I had ZERO intentions on ever reading this when the title kept appearing on both my GR and Instagram feeds. While I’ll give props where they are due admit that title is über catchy and 5-Star worthy all by its lonesome, merely the mention of the word “Lululemon” tends to make me a little eye twitchy. But then I saw that it was a DWP follow-up and featured EMILY no less. God how I loved bitchy Emily and it reminded me of all the book-reading good times I used to have back when I still had a waistline and some estrogen. So despite my best efforts to be one and done when it comes to books in a series I found myself breaking my own rule for like the umpteenth time this year and.
Okay, so the story here is about Emily who has made her way from the first assistant’s desk at Runway to a “Rachel Zoe” of sorts who not only makes her clients look good, but covers their tracks when they do things that make them look bad. Emily’s clients have been dropping like flies for a newer make and model and she finds herself unable to put a positive spin on her most famous client’s most recent escapade. Emily decides to head away from the Hills and to her old friend Miriam’s place in Greenwich. It’s there that she will learn how to navigate a different sort of water – one full of overpriced yoga pants and overachieving stay-at-home moms. It might even be the place to revamp her career and flip the script on the story behind Miriam’s friend Yolanda’s DUI and crumbling marriage.
What can I say? This is the summer of the Mom Com for me. Apparently I’ve matured a little as well because I sort of found Emily to be insufferable for quite a good chunk of this third go ‘round. The good news is I made a potential new BFF in Miriam. And Karolina? I channeled my girl crush and pictured a younger version of one my fave former housewhores - YOLANDA - (and you just KNOW that smarmy David Foster would probably try to sell some bullshit to the tabloids in an attempt to not make him look like the vile uggo he is just like Karolina’s husband). I didn’t even have to feel bad about my fixation/addition to the Hos either : )
“I feel like we just stepped into an episode of Housewives. Only without all the screaming. And with much better taste.”
The only other thing that didn’t quite work for me ???? Miranda. Go figure, right? Probably some wrongreading happened, but seriously there was zero chance my cold dead heart was going to go for that ending.
Still an absolute delightful trip down memory lane for me and one I’ll happily round my 3.5 Stars UP rather than down for a change.
ARC provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you, NetGalley!
I’m so sad this book is over! I’ve read all over Lauren’s books and this was by far my favorite. You know the book where you just want it to keep going because you’ll never find another book you enjoy as much? This was that for me! Read this book even if you haven’t read her others, you won’t be disappointed!
Lauren Weisberger is one of these authors I always like to read, no matter what she writes. I love her writing and her characters. Two years ago, she managed to make me interested in tennis with her book The Singles Game and now she is back with one of my favorite characters from her novels. When I was reading The Devils Wears Prada and Revenge Wears Prada my favourite character wasn’t Andy, the protagonist, but Miranda Priestly’s other assistant, Emily Charlton. I enjoyed her determination and her fierceness and I am really happy the author wrote a book focusing on her.
No more calls in the middle of the night, no more demanding, unclear, and crazy requests. No more Miranda Priestly and Runway. And no more New York because Emily and her husband Miles have moved to sunny Los Angeles. Now Emily is a celebrity consultant but she is losing her clients to the younger competition. She is still though and sassy as usual, but also caring (even if she tries to not show it too much). After she flies to New York for a consultation and she is fired before she is even hired, Emily decides to spends a few weeks in Greenwich, Connecticut, with her friend Miriam.
Miriam and Emily met in college. Miriam was a successful lawyer, but after leaving her job, having three children, her husband selling his start-up, and the family moving from Manhattan to Greenwich, Miriam starts to doubt her decisions, her marriage, and her life in general.
At 37, Karolina is still a beautiful woman. A former model and the wife of a senator rumored to be the next president, Karolina’s life focuses on her son. Her life turns upside down when she is arrested for a DUI and her husband divorces her and banishes her to Greenwich. She knows she’s been set up and she is ready to do anything to clear her name and get her son back.
Between baby showers and sex toys parties, these three women will rely on each other to get what they want. I loved reading about their friendship and how they support each other. These three women are completely different from each other and yet their friendship is true and loyal.
Full of hilarity, unexpected moments, and engaging and likabeble characters, THE WIVES is a riveting novel about strong female friendship and women empowerment. If you liked The Devil Wears Prada, you are going to really love this novel. It is the perfect summer read to enjoy by the poolside (if you can)
We first met Emily in The Devil Wears Prada. Glamorous, sharp as a tack, and always willing to speak her mind, Emily is now a stylist to the rich and famous in California. When a friend needs her help, she heads to Connecticut and takes charge. It was great to see a glimpse of the powerful Miranda Priestly, and we even find out what Andrea Sachs is up to these days! Fun, sexy, and interesting, I read this book in one afternoon. I definitely recommend it to others!
A fun, light read perfect for summer. The book begins with Emily on New Years Eve in Los Angeles. Emily and her husband, Miles, are at a party. Emily is musing on aging (thanks to the young bikini clad bodies frolicking in the pool) when she gets a phone call from an unfamiliar number. It is a representative for Rizzo, a new up and coming singer, the new Bieber. He makes an unfortunate choice to be seen in a Nazi costume and they want Emily to come smooth things over. Work her magic.
The next chapter introduces Miriam. Miriam is out jogging, observing all the women running their Lululemon leggings. She doesn’t know many people because she has only been in Greenwich for five months.
In the third chapter we met Karolina. Karolina is driving a van filled with twelve year old boys, all friends of her stepson, Harry. When she is pulled over by the police, they find empty champagne bottles in the car and she is arrested!
From then on we follow the three main characters through their adventures in Greenwich.
As I said before, this is a fun, light read. Perfect for the beach or sitting on your back porch sipping some sweet tea.
I received an ARC of this book.
Classic "chick lit" (is it ok to say that anymore???)! Perfect beach read - you immediately sink into this story as soon as you begin reading.
This book totally redeems Weisberger after the lukewarm-at-best sequel to the original. Andy is but a blip on the radar and good riddance if Emily is the character that inspired Weisberger to her former wit and verve. A fun and entertaining page-turner that provides a tongue-in-cheek commentary on the Connecticut suburbs only slightly less toothsome than the original skewering of the Vogue fashion community in the original.
So I LOVED The Devil Wears Prada and read the book and have watched the movie like 100 times. Seeing that Weisberger had a sequel about Emily, the beloved first assistant that you wanted to hate yet LOVED, I could not wait to jump right in and devour this book.
Money can't buy you happiness and you see that as the story unfolds of three friends... in their thirties, with or without children, working or stay at home moms on their journey of life including all of the struggles that women face with body image, social image, and matters of the heart.
I adored Emily in The Devil Wears Prada and its wonderful to see her married, in the next chapter of her life while still the snarky smart ass she was back then. Even more so, seeing her bonding with other women and seeing her in the role of a true friend was a complete delight.
When Life Gives You Lululemons is hugely entertaining with laugh out loud moments but also moments that are completely relatable.
This is a most definite fun summer beach read that is pure escapism at its finest. I haven't read chick-lit in a long time and reading this book reminds me of why I need more of it in my life for its wit and lightheartedness that put a smile on my face.
When I heard that there was a third installment of The Devil Loves Prada series coming out I knew I had to read it. Although it is the 3rd book in the series it was written as a stand alone novel. So no worries if you haven't read the first two, that is definitely not a prerequisite!
When Life Gives You Lululemons centers on Emily from the first two books. Two new main characters (Karolina and Miriam) were introduced and I quickly came to like them. They are definitely women I would be friends with! This book was a fun and easy read. Perfect for the beach, pool, on the plane, or even just a lazy day at home. I adored it and am hoping for a fourth installment!
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for a digital ARC. All opinions are my own.
Hilarious, irreverent and occasionally a little bit sad - if you enjoyed The Devil Wears Prada, you'll like this one too! The women were relatable while also a bit aspirational (at times) and I felt like I was their friend hearing a long story I missed out on.
This book was a lot of fun for fans OR newcomers to The Devil Wears Prada series! The title of the book alone cracks me up every time I read it. Wonderful summer read.
This book restored me after a very troubling time in my life. It made my week, when I initially read it. I lost it all a month ago, it included a relationship. I definitely needed a book like this to help me believe again, believe in myself and realize that I do matter. Yes, I have my lovely children, career, and family. I'm definitely a Karolina and have been blessed with my share of Emily's as of late. Dynamic characters, relatable subject matter mixed with fashion, drama, and glamour. Thank you Simon & Schuster for the gifted e-copy to review.
"When Life Gives You Lululemons" was a light, quick and easy read! I really enjoyed seeing Emily's progression in this book. This book is exactly what I expected from the author of "Devil Wears Prada" but you don't necessarily have to read her other books to enjoy this one. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs a break from some of the "heavier" books out there. Definitely a beach read! Take a seat on the beach, ice cold drink in hand and get lost in this book!
Very enjoyable read! Having read The Devil Wears Prada was helpful - but don't think absolutely necessary to enjoy When Life Gives you Lululemons. The title of the book lets you know right away that you will be in the suberbs- a place Emily doesn't care for very much! The book centers around three friends - and how they help each other find what's important. Emily is narcissistic & bossy - with a heart of gold (even if she doesn't want it!) with a beginning to fail business helping celebrities out of trouble. Miriam is trying life as a stay at home mom to three under 5 after being a hard working and successful lawyer. Lina is a former supermodel who's current politician husband wants to be President - and isn't about to let anything stand in his way. And when he decides he needs a younger, more politically connected wife - he stoops to new lows to get rid of his current wife. Can Emily get her business back on track by helping Lina? Can Miriam get herself together enough to be the friend & lawyer Lina needs? Can Lina survive the lies & mud-slinging dished out by her horrible husband? (And IF you've read or seen The Devil Wears Prada - get ready for a cameo or two from the deliciously wicked Miranda Priestly!)
Being a fan of "The Devil Wears Prada," and many other Lauren Weisberger books, I enjoyed this read. It was fun to see how Emily matures years later. I could picture Emily saying the words that Weisberger describes. Hope they make this one into a movie too and have Emily Blunt play Emily again. And I also enjoyed the other characters Karolina and Miriam. Weisberger knows how to write chicklit like no other, she is a pro! Definitely add it to your summer book list.
I always think about how much a title can influence my initial thoughts about a book. Because this had Lululemons in the title, I thought it was going to be a silly story. That was not the case.
Emily, Karolina and Miriam. Three women whose lives connect when Karolina is accused of driving under the influence. Together, the three of them must find a way to help Karolina get her life back on track. Along the way, we discover that Emily and Miriam are not without their own issues.
This is my first foray into the Devil Wears Prada series and my first read from this author. I liked all three characters. I also liked how the author showed these three women as being supportive of each other. The story was a bit of a wild ride at times. It has peeked my curiosity into wanting to read this author's other books.
I received this book from Simon & Schuster via Netgalley.
Through a series of of unfortunate events, three women with very different lives are brought together to help each other navigate careers and relationships. They quickly learn that judging a book by its cover won't always tell the whole story. Only when they trust each other do they see how they find ways to help themselves.
Once again, Emily, our favorite love to hate character entertains and delights readers. This is the perfect read for a smile, a laugh and to feel good about women helping women suceed.
This was a fun summer read. Perfect for plane or pool. Loved the characters
Enjoyed the story. Look forward to the next book
I. Love. Emily! I don't read a ton of chick lit but I may have to change that now. WLGYL had me laughing ot loud while still being nice and light.
My rating scale:
5☆ - I loved this book and it brought out true emotion in me (laughter, anger, a good cry, etc)
4☆ - I loved this book.
3☆ - I liked this book.
2☆ - I didn't really care for this book.
1☆ - I did not like this book at all and probably did not finish it.
Funny and smart and witty with lots of name-dropping and outrageous depictions of the rich and famous. Or sometimes just rich. Great characters and a fun story. Perfect beach read!
