This was a bit more juvenile than I was expecting. The author did an okay job with setup, but I do wish for more explanations on some plot points.
I really enjoyed this read. There were twists and turns and I was thoroughly entertained. I highly recommend… if you like that sort of thing. ;)
I wasn't quite connecting with this one and I had to DNF with the possibility of picking up in the future. Thank you for the opportunity to read the book and I apologize for the inconvenience.
DNF at 25%. It's been over four years since I received this ARC. I gave it a go and have decided it is not for me. It interested me then and no longer does now.
This YA was not interesting to me anymore. I would've loved to give this a smashing review as the cover art is phenomenal. Thank you for the early access though!
3,5 stars!
The promise of this book was so good that I just couldn't Not request it when I came across it on NG, because I mean > Phoenixes! I was super stoked about getting an e-arc and started this book really hopeful.
In the end, it turned out to not be entirely what I was expecting unfortunately and I give it a rating of 3 stars; It had some good parts, but it also had some weaker parts that counteracts eachother.
I thought that he world building started off a bit chaotic, which made it hard to form a world in my head at first, you know? But as you get along further in the book, this thankfully did get better and in general I ended up really loving the setup of this world; it was quite unique! Learning about the Light and Dark Phoenixes was super interested and I'd definitely still want to read more about it.
The book has quite a lot of typical YA elements, which isn't necesseraly a bad thing but it's also something that has me just 'meh'; girl doesn't know about gifts and boy she meeds and whom rescues her knows more about it. It's nothing special in that sense so that was a bit of a bummer for me.
Said boy though, Wyatt.... HE IS PRECIOUS. He was a story elemente I reaaally loved haha. He's kind of a hot nerd which always makes me think of Henry Cavill as Clark Kent, lol, and that always has me instantly swooning.
Ava was a likeable character in general, but she wasn't as loveable as I hoped for. There were definitely some things about her that I felt a bit agitated with. And connecting with the MC is truly important to me so I'm always sad when that doesn't entirely live up to its expectations.
What I did truly like was the forming friendships and the focus on some family relationships as well. I always love it when there's a focus on things like that in a book.
Overall:
It was a good read with pro's and cons and I'll probably pick up the next installment in the future because I'm still curious to see how it all continues. If you're looking for a fun and fastpaced read, this definitely might be what you're looking for so if the synopsis looks interesting I'd say 'go for it'!
After bouncing around between different foster care Ava eventually begins to have memories of previous lives. It turns out Ava is something called a Phoenix. A mythical being charged with ridding the world of monsters. The memory flashes can be a little confusing as well as all the different POV but eventually, you get kind of just to them. I enjoyed the fast pace of the book as well as the romance and character development. Can't wait to see what the next book brings.
I wanted to like this more than I did. The story started off confusing and slow but it picked up as I kept going. I was determined to read this so I pushed on. Normally I would have DNFd a book I struggled with so early on but something told me to keep going.
The concept of this one is what stood out the most to me: phoenixes have special powers that allow them to figure other creatures like werewolves and vampires. I've never read a book where all of these mythical creatures were featured.
I am intrigued enough to continue with the series as I need to know what happens.
Great settings and high doses of adventure. A good start to the series. I recommend it to every fantasy fan.
Okay, okay. This is my first time reading a book with multiple POV and that somehow does not confuse me at all, in fact, it makes me excited to read even more. Can I say that I love this series? I love the adventure, the characters, the setting everything of this book - i love love it.
It was an enjoyable reading that makes looking forward to next in the series.
Phoenix Fire is the first book in the Phoenix Cycle series by S.D. Grimm. You don't see many Phoenixes in fiction, at least not as main characters, and I really loved that they were front and center in this book. I only know the basics of their mythology, and I love how they were completely brought to life in the present day. The character's each had a history too, and we got to know them quite well as memories of their past lives resurfaced. They were each a part of a larger puzzle, and it was an adventure in itself as all the pieces started to come together. There were a few surprises thrown in too. I'm very excited about this series, and I can't wait to see how it all unfolds in the upcoming books.
I am not even sure where to start with this review. Let me start by saying PHOENIX !!!! This is the first book I have ever read that focused on the phoenix and I thought S.D Grimm did a good job developing a story off of the phoenix and creating this whole world and backstory for the Phoenix and their purpose in our world. Now let me also say that the phoenix was not the only mythical creature that made an appearance.
I don't want to say much about the phoenix incorporation or backstory because you learn more throughout the whole story alongside the characters, but the whole idea of rebirth and past lives has always intrigued me. Grimm was able to slowly reveal the story and have the characters put in together piece by piece with such great detail and thought. The story was complex and had a lot of moving pieces for awhile that I was pulled even deeper in trying to figure out what had happened, what was happening and what was going to be the result.
I am not usually a huge fan of multiple POV but thought it worked so well for how this story was being told and in putting together all the pieces. Each of the characters had their strengths and weaknesses. There were quite a few times I found myself screaming at Ava and the choices she made. All the different interactions and relationships really added to the story.
Overall I enjoyed this story and the way it was written. It had me on the edge of my seat at times and had me yelling at characters at other times. I loved the fact that it revolved around the idea of this Phoenix community and would love to see more books incorporate the idea of phoenix. The world building and background development were well though out and I didn't feel like I had a lot of questions that went unanswered which is always a plus. Grimm balanced the characters and multiple POVs so well and really drove the story forward at a nice pace. I would highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys paranormal reads or wants to experience an interesting novel containing phoenix!
Ava, a foster teenager, is trying to discover who she really is after meeting her brothers Nick and Cade for the first time. Their meeting ignites a chain of events revealing her families legacy as a Phoenix. Once they die, they are reborn and being the cycle all over again. The idea of the story is well-thought out. Execution, though, needed a little help.
With multiple narrators, it can get confusing quickly depending on the novel's pace. Since this one was rather quick, I got a bit tangled up in constant switching of the narrators. It forced me to go back and re-read several passages in order to catch up. If this can be corrected in the future, this series definitely has a chance.
I tried several times to read this book but could not get past the first few chapter. It’s wasn’t about the writing style, the story just wasn’t something that peaked my interest. I will give four stars because I do believe that the talent was there, the story just wasn’t one for me. (:
4.5 Stars
'Phoenix Fire' was an exciting and fresh first novel in a new young adult fantasy series with lots of mythology and romance mixed in for good measure. I wasn't sure what to expect when I started reading, but I definitely made the right choice in choosing it. The idea of Phoenixes and the surrounding mythology drew me in from the beginning and I completely lost myself in the world the author created until I had finished the entire novel. I actually really liked every aspect of the book, which is pretty rare - at least for me. The main characters were interesting and realistic, and I enjoyed getting to know each of them throughout the story. Since they had long histories and lifetimes along with memories and emotions from them all, I loved seeing everything that happened through their eyes. So many stories and so much heartbreak. I'm really excited to get to know each of them better in the coming novels.
The Phoenix mythology was fascinating and I couldn't get enough. I loved learning everything the author told us about them - their history, the war, their powers and purposes, and everything in between. I could have read so much more about the Phoenix race and I really really hope we get a deeper look in the next installment. The plot was fresh and drew me in from the very beginning. I ended up reading the entire novel in a matter of hours and didn't want it to end. I'm already excited for the next book and I highly recommend this to fans of YA fantasy, supernatural, mythology, and romance.
What would you do if you lived over and over again? As a Phoenix, Ava gets to do just that. Adopted and living with a bit of a chip on her shoulder, Ava is shocked to experience memoirs that tell the story of someone else’s life. Or is it her life?
Cade faces paralyzing headaches when he remembers, though his brother Nick is there to help him.
When circumstances and so much more bring them together, Ava faces a life she never dreamed of and a task that seems impossible. Wyatt is just one such complication, or is he more than that?
I enjoyed the concept of this book in the creativity of using Phoenix’s (something I haven’t personally read about aside from in Harry Potter of course!). I found that keeping the memories as well as the current events straight was a little challenging. There’s a lot going on in this book - something I really appreciated - but it was also rather complex.
One thing I will note is the fact that I didn’t really believe the villain as much as I would have liked to. She was evil but I couldn’t help but feel like I wanted to know more of why she was so terrible. In that respect, she fell flat for me.
If you enjoy urban fantasy and a complex plot filled with twists and turns, you may really enjoy this book! I do believe it’s a trilogy, but this first book doesn’t leave you ok too much of a cliffhanger which I appreciated.
My rating: 3.5*
I enjoyed this book. My first time reading this author but enjoyed the story and looking forward to the next in the series. I wanted to thank NetGalley for providing the ereader copy for me to review and read!
A well written book with an interesting premise. I was hooked from the start, and couldn't put it down. I highly recommend this book!
Ava is a young girl that remebers flashes of her past lives, because she is what the author calls a phoenix. the more the story advances, the more she remeber and the more she know what her mission is so she can finally save her friends. Even tought the story is not bad, i could not get completly into it... I cannot point exactly what I didn't like, maybe the writing style, i just cannot identify what, but it was missing a little Something.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review from netgalley.
Ok so I did not finish this book, it took me 2 weeks to make it halfway, but I just couldn't find it in me to continue. Honestly this is one of the most interesting and original YA concepts I've come across and I did like the three POV style of writing, I think the author did a great job of giving each character's POV a distinct voice but that's all I can seem to like about this book. The story was so dragged out and slow paced and the main characters were boring and there was no emotional connection to any of them. Half of this book was told in flashbacks which is supposed to help us piece together what happened to out main characters in the past but these flashbacks were so vague and cut up and had absolutely no order to them that it was hard to not only keep up with the story but hard to figure out what was happening as you read.
