This book is mostly photographs of the Boardwalk in Ocean City, New Jersey. There is some text but not a lot of history of the boardwalk or the shops. The book however is a very superficial look at the boardwalk. The pictures and text are very straight for word. After reading the book I did not feel like I had armchair traveled or knew the area.
I had high hopes for this book, as I grew up around Ocean City NJ. I hoped for some really exquisite imagery and accompanying text. Instead, this book was like watching someone's home reel-to-reel movies with your Uncle Ed narrating. I feel badly writing a negative review but fear this book will not appeal to many.
I grew up going to Ocean City, NJ, so was really excited to check out this book. Thank you for bringing back such happy memories!
I love boardwalks and while I have not yet been to Ocean City, NJ - after reading this book I certainly want to check it out. The book is mostly photos - which is perfect because then I don't have to think and can just daydream about being there. The boardwalk is 2.5 miles of summer. I liked that this book covered the history of the boardwalk all the way to present day. Definitely something to add to a potential vacation destination list!
I received a free e-copy of this book in order to write this review, I was not otherwise compensated.
To publish a "current" book of the Ocean City Boardwalk and to share it's history while leaving out the most recent damage, changes and then improvements to it after Hurricane Sandy feels like the book comes up a bit short. Realistically, the Ocean City boardwalk, as well as most of NJ's boardwalk attractions, was destroyed and then rebuilt during that storm, yet in the "brief history" section, while there are mentions of previous storms, there is no mention of this particular storm.
Alight with historical facts over the last centuries developments that have taken place on sites photographed within the book, we gain an insight into America and their culture surrounding the areas we visit in the book.
We visit beaches, arcades, waterparks, local costal wildlife, movie theatres, sweet, popcorn and ice cream shops and witness signs evolving over time up to modern day.
This is a book for everyone who wishes to visit or just learn more about this area of America.
Although this book has some beautiful and modern photos of the New Jersey Boardwalk, I also felt that this book was lacking. Aside from glancing at the photos, nothing else about this book excited me. The font, the backgrounds, and the layout could definitely use an upgrade. I did find the information in this book to be interesting, and I feel like it could certainly be a good resource for knowledge on this subject... but at a glance, it really isn't grabbing anyone's attention.
I received a free copy of this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Last year on vacation my husband took me to the Jersey Shore and we picked my Mother In Law up outside of Philly to ride along. We went to Wildwood instead of Ocean City though. This was my first time in New Jersey, so everything was new and exciting to me. We are planning to go back again for the day this year and go to Ocean City's boardwalk. My husband and Mother In Law have been here many times. My husband was raised in Philadelphia. Me I'm a southern girl. I have never walked a boardwalk like the one in Wildwood, and it was freezing and raining when we went the end of May last year. I am hoping for sun and no rain this year.
When I saw this book listed on Netgalley I immediately requested it, and was accepted to receive it. I couldn't get it downloaded fast enough and jumped right into it. The pictures in this book took me back to Wildwood and I am really excited for May to get here this year so I can go see these sites for myself.
There are pictures both old and new in the book. I mean pictures as it is today and pictures from the past. If you have ever been to the Ocean City Boardwalk this will bring back tons of memories, and if you are like me and have never been, it will make you want to go.
There are pictures of the beach itself, the wildlife (both human and animal), shops, and other sites along the boardwalk. There are short histories about some of the places and the people who started them.
I received this book from the Author or Publisher via Netgalley.com to read and review.
