3.5 Stars- As an insightful history of this iconic show, this really was an excellent book. Clearly written with its details well chosen to move the narrative along, Armstrong is an able non-fiction story teller. There were several sections that I found fascinating, particularly the chapter exploring the show's relationship to driving consumerism of specific products & places. That being said, I think I was hoping for more analysis and deeper critique, which is just not the project of this book. I'd certainly recommend this for anyone who enjoyed the show (which is me, so I was happy to get into the details of how the show came to be), but I'm not sure it has the broader appeal I hoped it might
I am in LOVE with book, in the same way I loved SATC itself. The author immediately establishes her credibility and earns her super fan status by letting you in on the way the show impacted her own love life. It gave me the utmost confidence that she knew the importance this show and these characters had on the lives of so many women (myself included). And the book is FULL of interesting stories and the origins of Candace's column, the show, the characters, the casting...I could go on and on! I thought I knew a lot about the show before but this book made me realize there was so much juicy fun to read about. The book is debuting at the perfect time, it's a great summer read!
I was a big fan of Sex and the City. Carrie Bradshaw was my ultimate fashion muse and her friends were definitely #squadgoals (my favorite character was Charlotte, though). It was interesting to read this new book by Jennifer K Armstrong. Learning about the back story of Candace Bushnell and the author herself, plus the back stories of the fabulous characters and men and women behind the hit TV show was such an honorific opportunity.
It was great to reminisce about TV's prime and staple show, that launched the careers of actors and actresses like SJP and Chris Noth, and I really was amazed at how the production staff and the people behind the scenes were able to show the best and worst NYC had to offer. I love how the author also interviewed the celebrities involved int he show, and how Darren Star made this show a phenomenon. Quite an interesting read!
I think when you enjoy the topic of a book, it is fairly intuitive to say that your potential to enjoy the book itself increases. I asked to be considered to receive an ARC (Advanced Reader's Copy) because I enjoyed the TV show so much. There wasn't too much in the book that I didn't already know about the show ITSELF, but there was a lot that I hadn't consciously considered about the show's influence prior to reading.
The show had many imperfections, which are addressed within these pages, but it took paths that had already been started by other people/shows a and widened those ideas into roads. That perspective is what makes this book different from other fan focused material. I enjoyed being made to think about how much of an impact the show made, and also how much more it could have done.
The author clearly enjoys her subject and holds it close to her heart, but appears to have done her research, which is acknowledged and referenced at the end. I will probably read this again!
This book wasn't quite as engaging as I'd hoped. In fact, I found myself bored many times even though I loved the tv show so much. I'm not sure if it was the author jumping around or perhaps adding too much irrelevant information about her own story but it lacked that something that would've kept my attention. I did enjoy the character stories and tidbits as well as everything about NYC but overall, just not what I expected
The book starts off with the author explaining how the series helped her make life decisions and affected her while it aired. Then, this is quickly lost, and the book becomes all about the series- the source material, the dal for making the show, casting, making the show, it's reception, and dealing with criticism and world events ( real just 9/11.) I felt the title and cover were misleading. There is no "us", there is just a little bit about some people, the show influenced, then the show itself. I really wanted to know more about what happened to the author, and perhaps other real people who were affected by the show. So really, it's much more of a history of the show.
As someone who binge-watched Sex and the City, I was looking forward to reading this. Sex and the City and Us was a fun, intriguing read. Anyone who enjoyed the show would enjoy reading this, especially the backstory on the show and characters.
I loved Sex and the City so this book was a must read for me.
The one of the book kind of switches back and forth between a narrative and insider information on Bushnell and Sex and the City and a more straightforward biography of how the show came to be, including the casting of the actors.
A few interesting tidbits, but I am still missing some chunks, such as why was Bushnell so welcomed in the world she was in. What was it about her that made her special?
The writing style is good, but to be honest, there is nothing here to really get excited about.
I was hoping for the inside scoop in this book and what I got was a wayyyy more sanitized version of what happened.
If you're a fan of SATC read this book. It was fun and I enjoyed it.
I think I might have had to be living off planet to not have seen Sex and the City and it was certainly a topic of discussion among my friends. While I may not be a die-hard TV show viewer as I would never have altered plans to be home to watch an episode(Netflix and being able to binge whenever have certainly altered that dynamic), I certainly caught up eventually. What I am though is a behind the scenes nerd or junkie or just all around fan of how shows are conceived, and where the ideas came from and how it all comes together in the end. The author compiled a wealth of information and put it all together in an engaging manner. From the fact that the show was based on a column written for the New York Observer, to how many of the scripts were conceived from the writers own experiences and everything else that is involved when you are part of a show that many argued was extremely relevant and changed many lives, this was a very good companion to a show that dominated conversations for many years.
If you enjoyed the show, I would recommend putting this title on your TBR list. Sex and the City was a show that offered a glimpse into a world that most of us will never know. The clothes, the shoes, the friendships, the men, the glitz, and glamour made it fun and entertaining, and just like winning the lottery, you never know.
Thank you, Jennifer Keishin Armstrong, Simon & Schuster and NetGalley for a digital ARC to read and review. I will be buying several copies for some old friends in June and I think we will spend some quality time reminiscing.
I very much enjoyed this book, although it is not for the particular demographic that my library serves (Junior High Teens). I am a huge fan of Sex and the City, and I enjoyed the in-depth look at how the show rose to cult status among many women. There were a few parts where I felt that the information was a little monotonous and too drawn out, but for anyone who likes these characters/show, it's a good read.
This is a book to grip all sex and the city fans and if you love the show and movies why not try the book.
There's no grip in a novel for SATC fans but it's a base for how the story began from the beginning and how they became what they did... it didn't grip me like I expected though.
Thanks to netgalley
An interesting history analysis of what SATC was, how was born. Really well written and recommended.
Many thanks to Netgalley and SImon & Schuster
Carrie Bradshaw is my least favourite character ever created. So reading about her just made me roll my eyes. But having said that, reading about the rest of the characters was very interesting and enjoyable. A very well written book.
Amazing book. As a SATC lover, I learned so many new things. Couldn’t put it down. Highly recommend!
I'm a huge fan of Sex and the City. I just recently watched all the seasons over a few months.
As for this book, not a fan.
Thank you to author, publisher, and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.
While I got the book for free, it had no bearing on the rating I gave it.
I was just a child when SATC first aired, but I watched it years later and it's one of my favorite shows. I enjoyed this book, because it reminded me of so many special aspects that make me love these characters so much.
I was giving an advanced reader's copy in exchange for an honest review
I'm giving this one two stars but I hope it can be re-blurbed or tweaked before publication- the marketing is that of a woman's studies media think piece, ie, how do women think about the show, how has it changed how we think about ourselves, how has it changed the culture. The ARC I just read is a pure informational report about the making of Sex and the City. These are two different books. I wanted to read the first, not the second
Lots of good behind the scenes info, analysis of the show and its reach, but not enough of the 'us' that is part of the title. Almost twenty years later though, the essence of the show lives on.
I love Sex and the City. True story- I still fall asleep to the reruns that I have recorded on my tv, all these years later. I found this book FASCINATING. It focused heavily on the writing of the series, which I appreciated. I loved learning about how stories came about (surprisingly, or perhaps not , many came from real life); it was a treat to read about more than just backstage fueds and drama. The book is well written and well organized, and I couldn't get enough. I loved how well the social commentary was woven through the facts; the two blended seamlessly. I think this is a book that will appeal to so many women of my generation- those with everything from a passing interest to a downright obsession.
