3.5 Stars
I really enjoyed this book while I was reading it and found that it kept my interest, so I was thinking of it as a 5-star book. However, by the end my opinion had dropped to about 3.5 stars. It was certainly well written and kept my interest throughout--it was a book I wanted to get back to--but in the end I found that the twist was achieved at the expense of plausibility. I guessed the twist about 3/4 of the way through, possibly because it was pretty much the same as that of another book that came out earlier this year, although in that book it was the relationship between an ex-wife and the fiancee of her former husband; I don't want to mention the title of that book since I think it would be too much of a spoiler. In fact, it's hard to be specific in my criticism without giving away too much, but I just found that the story didn't ring true. Too many holes, too abrupt a change in what was revealed about the personality of some of the characters, and just too unbelievable that one of the characters would choose to resolve the problem in the way they did when there would have been more effective and honest means to do so otherwise. I also felt that the relationship between Emily and Adam was not well enough developed to explain what it was they saw in each other--except for occasionally great sex. It made Emily come across as weak for putting up with Adam's negative aspects and made her less likable. I would still recommend this book to others who might find the twist really fantastic, but for me, I would have preferred less shock and a more believable, flawless plot. Many thanks to NetGalley and to the publisher for an advance e-copy of this book.
This is a read that you won’t want to put down. What is happening between Emily and mother-in-law Pammie will have you turning page after page. Why is ther so much conflict and interference by Pammie and why is Emily’s boyfriend turned husband allowing. Yes boy meets girl, boy and girl fall in love and get “happily” married or do they. Sandie Jones will have you guesing.
Thank you netgalley for sending me a copy of this book to read. Although it is marketed as a psychological thriller, I found it to be more like a chick lit novel that gets a bit suspenseful at the end. The story was all over the place and predictable. Possibly the only redeeming quality was that it was fast-paced.
Talk about addicting! I had to know what in the world was going on with this story. The Author sure does know how to throw you off and I can’t believe The Other Woman is a debut novel!
What a well-written story and such intriguing characters! Emily and Pammie were just fantastic. Just reading about these two characters interacting was like watching a soap opera. They kept you at the edge of your seat just wondering what type of crazy thing was going to happen next and I couldn’t get enough.
I really don’t want to talk much about the overall plot because I think it should stay a surprise and you’ll defiantly be thankful once you pick it up yourself.
The Other Woman was such a fast-paced mess with your mind thriller and it won’t take you long to get through it. You will be racing to the end to find out what the outcome of this twisty, manipulative story is and I promise by the end of it you will be completely blown away.
I know I was! I had to set my Kindle down just to let it all sink in on what was happening. I couldn’t believe it!
This was a GREAT debut novel and I can’t wait to find out what else Sandie Jones has up her sleeve because you bet I will be reading it.
Wow!! This book was really good. I knew some people were slimy right away, but others, they surprised me. I loved the mystery, the psychological twisty story line and the clever ending. It ended well. It all wrapped up and made sense, there's nothing worse than a book that makes you question the author in the end. This is a "clever" book. That's my new genre I just made up. Clever.
First sentence: She look beautiful in her wedding dress.
Last sentence: I just wish I had longer to live.
Wow! This book was addicting! I do think maybe the characters and the storyline were a bit too simple, a bit predictable, but all the same there were a couple of surprises along the way. I am still trying to wrap my mind around the ending. I love endings that make you do a double take, and the characters of The Other Woman will definitely stay with you for quite some time. Thank you, Netgalley, for this arc.
Couldn't put it down. Very relatable characters. Is Adam like a Jekle/Hyde personality, is Pammie the conniving future mother-in-law that she seems to be, or is Emily imagining things?
This kept me reading, as I wanted to see what terrible thing Adam or Pammie would say to Emily next.
Thanks netgalley for the opportunity to try this new author.
The prologue of this book gives you a taste of how things are going to deteriorate in the coming pages; you know that it is not going to be smooth sailing for the main character, Emily. The author did an incredible job of building up tension and ratcheting up the obsessive behavior of the future mother-in-law, Pammie. Pammie is very manipulative in ways her son, Adam, doesn’t even seem to realize. Her little digs and efforts to make Emily look bad and feel bad escalate as the book goes on, and Adam places the blame on Emily.
What I didn’t like: the book is saturated with sex scenes, most of them added nothing to the story, and unfortunately, this is one of those books where the f word comes up a lot and even the name of Jesus is used like a curse word. If you don't care for books that have a lot of that element, this will be a huge disappointment.
While I had several scenarios in mind for how the book might end, I didn’t get it completely right. By the end, all the pieces fit together in a way that works, but is a bit startling.
You ever read a book and start thinking you’ve read it before? That’s how I felt about this book. It was a different locale and characters, but the premise was very much on point to something I’ve read in the past couple of years.
The writing was done wonderfully and the characters were developed, but I just couldn’t shake the deja vu feeling. I knew what was going on, but if you haven’t read anything like this premise, you’ll be completely surprised.
I know this isn’t a long review, give the book a chance. It is a captivating psychological thriller that could have you guessing at every turn.
I should have known better than to read this book, I don't like this kind of cheesy psychological thriller where the characters are trite and stereotyped, the whole point is just to make you turn pages, and the heroine is a helpless, hand wringing type, not real at all. I wanted to scream at Emily, Don't marry into that family, are about blind?!
Emily has found her happily ever after. She couldn't picture a more perfect partner than Adam. He does have one small teeny tiny little blemish though, a mother from hell.
Throughout the story Emily tries over and over to appease her future mother in-law. Nothing she does seems good enough and her mistakes are quite often pointed out with an embarrassing flourish.
When Adam offers no help Emily takes matters into her own hands. Trying to expose Pammie for the woman she truly is, the woman that she only lets Emily see.
Emily starts to regret her efforts as secrets and truths come to light. Could everything that has transpired been a spiral effect from a tragic accident years before? One thing's for sure, Pammie isn't going down without a fight.
A story that has you despising a woman who would seemingly go to any length to keep her son to herself.
I finally finished! I struggled with this one and hated that I was struggling since it was my first Net Galley book. I read straight though to 50% and then came on here to see what others were thinking. This book has so many great reviews that I was thinking I was missing something. So I carried on!
I could not connect with anyone in this book. Kept asking " why is she staying with him" There wasn't one good reason! Then comes the TWIST at the end. Seriously? Not a psychological thriller to me. Domestic mess would be my description.
I am so happy that others loved it, I really am and hope more do. Just not for me.
I was given this book by Net Galley for my honest review
Highly disappointing,, the reviews did not live up to expectation. This seems like a mother- in -law story who meddles with this couple who are set to get married. The son does not believe that the mom is capable of doing wrong towards his bride and some of the details don’t fit. There is a brother who is unlucky in love yet there is a chemistry between him and the bride. The mother-in-law is laying out traps to make the bride look crazy and you feel anger toward to the mother-in-law. I won’t spoil the ending but I felt very disappointed and left unresolved.
What an absolutely incredible psychological thriller. I was completely enthralled the entire book and could barely put it down. Sandie Jones has an incredible writing style that makes the story seem so realistic! I had goosebumps numerous times and my heart was pounding waiting to read what would happen next. I did not see the ending coming at all. I cannot wait to read more books from this author!
Emily goes out for an obligatory drink with her coworkers only to meet the man of her dreams. She quickly falls in love with Adam and everything in their relationships seems perfect. Until she meets his mother, Pammie. Pammie seems sweet as sugar to everyone else, but she is constantly taking dogs at Emily and trying to sabatogue Emily’s relationship with Adam. Emily is torn apart by Pammie’s cruelty to her and war ensues between the two. Adam continually sides with Pammie and Emily continues tries to force Adam to see his mother’s true colors. But at what cost to their relationship? It is not often that I read a book that catches me by surprise and this book took me a while to catch on. A riveting read that will stir your own emotions. I found myself getting mad at the characters for their actions!
This book had me from the beginning. I found it a quick enjoyable read. I couldn't put it down and kept wondering what would happen next. However, I would not say it was a thriller or full of twists and turns, as others have said. Emily meets the man of her dreams, Adam, but he comes with a horrendous mother, Pammie. Pammie is manipulative and will stop at nothing to keep Emily from marrying Adam. Why? We don’t know! Unfortunately, Emily is the only one who sees Pammie’s true side and very few people, Adam included, believe her when she tries to tell everyone what is happening. The book was fast paced and I never got bored, I just found the end a little rushed and maybe a tad unbelievable. When you figure it all out you can’t really go back and say, ‘Oh I get that now’, instead it was more, ‘Oh, I still don’t know why they acted that way’. Either way, I enjoyed the book and would recommend. I received a free copy from the publisher for my honest review, and here it is! Get it, read it, beg for Emily to wise up, like it!

The Other Woman

Genre: thriller, mystery, British literature

Do you have a mother in law or a monster in law? What would you do if the man you loved was a momma’s boy who couldn’t see how awful and manipulative she was? What if she would do anything to end your relationship?
Pammie is the MIL and Emily and Adam are the happy couple. Emily wants the fairytale and hopes she can get Adam to see what Pammie is doing before she causes more destruction.
I enjoyed the British setting and euphemisms. I liked that they could go to Portugal for a 4 Day Hen Party! (Of course the men went to Vegas.). I also really liked Emily’s friendship with Seb and Pippa. I just didn’t understand why Emily stayed for so long and made herself so crazy. I struggled to finish this one.
I received an advance reader copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Thank you @stmartinspress for the free copy via @netgalley in exchange for my honest review.

Emily thinks she’s found the man of her dreams when she meets Adam. He’s everything she’s wanted and more and she’s excited to see what the future might hold. Then she meets his mother. Watch out for Pammie! Everyone thinks Pammie is just so perfect, but Emily is seeing another side. The side that will do anything to keep her son to herself.

Wow. Talk about a fun mother in law. 😬 Overall, I enjoyed the storyline. There were parts that were a little slow going and to be honest, Emily kind of got on my nerves. The story did keep me interested and I didn’t guess where it was going, even though it turned out to be a little far fetched for me. I did like that every time something would happen, I found myself talking out loud to the characters telling them what they should or shouldn’t be doing! 😂

If you’re a fan of twisty thrillers, then you can pick up this book on August 21st!
I have two words about this book: BRILLIANT DEBUT.
Honestly, this book is so well written, I had to double check that it was indeed a debut novel.
If you like psychological thrillers, you need to pick this book up as soon as you can. You will be sucked in by Emily, Adam and Pammie.
There are so many little things about this book that add up to one giant twist that you will not see coming.
Its the kind of story that makes you PRAY that you never get a mother-in-law like Emily's soon-to-be. The kind that is so sweet to your face but will stab you in the back first chance she gets. But you need to keep in the back of your mind, as your hatred for Pammies conniving ways and Adam's complete ignorance grows, not everything is as it seems.
I love psychological thrillers that keep me on my toes, and riveted to the pages. This is one of those reads. I'm very excited to see what Sandie brings us next!
I was hooked on page one. Great character buildup. I loved the twist at the end. I will suggest this book to my book club.
