I absolutely loved this book. It is completely entertaining from the first page to the last. What I really love about Weisberger's characters is that they are so dynamic and multi-dimensional. Emily Charlton (AKA Miranda Preistly's first assistant) is back and at the center of this story. She is living in LA as a high profile celebrity image consultant.
When clients start dwindling, Emily takes refuge at her friend Miriam's house in the CT suburbs. When Karolina Hartwell- wife of a senator, ex Victoria's Secret model is arrested for drunk-driving with children in the car, the three woman will come together.
The story doesn't stop moving from the first page to the last. And while completely entertaining, the book also looks at love, life, friendship as well as some of the realities of getting older (we can't all stay 20 forever!). There are so great words of wisdom in these fun to read pages.
[Some spoilers ahead]. For the most part I liked this book, which took a rather sarcastic look at privileged white ladies. Peppered with pop culture references, the novel feels very 'now.' My largest problem was how out of character Emily seemed towards the end. I had a very difficult time believing that she would lapse on her birth control and accidentally get pregnant, then not realize she was pregnant for entire trimester. Furthermore, I don't subscribe to the trope that every woman needs to be a mom to 'complete' herself (which this book seems chock full of). I also thought most of the men in the book weren't particularly well developed. For a quick read, it gets the job done, but I think there was room to add a bit more substance.
I was so exited to get an early copy of this from NetGalley as I am a huge Laura Weisberger fan! Like her others, this book did not disappoint. I loved catching up with Emily from The Devil Wears Prada and I thought the new characters in the story were equally engaging. Although this is supposed to be a sequel, I think it can easily be read as a stand alone book. This will be a perfect summer read.
Amazing! Loved it! Can't say enough great things! I won't lie, I am a HUGE Devil Wears Prada fan and when I heard about this book I was dying to read it! When my wish was granted I stopped everything and read it morning, noon and night.
Emily is nasty, mean and I LOVE it! She tells it like it is and she doesn't care if she makes you cry. She'll just tell you to toughen up. HAHA
In this book we meet Karolina and Miriam and learn about their issues and they all start to meld together in this mean girls version of Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (minus the jeans of course that Emily would HATE!)
Emily's craziness comes in handy and we even have a little pop in of Miranda as well. I was in seventh heaven for sure.
There is so much dramas - DUI's, pregnancy, infertility, cheating, love, scandal and so much more. Lauren does not disappoint in this newest tale in the Devil Wears Prada series! (You know it's amazing when you can HEAR Emily's voice as you read her character)
I received an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This was an incredibly fun read! I love Lauren Weisberger's other books and was thrilled to read a book about Emily Charlton. I adored Emily from The Devil Wears Prada and Revenge Wears Prada, and was happy to see the continuation of her story.
The book primarily takes place in Greenwich, CT - a wealthy area where kids' birthday parties are like red carpet events, moms regularly have champagne lunches, and plastic surgery is a status symbol. Emily is now an image consultant living in LA, and takes on a new client on the East Coast - Karolina, a former model (now a senator's wife) arrested for a DUI while driving her son and his friends home. Karolina is close friends with a childhood friend of Emily's, and the book is told from the point of view of all three women.
Like all of Weisberger's books, the discussion of fashion is prevalent, but the dynamic of female friendships is closely examined in a way that was both fun and unexpected. I was pleasantly surprised by some of the plot points and finished the book in a day. I want more of Emily's story immediately!
Laugh-out-loud funny, with complex characters, this was a fun, breezy read. Perfect for the beach this summer!
Solid 3.5 stars. Entertaining, light read.
It was nice to revisit some characters from The Devil Wears Prada. Weisberger is excellent at what she does. Though I rolled my eyes at the facetiousness of some of the prose, she does keep the pace moving and the characters endearing.
I just love Lauren Weisberg and this is just a fun and heartwarming continuation of Emily's story. (We first met Emily when she was working as Miranda Priestly's assistant and bossing Andy around. Now Emily is a spin doctor living in LA but when one of the former RUNWAY models finds herself in a scandal, Emily heads to the upper-class 'burbs in Connecticut to help her. It is just the excuse Emily needs to flee the problems in her own life. Emily's childhood friend, Miriam, is also in the mix, having recently moved to Greenwich from New York City. She finds herself both fascinated and appalled by the other suburban moms she encounters. Readers will fall in love with each of these three women. The perfect book to take on vacation!
As a huge Devils Wears Prada Fan I was so excited to read more of my favorite character from that book, Emily's, story. And this did not disappoint! Emily is basically the star of this book and rightfully so. She is hysterical, and witty, and we all wish we had a friend so honest and straightforward, don't we?
After her run with Miranda, Emily is off on her own doing some 'Olivia Pope - Scandal" type work. And it suits her well. BUT there's some young competition (coincidentally named Olivia) in town that is threatening to steal most of Emily's high-profile clientele. Along with her childhood friend Miriam, drowning in all things mom-life suburbia, and Karolina, an ex-model Emily knew from her Runway days who has found herself in a bit of a scandal herself, this threesome of women bands together to overcome some serious life obstacles.
I thought the story was written really well and happily read it in two days - the plotline was pretty solid and kept me intrigued throughout - I was mad, I was sad, I laughed... and oh, did I mention Miranda?!?! Yep, shes back, too! There's even a cameo from Andy!
I enjoyed When Life Gives You Lululemons. Although I can't help but feeling that Miriam bored the hell out of me. Karolina a bit as well, but her story kept me on her. So, it's safe to say Emily clearly and deservedly took the spotlight on this one. Although, I find it extremely hard to believe Emily Charlton went to summer camp, would ever wear sweatpants, or, especially watch sappy crap on TV like This is Us, Emily is still the character we all know and love - and I still want to be her BFF!
Welcome to Greenwich, CT, where the lawns and the women are perfectly manicured, the Tito’s and sodas are extra strong, and everyone has something to say about the infamous new neighbor.
Let’s be clear: Emily Charlton, Miranda Priestly’s ex-assistant, does not do the suburbs. She’s working in Hollywood as an image consultant to the stars, but recently, Emily’s lost a few clients. She’s hopeless with social media. The new guard is nipping at her heels. She needs a big opportunity, and she needs it now.
Karolina Hartwell is as A-list as they come. She’s the former face of L’Oreal. A mega-supermodel recognized the world over. And now, the gorgeous wife of the newly elected senator from New York, Graham, who also has his eye on the presidency. It’s all very Kennedy-esque, right down to the public philandering and Karolina’s arrest for a DUI—with a Suburban full of other people’s children.
Miriam is the link between them. Until recently she was a partner at one of Manhattan’s most prestigious law firms. But when Miriam moves to Greenwich and takes time off to spend with her children, she never could have predicted that being stay-at-home mom in an uber-wealthy town could have more pitfalls than a stressful legal career.
Emily, Karolina, and Miriam make an unlikely trio, but they desperately need each other. Together, they’ll navigate the social landmines of life in America’s favorite suburb on steroids, revealing the truths—and the lies—that simmer just below the glittering surface. With her signature biting style, Lauren Weisberger offers a dazzling look into another sexy, over-the-top world, where nothing is as it appears.
Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU to Lauren Weisberger and the fantastic folks at Simon & Schuster for an advance copy of her newest novel, When Life Gives You Lululemons!
I have been a fan of Lauren Weisberger since The Devil Wears Prada and have been lucky enough to review some of her other new titles as well, but nothing can compare to the excitement of diving into this new book featuring the one and only EMILY CHARLTON. I could not wait to read what the brash and sassy Emily has been up to, and honestly Weisberger’s novels never disappoint.
Emily is still as sassy as ever, but now she has left Miranda and Runway to start her own image consulting business. When an up-and-coming consultant steals her clients and her husband is dragged away on a painfully long business trip, Emily ends up staying in Greenwich, CT with her old friend, Miriam. Emily needs to figure out what’s next for her life and career, Miriam needs to get her juju back after having kids and quitting her job as a partner at a Manhattan law firm, and Karolina needs someone to save her from the scandal she never saw coming.
These three women form friendships that eventually lead them all to exactly what they were looking for, even though none of them knew themselves what their next steps should be. Funny, touching, and written with Lauren Weisberger’s amazing voice, When Life Gives You Lululemons is the perfect summer read for 2018!
I was a little apprehensive to read this book since I didn't really care for the first sequel to The Devil Wears Prada, Revenge Wears Prada. But I'm happy to say When Life Gives you Lululemons was SO much better and I thought it was a super fun and enjoyable book (also, obsessed with the title of the book!). Is it as good as The Devil Wears Prada? Well no, but how often are sequels as good as the originals?
This book follows Emily Charlton's career after leaving Runway magazine, while also diving into the lives of a couple of her friends. Don't worry; I don't remember too many details about The Devil Wears Prada, but that's not really necessary to the enjoyment in this book, so long as you remember Emily was Miranda's driven and edgy assistant. Emily now runs her own business as an image consultant for celebs, married and living in LA. However, she's currently going through a rough patch with her clients when she visits her friend in the Connecticut suburbs. She ends up meeting Karolina Hartwell, former model turned wife to a prominent senator who is badly in need of an image makeover due to some shady business her sketchy husband has gotten her involved in. So, Emily sticks around CT for a while, feeling a bit like a fish out of water with all the Lululemon wearing mommies.
The book is actually focused on all three women fairly equally- Emily, her friend Miriam (who recently quit her high-powered lawyer job to be with her kids and is having trouble adjusting to the CT burbs), and Karolina. At first, I just wanted more Emily, but I ended up actually liking all of the women.
It's the kind of book you'll find yourself flying through and the perfect summer read for vacation or the beach or when you just need something a little bit lighter. It won't likely absolutely blow you away, but it will entertain you and you'll probably become a bit invested in the lives of the three main characters. Oh, and yes, Miranda makes a few appearances, playing a small role in the book. I thought it was the perfect amount and am glad Weisberger didn't try to force her in more. All in all, I'm happy I picked up this new book and can't wait to see what Weisberger releases next!
Wonderful send-up of Connecticut suburbanites and a bit of mystery - a perfect beach read.
When Life Gives You Lululemons is exactly what you would expect from the author of The Devil Wears Prada. Funny, quick characters that are so today, and I could not put it down. I have read two of Lauren Weisberger's books and expected a quick, beachy read. Exactly what it is. The character of Emily from the Devil Wears Prada continues in this book. You, however, don't need to read The Devil Wears Prada to understand this book at all.
The story takes place in Greenwich CT - she nailed it. All Starbucksy and pilatesy. The plot follows three women- Emily, Miriam and Karolina. The book centers around the character Karolina, married to the future President, watching her life fall apart . Her friends rally around her to help figure out how to put things back in place. Emily is the Ray Donavan of the image consultant world.
If you are looking for a dense read, move along. Taking it to the beach is exactly why it was written. A solid 3 1/2 stars but 4 stars since she nailed Greenwich.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers, Simon and Schuster, for an advanced early read of this book, in exchange for an honest opinion.
I’ve read most of Lauren Weisberger’s books, and I generally enjoy them. They’re light and fluffy, and they’re almost always super quick reads. They’re brain candy, the kind of books I need to read in the middle of more serious ones so I don’t go crazy. This one is no different, though it wasn’t entirely what I expected.
When Life Gives You Lululemons is a follow-up to Weisberger’s hit novel-turned-blockbuster The Devil Wears Prada. I loved the movie version and liked the book, as well, so when the publisher reached out and offered me the chance to review WLGYL, I was ecstatic. I haven’t even been reading much lately and I still got my act together to read and review it quickly.
The book follows Emily, Miranda’s former assistant, several years down the road. Emily, if you’ll recall, was sassy and absolutely obsessed with fashion. I expected that Emily when I started this book, and to be fair, she still has a little sass, though not as much as before. What we get here, though, is less sassy-fashion-forward Emily and more mid-30s-what-am-I-doing-with-my-life Emily, who’s considerably less fun. She’s married, she’s essentially a less-well-known version of Olivia Pope who keeps losing clients to someone also named Olivia.
Unsurprisingly, the book is told from multiple perspectives, including Emily, Karolina (model-turned-senator’s-wife) and Miriam (frumpyish attorney-turned-Greenwich-housewife), both of whom are moms and in the middle of their own issues. It had a totally different feel than I was expecting. Some of the book spent time poking fun at the uber-rich Greenwich housewives, while some dealt with handling a scandal. Miranda makes a cameo and we’re shown some of the less upstanding sides of some of the main characters.
That’s the book in a nutshell. It’s entertaining, but not spectacular. It’s more mature in some ways, with all of our main characters having families and less glamorous issues to deal with, but it’s also the same shallow sort of story you might expect, where sex and weight and haircuts are important issues. It’s not surprising; it’s just not all that exciting.
Would I recommend reading this? Sure, if you’re in the mood for a light summer read that doesn’t require much thought. It’s a quick read and entertaining enough. I wouldn’t go out of my way to seek it out, but if you’re a fan of Weisberger’s already, you’ll likely find this book to be exactly what you’d expect.
I rated this book three stars.
Thank-you for the most fun and refreshing book I've read this year! I thoroughly enjoyed every chapter, chapter title (Vodka and Tampons was probably my favorite, but there were so many to choose from!) and each character perspective. I felt entrenched in the lives of these women and I'm sorry to say I finished the book and I'm not actually friends with them!
Miriam is your professional turned mommy and homemaker, who enjoys her new life, although not as ecstatically as she envisioned. Karolina is the gorgeous, classy, screwed over former model in the midst of personal crisis. Emily is the edgy, no nonsense, calls it like she sees it celebrity problem solver who is the backbone of the story. The plot is multifaceted, told from three different perspectives and life experiences, which leaves you with emotions from sympathy to rage and sadness to hilarious hysterics. This is a must read for anyone who likes a bit of laughter and sass to balance out the nonsense of the daily grind.
So I had pre-ordered “When Life Gives You Lululmons…” on Amazon- I mean, hello? The name? And lucky me- I see it on Netgalley and cross my fingers as I request. I dive in as soon as I get it and BOOM! It hits me. This is a continuation of Emily’s story from “The Devil Wears Prada”… did I just hit the jackpot or what?!
And it’s in Greenwich, CT sooo just across the sound from me here in Long Island- loves it! Emily is baaaaaack, b*tches! She is living the Hollywood life as a image consultant to celebrities in her post-MP life. Her husband situation left a bit to be desired (IMO) but to each their own? Cool girl Emily is struggling in the biz. She is losing clients repeatedly to a younger, more social media savy version of herself. What’s a girl to do?
Next up is Karolina, former model slash trophy wife with a senator aspiring to be the prez for a husband. What could go wrong there? Definitely not a DUI with a car full of children. Can someone ever recover from something like that?!
And then we have Miriam, former prestigious lawyer turned SAHM living the cushy Connecticut life, who is friends with both Emily and Karolina and becomes the third musketeer in the shenanigans that follow.
This felt very Real Housewives of Greenwich and I was very okay with that. The parties each more extravagant than the last and the children overbooked as over-privileged children always seem to be. Despite the ostentatiousness of this east coast bubble, the trio seem (somewhat) relatable and actually funny. You would want friends like this.
Weisberger does it again. We all want a sneak peek behind the scenes of the rich and famous and she gives us that VIP experience.
Read somewhere that some of her other books are spin-offs from Devil Wears Prada so may need to set aside a weekend for a little LW binge reading fest. Perhaps poolside with a mojito this summer after a Soul Cycle class in the Hamptoms. Perhaps.
Big thanks to Simon & Schuster and Netgalley and of course, Lauren Weisberger, for this advanced reader copy in exchange for a fair and honest review.
I LOVED this book! When Life Gives You Lululemons was 100% what I was hoping it would be. Funny, charming, and I could not put it down. I am a fan of Lauren Weisberger and have read all her books-with The Devil Wears Prada as my most favorite so I was thrilled to have the character of Emily continue in this book. (Side note: I would love to know the story of Emily- how she met her hubby etc too. She is such a fun character!)
You do not need to read The Devil Wears Prada to understand this book at all- it can completely stand alone but you can appreciate the character of Emily much more and who Miranda is.
The story takes place in Greenwich CT - as knowing Greenwich well I can say the author nailed much of the vibe of the area! The plot follows three women- Emily, Miriam and Karolina. The book centers around the character Karolina who is watching her life fall apart around her and needs her friends to help figure out what is happening.
I had a hard time putting this book down and it was one of the best reads of the year so far! Will be looking forward to more from this author to come! Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for an advanced early read of this book.
Okay, full disclosure: I was prepared to hate this book. I went into it thinking mean thoughts about LW and the fact that she was trying to use the success of The Devil Wears Prada to further this book, how it was in no way going to be any good, etc etc...and I could not be happier to tell you, I WAS SO WRONG. I LOVED IT.
Now, to be fair, this is not the book to read if you want "serious fare." This is the year's perfect guilty-pleasure-beach-read. This book had celebrities (both real and fictional), and gossip about those celebrities, and even a cameo from Andy Sachs herself, not to mention more insanity re: the witch, Miranda Priestly. The ending was completely unexpected and completely fabulous. In short, this will probably be one of the best books you read all year, especially if you enjoyed the first two (and really, who didn't?)
Final verdict: 5/5 stars!
I seriously could not put this down! I was a little worried to hear that the The Devil Wears Prada series was continuing since I didn't really love Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns, but this was excellent! Emily was always my favorite character in the series, so maybe taking Andie out of the mix was the win here. The setting of Greenwich, CT was genius (rich mommies!!) and the introduction of Miriam and Karolina as main characters was also a hit for me. I loved this book and I hope there will be more of this crew in the future!
Thank you to Simon & Schuster for an advance copy. All opinions are my own
I was given an advanced copy of When Life Gives You Lululemons by NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
I read The Devil Wears Prada years ago when I was working in advertising. For someone who has worked in that kind of environment, the actions of Miranda Priestly were comical and way too close to home. Her 1st Assistant Emily was a character that I was very much familiar with. The take no prisoners, slightly sweet, mostly bitchy woman whom you never want to cross.
In When Life Gives You Lululemons, we find Emily relocated to LA and working as an image consultant to the rich and famous. You know, the ones who go around picking up after Britney Spears, Justin Beiber, Mel Gibson and try to fix whatever malarkey they have gotten into. When a younger, hipper image consultant starts stealing her best (aka worst offenders) clients, Emily doesn’t know what to do.
Enter Karolina Hartwell, the mega-supermodel wife of a Senator with presidential aspirations. When Karolina is falsely accused of drinking and driving with children in her car, the happy life she thought she had begins to unravel. While visiting her friend Miriam, Emily meets Karolina and decides to help her. While trying to get to the bottom of things, they find that the Senator is the one to set her up so that he can divorce her to advance his career.
Between unraveling the clues and trying to figure out how to deal with suburban Connecticut residents and their weird ways, Emily gets her “image consultant” mojo back.
I enjoyed the book but I believe I will never move to suburban Connecticut. Those people are crazy!
