This is a book filled with dark satire, vampires, humans and relaity tv what more could you want.
Immersed in a reality TV show where the winner gains a spot in the immortal ranks, this hunger games...but darker, and i loved every second of it
What a great read. I really enjoyed this book.It was dark and creepy in the best of way.
Creature of the Night by Anne Stinnett is a book I requested from NetGalley and the review is voluntary. I adored this crazy book! A satire about reality shows taking it a step further. This is a world where vampires are part of the way of life. They exist and have laws to protect them and humans in the human society. But some things never change like the lust for blood, on both sides...such as reality TV. Similar to survivor shows where some contestants are voted out, challenges, chats with contestants, this is what this book is about but with the vamp holding the contest and humans wanting to be turned into one. They start with 12 contestants, and they get down to two which are turned, those two fight until there is only one. There is so much dry humor in it! It is very clever, witty, and irresistible! The people are more blood thirsty an the vamps! I had a smile on my face a great deal of the time. I could see this as a movie! Craziness and grossness but it was so true if ever happened!
This is a black comedy satire of reality tv combined with game show. The extra push here is that the contestants are vying to be transformed into a vampire and the losers will die in the challenges. There are 12 contestants, a 4 vampire judging panel and a multitude of tv viewers and audience members - all of whom are given a POV role. This becomes too many viewpoints for the reader to assimilate. I couldn't remember who was who, other than the vampire panel who were sufficiently distinct and low in number so as to allow true characterizations to emerge. Of the contestants, a few stood out (Lola,Donovan, Stewart, Ollie and Kannon immediately come to mind). But the rest were frustrating because I couldn't remember their character details. This was also very much true for the tv audience members. I do wish Cyri was fleshed out more. I certainly understand that the plot of the book requires 8 to 12 contestants but I would suggest a listing at the beginning of the book- a cast of characters- that can be referred to as necessary. Just a thought.
However, this being said, I enjoyed the book. The author has a sharp, incisive humour which translates nicely in this black comedy satire. I would certainly read more work by her in the future.
My thanks to NetGalley for providing me with an eARC in exchange for my honest review.
A scathing satire of the kind of hunger for fame that makes reality tv so ridiculous. Consumerism, capitalism, and narcissism (that that even those horrible Kardashians would respect) with added vampires.
There were a few too many pov’s. 12 contestant’s, plus multiple viewers with not a lot of payoff. Focusing on an audience member on and off for 75% of the book, but then abandoning her felt kinda lazy. And while I understand why there is no clear protagonist, I mean, you don’t want to give away th “winner”, there were characters that could easily have been lost.
I would have loved to see some, I suppose, situating of the viewer pov’s. Time, date, place, giving more grounding to them.
All in all, a clever, harsh, funny, satirical, and very scary book. Yet not because of the vampires. It’s an all too human horror *shudder*
