I can only compare this story as going to an ice-cream parlor for a decadent dessert.. Her story of 3 friends is deliciously wicked and her easy flowing style of writing captivates your attention immediately. You hate to finish the story and feel that you know these characters personally, I think she has surpassed herself with this original and entertaining new book. A must read!
I absolutely love this book.
Emily Charlton is one of my favorite character in the Devil Wears Prada universe. This was a great story that takes us from LA back to NYC and Greenwich. I love the friendships, the twist and turns. This is the perfect summer read!
I seriously could not put this down! I was a little worried to hear that the The Devil Wears Prada series was continuing since I didn't really love Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns, but this was excellent! Emily was always my favorite character in the series, so maybe taking Andie out of the mix was the win here. The setting of Greenwich, CT was genius (rich mommies!!) and the introduction of Miriam and Karolina as main characters was also a hit for me. I loved this book and I hope there will be more of this crew in the future!
I've read all of Lauren Weisberger's books and I truly enjoyed this one. I liked how it connected with Emily from ""The Devil Wears Prada" but also introducing new characters into the plot to make a very interesting book. Sometimes when books are told by multiple characters they can become confusing, however, this one was very clear and easy to read. I am grateful for the copy from NetGalley.
What a fun read to kick off the summer season of poolside reading! Lauren Weisberger, author of The Devil Wears Prada, is back on the literary scene with her newest book and it does not disappoint.
Emily, Miriam and Karolina are the main players in this story and they compliment each other so beautifully with their differing personalties. When Karolina finds herself in a sticky situation, Emily and Miriam team up to get her life back on track and in the process, each of them face their own challenges and come out on top.
Some parts are a bit racy and there is some foul language occasionally, but for the most part, this is a light-hearted story that readers will enjoy. There is even a cameo appearance of Miranda Priestley and Andy.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster for allowing me to read an advance copy and give my honest review.
Another fabulous book by Weisberger. The story kept a great pace. Excellent storyline. all good !!!!
This was a fun book and should go on your reading list for the summer! It's light and funny while it tells a story of three women who circle the wagons when one of them gets wronged. While they are all a little different, they exemplify a true friendship and don't give up on each other. And the parties in Greenwich are hysterical. Every neighborhood has its share of craziness but surely none like this one!
Thank you to NetGalley and Simon and Schuster for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
3.5 stars
This is cute and fun and has some satisfying throwback nostalgia to The Devil Wears Prada.
I'm not a chick lit fan at all and read very little of it (it's possible that the last chick lit book I read was actually The Devil Wears Prada, circa 10+ years ago). However, I'd read enough from the genre prior to that to recognize an author who is a cut above her peers.
Here in the follow-up story, this time focusing on former Runway first assistant Emily Charlton, Weisberger again gives us a charming, likable story that's slightly smarter than your average girlie fashion novel.
The book strains credulity at times, especially in terms of Emily's character evolution. Sure, people grow up and change, but I'm not sure this iteration of Emily (however snappy her chatter and ever-present her pack of marlboros) is a believable progression from the quasi-villain who menaced Andi Sachs. Still less believable is her long-time friendship with Miriam, though that's more about the near-absurdity of Miriam's caricature-like self than about her relationship to Emily specifically.
This lacks the originality and the humor that made The Devil Wears Prada such a standout in an otherwise dull genre, but it keeps you reading and it's sweet and satisfying, provided you don't think too hard about the plot.
If you loved Devil Wears Prada and Revenge Wears Prada, you are in for a thrill. Ten years have passed since we last saw Emily Charlton and she's just as bitchy and dramatic as ever. It's a fast-paced, pop-culture filled read that will keep you riveted page after page. Tuck this one into your carry-on or your beach bag for a total escapist read.
This is a book by the Devil Wears Prada author that follows the character of Emily. I LOVED Emily in the movie so I decided to read this. It was entertaining and funny, but I was kind of put off by the author’s obsession with weight. It came off as an in-joke and funny in Prada but in this one the characters are moms, and so it feels kind of dated. Like reading a vintage book where a parent hits their kid but about a mom grabbing her stomach in disgust in front of her young daughter. If you enjoyed this author’s other books or are really into fashion, you will like this one, but if you aren’t familiar there are better books to pick up.
Lauren Weisberger does it again. Perfectly executed “sequel” to The Devil Wears Prada, complete with Andy and Miranda cameos. Super of-the-moment with spot-on observations of Washington and suburban Connecticut society. The beach book everyone will love this summer and beg for the Emily Blunt movie!
Thank you Netgalley for the ARC.
It's always fun when an author revisits characters from other books. When Life Gives You Lululemons Weisberger takes us back to Emily Charlton from the Devil Wears Prada. Emily is now an image consultant to celebrities living in LA with her husband, Miles. At thirty six Emily is feeling like she is losing her touch as several of her clients dump her for a younger consultant. She ends up in Greenwich, CT with her old friend, Miriam, who reintroduces her to Karolina Hartwell. Karolina is in the midst of a crisis and Emily and Miriam are both ready to support her through it.
As always Weisberger tells and entertaining tale with an edge of bitchiness that is enjoyable.
I had a slow start to this book. It wasn’t what I was expecting and I found Emily, Karolina, and Miriam unrelatable and not really caring about them. You know, huge incomes, huge problems. But then I settled into the story line and appreciated it for what was intended... an over the top, exaggerated glimpse into lives that we don’t see on a day to day basis. We don’t all have friends that will leave their husband at a party and fly across the country to do personal crisis management. We don’t get invited to parties where they bring in porn stars to demonstrate technique! The fun of this story, once I got over myself, was the parody. We do have friends in tennis clubs or PTA or book clubs that plan their parenting around their gym schedules. Hopefully we go have those friends who may not have the ability to jump on across country plane but possibly they can jump in the car with s bottle of wine and a pizza to listen to our latest perceived calamity. It was a nice break to sit down and enjoy a book that didn’t require a spreadsheet of characters or heavy emotions. You won’t cry or need tissues but you will snort/laugh out loud on several occasions.
This was another great lighthearted novel by Lauren Weisberger. After my first time watching The Devil Wears Prada I devoured every book by her that I could get my hands on and have loved every single one of them. This book was hilarious and so much fun to read.
Emily Charlton (ex-assistant to the famous Miranda Priestly) is now a publicity manager to the stars and deals with smoothing over client's fiascos. Karolina Hartwell is the wife of a senator on his way to presidency when she gets pulled over for a DUI with kids in the car. Miriam who is a former hot shot lawyer turned stay at home mom is the link between them and brings Emily in to help Karolina clear her name. All three women could not be more different from each other but they all come together to reveal the truths and lies that no one saw coming.
Excellent book that will make you laugh out loud and smile. Thanks to Simon & Schuster for sending me a copy of this book for my review.
Lauren Weisberger has done it again! When Life Gives you LuluLemons was a page turner that I read in one day!
It is the story of Emily Charlton, Miranda Priestley's infamous assistant from Devil Wears Prada 10 years since the last time we have read about her!
Weisberger also introduces two addl new characters, old friends of Emily''s, Karolina and Miriam two characters you will enjoy reading about too!
If you enjoyed Devil Wears Prada, you will love this!
Just like Devil Wears Prada & Revenge Wears Prada, When Life Gives You Lululemons is full of hollywood society & the lives of the rich moms who's only job is to shop. Love love love this one just as much as the first two. Was delighted that Miranda Priestly made a few appearances as well. Will definitely recommend this book to everyone and huge thanks to netgalley for the oppurtunity to read this delicious novel!!!!@!!
I really enjoued this sequel. The title is funny. I learned a lot about suburban mothers in Connecticut. I enjoyed Karolina, Miriam, and Emily teaming up together to take down the Senator.
Synopsis:
I'm sure you've heard of A Devil Wears Prada and either read the book, seen the movie, or both. When Life Gives You Lululemons is written in the Devil Wears Prada universe and reintroducing yourself to those characters (or at least Miranda and Emily) will definitely help you enjoy this one!
When Life Gives You Lululemons tells Emily's (Miranda's assistant in A Devil Wears Prada) story - Emily is now in her mid-thirties and living in LA as an image consultant to celebrities. She ends up in Greenwich to visit her childhood friend Miriam and gets ensared in suburb drama and managing the image of newly defamed Karolina. All of the characters are equally delicious and will quickly draw you in.
Review:
Lately I've been drawn to light and fun reads and When Life Gives You Lululemons did not disappoint! I loved getting to know Emily Charlton and definitely want her as my new best friend. She's honest (to a fault), sarcastic, annoyingly thin, and beautiful. She abhors the suburbs and isn't shy to tell everyone that while drinking Starbucks and giving them the middle finger!
There are three main storylines in When Life Gives You Lululemons:
1. Emily is trying to save her career and survive time in the suburbs while her husband is away in Hong Kong. How will she survive the boredom? Will she be able to bounce her career back or is she hopelessly old and behind the times? Her career as an image consultant had me thinking Scandal but with hot celebrities instead of government insiders!
2. Miriam is new to being a stay-at-home mom and her identity is definitely in crisis. Does she want to go back to work? Can she stop binge eating in the middle of the night and get back to her pre-pregnancy body and marriage? Is her husband cheating on her? Miriam is the (super rich) down-to-earth friend in this novel.
3. Karolina is an ex supermodel who was in a loving marriage to a US Senator and raising their 12-year-old...until she was not. She was pulled over for suspected DUI, which caused her marriage to implode and forced her to move to Greenwich to escape the tabloids. Can she save her marriage? Get her son back? How will she survive the scandal?
I loved all three storylines and really enjoyed how Lauren Weisberger tied all of the storylines together. These characters aren't perfect, but they are fun to read about and live vicariously through. Much like many of my recent reads - this is isn't a high brow literacy read, but it is fun - the perfect book to take on a flight or bring to the beach or pool!
This book will make you laugh and also help you realize that maybe your problems are just a bit more manageable than you thought. I definitely recommend When Life Gives You Lululemons, especially if you enjoyed A Devil Wears Prada!
Nothing will ever live up to The Devil Wears Prada. While I enjoyed having Emily back as a character (and cameos by Miranda!), I didn’t really care much for the story itself. The characters weren’t overly likeable; I didn’t hate them but, rather, was more indifferent. It was all quite predictable. And the rich suburban stay at home mom trope was a little over done. It was very current with its references but fell a little flat with the girl power it seemed to be pushing. A good, fluffy beach read for sure, and a movie I’d watch, but nothing I’ll necessarily be thinking about any further.
I received an advanced copy from netgalley in return for an honest review.
