The Other Woman is about a man, his girlfriend, and the other woman—his mother. Adam and Emily adore each other, but Adam’s mother Pammie wants nothing more than to see Emily out of her son’s life. Pammie will do anything for her son and will stop at nothing to get rid of Emily.
This was a really good book that had me hooked from the beginning. The book is full of secrets, lies, and manipulations in a delightful mix of twists and surprises with a shocking ending. Just when you think you have it all figured out, the author drops another bomb to completely throw you for a loop. The plot was excellent, the characters were intriguing, and the pace was perfect. I home the author’s next novel is just as good. I’m looking forward to it!

This book had me completely entranced the whole time. It reminded me of that Monster-In-Law movie with Jennifer Lopez and Jane Fonda a few years back where the mother-in-law was perfect in front of her loving son but an evil witch when left alone with the daughter-in-law. I don't want to give away any important details but this one threw me for a loop. Pammie is deliciously evil with her sneaky ways. Poor Emily is besides herself trying to figure out why her future mother-in-law has it in for her. She's determined to show her fiance, Adam, that is mother is a bad woman with bad intentions. Don't let this common storyline fool you. This is a book that I would definitely read again. A creative twist to the in-law dilemma.
Thank you to Netgalley, Sandie Jones, and Minotaur Books for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This novel could be the prototype for the dysfunctional family. Emily and Adam meet, date and become a couple. They frequently express their love for each other and he brings her home to meet his mother, Pammie. She is the other woman in his life and does everything in her power to separate the couple up to and including faking breast cancer. It doesn’t work and although their wedding has been postponed indefinitely Emily gets pregnant. The interaction of the characters is distressful at times and leaves the reader wondering who is the psychopath. By the time the climax occurs the reader will know. Thanks to Net Galley and Minotaur for an ARC for an honest review.
I think the Mother In Law is the scariest person in a relationship most of the time. Emily is unlucky enough that her future MIL lets her know from the beginning that she will stop at nothing to keep her away from her son. Masquerading as the sweet, innocent mother to everyone else she makes everything tough on Emily from the beginning of her relationship with Adam. When Emily starts to uncover secrets from Adam's past relationship gone wrong she's floored at what she discovers and wonders if she's strong enough to stand tough for the man she wants. . . if she decides her life is worth it.
So good......the type of book that you stay up late reading, then get up early the next morning to finish. I read it faster than I have read anything in a while. The Other Woman is the story of Emily and her relationship with Adam, the perfect guy. The only problem is Adam's mom is crazy and doing everything she can to destroy Emily and Adam's relationship. A crazy whirlwind follows.....
This book is a must read for your summer vacation!
I received this book free from NetGalley in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion.
I had not read a mystery/thriller in a while as I have been in the historical fiction kick. I enjoyed stretching my brain ad reading a different genre. That said (or written), I thoroughly enjoyed The Other Woman.
Emily finds what she thinks is the man of her dreams in Adam. What also comes with that relationship is the Banks family consisting of mom Pammie and brother James. Mom does everything to sabotage the relationship. James comes onto Emily with Adam oblivious to it all.
Even though none of these characters are fully developed, there is just enough to support the storyline and keep the pace moving This book will be out in August. Look for it for a great end of summer read.
Thank you NetGalley for an advance copy of The Other Woman in exchange for an honest opinion.
Best book I have read all year! The British author sadie Jones has become a author that i will follow. Page -turner to the very end!! A must read!! #beware of pammie is no joke.
Such a good book. I couldn’t put it down. It is a well crafted story with an unexpected ending. It does bother me when intelligent women ignore warning signs because they are “in love”. But that happens all the time in life.
Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for an ARC of this book! Release date - August 21, 2018
I’m disappointed in this book. I have been wanting a really good twisty mystery/thriller lately and based on the description and some of the other reviews I really thought this was going to be it. But sadly it was not. It read much more like chick lit than a thriller, and it’s only “fast-paced,” as the description says, because it covers so much time and jumps ahead so much, with months between chapters, not the exciting, edge of your seat, can’t stop reading feeling that you usually would think “fast-paced” means.
This book was SO unrealistic, and that usually doesn’t make me bring my rating down, because how often is fiction truly realistic? But so much of this had me rolling my eyes. Emily put up with so much from both Adam and Pammie that I was just frustrated. Why didn’t she stand up for herself or talk to Adam about her concerns like a normal committed relationship would do, or for heavens sake see the red flags and get the heck out of this crazy family?
So almost the entire book is just this, jumping ahead throughout Adam and Emily’s relationship, zooming along, his mother acting crazy. There are one or two things throughout that I'm sure the author meant as twists but they were so predictable. And the we finally get to “the big twist” in the last few chapters and I just rolled my eyes. It made the rest of the book make no sense at all. At least give us more of an explanation! But no, we are just expected to believe this randomness at face value.
Sorry to say but I’m disappointed in this. I would not classify this as a thriller because nothing thrilling happened. There was nothing scary and no creep factor at all. And while it was a little bit of mystery the twists were either predictable or made me roll my eyes. A low 3 stars for me.
Not your usual British police procedural. Rather, a riveting domestic thriller. Emily falls in love with Adam. The "other woman" is his mother Pamela (Pammie). As Adam and Emily grow closer, begin living together and get engaged, at every turn Pammie tries to drive a wedge between them, trying to drive Emily away. At first Emily thinks she herself is paranoid but as more evidence accumulates she becomes convinced that Pammie has gone over the deep end or at least is determined to wreck any chance of an ongoing relationship between Adam and Emily.
The day before the wedding Pammie announces that she has been diagnosed with advanced breast cancer so Adam cancels the wedding at the last minute to care for his mother. Adam and his brother James take turns driving Pammie for chemo. But Emily discovers that they drop Pammie off at the hospital door and return later to pick her up. She becomes suspicious that Pam's cancer and chemo are a sham. So she decides to replace Adam one day as the driver and take Pam to the hospital. Despite protests by Pam she does so. Pam will not let her accompany her to the chemo unit. Emily races around the hospital and sees Pammie entering a shopping centre. She follows her to a coffee shop within the mall and sits nearby. Ultimately Pam sees her and Emily threatens to expose her. But Pammie fights back saying that she knows Emily had been seeing James a few times and on the verge of having sex with him. Emily denies this but Pam claims she knows because James had told her. So they are at a standoff.
Emily, who is pregnant, sulks. After Emily gives birth Pammie continues her weird behavior using the baby as a pawn. Meanwhile James has warned Emily that Adam is "not what he appears to be." That becomes clear when one evening she discovers Adam having sex with a bridesmaid in the back garden at the wedding of a friend. She confronts him and returns home. What happens after reveals that Pam is not just the doting mother that she has appeared to be but rather has been trying to protect Emily from an ugly truth. (less)
Certainly a page turner and not at all what I expected it to be! Excellent writing and character development. I read it in one sitting.
When you find “the one” that you plan to spend the rest of your life with, what is often overlooked is knowing you’re not only marrying the love of your life, but you’re marrying their family and baggage too! Actually, Emily didn’t find anything out of the ordinary about the latter part of my opening statement, in fact she embraced it at first. That is until she actually met Adam’s mum, Pamela Banks, better known as Pammie. Yes, Emily Havistock loved everything about Adam. They were so perfect for each other. He made her feel like no other man had ever made her feel and she couldn’t wait to be the newest Mrs. Banks.
Oh, but wait a minute! Pammie wasn’t so sure she wanted Emily as a daughter-in-law. Why, Adam was her son and the sun rose and set upon him. There was no woman, other than herself, that was good enough for her son. And just who the hell did this Em think she was coming into Adam’s life trying to take over? Pammie did the unthinkable—just about every horrible thing you can possibly think to do to another human being. She had nothing kind to say to Emily. She constantly inserted herself into Emily and Adam’s lives. Adam was such the mama’s boy that he never saw the nasty underhanded things Pammie was doing to his girlfriend. No matter how much Emily complained, Adam wouldn’t hear of it. It liked to drove Emily insane. So much so, Pammie was pretty much about to become a deal breaker for the two love birds.
I never met a character that I wanted to bitch slap more than I wanted to Emily. I kept thinking is this woman just that thick in the head or was she crazy like a fox? I couldn’t figure out either. This novel had me speaking out in the open because I couldn’t believe how much Emily was willing to take from a woman that would soon be her mother-in-law. To make matters even worse was her boyfriend, Adam, who thought his mother was a saint and could do no wrong. He never took Emily’s side of anything, and that, to me, raised several flags, but seemed not to wave at all in front of Emily’s naïve eyes. The situation got so bad that her best friends and parents could see what Pammie was doing, but Emily kept on pressing forward trying to love Adam despite his crazy mum’s antics.
When I say the ending is one I never saw coming, would be an honest understatement. This was an outstanding read! OMG, my jaw dropped when I got to the end. Holy cow Jones wrote the hell out of this book. She wrote dysfunction at its truest form without fault or apology. She was extremely masterful at keeping the reader in quite a state of mind only to find out life has quite a few twists and turns. Wow! I loved this story! If you’re a fan of Shalini Boland’s, such as myself, of The Girl from the Sea, and the ending that was a shocker, get ready readers, because this one is going to knock you for a damn loop. Jones had me. I really enjoyed this story and it’s one that I will never forget. I love when an author can fool a seasoned reader like me. When you can do that, you’re a damn talented writer. Well done!
I received this ARC from NetGalley for an honest review. I really enjoyed this book. The story deals with mental illness and we are not really sure which character is not stable until the very end. There are many twists and turns and surprises that keep the reader in suspense . The story is about a couple who is engaged to be married and a very sadistic, evil mother trying to break them up . At first , I was amused by the tactics to separate the couple . Then, when there was a death, that all changed. I liked the author ‘s style of writing and would definitely recommend this book.
Woah! The tension in The Other Woman built and built, and then the ending blew me away. I definitely did not see it coming. I have been going back through the book in my mind trying go figure out what clues I missed. The characters were well-developed. I really did not like Adam and at times was frustrated with Emily for staying with him so long. The Other Woman would make a great movie!
What an incredible story! I was absolutely stunned by the ending! No spoilers, however, you must read this book! I have never begged Netgalley for a book, yet I did for this one! It was worth it, and more! It will be in my top 25 for 2018 on my blog! The thing that is so powerful is, a lot of young women have Mother in laws just like this one, controlling, making the son choose between her, and his wife! The commonality is what brings this book to hit home, obviously not as bad, still on the same level of anger, frustration with the guy, why won't he stand up to his Mother? Maybe I shouldn't marry him, he will never choose me over her, it's very difficult to start life as two separate people trying to grow together as one, with a possessive Mother hanging on to her son, whom she knows will choose her! Your boyfriend, all the way up to the Wedding, and beyond treating a forty four year old woman like she is right, becoming angry with you, for not understanding! This is a truly good piece of literature, I am looking forward to more books by this Author! My heart is still pounding!
I highly recommend! Thank you!

I kept picking this book up, reading a bit and getting annoyed and putting it down. each time I said it would be the last time until I got to the 25% point and wondered why I was wasting my time. Done, no more for me.
Emily meets the "man of her dreams" and all is well until she makes a joking comment about his mum. It goes downhill from there. Actually meeting her and having to deal with her was just too much. I wanted to grab Emily and tell her to run. The mum is creepy, Adam, AKA Mr Wonderful, is a huge mama's boy and mama wants to keep it that way. She will stop at nothing to keep him. Emily doesn't stand a chance.
Thanks NetGalley for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
Super fast paced and amazing character building! Full of well written psychological suspense and lots of twists and turns to keep you guessing! One of my top reads for 2018.
I'm always excited to discover a debut novel that keeps me up at night, burning through pages to reach the end. The Other Woman certainly did that with an air of impending doom surrounding the heroine, Emily. I knew it was just a matter of time before everything hit the fan as this gripping story unfolded.
Emily and Adam meet in a bar and are immediately in lust and soon after "in love". Emily has finally met her prince, and now she's meeting his perfect mother, Pammie - a woman who does no wrong in his eyes. Emily is nervous, but ready . . . she thinks. It quickly becomes obvious that Pammie isn't ready to share Adam's affections with another woman. Her devious actions undermine Emily at every turn, even as she presents a sweeter than sugar persona to Adam and everyone else. When things take a malicious turn, the question becomes . . . Is Pammie dangerous? How far will she go to keep Emily and her son apart?
The Other Woman is an intense, engaging, medium paced read told through Emily's point of view. Readers have a front row seat to what's happening to Emily both physically and mentally. She's a perfect spokesperson for the old saying "Love is Blind" and still, I was sympathetic to her plight. The author does a great job weaving the plot and enhancing it with a varied cast of support characters. I will say I suspected the main twist way too soon and while the delivery of the story had me flipping pages and freaking out early on, the ending left me feeling a bit disappointed and wanting something more. In spite of that, The Other Woman is a gripping debut thriller that I enjoyed reading. I'm looking forward to more from Jones. Avoid all spoilers and settle in with this Must Read!
Once again another book made me so angry I almost didn’t finish the story. I’m glad once again I did. I have to say I did not guess the ending. Pammie was such a nasty women and you could guess what she was up to, or could you? Emily was sucked in to Adams life and made to believe this was a match made in heaven, until it wasn’t. I’m happy with the ending but it took awhile to get there, it was worth the read.
Emily finally meets the man of her dreams, and they fall in love quickly. Their relationship moves very quickly and suddenly its time to meet Adam’s mother. It starts off well enough but soon enough we find out she is the only person who will do anything it takes to keep them apart. But why doesn’t she want them together?
This book is so addicting, I just couldn’t wait to see what Pammie would be up to next to get under Emily’s skin. I definitely hated Pammie, but I loved to hate her and she never failed to surprise me with all the ways that she tried to make Emily leave her son. I really found I could relate to Emily and felt frustrated at the lengths to which Pammie would go and how no one else could see what is going on, especially her son! We really just barely get to know most of the characters, but in this novel that totally works. I did really enjoy the friends that Emily had in this novel, even if they don’t play a huge role in the novel.
There are a few different unlikeable characters in this book and I thought I knew who I disliked and why. But ¾ of the way through, I started to dislike another character and I was absolutely shocked by the ending! I really didn’t see it coming and it was an amazing turn of events! I really enjoyed the idea behind this book and I actually felt bad for the hate that I felt against one of the characters. Definitely add this to your must reads for 2018! It’s a twisty psychology suspense that keeps you tense the whole time! This book kept me hooked throughout the whole thing and I read it in one evening because you just need to know where this is going.
