A weak female protagonist throughout the entire story? No thank you! This is a. story of girl falls in love, meets passive aggressive future mother in law, becomes miserable through her interactions with her & her now terrible fiancé, and continues to keep herself confined to that misery time & time again. When I keep wondering if the ending is going to redeem the mind-numbingly unbelievable plot, it’s not a good sign. I just wanted to yell at the main character Emily to run as fast as she could away from that crazy terrible family, but she stayed in time after time making herself miserable (as well as myself). Some may think that that ending was great, however I’m not in that category. The ending made me despise the characters & story even more so. I need at least one strong character in my thrillers that can rise from the ashes, not weak miserable ones that I don’t care about in the slightest the entire story. I did enjoy the best flatmate Pippa, as well as the gay bestfriend Seb, however their presence within the story is short lived.
Thank you, NetGalley, for the opportunity to read and give my honest opinion. The Other Woman is set for publication in August 2018.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced reader’s copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I absolutely loved the premise of this book and eagerly looked forward to reading it. Although I know many people liked it, the storyline and characters just didn’t draw me in. It read more like chick lit with a twist at the end.
Wow! I could not put this book down. I highly recommend this book if you're a fan of B.A. Paris, Ruth Ware, or Gillian Flynn (like me!). I can't wait to read more by Sandie Jones.
If it's not too late for you, do NOT read anything about this book before you start. I really had no idea what it was about when I sat down to read it...which only made it that much better. I was hooked from the beginning and couldn't let go.
I still can't grasp what it was that intrigued me so much. I think it was the fact that her writing flowed so eloquently, and I really felt like I was in the character's world. I even thought about them when I wasn't reading. There were times in the novel where I audibly gasped or was actually taken aback.
I could relate to the protagonist, Emily, and she was so well-developed with realistic dialogue, thoughts, and worries. Sometimes she was foolish to a fault, but aren't we all when love's involved?
*Thank you to Netgalley, St. Martin's Press, and Minotaur Books for the ARC, for which I have given an honest and unbiased review*
The Other Woman is not the book you're expecting. Sandi Jones has written an exceptional mystery that's intriguing and takes a turn when you least expect it.
Emily is our narrator who is also the victim of the crimes that are taking place in the storyline. She is easy to connect with and you do feel for her. She has two friends who are there to help her in many ways but sometimes cause problems without realizing it, Seb the gay best friend, and Pippa the flatmate. Then you have Adam who comes off as prince charming. He does show his arrogance, as well as being smug and lacking for Emily's feelings at times. His previous girlfriend Becky died of an asthmatic attack but has Emily questioning. His mother Pammie seems to play a large role in life, while little brother James, seems to be an afterthought.
The story is told in the first person. There is a good use of red herrings which make the story always more interesting and also the dramatic plot twist. The characters have some interactions but have no real growth or development throughout the story. There is not really a lot of background knowledge given about where the characters were before, or when it is given it comes in choppy context.
Yes, I would recommend this book but only to those who enjoy reading thrillers.
I could not put this one down! This took so many unexpected turns that kept me engaged the entire time. I highly recommend for anybody who enjoys thrillers!
WOW! I wasn't expecting that. Go in blindly. Your mind and the actions of the characters will have you believing in one thing and you will be floored when you realize that there is more than meets the eye in The Other Woman by Sandie Jones. This is my first read by this author and I was intrigued, captivated and this book was downright unputdownable.
When Emily met Adam she thought she had found the man of her dreams. Not realizing what came with him... his baggage—namely his mother Pammie.
His mother and her need to be in every facet of Adam's life changes the dynamic of Emily and Adam's relationship and I couldn't help but HATE Pammie. Every little thing she did seemed spiteful and mean and I just couldn't stand her.
Until the truths were revealed and whoa... I don't read a ton of psych thrillers so I didn't see this one coming.
The Other Woman is addicting and a complete surprise for a debut author. I say this because I have been let down so many times by new authors that I went into this with an open mind and was so freaking pleasantly surprised. Addictive, well-written, suspenseful and a complete page-turner.
This is an author that you do not want to miss and I look forward to reading more from her!!!
These thrillers rarely surprise me anymore, but this one did! Don't want to say more (spoilers) but if you're a fan of Ruth Ware, Riley Sager, Paula Hawkins, and Gillian Flynn, you will love this book.
This book definitely went places I wasn’t expecting! An intriguing read that will make you love/hate characters as you go, with an ending that really surprised me!
Loved this book! So few books give me a true twist at the end and this one did it. This book kept me reading into the wee hours of the night. Although, the main character got on my nerves, I enjoyed all the drama her and Pammie made.
I seem to have an opposing view on this book from many other reviewers; I give it 2.5 stars at best. First, the premise is creative as this time the 'other woman' is the mother of the boyfriend/fiance. That's a nice twist. The problem I had was the complete shallowness of the main characters; the girlfriend who continuously stays in an abusive relationship with both the man and the mother; the boyfriend who is a nasty drunk but loves his mother obsessively for unexplained reasons; the brother who, even in the end, is not fully flushed out and makes a muck of things; and the besties who stand by and don't yank poor lil Emily miles away from this man. Not even the dark and twisted ending could salvage this book for me. I hate hate hate weak, gullible, static women - protagonists like this merely perpetuate the myth of spineless women trapped in toxic relationships. Try giving us a trapped woman who gets herself out through her strength and smarts, someone to aspire to, someone to give us hope. Aargh. Thanks to Net Galley for an early copy in exchange for an honest review.
I found this story to drag. The characters were interesting.. I couldn't keep reading it. The characters seem to have a problem communicating their true feeling about the friends and family.
Great debut Sandie Jones! A disturbing, suspenseful domestic thriller. I had heard a few people talking about this book so I was intrigued. Once I started it, I couldn't put it down. Emily fell in love with Adam, but his mother was another story. Adam's mother Pammie did everything she could to get rid of Emily and stop the wedding. Emily just became more determined to overcome Pammie's maneuvers and marry Adam. The trouble was Adam just didn't see how mean his mother was being to Emily. I'm not so sure I could stay with a man so tied to his mother that he refused to see the trouble she was causing - no matter how much I loved him. It would really be hard to marry a man when you would have to put up with this witch of a woman - she's just evil.
This book had a great twist to it that I didn't see coming. It was fast-paced and well-written. I did think Emily was a really weak woman - but there are many of them around. And I didn't really care for Adam the way he had blinders on when it came to his mother. But I loved hating Pammie!
Thanks to Sandie Jones and St. Martin's Press through Netgalley for an advance copy.
I love these types of stories! Sandie Jones writes in a way that makes you eager for more! She definitely made the characters come alive... I felt as if I was right there with them. Love the story line, definitely a must read!
This book started out a little slow, but I am so glad I stuck with it! It picked up fast and then I couldn't put it down. And the ending! I never saw it coming, never suspected for a minute!
This was more chick-lit than mystery or thriller. The characters and dialogue were boring and cliched, and the plot is slow. The twist is thrown in right before the end and doesn’t do much to change my experience of the book. The best parts were the nastiness of the boyfriend’s mother; this could have been a lot better if that part was taken further and this was a comedy novel instead.
The Other Woman was exactly the type of thriller book that I love to pick up. While I thought I had everything figured out, the whole thing snuck up on me and smacked me right in the head! Emily, the main character, was likeable, but at times I didn't understand her decisions. Although, after further reflection, I feel like she was just desperate to find her true love. Adam, her fiance, was a great character because I wasn't sure if I was supposed to rot for him or not. I wasn't sure if he was an amazing or delusional fiance. And finally, his mom, Pammie (which, by the way, I have never been bothered too much by a character's name, but her name just rubbed me the wrong way every time I read it) was weird, borderline creepy. This novel did not disappoint!
The Other Woman is a book that I have been highly anticipating after reading its blurb and seeing it posted around the book world. This story and the characters immediately engrossed me. I flew through the pages, needing to know what would happen next and ended up finishing this book in less than twenty-four hours. As with every mystery and thriller I read, I had a few theories as to what was really going on or what the twist would be. By the halfway mark I really only had two theories, but the best part of this book was that BOTH my theories were wrong, which rarely happens and made me enjoy The Other Woman even more.
I voluntarily received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
All I can say is that I was highly impressed with this psychological thriller! I did not see the plot twists coming. This was very well written and held my attention so closely. It was definitely a book that I could not put down and finished it very quickly. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good psychological thriller. One of the best I have read lately!
