This book was very informative and appeared well researched. It is a technical book so requires an interest in the topic
This is a fascinating account of a remarkable episode in the history of international finance and U.S. law that most experts in these fields are unaware of. I found it to be relevant to international political economy in the 21st century in a number of ways. While much of the relevant background details are technical and potentially dry, the author did a wonderful job of keeping the reader engaged by presenting relevant information about the personalities involved.
A book about the gold standard could be the driest read but the author does a good job of making it interesting, relevant and insightful. i enjoyed this read and would recommend it to others.
I received a free Kindle copy of American Default by Sebastian Edwards courtesy of Net Galley and Princeton University Press, the publisher. It was with the understanding that I would post a review on Net Galley, Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes and Noble and my fiction book review blog. I also posted it to my Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google Plus pages.
I requested this book as I am interested in american history and the description made this book sound interesting. This is the first book by Sebastian Edwards that I have read.
The subtitle of this book "The Untold Story of FDR, the Supreme Court and the Battle over Gold" is an adequate description of the contents. It is a well researched book that details the battle by Franklin Delano Roosevelt to take the United States off of the gold standard. The subject has not been adequately covered before to my knowledge and this book addresses that gap. It is an interesting read, but not exactly a page turner.
I recommend this book to anyone who has an interest on how the United States abandoned the gold standard.
American Default by Sebastian Edwards was received direct from the publisher. Many people know that FDR removed America from the gold standard back around the time of the US Depression. Hardly no one knows how this came to be, how many Americans got "robbed" by the US Government, or how it affected (affects) us still to this day. We all know that America is 20 trillion dollars in debt. If not for FDR, maybe we would not be so and the politicians wold not still be causing that amount to rise. If you want to know the real deal and see how politicians can and still do their shenanigans, give this book a read.
4 Stars.
