Thanks to Net Galley for the ARC. Not the first book I have read, but Harbison and won’t be my last as I just can’t help but enjoy her writing.
That said, this time out in the ARC I received, the main character known as Willa (not Jane as in the finalized copy) was dealing with the aftermath of her husband’s (Ben) death a few years ago. See Ben passed away while working to get their summer beach house in order. That was three years ago and Willa has yet to return. But she finally decides to go back to at least fix the house up to sell it as there are just too many memories to hold onto it in her eyes. Also in the three years since Ben passed on, Willa and her son Jamie have had a complicated mother-son relationship. While they aren’t really at odds with each other, they still don’t seem to be able to deal with all that has happened with his passing. Nor are they able to explain their own feelings to the other.
But all that is about to change with Willa returning to their family beach house. See Ben’s ghost appears to her. And as much as this appearance seems to help her in some ways, it also makes her question her own sanity. So, she gets her son, her best friend and best friend’s daughter to join her at the beach house to help with the renovations.
This is definitely a lighter read and perfect for the summer beach reading. See it really had many different levels of emotions for all the characters, especially Willa and Jamie. And yet the beach setting really does make this a summer contender. - Originally on Goodreads
This is just the book that makes you believe that those who have moved on to the next world, can stop in to peek on us. It is a reminder that our loved one are around us.
When Ben suddenly dies, Willa has no idea how to live.
She returns to the beach house to clean and sell it and Ben is there. Even Dolly the family dog feels it!
"I never thought about how to live. But he'd come to tell me."
A novel of love, hope, resilience, tears and laughter. I loved it!
I got sent an invite to read -sounded memorable. I have read 2 others of Beth Harbison's and I enjoyed those.
I started reading and I could not stop. I got wrapped up in the story and I had to keep reading. I will be looking for more of Beth's books to read. She is an enjoyable read!
Willa is feeling dead after husband's death.
She must sell beach house, which is the place of his death.
The cottage needs to get ready to go on market. Then a surprise visitor also comes to help Willa.
The story switches between mother and son.
I loved that dynamic! As a mother with a son, I treasured it.
I recommend this book!!
This wonderful, heartfelt story centers around a grieving widow named Willa who is struggling to overcome the death of her husband Ben who passed away three years prior. While in their old beach house packing up and preparing to sell the home, Willa starts seeing and hearing something strange...Ben! Is she seriously seeing a ghost, or just losing her mind?! Beth Harbison is a great author and I’ve read several of her books. Like the others, this one did not disappoint. A truly great story of family and friends coming together and enjoying a new life after death!
This was a very well written and emotional read about loss and love and ultimately figuring out how to live again. I very much enjoyed Willa’s heartbreaking yet uplifting journey with a ghostly twist on it.
Thank you to Netgalley for the ARC of this book.
#3.5 out of 5.. rounded up
Not so much into the supernatural stuff, and this was mostly what the book was about. That said
it is a easy read that you can just breeze through. Kept me interested enough but i found it just ended..done.. no more. Would have liked to have a little more.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an early release of this book
Unfortunately, this book could not keep my interest. I tried hard to get into it, and love it, but it just seemed to be so slowly paced and dragging. I was not able to completely finish, but will try at a different time and update accordingly.
Quick read. Recommended for anyone who liked “Ghost” with Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze. Thank you for the opportunity to read this ARC free of charge.
A story about love, motherhood, and friendship. While it drags along at times it is a good beach read about relationships and recovering from loss. Everyone experiences grief in different ways and recovery time varies. I think anyone that had lost a loved one unexpectedly has the fantasy of having one last conversation. the fantasy in this story gives us all hope for closure.
I would give this book 3.5/5 stars. I was super excited to read this as I love Beth Harbison. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. I liked the premise of the book and it was definitely a great beach read. I just felt it was a little repetitive. I also felt like there wasn't much character development. I liked how it switched perspective between Jamie and Willa. I actually preferred Jamie's perspective, though I thought the parts involving his interactions with Roxie were a bit unkind. For me there was too much ghost story. I also didn't like how she continued to lie to her best friend Kristen about who she was talking to, even after she told her she was seeing the ghost of her dead husband. I was happy when she finally admitted the truth. I was kind of hoping there would be a new man toward the end, but no such luck. I did like the way it ended. I thought everything was wrapped up very nicely; it just seemed to take a while to get there. I would recommend this book, but it wasn't my favorite of hers. Thank you to Net Galley and St. Martin's Press for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
Typically, I devour Harbison's books, but this one was different. I had difficulty getting into the story. The main character is at the family beach house to prepare to sell it. Her husband died there and she can't move past the sorrow. Most of the story involves her interaction with her husband's ghost. I just couldn't get interested in the story. It was like reading the movie Ghost. This one was a miss for me.
A ghost love story? A story of love involving a ghost? However it is described this is a touching story of love, loss, grief, and the painful path forward. It is a one sitting read and well worth it
Story of a widow who is having a problem overcoming the death of her husband. Ben who died 3 years ago in their vacation home while he was redoing the house. Willa is there getting the house in shape to sell but something is not right. She can feel Ben, she can see him and he is talking to her. Is she going crazy or is this real?. When Jaime, her teenage son comes to help with the repairs., Willa realizes that she hasn't been there as a mother since Bens death. Painting the house and spending time with Jaime helps repair the relationship between Mother and Son. It's a story of life. I cried thru parts of it but it was a good cry. The story is full of hope and love. It was a lovely story. I received this book from Net Galley for an honest review.
I agree with one reviewer about the 1 step forward 10 steps back, but I did finish this book. I always wonder why the writers feel women can’t handle what is thrown at them when there is a tragedy. I think put on you big girl panties and go through. I’m not saying she should have jumped in the next day but she was able to do what needed to be done.
Ahhh, Beth Harbison, I love you so. Every Time You Go Away was the perfect book for the weekend.
Willa is ready to put her beach house on the market after her husband died in it. She just needs to do some fixing up and stick the For Sale sign in the front yard.
But when she arrives at the house by herself, she finds an unexpected surprise. Her husband. She's not sure if she's seeing a real ghost or if she is just finally going completely crazy, but she isn't going to miss a chance to connect with Ben again.
Her best friend and her son soon join her, but Ben doesn't go away and she's trying to keep their conversations a secret so that she doesn't look like a complete nutter butter.
This is the book you need to read if you want to snuggle under blankets and have a nice cleansing cry. I loved it.
Willa returns to the beach house for the first time since her husband Ben died there three years earlier, and this is about her trying to move on from her loss - with Ben's help. The narration includes her son Jamie's perspective. I liked that Willa doesn't have to fall for another man; she's able to deal with the grief in other ways and we know that she'll be ok.
Thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for the ARC.
I have always enjoyed Beth Harbison's novel and I was excited to read her latest one. Like her others, it was a joy to read!
Three years after Ben dies, Willa and Jamie return to the beach house where he passed away to finally pack it up and get it ready to sell. Told from the viewpoints of Willa, Ben's beloved wife and Jamie, Ben's son, it's a sweet tale of grief, sorrow and moving on.
While Willa's story gripped my heart because I can only imagine her grief at losing the spouse she thought she'd grow old with, the story that really grabbed me was Jamie's. I lost my mother around the same age as Jamie so it was interesting to view a similar incident that I experienced through a boy's eye so to speak.
I was able to accept Ben's ghost as an aspect of this but there's parts of his ghostliness I wish was left behind or explained a bit better. I wish they'd either chosen the "past" Ben memories or the "present" Ben. But other than that, I think the ghost aspect was handled pretty well. Anyone who has suffered a loss has wished this was possible more times than they can count so for me it was a sweet idea.
Overall this is an engaging read that I thought was pretty light given the material. I would read another book just based on Kristen and Willa's friendship, they seem like such a fun team!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review.
This book touched me deeply. I haven't lost a spouse but I really felt that I could feel Willa's sorrow. Beth Harbison did a wonderful job with this book and showing how sometimes you hold on too long to the past so you miss the life going on around you now. I loved Willa. I could feel how much she loved Ben and how lost she felt without him. Jamie was a wonderful character. I was so glad to see him grow and to see how he and Willa healed as the story went on. Kristin and Kelsey were like a breathe of fresh air that both Willa and Jamie needed.
I cried while reading this book so much but it was a good cry. Almost every interaction with Ben and Willa left me crying. It broke my heart and healed it too.
I highly recommend this book.
I received an ARC from NetGalley and St. Martin's Press. Thank you to both.
I had a dfficult time getting through the first part of the book and gave up. I understand the Mother was grieving but it was like one step forward and ten back over and over. I appreciate Net Galley very much for the opportunity to read this book.
Every Time You Go Away is a sad, beautiful novel. It is a great summer read. It left me with a feeling of hope and wanting more. As always Beth Harbison's words paint a beautiful picture and story. Well worth the read!!
