This book was FANTASTIC== I have many customers who are fans of psychological thrillers, and I cannot wait until this comes out so I can share it with them. Lots of twists and turns, great characters and a believeable plot as far as "mothers" go. Wonderful, and I look forward to more from this author!
I’m sure this will be another big hit, an end of summer beach book. I don’t want to say anymore because I don’t want to spoil anyone’s read. I’ll just say that I’m tired of this genre.
You’ll be hooked from the prologue! The reviews are correct! Ever date someone whose mother was a real monster? I’ve been there and some of this was eerily similar to my short lived marriage. Anyway this book is just riveting and it’s a real page turner, there’s a surprise around every corner. The main character is your typical spineless and infatuated woman but who hasn’t been this woman at some point in their lives? You won’t see the end coming unless you read some of the spoiler reviews which unfortunately someone on Netgalley posted basically the entire book, plot, and ending twists, so my suggestion is to go in blind and enjoy the ride!
Had a hard time putting this one down- one of my favorite books so far this year! Great psychological thriller. Emily meets Adam, who she quickly falls for and who seems to be her perfect man. And then she meets his mother, Pammie, who is the character in this book you will love to hate. However, things are not always what they seem- without going more into depth since I don't want to give too much away. Highly recommend!
Thank you to NetGalley who gave me the opportunity to read this ARC before it goes on sale in exchange for an honest review.
Overall I enjoyed this book. The writing is good, the voice is engaging, and I loved seeing the tug of war between future mother-in-law and future daughter-in-law. (In the interests of full disclosure, my mother-in-law is lovely, but I still like these types of stories.) I spent most of the book looking forward to watching Pammie get what was due her.
Unfortunately, I really didn't like the end. Partially, it wasn't what I was expecting, but the execution also just didn't work for me. I'm only taking off a star, because I really did like the book. But I'm not sure I'd read another book by this author unless it was recommended by someone who'd already read it.
The title of Sandie Jones debut novel does not refer to a romantic rival, but rather the much maligned, mythically evil, and butt of every comedian's joke-a mother in law. Ms. Jones takes every mother in law stereotype-domineering, critical, and believes no woman is good enough for her beloved baby boy-and plays them like a finely tuned piano. When Emily meets Adam she is certain it's true love. Their relationship is a series of dreamy dates, sensational sex and soulful heart to hearts. That is until Emily meets Adam's mother Pammie. And what a mother she is. Every comment Pammie makes is tinged with subtle negativity-what Emily eats, wears, and does for a living is fruit for Pammie's biting remarks. When Adam and Emily become engaged Pammie ups the ante-surreptitiously leaving photos of Adam's ex girlfriend Rebecca (with a note from Pammie on the back about how much she misses Rebecca) where Emily is sure to see it, and bemoaning how little time Adam spends with her since meeting Emily. That Emily flirts relentlessly with Adam's brother James, even meeting up with James at bars and restaurants without Adam's knowledge, and cringes with jealousy when James shows up with a girlfriend doesn't bother Emily-she is certain her life with Adam would be perfect if Pammie was not in the picture. The red flags Adam throws up that he's not the knight in shining armor Emily thinks-often siding with Pammie and canceling plans with Emily to be with Pammie whenever she waves her little finger- should have Emily running in the other direction, but she clings to her fairy tale with the evil mother in law as the villain. The Other Woman is that novel that nags at you-something seems off but you can't put your finger on it-and that something keeps you turning the pages. The dialogue is often uneven (almost every conversation begins with "Er...er...") and Emily is so blind (along with deaf and dumb) when it comes to Adam and his devotion to his mother the plot shouldn't work as well as it does. The defining moment of The Other Woman is when you realize Pammie is exactly what she appears to be-a mother desperately trying to stop her son from getting married. Just like the jokes say...she's a typical mother in law who'll stop at nothing to get her way.
VERY seldom do I get to the end of the book and have it COMPLETELY wrong! I truly thought this book was great! Emily (Em to her friends) meets Adam and is immediately infatuated. They eventually move in together. Her friend Pippa and her friend Seb don't think Adam is worthy of Emily and Adam does not like them. Especially Seb who even though gay, Adam seems to see as a threat. Everything seems to be going smoothly until Emily meets Pammie, Adam's mom. It seems that Pammie enjoys making Emily's life Hell. She is rude, condescending and cruel. Adam asks Emily to marry him. The night before their wedding, Pammie announces at the reception dinner that she has cancer. Adam decides to postpone the wedding. Emily eventually finds out it's not true. When she threatens to tell Adam, Pammie blackmails Emily with her own information that Adam probably wouldn't like. Then, Emily finds out she's pregnant. She has a baby she names Poppy. A few weeks after Poppy is born, at Adam's brother James' wedding, Emily catches Adam having sex with another woman outside the venue. She kicks him out but of course he wiggles his way back in. I thought I had this book figured out but in the end, I didn't have anything right. I would highly recommend this book.
WOW. I cannot believe this is a debut novel! Bravo, Sandie Jones!
We have Emily, who meets Adam and falls in love. However, she has to compete with another woman, his mother Pammie. It took me awhile to like Emily and I'm not even sure I ever did because she had no common sense. It's a battle for Adam between these two women, and there were red flags everywhere for Emily, but she was so blinded by love. You are in for a rollercoaster ride of suspense!
I won't say anymore about the plot because it's best to go into it completely blind. I did see the twist coming but it did not spoil the book for me. I stayed up way too late reading this book because I could not put it down!
Sandie Jones is an author to watch out for!!
JUST WOW!!!! This book had me shaking me head up and down; "yep, yep...my mother-in-law was a witch"! Turning pages to see the next catastrophe and then the ending!!!! You will be blown away!!!!!!!
This was a decent read, I wouldn't say I was hooked from the start, I thought it was going to be kind of predictable - it turned out not to be - and once I got into it I did find it hard to put down. I liked both main characters initially, so I was surprised when after the birth of their baby, Adam turned into a not so nice person. Emily is a likable character, and I really felt for her so much during the whole book, dealing with the mother in law from hell and being set up so badly. She manages to keep it together during many difficult situations, showing her love for Adam and her strength of character. I wasn't convinced by the fact that she kept taking him back despite his many failings as the story unfolded, however the reasons soon became apparent when we learn more of Adam later in the book. The story isn't as you'd expect it to be, and for that reason I was actually glad, it wasn't as predictable as I had first thought. However, I felt the ending was slightly rushed and a few things were brushed over, hence the 4 star rating. A good holiday read, and I thank NetGalley for the ARC of this novel.
4.5 Wildly Disturbing Stars!
The Other Woman had me hooked right from the beginning. It's crazy, disturbing, twisted, and outrageously addictive - a definite page-turner for me.
Emily and Adam start dating and appear to be madly "in love". Then enters the other woman, Pammie, Adam's mother. How far will Pammie go to get Emily out of Adam's life? Emily will soon find out! This is the type of book that if I say too much I will give it all away... in my opinion, it's better to read it with an open mind.
Kudos to Sandie Jones for introducing us to some wild and crazy characters - the kind that made me want to pull my hair out at times. Also, there were times I wanted to shout out, "what were you thinking", and maybe just add a facepalm moment just to put some sense back into them. When I have those emotions I definitely know I'm reading a well-written book! So get ready and buckle up for a crazy and twisted ride of your life! Highly recommend.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Minotaur Books for providing me with an ARC.
Expected Publication: August 21st!
Holy cow, was this book good!
First, let me just say how much this book made me appreciate my husband and all of the incredible things he does for me, how he treats me, and what a gentleman he is. Second, props to my mother-in-law for being incredible, accepting me into her family as her own, and not being a total crazy psycho. Segway into this book.... what a crazy psycho!
Emily loves Adam. Adam loves Emily. Adam loves Pammie, his mommy dearest, who doesn't love Emily so much. Drama ensues.
I have not hated a character (or two or three) so much in a really long time. The fact that I hated them so much is a testament to how well they were written by Sandie Jones. I wanted to punch Pammie in the face most of the time, smack Adam across the face, and tell Emily to grow a pair and tell them both to eat dog shit.
As I consider myself a fairly independent woman (yes, I have a husband and I love him dearly but a gal has to stand on her own two feet as well, am I right?) I could not stand Emily's reaction to Adam's ridiculous behavior. I wanted her to whip out her Beyonce attitude and tell him to fly a kite on multiple occasions. It drove me nuts how submissive she was. But I appreciated that her character was written so masterfully that I found myself getting worked up about her utter stupidity.
While the story along the way was engrossing and kept me reading to see what would happen next, the ending was totally unexpected and made me love the book even more.
Funny enough, the cover contains a quote from Greer Hendricks, author of The Wife Between Us, which happens to be the book I would compare The Other Woman to (yes, I'm ending my sentence with a preposition... judge me). I adored The Wife Between Us and adored this book just as much. Would highly recommend for anybody looking for something "un-put-downable."
-This advanced reader copy was gifted to me in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to NetGalley, Sandie Jones, and Minotaur Books for the opportunity to review.-
Crazy, page turner like no other. Totally unbelieveable.. I wasn't so sure about it in the beginning but discovered I couldn't put it down after that.
Wow! I read this book in less than a day! So well written that I was feeling so angry & frustrated with Pammie, as if everything was happening to me. I could not figure out where the story was going, but it sure ended well. Highly recommend!
Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martins Press for an ARC of The Other Woman. I wanted to like this book and my desire to see how it ends is what motivated me to finish it. However, the main character is so incredibly weak, I kept wishing she would grow some backbone in regards to her interactions with the other characters. I can't say I found the ending to be feasible and I had a lot of unanswered questions. Sorry, not one of my favorite reads!
The Other Woman was a bit of a tough read for me. I thought it dragged and I didn't care for the characters much at all.
Adam was more than a bit of a jerk, trampling all over Emily and Emily just allowed it. She rarely stood up for herself and I kept thinking what is wrong with you? Say something!
Pammie I didn't love either, but it became clear later on.
I'm not sure that I'd recommend this book, but there are a fair number of 5 star reviews, so obviously it's a good book for those folks. Check it out for yourself and see.
Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.
I gave this rating because the book is well written and is a good story. I think there was so much hype about a twist ending. It tells you on the cover that there is a twist ending. I was disappointed because you knew it was not what you expected. Sometimes less is better.
Emily meets Adam a a bar and they hit is off. However, Adams family gets in there way of happiness time and time again. You don't think that there relationship will last but it keeps going until the very end.
I recommend reading this book, the authour did a nice job yelling the story. Sometimes the story jumps around so it will take a minute to figure out what has happened but it gets back on track and explains thing fairly quickly.
I initially was extremely excited for this book. The plot really interested me and I couldn't wait to dive in. The dynamic of a girl and her boyfriends mother going at it sounded funny/ominous. For most of the book, I couldn't understand why Em would stay with her boyfriend if the mother was that terrible. I didn't really see any of those "loving" qualities in him that could make me understand why should would put up with the crazy mother. I DID totally get the need to want to "win" in this situation, especially when the rude behavior was extremely unwarranted. Each chapter kept me wanting and guessing more about how things would end. I was very happy with the ending and really enjoyed this book. It kept me interested at every turn, and the only critique I had was the fact that Adam didn't really seem like someone to fight for.
“I knew it didn’t, but nothing made sense anymore. After everything she’d done, I’d given Pammie the benefit of the doubt, and was fully prepared to put everything behind us and get through her treatment together, as a family. But this?”.......
Emily and Adam. A match made in heaven? Soul mates? Maybe, but not if “The Other Woman” has anything to say about their relationship.
Unfortunately, while planning their future it’s Adams mother, Pammie, who is planning the very worst for Emily. Emily will not be taking her son away from her if she has her way. She’s willing to go to any lengths to see that happen.
With some unexpected twists and turns, I couldn’t put this book down. Surprise ending! Love the characters. I wouldn’t wish that mother in law on anyone, or would I? Temptations, life events, manipulation from every direction. What could come between Emily and Adam?
Will they make it as a couple? Will the wedding take place? Is it worth all the trouble Pammie is causing? A riveting psychological thriller.
Thank you Sandie Jones, Netgalley, and St. Martin’s Press
Talk about a spooky mother-in-law! A very intense story that I couldn't put down. If you're looking for a 'not ordinary' romance book, this is it.
