The battles of World War One are difficult synopsize for numerous reasons. Evans overcomes these better than most. The War was overly deadly due to poor battlefield communications, rock-solid egos, and the advent of new weaponry, and a commensurate lack of flexible modern tactics. The major problem I had with this book was with the very poorly laid out maps which were too few and far between. They did not look like they were drawn by a professional.
