these two seemingly unrelated deaths begin to come together across continents as both of the women are drawn into this complicated web of deceit. The story plays out almost cinematically, with danger around each twist as the women have to suss out who they really can trust. The ripped from the headlines feeling lends the story intrigue as it feels like something that really could happen, but this time readers get to experience what it might be like to be unknowingly and unwillingly be a part of the drama.
After Annabel's husband, Matthew, was killed in a small plane crash, both she and journalist Marina investigated the whys. Even though the two woman have never met, their worlds will soon collide in this fast-paced, sophisticated, and suspenseful financial thriller.
This was a fascinating look at offshore banking and hidden Swiss bank accounts and reminded me a bit of books by Ken Follett and Dan Brown. The story focused on two strong female characters: Annabel, who was recently widowed, and Marina, an investigative journalist. After Matthew's death, Annabel started to wonder if things at Swiss United bank, where Matthew worked as a tax attorney, were above board. Did someone at the bank want him silenced? Meanwhile, Marina was on the other side of the world in NYC wondering if her boss, Duncan, was really killed during a random home invasion. Is it possible that the two deaths were somehow related?
I read The Banker's Wife in 1.5 days because I couldn't put it down! This was my first book by this author, and I look forward to more.

Great book, very enthralling..
Thomas Jensen an M16 agent is at a London airport. He appears to be waiting for the weather to clear before boarding his flight like so many other people nearby.
\He observes a man and woman slip un noticed out an exit door and board a private plane. Once the plane is in the air he tells his tele[hone caller the plane has taken off with its passengers with a cryptic "Its's done".
Less than an hour later the plane disappears from radar somewhere in the French alps and is presumed to have crashed.
Morty Reiss, hedge fund manager of one of the largest Ponzi schemes supposedly committed suicide but his body was never found. Now there's evidence that he's living off his 70 million United Swiss Bank,
Duncan, editor of Press Magazine and Marina his assistant are involved in a sensational story of revealing numbered swiss bank accounts and their account holders.
Duncan is later found dead and Marina's life is in danger. He had asked her to meet a contact and obtain a USB device containing information for their story.
Annabel Weber is the widow of a bank manger who was on the plane that crashed along with a middle eastern woman who was a hedge fund manger but whose family is deeply involved with the bank's numbered accounts
She discovers that photos of the plane crash show a plane that crashed over a year ago. Her husband Matthew was killed because he was leaking information to Duncan about the numbered swiss bank accounts and who the account holders were, gathering evidence for the U S Department of Justice. The U S Department of Justice contact commits suicide supposedly.
His boss was grooming him to take over that bank program and he was against it as his boss had leveraged secrets over him as well as other employees as well as some of the account holders.
Annabel finds a USB drive in the frame of a painting in her apartment which contains information her husband had about his findings.
Lots of twists and turns in this: seems like everyone is in danger of being killed.
A real shocker at the end.
This story is primarily told from the viewpoints of two women, Annabelle and Marina. Annabelle is the wife of a private banker, and Marina is an investigative journalist. The Banker’s Wife will take you on a wild ride through the world of offshore banking which is filled with secrets, murder, and lies. Private banking and investigative journalism come together to provide a fun read that’s sure to keep you guessing till the end.

My Review of “The Banker’s Wife” by Cristina Alger PENGUIN GROUP (PUTNAM) July 3, 2018
“The Bankers’s Wife” by Cristina Alger is a captivating, intriguing , suspenseful, intense and riveting novel. This was a page -turner that I couldn’t put down. The Genres for this novel are Fiction, Mystery, Suspense and Thriller. Kudos to Christina Alger for combining two enthralling storylines, and characters. In this novel are twists and turns, international banking crimes, criminal families, politics, journalism, and the need to seek the truth at whatever the cost.
The author describes the characters as complex and complicated. There are secrets, espionage, danger , betrayal and death. Annabel Lerner, now a widow is searching for the reasons for her husband’s plane crash. Michael Lerner had worked at Swiss United a powerful off shore bank. The more that Annabel investigates, the more danger she realizes she is in.
In New York, Marina Tourneau, is a journalist, that is engaged to Grant Ellis. Grant’s father is a politician considering running for the Presidency of the United States. Marina has promised to end her journalism career for a short while, but is called to help her mentor with one important story. After her mentor’s death, Marina is determined at any cost to find the truth. As she investigates she uncovers information that could be harmful to powerful men, politics and finances. Marina also discovers that her life is in danger.
I would highly recommend this fascinating and engaging novel to those readers that appreciate the chase, adventure, suspense and intrigue. I received an ARC from Netgalley to read and review.
4.5 stars. This is a fast paced thriller that starts with some mysterious, if not convenient deaths. The actions of offshore banking are uncovered, and pieces begin to fall into place. There are a couple of different story lines in this book, but I thought it was easy to keep track of the characters and the connections. I had a hard time putting this book down, as I was anxious to figure out the mystery myself!
In a refreshing departure from a market saturated with unreliable narrator "Girl" books, The Banker's Wife details corruption in the world of private investment banking and secret numbered accounts. These bankers aren't like any I know but I did get a private chuckle as I read about anti-money laundering regulations, politically sensitive people and sanctions lists. Why? Because it is big scary business, usually tied to criminal behavior and terrorism, that is underscored in this book when people who are leaking information about the interworkings of private Swiss banks and their clients start dying. I was able to enjoy the book on a personal level as an intelligent thriller and on a more professional level as I get to go through a couple hours of training every year to make sure I understand how to identify money laundering. I also really enjoyed that most of the main characters were women. This was a terrific book!
