Brynn has gone from the prosecution side to the defense side of the courtroom. She is lead on a case when one of her last cases as a prosecutor comes back to haunt her. The defendant in the case, a vicious serial killer has escaped jail and is out for revenge. Brynns law firm hires security for Brynn after the lead attorney that prosecuted the case with her is murdered. Erik is head of the security team assigned to protect Brynn.
This is a good romantic suspense read. The story is told from several points of view, Brynns, her bodyguard and the detectives tracking the escaped killer. This is the first book in a new series but a character from her Tracers series makes an appearance. This story leans more on the suspense angle rather than action, alto there are some tense action filled scenes. There is a twist at the end of the story that caught me completely off guard. I recommend this book for readers of mystery or romantic suspense.
This was really prob more of a 2.5 for me but I’m rounding up for the conclusion. I admit when I started this I was concerned by the number of characters that are introduced in just the first chapter! I also didn’t love all the brand name dropping in the beginning (I get it, she’s successful).
When the second chapter starts with our narrator eye humping the security team which she is hiring because her life’s in danger I was about to throw in the towel. One mention of rugged and handsome men would have been ok but “slightly dazed by all the testosterone, these guys were seriously jacked” seems ridiculous in this situation. I prevailed though and I’m glad I did.
The story does evolve well. The characters become fleshed out and the romance does hold off realistically for a while.
Some reviews didn’t care for the twist but I thought it was pretty clever and tied up things nicely. Overall, I would recommend this book with a caution to ride out a few chapters and get into the meat of the story.
Thanks to NetGalley, the author, and Gallery Threshold, Pocket Books for a copy in exchange for a review.
A new series from one of my favorite authors....how can I not like it?! This book had the feel of the Tracers series but the main characters weren't directly in law enforcement/crime analyst jobs. I liked Brynn as a lead character. She was a strong woman that seemed to be able to cope with each new twist. The chemistry between Brynn and Erik was strong from their first meeting. They seemed to fit well together. The secondary characters were interesting and intriguing. I hope they make appearances in future stories. There were plenty of twists and turns plus a big surprise at the end. I enjoyed the story very much and would fully recommend. I received an advance copy from the publisher for an honest review.
My only complaint with this book is that the title doesn’t really seem to make sense, or fit with the book. But it got my attention, so I guess it works.
I loved how authentic this book felt. Granted I’ve never been in the CJ system in any capacity shown here, but it still felt pretty real to me.
Laura Griffin does a fabulous job of completely engrossing you in the story, and I found myself fighting my inner Nerd to just put it down and go to sleep!
This book isn’t out until August 7th, but I sincerely hope you all preorder, or pick it up when it’s live!
I don't think I'll ever have to worry about disliking a Laura Griffin book. She has once again written an excellent novel full of romance and suspense that had me hooked from the start.
Desperate Girls is the first book in the new Wolfe Security series.
Brynn Holloran is a defense attorney in the midst of an important trial when a fellow lawyer is murdered. The suspected murderer is someone she helped prosecute when she was an assistant DA and he's started a killing spree of all those involved. As a result, her boss puts her and a colleague under the protection of Wolfe Security. Naturally, Brynn is resistant to the idea and fights the bodyguards every step of the way.
Brynn's main bodyguard is Erik Morgan - a former Marine and Secret Service agent.
While Brynn is headstrong, Erik is stubborn and damn good at his job so no matter how evasive or argumentative Brynn is he's one step ahead of her. And the chemistry between them is off the charts!
As expected, I loved Erik. He's sexy, strong and very protective - much like Liam Wolfe from Shadow Fall.
I can't say the final twist was a huge shock for me - I had my suspicions about a certain characters involvement but I was still surprised at how everything played out.
I'm really looking forward to the next installment of this series!
Very good romantic suspense. I usually read Thrillers or Historic fiction. Now I think I might have been missing out on some good reading. The main characters are very likeabe and l think the tension between the two was just right. Take this book wherever your going or not going, this is a perfect read for anyplace.
This is a new to me author and I will definitely read more by her. I really enjoyed this story line. I liked the different points of view with everything that was going on; it added so much to the story and my ability to get a handle on what was happening. I was so piqued by the story I had to just keep reading to find out what happens. That twist at the end was great! I love a good twist! I also really liked the dynamic between Brynn & Erik as it seemed very realistic between a strong female attorney and an alpha bodyguard. They had great chemistry an there were some hot scenes between them. All in all this book had just the right blend of everything I love in a romantic suspense.
Thank you to Netgalley for the ARC of this book.
I received this book for free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
Desperate Girls is a new romantic suspense novel by author Laura Griffin. Romantic suspense is my jam and Laura’s Tracer series is how I was first introduced to her. I love the series; she never fails to deliver a perfectly gritty romantic thriller. The heroines are always smart and engaging and the heroes capable of handling any action thrown their way. While this novel is not part of the Tracer’s series, there is a small character tie-in and this would fit perfectly within that series.
The heroine, Brynn Holloran, drew me in from the very beginning. She’s smart and career-orientated and is resistant to the restrictions of having a bodyguard, and I don’t blame her for that at all – it’s very restrictive! The hero, Erik Morgan, is also very career-driven and he’s less than sympathetic to Brynn’s feeling hemmed in by having a bodyguard and the way it impinges on her ability to do her job. It actually took me awhile to warm up to him because I thought he was a bit of a jerk to Brynn initially. Brynn has a very strong personality, she’s smart and very good at her job, and she’s not one to back down when she wants something – some people don’t like women like that but it was something I really enjoyed about Brynn.
I found the mystery to be very interesting and clever, from the very beginning the cops know who is doing it and why, but the twist at the end wasn’t really foreshadowed until chapter 27 and was quite the surprise. However, because of the late foreshadowing and introduction of it, it did seem a bit abrupt and you don’t really get much time to sit with it before *bam* the story ends.
The story does a good job of keeping the suspense up, never knowing when the next attack is going to happen or who will be targeted. I also liked following the case that Brynn is defending and seeing that story play out, it was also very tense as both sides score some points and you’re never quite sure how the case will go.
All in all this was another wonderful romantic suspense story and I was sorry to have that story come to an end. I hope we get to see a bit more of Brynn and Erik in a future story, it’s one reason I like interconnected stories!
Loved this book! There was a lot of action and intrigue with a bit of romance thrown in. There was even a cameo from the Delphi Center. Brynn was a tough, self assured lawyer and Erik was the focused bodyguard. Sparks flew almost from the beginning and they held it in check for a while, but when they gave in, phew, it was hot. There was a bit of a twist at the end that caught me off guard but that is what makes the books by Laura Griffin so good. I will read anything she writes because there is never a bad book. Can’t wait to see what comes next.
This was a great thriller, full of twists and turns. It was slow in some parts, but overall I enjoyed it.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own
Book 1 in a new series and I am on board! Thank you Netgalley and Gallery Books. Tough minded, independent sassy woman - check. Macho silent alpha male - check. Mystery, crime, intrigue, steamy, all check! I really enjoyed Brynn, I thought she was relatable in so many ways. Erik was so stealth, body guard mode it was hard to see the human side. Then we met Lindsay, a smart cop who starts putting together pieces of the puzzle. I think we might see here in this series on down the road as a main character :) Surprisingly I enjoyed the court room scenes, they were done on a human level, not all legalize. This was a taut, well written romantic suspense with major twist towards the end.
All thoughts an opinions are my own, as well as spelling errors. I requested this arc and volunteered to review.
This book had it all. I absolutely loved the mystery, suspense & romance this book delivered. It’s been a while since I read any Laura Griffin books & boy do I need to catch up! I forgot how good of a tale she could weave & how hard it is for me to put her books down.
I loved this novel filled with crimes, mystery and romance! It is fast paced and loaded with revenge plots and twists! The end is a killer!
I am now looking for other books by Laura Griffin to read and enjoy!
I received and ARC of this book, through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is my first book to be read by this author and certainly won’t be the last! First I will say that editing is my major pet peeve for published books, but often when we get ARCs they are still unfinalized, so I have to overlook spelling or grammar errors. This book is stated as an unfinalized copy, but to my unpro eye, it still had less than a handful of mistakes. KUDOS!
I went into this book thinking it was going to be more of a romance with some suspense, not sure why I thought that, my bad, but it’s actually the opposite. So, if you go into it knowing that it is an amazing suspenseful law drama, with a hot slooowwww burn relatonship that may not work out, then you are in for a treat. The storyline flows, is believable, strong characters, plot changes, surprises all that you could ask for really.
I very highly recommend this book and look forward to more reads by this author!
Excitment, suspensful, twists and hot sex make for a book you don't want to put down. Laura did an amazing job on this book.
Defense Attorney Brynn Holloran hires a private security firm for protection when a murderer she once helped prosecute resurfaces and starts a killing spree . I loved this book ! This was gloriously well written , a blend of vengeance , mystery , passion and murder . I highly recommend this book ! Thanks to #Netgalley #GalleryBooks , #Threshold , #PocketBooks #DesperateGirls
Brynn, a young lawyer, becomes involved in a situation endangering her life. A serial killer, that she had prosecuted years ago, has escaped prison and it appears that her name is on his ‘revenge list’.
She currently happens to be in the midst of an important trial. A security firm is employed for Brynn’s protection and that of a coworker. At first, Brynn resists the help of her bodyguard, Erik, and the security firm. Eventually she comes to understand the seriousness of her predicament and the danger she is in. She becomes close to Erik. Brynn comes to the realization that the serial killings appear to be done by more than one person. This makes for an interesting twist at the end of the book.
If you like mystery, suspense, and romance, this book is for you.
this is a very good suspense story, if you like suspense you will like the book, there are adult words and situations but the story is very good, I could not put the book down till the end. it is full of twits and turns, you think you know who did it then it takes another turn,
Brynn was a former ADA now she is a defense attorney. She has been getting threatening notes but police believe it’s nothing. Until a judge who was the prosecuting attorney against a killer and rapist. Then a former cop that worked the case is killed and Brynn’s boss hires security for Brynn and her second chair Ross. He hires Wolfe Security, the best in the private sector. Erick is former military and secret service but is team leader of one of the groups protecting Brynn. She’s not happy being followed around but she has a strange attraction to Erick. But Erick has rules he follows.. no distractions, no alcohol, and no caffeine. He breaks the first rule when he can’t stay away from Brynn.
While Brynn is trying to get her client freed, the killer is closing in and makes several attempts at getting to Brynn. Her partner Ross gets stabbed and her other bodyguard gets his face cut open. Some interesting information comes to light, will Brynn get it to the authorities before a killer gets her?
Honestly excellent story. Full of twists and turns, suspense and shockers. Action paction with a couple of sexy scenes. I read it in one day. I really didn’t think it would be this good but WOW!!!! A must read.
This is a difficult book to categorize, is it a thriller, police procedural, or modern day love story? Or is it a great combination of all the above? Well I cast my vote for the latter. I was fully connected to the story from the first chapter until the last. I followed along closely and was still surprised at who ended up as one of the bad guys.
I have rated this book 4 stars and would recommend it to anyone else who likes any of the three mentioned categories.
I received an ARC from Netgalley for my unbiased opinion.
