"Guess Who" starts off interestingly enough, a bunch of people locked in a hotel room. One of them is a killer and a detective TV show host must figure out who it is or else they all die.
Okay, but for something that sounds like it comes right out of a movie, I felt like it really dragged in spots. And maybe part of this is my fault since it took me forever to read this. But it would hold my attention with a chapter cliffhanger or two and then next thing I knew, I would be picking up some other book. Maybe if I had read this in one or two sittings, I wouldn't be so critical of the pacing.
I wasn't held much by the unoriginality and also, I figured out the "who dunnit" as soon as the introduced the character. That kind of ruins the fun for me and I just all the suddenly just want the book to "move on with it"
I absolutely love the plot line of this book. It was like Saw but without all the gruesomeness. It also reminded me a little of Criminal Minds. It took me roughly a week to read it and I didn't want to put it down. It was so good and I just had to know what happened next. There were jaw dropping moments but there were also 'I knew that was going to happen' moments. But even those moments had elements that I didn't even think of. Even thought the book was great for the most part, I feel as though it ended abruptly - like the author had a deadline to meet and had to hurry up and finish the book. I was very disappointed and let down with how it ended.
Meh...I was a little disappointed by this book. The synopsis sounded so engaging to me I had to give it a try. The story centers around a man known as a TV detective and whether or not he really is who he portrays to be. I had high hopes when I started the book, but it just never quite became what I anticipated. I will say, it did read quickly because I wanted to know what would happen, but I just felt like it fell short of what was promised.

Guess Who is a title that I have had for months, but just recently decided to read. I love playing detective when reading murder mystery novels and I saw that this one was classified as a whodunit mystery, meaning one that the reader can figure out. While reading I tried really hard to figure the mystery out, but I didn’t guess correctly. Guess Who reminded me of the Saw movies. A celebrity detective, Morgan Sheppard, and 5 other people were locked in a hotel room with a dead body and Morgan Sheppard was given three hours to figure out who the murderer was. As clues were uncovered and ties to the victim were questioned I found myself more and more captivated with this story. This is a fabulous debut for Chris McGeorge.
The characters were pretty interesting. Morgan Sheppard was a very morally grey character, which I love to read about. He had a love of fame and didn’t really care who he stepped on to get it. He was extremely flawed and a well written character, even if I found myself not liking him all the time, I did relate to him because he was so imperfect, so human. The story also included flashbacks to his past, which really helped with character development and a few clues to the mystery as well.
The plot was really riveting. I loved the way everything was laid out and I played detective while reading, highlighting and taking notes on parts that I thought could be clues. I actually wound up highlighting a big clue that I didn’t see for everything that it was. I was so disappointed that I didn’t solve it once I realized that the answer was right under my nose. Guess Who was a lot of fun to read and try to solve. I haven’t read a ton of whodunit mysteries, as I have focused more on psychological thrillers and cozy mysteries lately, but with this introduction to the genre I would love to explore it further in the future.
If you love to play Sherlock Holmes while reading mysteries I would highly recommend reading this book. It started off feeling a bit like Saw, but is certainly more of a mystery than a horror novel. The morally questionable lead character and a mystery that could actually be solved if you pay close enough attention really made this book stand out in the mystery genre. I had a lot of fun reading this novel and can’t wait to see what Chris McGeorge will write next.
Twists and turns that will have you on the edge of your seat. A fascinating and compelling thriller the twill keep you turning the pages and may even keep you awake at night.
A real "whodunit!" A celebrity detective wakes up handcuffed to a bed in a locked room - and there's a body in a bathroom. There are others in the room waking up to the same scene. This celebrity detective must now figure out who killed the man in the bathroom or he, along with everyone else, will be killed. Can he prove he has what it takes to solve the crime?
Guess Who had just enough twists and turns to keep my on my toes throughout the book! A great debut novel.
I was very intrigued by the situational tensions of this concept, but I didn't buy any of the characters. It is not groundbreaking in plot, but I think that it will be an easy summer read for a lot of people. It is good that it came out before several titles of very similar concepts. It will be the one that people compare escape-room claustrophobic thrillers to.
Guess Who exceeded my expectations. If you like psychological thrillers, you will love this book. It was much different from any other mystery I have very read. I was continually surprised by the twists and turns.
The book was well written with well-developed characters. It held my interest throughout the book.
I received this galley from NetGalley.
Oooh, this was a fun one! Truly intriguing premise. Guess who will keep you guessing until the end!
A murder puzzle. Three hours or they all die. Six people locked in a hotel room. Morgan Sheppard and five others, Alan, Mandy, Constance, Ryan and a young girl referred to as Headphones. These are all complete strangers to Morgan, the Resident Detective on a popular TV show, yet he has the unenviable task of solving the murder of a dead man in the bathroom before time runs out.
It doesn’t take Sheppard long to discover that he is the real target. What’s more is that there appears to be no method of escape. Furthermore, if Sheppard does not correctly identify to murderer, the entire hotel is rigged with explosives.
The story is told in two time frames, presently as Sheppard must interview each of the five others, and snippets of his past. During these snippets we learn how Sheppard became the man that he is. Everyone has their own suspicions, creating massive distrust and ultimate danger.
While I was quite invested in the intrigue that was developed here, unfortunately things became a bit implausible, and this knocked things down for me. I do applaud the creativity that the author employed in this story, so I definitely was eager to identify the killer. If you enjoy Agatha Christie type novels, with edge of a thriller, then Guess Who might just appeal to you.
Many thanks to Hanover Square Press and to NetGalley for this ARC. This is my honest opinion.
If you enjoy MJ Alridge's Helen Grace series (book one is (Eeny Meeny), then you will like Guess Who. There's a touch of saw mixed with an escape room vibe (they are after all locked in a room with a dead body). There were some good twists and over all I liked the pacing of the novel. although the ending did drag a little for me. Overall though a good thriller with the right amount of darkness.
Intense psychological thriller. The author throws together a bunch of very different personalities like ingredients in a stew, turns on the heat, and watch (read) out! You are spoon-fed information about the characters as they interact, and it is a race to find out whodunit. Superbly written, engaging from the beginning. A wonderful read!
This book reminds me of somewhat of a Saw movie. I love psychological thrillers. This is a fast paced, tense and addictive read that has you racing to find out who the killer may be, is an interesting ride! From beginning to end it held my addition.
This is one of the best crime novel, I have read lately. If you love twist and turn then give this book a try. I wasn't disappointedI. It is literally like a game of Guess Who but with blood and death and destruction and a hotel room you just can’t escape from – all the suspects are there along with a dead body and all they have to do is work out which of them is a killer. Simple. Or not…
AWESOMEEEEE read!! Highly intriguing and literally kept me guessing the whole time. I was really impressed by this author. This was the first novel I have read from Chris McGeorge and I want to read more! I recommend this one big time.
This was not the best, not the worst. I wasn't blown away by the story. Had the potential to be really great but got bogged down with an unlikable main character.
I loved this book. I am a big fan of "locked room mysteries" and this had a lot of those elements. I highly recommend this book!

This was the perfect horrifying Halloween read!
The tagline for this book is "One room. Five suspects. Three hours to find a killer." And it is truly that simple.
When Morgan Sheppard wakes up handcuffed and locked in a hotel room with five other people, he has no idea why he is there. But when they discover the dead body in the bathtub, he really starts freaking out.
In the vein of the Saw series, a masked man appears on the hotel TV and notifies Morgan that he has three hours to uncover which of his five hotel-mates is the killer. Succeed and be freed. Fail and the hotel will be blown up, killing everybody inside.
The real success of this book was in Chris George's writing style. His perfectly time use of cliffhangers regularly throughout the story gave the reader an appropriate amount of tension. I honestly didn't want to stop reading because I couldn't wait to see what happened next. The characters were developed well and differentiated. And I appreciated the author's use of past and present to bring the story together.
The only reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is because I felt like the story got kind of convoluted toward the end, and the ending seemed a little bit dragged out. Whereas the rest of the book had that fast paced style, the ending felt a little clunky as the author tried to tie up all the loose ends which were still yet to be addressed.
Fans of the Saw series looking for a fast paced and "messed up" read will love this book. I sure did.
-I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to NetGalley, Chris McGeorge, and Hanover Square Press for the opportunity to review.-
I thought the premise was really interesting and I was excited to get an advance reader’s copy of the book. I found the pace a little slow, and the main character a little boring and hard to root for.
Halfway through my interested was piqued but I found that there were too many new elements added to make this simple premise work for me.
This book took me 3.5 hours to read.
This book is way too boring. It just about put me to sleep each time that I picked it up. Too long winded. Long stretches without anything interesting going on. I doubt that I will read anything else by this author.
I like a good locked room story. This was good enough to hold my attention, but not great. A man (who turns out to be not very likable) wakes up in a room with others (some of whom are just as unlikable). The author has managed to capture the feeling of disorientation as the unconscious room inhabitants slowly awake to the realization that they are locked in a room together, with no escape, and a dead body in the bathroom. As other readers have mentioned, the book drags on a bit in the beginning and I just wanted to race ahead to see if something would happen. The action definitely picks up toward the middle, but then there is a flashback that feels as if it's written by an entirely different author, or perhaps was the way the author originally intended to begin the story. It was pretty easy to guess who the captor was based on some foreshadowing, but the ending was different enough (no spoilers) to make the time invested reading worthwhile.
