I requested When Life Gives You Lululemons during the late winter. When the snow continued to come, despite the calendar saying spring - I wanted to crack it open. However, I stopped myself knowing that this was going to be my read to usher in summer. And boy am I glad I waited - because this has set my summer reading mood into high drive!
The book opens with Emily Charleton's flight from LA to NYC, and quickly morphs to the suburbs - specifically Greenwich, CT. Here we get to know Miriam, Emily's oldest friend, who recently moved from the City, and Koralina, weathering a scandal of EPIC proportions. Together they embark on a journey of self-discovery, and justice. Sounds a little heavy when put that way, but trust me it is highly entertaining. I mean how could it not be when you are following the lives of the upper echelons of the wealthy set? The reality they live in is so vastly different then mine. Having a lookey - loo at their reality was fascinating and did make think is this what really goes on? I somehow suspect there is a lot of truth in this fictional read.
I found myself, at various times, yelling at Karolina to grow a backbone, feeling anxiety for Miriam and her completely new direction in life, and laughing at loud at how blunt Emily is. I really grew to like the three and was pleasantly surprised and happy to see them have each other's back in both good times and completely crappy ones. I think the Real Housewives franchise has affected my view of female relationships on TV and in books. So thank you Lauren for writing about flawed but honest women who ultimately do the right thing.
Like a delicious glass of Prosecco, this book was bubbly, fun, and a pleasure to read. I would highly recommend you add this to your summer TBR pile - it is a perfect read for those hot summer days.
I received an e-arc via NetGalley from Simon & Schuster. And while I appreciate the free copy, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Like most women my age, I eagerly devoured "The Devil Wears Prada" when I was just out of college. At the time, I was working as an editorial assistant at "Soap Opera Digest" so I felt a connection to the novel, even though my boss was nothing like Miranda Priestly.
Nearly 10 years later, I picked up the sequel, which was so forgettable (and awful according to my thoughts at the time) that I didn't even remember it existed until I saw that the newest book was called "Devil Wears Prada #3".
Despite my unfavorable impressions of "Revenge Wears Prada", I jumped on "When Life Gives You Lululemons" when it appeared on Netgalley.
"When Life Gives You Lululemons" shifts the story to Emily, the bitchy senior assistant to Miranda Priestly in the first novel. She was brilliantly played by Emily Blunt in the movie, but I didn't remember much else. Clearly I had no memory of her even being in the second book.
Anyway, years after working at Runway and launching a wedding magazine with "Prada" protagonist Andy Sachs, Emily is now a celebrity stylist and image consultant in Hollywood. I was perplexed by her job initially. One minute she's giving fashion advice, the next swooping in Olivia Pope style to fix some celeb's faux pas. I thought those were two separate jobs, but I guess if someone is going to do both, it's Emily Charlton.
However, Emily isn't doing so great on the job front at the start of the book. Younger, more social media savvy consultants are poaching her customers. She winds up retreating to Connecticut to lick her wounds and spend time with an old camp friend, Miriam.
Miriam is a stay at home mom of 3, who recently gave up her job and moved to Greenwich with her family. She is lost in the world of wealthy, stay at home moms who spend all their time at Soul Cycle, dressed in Lululemon athleisure wear. She never dresses right and struggles to lose the baby weight, never even considering the surgical tweaks her new neighbors go through to maintain their perfect bodies.
Her old friend, Karolina (I can't for the life of me recall how they became friends) is hiding out in Connecticut too, after being arrested for driving her son and his friends around while drunk. Only problem? She wasn't drunk and the cops held her overnight, refusing to give her a breathalyzer. Her husband is a powerful junior senator with his eyes on the presidency and her arrest is hugely problematic for him. He threatens to take their son (actually her stepson) from her unless she cleans up her act.
It is this drama that brings the three very different women together (seriously, I couldn't quite buy that they'd all become so close) and bonds them deeply as they navigate Karolina's impending divorce and custody battles and deal with their own career and family problems.
Emily wants her career back and, after a flirtation with a local man, to figure out where her marriage is going. Miriam is bored at home, so bored that she begins to suspect her busy husband, Paul, is cheating on her. She is also desperately unhappy with her body and image. "When Life Gives You Lululemons" aims to help all three women get their groove back.
This was definitely a better read than the terrible "Revenge Wears Prada". Like that book, Miranda makes a couple of appearances - as terrifying as usual. Andy Sachs is briefly dropped in on too so the audience knows how she ended up.
Like the other books, this novel was filled with celebs and fashion. Every page pretty much dropped in some reference to high fashion brands or current celebrity gossip. This makes it a fun read, but also sometimes a slog to get through. I don't need to know what every character is wearing or carrying. The women also end up in some ridiculously expensive hotel in the desert, which sounds fabulous, but also just an excuse for the author to drop in the name of someplace so exclusive the general public hasn't heard of it. I guess that's the appeal of these books, though. It's sort of fun reading a who's who of pop culture today; a novel sized version of US Weekly.
I can't remember enough about Emily to comment on whether her character is true to the previous books. Her storyline was pretty predictable, though. Miriam was also a familiar character, cut from the cloth of every other fish out of water mom character in every other chick lit book. Still, I enjoyed her chapters.
For me, Karolina was the most interesting character and her storyline the most fascinating and horrifying. A former sueprmodel, Karolina has spent her post-modeling career as the wife of a widowed Kennedy-esque politician and doting mother to his son. Her motivation is all about having young Harry in her life again. The lengths that her odious husband, Graham, goes to in order to achieve his White House dreams were horrific. I predicted what was behind her arrest before it was revealed, so there are no big surprises here, except for what was behind Karolina's long struggle with infertility. As someone who faced serious reproductive issues myself, I was absolutely horrified at one reveal.
I don't know if a whole novel could have been built on Karolina's storyline, but man, I would have eaten that up. Despite not really buying the three women as friends, I enjoyed seeing them help each other and genuinely care for and root one another one as the novel progressed.
"When Life Gives You Lululemons" is the perfect summer vacay book: easy, breezy and a welcome return to the Prada world that the first book captured so well.
Should I feel guilty about enjoying a book that is the moral equivalent of reading the National Enquirer while watching the Maury Povich show? Maybe I should, but I don't. This book is laugh out loud clever, scandalous, sharp, and just flat out fun. It's not groundbreaking or illuminating, it's what you read in the bath with a glass of wine after a long day, or on the beach while trying to forget your own problems and issues. It's a make-believe gossip-fest with girls you can't quite believe you are actually hanging out with. I enjoyed it immensely, right down to the predictable, yet still satisfying ending.
I warn you, you'll learn more about cosmetic surgery than you ever wanted to know. But if you don't laugh so hard you'll nearly wet your pants (there's a procedure for that), then you're taking this book too seriously.
Perfect, absolutely perfect, for a summer weekend (or any time for that matter!). Emily - and later Miranda-is back and boy is she still loaded for bear. Yes this is a tale of the 1 percent but Weisberger turns an eagle on the excess, especially via Miriam, a Harvard educated former partner at Skadden Arts (no small thing) who resigned to be a stay at home mom to her three kids. Miriam and Emily band together to help Karolina, a former super model who is done wrong by her Senator husband. This book is largely about three women working together to make things right. I loved it and I sooooo hope Emily Blunt will reprise her role in a screen adaptation You don't need to have read Devil Wears Prada or to have seen the movie to enjoy this book but you'd be missing out (especially on Meryl Streep and Blunt.). Thanks to the publisher for the ARC-this was terrific!
This was a great beach read! I loved the characters and that fact that Miranda Priestly was back, giving readers her Miranda Priestly best. I would definitely recommend this book to friends for a fun summer read.
I have to say that so far the summer books I’ve had the pleasure of reading have really been outstanding, I think there’s always a small group of amazing books released each summer but this year I feel like the stakes have been raised, and Weisberger took things to a whole new level with this one. If you’re a fan of The Devil Wears Prada (and seriously, who isn’t?!) you’ll gobble this one up. If you’re new to this series you’ll still love it, it’s not necessary to have read the previous books but they’re all fun so you should.
You have three points of view here; Emily, Karolina and Miriam. All three are polar opposites but fun and entertaining in their own right. Emily will always be my favorite, her biting, acerbic wit is legendary and her pop culture references are on point. This book is uber hip and up to the minute AND it’s funny as hell. It’s scandalous, emotional, hilarious and compulsive, I can’t think of the last time I had so much fun with a book.
Grab this one and head to a pool with a cocktail and be prepared to devour it in one sitting, theglitz will dazzle you and the drama will shock you and make you laugh, the ideal light read for summer is here!
When Life Gives You Luluemons in three words: Delicious, Scandalous and Witty.
Wow, this one was tough. I had hoped it would be funnier and more lighthearted. It was a quick read with some interesting situations and humor, but I found Emily a little too cold this go round.
I loved this book the most out of the series. I always loved the character Emily so I was excited to hear more about her life than in the previous books. There are three women's perspectives, which I found really immersive and I was very invested in the end result.
Thank you NetGalley for my ARC. I absolutely loved this book. Always been a fan of Lauren Weisberger and the Devil Wears Prada series. This one didn't disappoint. I'm glad Emily was brought back in this one. I enjoy her sarcastic humor.
The plot started with a DUI arrest, husbands cheating and 3 friends. This was a quick read for me. Definitely recommend!
When Life Gives You Lululemons by Lauren Weisberger is the third book of The Devil Wears Prada series, but it’s the first book I’ve read from Lauren Weisberger. I tried to read The Devil Wears Prada before reading When Life Gives You Lululemons, but I couldn’t get myself to finish it because I despised Andy’s character even though I loved the movie. I skipped the second book, Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns, due to the terrible reviews and that I couldn’t finish the first book. When Life Gives You Lululemons follows Emily, Miriam, and Karolina. Emily, the famous ex-assistant of Miranda Presley, is an image consultant, but finds herself losing business to a younger social media savvy competitor. Miriam, the link between Emily and Karolina, just quit her job as a lawyer in New York, moves out to the suburbs with her family, and finds herself trying to adjust to her new life as a stay home mom. While Karolina, a former supermodel and married to a U.S. Senator, suddenly gets arrested for a DYI while driving her son and his friends. She finds herself consulting her best friends, Miriam and Emily, trying to salvage her reputation. Overall, this was a decent read. I definitely preferred this over The Devil Wears Prada. I loved how different each of the main characters were yet it made sense why they are such close friends. I liked how this novel shows female friendship in a positive light and also shows women in different stages of their lives. It was an entertaining yet somewhat relatable read. I would definitely recommend if you’re looking for something lighthearted and fun to read this summer! The book debuts on Tue 6/5/18.
I typically enjoy all books by this author so I figured I would like this one too. I wasn't wrong. I really liked Emily in The Devil Wears Prada and was happy to get to read more about her. I love her snarkiness and I really liked the new characters introduced in this one, Miriam more than Karolina, but both were interesting. The scandal/drama was good in this, but not overdone or cheesy and I really enjoyed the ending. I hope there's more to come!
Thank you for this ARC!
As a long time fan of Lauren Weisberger, I was so excited to get to read When Life Gives You Lululemons! I LOVE the 3 story lines exploring the lives of 3 very different women experiencing 3 very different periods of life. Who knew Connecticut was so scandalous?! Those who have read the Devil Wears Prada will have a great appreciation for being on Emily's journey. Snarky, sassy and scandalous - this book is the perfect read as we enter into the summer months and is the ideal beach read (with a drink in hand naturally!).
Thanks to Netgalley for an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
DNF 40%
Let me start by saying I've never read any of the other books in this series. I also have a strict policy on what I allow in my mind as far as foul language and sexual innuendos. So with that said, there was just too much explicit language & content to skip over so I gave up at 40%--which is more than I would normally give. The story itself is good and writing (outside the unnecessary language, etc) I just don't think those things were necessary. So this review is entirely based on personal preference and conviction.
Thanks again Netgalley!
I enjoyed this light hearted read from the author off the Devil Wears Prada. It was fun to see little snippets of life, of how characters from the original were supposedly living now. And it was nice to see Emily in a different light. I chuckled quite a bit and while most of it wrapped up far too neatly, it was enjoyable. Would recommend!
When Life Gives You Lululemons makes for the perfect summer/poolside read. Lighthearted, with lots of fun characters, this novel is pure entertainment. I loved each of the three women this novel centered around, and appreciated their friendship. I received this ARC from the publisher through NetGalley. All opinions expressed are my own.
When Life Gives you Lululemons is an absolutely perfect summer read. I'd recommend this one to anyone who enjoys the Real Housewives or escaping into a guilty pleasure read. This is the third book in The Devil Wears Prada series, though you definitely don't need to have read the others to enjoy this book. I personally have not read either of the other books, but I've seen the movie, and could completely picture Emily in this book. I loved all of the rich people drama happening in the suburbs of Greenwich, while still maintaining an intriguing story line.
This novel is the third in the "Devil Wears Prada" series but for this segment Emily takes the stage and Andy is only mentioned briefly. If you were somewhat let down by "Revenge Wears Prada" I highly recommend checking this book out as it is far better than the sequel. Overall I really enjoyed this entry into the series and I think it's going to be a popular choice for beach totes this summer!
The story is told from three viewpoints: Emily, Miriam and Karolina and is mostly told over the course of about 6 months. Karolina is a past supermodel turned Senator's wife and has been charged with an unjust DUI. She leans on her best friend Miriam for support as she hides out in her home in Greenwich, CT while Emily does damage control to keep the story from ruining Karolina's life.
I really fell for all three of these characters and while at times they made boneheaded decisions, they were all quite relatable and real in their own ways. Emily still has her biting wit but has softened around the edges since we last saw her. By far though I think Miriam was my favorite of the girls, mostly because for me she was the most relatable.
This is a perfect book for anyone who read "The Devil Wears Prada" and is looking for a fun book to include on their trips this summer. What's really great about it is that even if you haven't read the previous two novels in this series you'd not be lost at all, it's just backstory but you get the highlights through the book.
What a fantastic read! I love everything by Lauren Weisberger, and this book was no exception. Funny, clever, and another great glimpse into the "Devil Wears Prada" world!
Lauren Weisberger is back in top form with her newest book. It's witty, smart, sharp, and edgy, but packed with heart. I was hesitant to read it because I'd been underwhelmed by Revenge Wears Prada and hated to be disappointed by a favorite author. I'm so happy to report that I thoroughly enjoyed this read. I adored all three of the main characters and while I cringed at some of the "activities" the Connecticut couples engaged in, I was beyond satisfied by how it all came together in the end. I held my breath, afraid of what one character was doing, but the author took the plot in the direction I wanted and I was able to breathe easy again. Hooray for Emily. That's all :)
I’m sorry but I’ve picked this book up on three separate occasions and put it back down. I think it’s just so many different characters each having their own story that is making me lose interest or connection. I’m sure it’s just me. I’ll remove it from my shelves without a negative review out of courtesy. Best wishes!
