This is not the first and definitely not the last book by Jus Accardo that I've read. Once again I was drawn in by the imaginative and well written story that kept me turning the pages till somehow the last one was turned far too soon.
Being the daughter of an alpha is not eyactly a ride in the park but, let's be honest, being an alpha's son isn't exactly the stuff dreams are made of either. Okay, nightmares perhaps, especially when your father is the father of the McAlister pack, a bully and a low life.
When the pressure to mate gets too much and the prospects are pretty bad, Kensey and Slade agree to fake a relationship inorder to get their fathers off their backs. Needless to say that Kenseys father isn't really pleased by her choice of a potential mate and creates the one or the other obstacle. With their personal freedom at stake, those two have to work together, to convince everyone that this relationship is the real deal. Not an easy thing with everybody teaming up against them and a rival to deal with as well who pushes every button in order to get his way.
And sometimes, more often than not, it is not even your rival or those around you that are your worst enemy but yourself.....
Slade's father has worked hard at trying to turn his son into a copy of himself. Considering everything that went down and that he made him do, well, it might be understandable why Slade is torn and has a hard time accepting that maybe he isn't really a bad guy. Or a bad wolf. Whatever.
Kensey fights hard for her freedom but in the end - will that be enough?
"I promise, I'm 100 percent committed to our fake relationship."--Slade
I always forget how much I enjoy Jus Accardo's writing when I let too long go between reading her books--and The Big Bad Wolf is no exception. I loved the twists she brought to this shifter romance--Kensey definitely wasn't the "good girl" to Slade's bad boy, and the Romeo and Juliet slant to their story (minus the mamby-pamby attitude and the horrible ending, of course)--not to mention Kensey's fabulous t-shirt collection--made this book one heck of a fun read.
I'm not going to lie--I also spent the last 15% or so blinking back tears, both the good kind (at the end) and the bad (a little earlier. Darn you, Slade).
Fingers crossed that Ms. Accardo is going to bring us more from this universe, because the idea of each pack alpha having certain talents is intriguing, though not fully explored here. Plus, I definitely wouldn't mind reading a story from Risa's POV...
Rating: 4 stars / B+
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
The Big Bad Wolf by Jus Accardo is a werewolf YA novel in a high school setting. Kensey Deaton is the daughter of an alpha of elite lineage but she is of age and her father is threatening to pair her off and if she doesn't choose someone to marry he will pick for her and in her culture the Alpha's word is literally impossible to disobey. When she hears her neighbor, the bad boy of the werewolf world, from a reviled and downtrodden clan, Slade McAlister, getting the same speech from his alpha father she hatches a plan to get them both off the hook.
For each the other is a forbidden fruit. Kensey is too good for Slade, and he, and everyone else, knows it. But only he knows the real reasons why. As they both go deeper into their fake relationship, it becomes more real and more dangerous. I liked how tough Kensey is, not the fragile princess she is perceived to be. In many ways she brings out the best in Slade and frees him from his own shackles to be a better person. Because they are physically neighbors, there is a history that they share up to a point and this gives them common ground, though their families are vastly far apart. Jus Accardo gives us both a detailed and complex world, and also characters with real issues who need each other for more than just the reasons they think.
Overall I enjoyed the path that Kensey and Slade took and their development and growth as characters. They more they were together, the more I liked them. I recommend The Big Bad Wolf by Jus Accardo as an intense and interesting novel with a romance that deepened and grew and characters who have a lot more in common with each other than they could have imagined.
(I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book I received for free from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my open and honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.)
I requested this because I LOVED Rules of Engagement by the same author. I was a little disappointed that this did not have the same high action and swift pace. However, I did still enjoy this book. For what it was, it was a nice, sweet Romeo/Juliet type of romance. I was just hoping for something with a little more punch. It was an interesting take on the world of wolf-shifters, though. I enjoyed to world building
This is a very different take on the rich princess and the pauper, shifter style! Kensey Deaton is the daughter of a high ranking Alpha, a leader of the coalition of werewolves. Slade McAlister is the son of the abusive, renegade Alpha, a low life criminal, who is looked down upon by all the other shifter Alphas. They live next door to each other and, as children, were very close. Hierarchy, expectations and parental pressures all drove them apart but now her father is planning on arranging a marriage for her and she’s rebelling. Her solution is simple - pretend to be dating and in love with him! Can they pull it off? Can they fool their Alphas? What happens when pretending isn’t enough?
This is a young adult shifter romance, with alternating chapters being told by the two main characters, giving readers an insight into their feelings, experiences, dreams and fears. It is so easy to relate to the two main characters in this story, making this another brilliant Teen read from Entangled. This time the initial friendship between the youngsters was broken deliberately but now has a chance to heal and develop into something more substantial, especially as the attraction between the two is still there, alongside some great memories. The pack politics may, however, be (ab)used by her father to force them apart. Can love find a way for them?
This is a page turner that I hope will develop into a series. If you enjoy paranormal romance in a more contemporary style then I highly recommend you give this one a go - I really enjoyed escaping into it!
I requested and received a copy of this novel via NetGalley. This is my honest review after choosing to read it.
I loved everything about this book! It was jam packed with YA goodness, smutty awesomeness, and reluctant romance. What more could you want?
Kensey is the daughter of a werewolf leader who has recently been given an ultimatum - find a mate or one will be found for you. In true rebellious teenage fashion, she decides to choose the one boy that her father is sure to hate enough and possibly force him to let go of this forced mating. Slade, said "bad boy" choice, used to be her best friend until they both grew into their pack dynamics. Slade's pack is the worst of the worst, stealing and hurting people for fun, but that doesn't mean he agrees with it. In fact, he's been hoping to get out of his situation, but for that to happen, the council would have to dissolve his father's pack. It's with this promise that he agrees to "fake" a relationship with Kensey.
Of course it is hard to fake a relationship with there are actually real feelings on both sides. It was fun to watch them tiptoe around their emotion and even more satisfying to see how they get to their HEA. No, it isn't easy or straightforward, but it was really great reading. I couldn't put this book down from start to finish and was shocked when I reached the end. I want more!
You know those books that you go “Oh I’ll just read a little before bed” but then it’s 5am and you’ve finished the book? Well that happened to me with The Big Bad Wolf. I don't know why I am surprised when I fall in love with Jus Accardo's books. It happens every time I pick one up and this was no different. I finished this book in one sitting and could not put it down! I find the world of Werewolves so interested and I absolutely adored Slade and Kensey. The only issue I had was it was just so short. I wanted more and I think it might have fleshed some things out a little more but I could just be greedy for more of the characters and world! Another brilliant read from Jus Accardo!
I haven’t read a really good YA book in a while and that just so happens to coincides with my lack of reading anything Jus Accardo in forever. The Big Bad Wolf was a fun and lighthearted YA paranormal/shifter romance that will leave you feeling content and upbeat by the end of it. This book was entertaining and kept me hooked from start to finish.
“That’s what love is. It’s doing what’s best for the other person, even if it hurts.”
Kensey and Slade used to be best friends growing up, even though they came from opposite ends of the track so to speak. Kensey being from a highly respected pack while Slade is from a pack that most of their kind find unsavory. Even though they were close when they were young, that isn’t the case now that they’re in high school. But when both of their alpha fathers decides it’s time for them to settle down and claim a mate for the good of the pack a likely alliance forms between them, and this is where our story begins.
Kensey is a fighter through and through and she will fight till the death for someone or something she loves. Once upon a time that had been Slade, but now he seems to have grown into his own father. When her dad throws down the ultimatum of choosing a mate before he does Slade is the perfect solution; her dad will hate it, and it will keep him from picking someone of his choosing.
Slade isn’t his father but the stigma is there. Sure, he’s violent and quick-tempered, but deep down he’s as lost as ever. He hates the man his father is turning him into so when Kensey comes to him with a proposition, he refuses at first, but then she offers him something he just can’t turn down: his freedom.
Together these characters were great together. Their banter kept me entertained and even though they had chemistry and angst that could burn forever, Jus kept it at a decent YA speed. Kensey and Slade both were relatable and as readers, it is easy to connect with them instantly.
The plot was good. The pace felt rushed at times, but not enough to throw anything off. There’s a lot of pack politics, which I loved because it helped shape their world better in my mind. I also loved how each pack was connected to a specific ability, and I so, so wish Jus would have expanded on that further. We see Slade’s ability, but we were never introduced to Kensey’s or any of the other packs’ abilities. It kind of left me hoping throughout the whole book because that would have been amazing to witness.
Overall, I liked this book a lot. It was fun to read and I didn’t want to put it down until I wish done. This book was so easy to fall into and I hope Jus gives us more soon!
3 1/2 stars
Although Kensey and Slade grew up next to each and were best buddies for a long time, the backgrounds of their parents, being so disparate, threw the monkey wrench into their friendship. At least on Slade’s side.
The Big Bad Wolf is a Romeo and Juliet of werewolves with lots of politics thrown in. The unfortunate bit is that it’s a patriarchal society in which women are viewed as possessions. Hmm.
I thought the characters of Kensey and Slade were well-done. Kensey has never fit a mold or been typical. And, she’s never quite gotten over Slade’s rejection of her. Slade doesn’t fit into his father’s world either, which is blood-thirsty and avaricious. He wants to escape, does so with alcohol at times, but just running away won’t solve a thing and would probably prove unsmart.
There were lots of stereotypes. Slade’s father is irrationally unpleasant. Kensey and Slade have unreasonable peers. I would have liked more character development.
The Big Bad Wolf is a quick, mostly satisfying YA read.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Kensey refuses to roll over for her father and accept the mate he selected for her, instead she wants to be shown the respect that male werewolves get and be able to choose her own path. Slade wants nothing more but to escape the terror that is his abusive father and pack alpha, but is instead tied to a life he wants no part of and a reputation he really didn't earn. When Kensey comes up with a solution to both their problems, Slade is hesitant. But what could go wrong, and it is an easy win-win for both of them, right?
I am such a sucker for werewolf books, seriously, I gobble up all that I can get my grabby hands on. Add in a romantic element (aka the mate bond or whatever is the equivalent in a given book) and I am ever so happy. When I saw that Jus, who I absolutely love every book of hers that I have read, was writing a werewolf YA romance, I counted down the days until it was available for me to read.
The story was dual narrated by Slade and Kensey, alternating at chapters (just the way I like my romances!) Both characters have to deal with and overcome a struggle, but in such different ways. Slade is the lone wolf with an outrageously bad reputation that he did not earn and a daily battle with control over his wolf and anger. He would love to escape the life that he knows full of abuse and disappointment, but hidden deep down he was a big sweetheart. Kensey is 100% comfortable with who she is as a person as well as wolf, going out of her way to break the sweet, delicate mold that female werewolves have been placed in- instead she is capable and confident and refuses to let her father dictate her path. Past hurt and present dislike war between the two characters, but underneath bubbles chemistry and good intentions. I really shipped the two of them and I am ever so happy to report that this is a HEA story to melt your heart.
This was the perfect standalone paranormal romance, a very fast read that can be picked up and enjoyed in one sitting (if you are like me and refuse to put the book down to do adulting stuff such as cook and clean and basically be an adult). I highly recommend any book by Jus be it her sci-fi dimensional travel series The Infinity Division or this cute, sweet (pretty much pg) paranormal romance (or all her other titles I have yet to my hands on!). I can't wait to read more from her, regardless of what she wants to write about.
I am voluntarily reviewing an advance, complimentary copy of this book.

This was a cute shifter read by a new to me author. At first the cover threw me off as the main character doesn’t scream “big bad wolf” but nonetheless Slade did live up to his reputation in this story. Kennsey was a spitfire and I loved how she held her ground especially around all the alpha male wolves. This was my first time reading anything by this author and I enjoyed the story and will most definitely look forward to future books!
Hey lovely readers! Today's post is going to be a review of The Big Bad Wolf by Jus Accardo. I was given an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
"Kensey Deaton comes from an elite werewolf lineage, but just because her family is royalty, doesn't mean she'll fall in line like some perfect little princess. She has plans and they don't include an arranged marriage! Slade McAlister has his own family drama. His Alpha father happens to be the most reviled wolf on the eastern seaboard, and it's a stigma he can't escape. So when his neighbor Kensey--the girl of his dreams and his nightmares--proposes a solution to solve *both* of their problems, he sees an opportunity he can’t ignore. Kensey and Slade aren't only from opposite sides of the tracks, they're from opposite sides of the war. But if they can sell their 'relationship', they might just make it out of this with their freedom. You know, as long as all that fake PDA doesn't turn into more..."
Okay now for the fun stuff! This book is just pure fun! I really loved that this was a shifter romance. I haven't read many and so this was really refreshing. This is definitely your classic hate to love trope, with a fun twist, wolves! Kensey is a true bad ass who refuses to live her life for anyone but herself. Slade is a boy who just wants freedom no matter what the cost. This story is a really great mix of fantasy and reality. The shifter element gives a good dose of fantasy, but Kensey and Slade's relationship is definitely relate-able in a few ways. They're both angry and hurt, yet they care enough about each other to come up with this crazy scheme. I loved that they always seemed to have each other's backs when it really mattered and how they really brought out the best in one another.
This book was definitely heavy on the fluff! But I loved it, this is the perfect book to read when you need something fun and satisfying. The perfect book to pull you out of a reading slump. The writing was really well done, very descriptive, which is really important for me in a book with fantasy elements. I think my favorite part of the story was how the characters wolves were talked about. The wolf is such an integral part of each person, something to be accepted, not feared. I was surprised that the story touched on some extremely important themes like abuse (physical and verbal), accepting yourself, and female independence. I would say the only part of the story I didn't like was Kensey's dad. He seemed a little wishy washy to me. One minute he's forcing Kensey to conform and the next minute he's the complete opposite. But overall I really enjoyed this book and I have already acquired a few more shifter books! Pick this one up and I guarantee you'll love it! Slade has become one of my new favorite book boys!

The Big Bad Wolf is a young adult fantasy novel with a hint of contemporary romance. The story is told through alternate point of views by Kensey and Slade with each chapter you get a different perspective of the story. Kensey’s father is the Alpha of her pack which makes her family royalty in the werewolf community. Slade is from the opposite pack that has more of a criminal background. They refuse to follow the rules and take whatever they want.
When the Kensey’s dad (the Alpha) tells her she must choose a mate or he will choose one for her. This gives her the idea to start a fake relationship with Slade. Can they just remain friends in this fake relationship or will it turn into something more?
The Big Bad Wolf is a fast-paced read that is full of drama, action, friendship, family, and love. The love that grows between Kensey and Slade is slow but steady making this a hard book to put down. Overall, I recommend The Big Bad Wolf to anyone who loves a good young adult fantasy with a wolfy Romeo and Juliet twist.
The Big Bad Wolf by Jus Accardo
I absolutely enjoyed reading this book, it was totally different from the infinity division but I loved it! Slade and Kensey are my new favorite couple she has tamed the big bad wolf and he sort of tamed her.
I love this one! As a hard core romance reader I love a great YA to cleanse my brain...if its a wonderful paranormal..sign me up!
I love the angst, the strength and the fall...the wolf life dynamic is awesome and unique...the blurb sucked me in and I was lost in the story. Friends lost to life...discovered again through a plot to deceive.
Push and pull....growth and just a lot of wow. It was easy to fall in love with this book!
What a fun read! It was short enough and intriguing enough that I read it all in one sitting. I really enjoyed the different pack dynamics and how both Kensey and Slade felt about them. Slade's dad was particularly horrible so I don't blame Slade for feeling like he would never be good enough for Kensey. Kensey is no push over, which was awesome. She really wanted to buck the pack rules about getting her match, especially since it was to creepy Carter (who I'm so glad got what he deserved). Accardo packed a lot in this short book so it was fast paced and never had a dull moment.
If you are looking for sweet, funny werewolf story, then this books is for you. You'll fly through it, and don't realize that you're done when you reach the end. It was a super light, fun and fast read. Full review here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2302689871?book_show_action=false&from_review_page=1
the big bad wolf is like teen wolf meets footloose in the best possible way. kensey's dad wants her to match up with a suitable mate. it's their pack's turn to share the fire affinity. but kensey's a high school senior, she has no interest in being any guy's mate. when she overhears her neighbor arguing with his father about the same exact thing she has a plan.
slade mcallister is the worst possible choice for a mate. his clan's affinity is allure, which basically means they are good at manipulating people to do their bidding. and into having sex. slade does his best to avoid using his gift, but all that repression leads to an uncontrollable wolf.
kensey's plan is to present slade as her choice of mate and to request that they undergo a courting. their packs adhere to all these old school rules that are not worth recounting here, but basically both slade and kensey chafe against the restrictions they are forced to abide.
they were friends once. as children. and it meant something, until one day it didn't. kensey didn't realize how much she missed her friend until she started spending time with him again. and the closer they become, old feelings surge between them and grow and deepen into love.
but slade is still not an acceptable choice, and kensey has a duty to her pack. and all of this will come to a head in a pretty dramatic fashion.
this story was the perfect amount of paranormal and angsty teen romance.
**the big bad wolf will publish on march 5, 2018. i received an advance reader copy courtesy of netgalley/entangled publishing (crave) in exchange for my honest review.
I've come to the conclusion that I will probably always like the Entangled Teen romances that I read. They are light, fun, and easy to read. There is always something about them that I end up liking and this one is no exception.
The Big Bad Wolf is a fun paranormal read. It has a friendship turned hatred turned love story that I really enjoyed.
Kensey is part of the Deaton pack. Her father is the alpha and she is expected to find a mate. Females are basically treated as property. They are expected to marry and create new little pack members. They generally don't get much say. The alpha has final say in the end. Very few will ever marry for love.
Slade is part of the McAlister pack. His father, Gavin, is a horrible man. Slade has had a pretty horrible upbringing. Gavin used their power, persuasion over the opposite sex, to get his wife. She, like so many other females, ended up killing herself. Slade believes what his father has told him, that he's pretty much evil. Gavin makes Slade do things for him. Slade drinks a lot and keeps to himself to numb the pain. But it isn't working well.
Kensey and Slade used to be friends, but Slade hurt her and they stopped talking. Kensey comes up with an idea to pretend to date Slade with the hopes that her dad will just skip over her and marry off her younger sister instead. But Kensey and Slade both start having real feelings for each other. The main issue is that Slade feels like he's not good enough for her. And many people try to convince him just that.
The story takes off pretty quickly and the writing flows well. There were a lot of small fight scenes and talk about a previous assault to Kensey (but the details were never really revealed, just a warning for anyone who needs it). I wasn't a big fan of Gavin or Lupe, but like Risa a lot. Kensey's dad grew on me, too. He had a nice moment with Slade towards the end of the book that was really touching.
Overall, I really liked this book a lot and gave it 4 stars.
Thank you to Entangled Teen for providing me a copy for review.
I gave this book 3 stars. It was a good book, well written, the problem lies in the fact that I don’t think it’s going to be memorable. It’s too much like all those other YA paranormal romances. In a week or two I probably won’t remember what happened.
It was well written, the flow was gorgeous, it’s more of the contents that were lacking. The rhythm of the story was smooth and if the story itself had been more engaging I could have really loved it.
The characters were not the best. Some of the characters were just so stubborn and set in their ways that it was truly frustrating at times. I also didn’t feel like the two leads had that much chemistry. I felt like these two characters just clashed too much in the wrong way that I couldn’t really get behind it.
It’s really hard to write a review for this one because I don’t feel like I have enough to say about it to really give you the full picture.
