I would like to thank netgalley and Dover Publications for a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Beautiful photographs.
I recommend this book -- especially the paperback or a hardback version. The pictures and written details of the amazing origami boxes are done perfectly. The different options are inspirational and complete instructions helpful. If you enjoy origami or what to start this hobby this is your book.
I can't review this book. I was unable to get this downloaded because of issue with the graphic aspects and interaction with aDOBE Digital Editions. I am very disappointed because I really was looking forward to trying out some of the creative aspects that this book promised.
This is a wonderful well crafted book featuring origami models from a renown master. The book begins with a timeline biography of the artist. Next is a section that explains the symbols used and diagrams each of the different folds used in origami projects, There are twenty-one origami box projects diagrammed with instructions.
The drawings are arranged step-by-step and the instructions are easy to follow. I read elsewhere that the photography is amazing but unfortunately it is not visible in the epub copy that I received for review. This book is stunning even without the photography. The designs are varied and well diagrammed and executed in the drawings. Origami boxes have a lot of uses and these are some of the most beautiful examples I have seen. I believe a beginner could chose this book and accomplish the designs. I also think the more experienced crafters will enjoy the designs as well.
Amazing Origami Boxes is another new tutorial book of 20 designs from Origami master Tomoko Fuse. Her specialty is modular origami (sculptures made from multiple pieces of paper, fitted together), and this book is no exception. There are some very traditional forms which will be familiar to most people (square box with flaps, offering box, crane box, etc). There are also some really beautiful modern shaped containers which will certainly appeal. There are tutorials for 8 flower based shapes which would make spectacular nut/candy cups for a special table settting (or wedding).
As is usual for this author (kudos to her translation and editing team!) the tutorials are all accessible and the drawings are very clear and well illustrated and concise.
At the very beginning of the book are the symbol explanations and the short tutorials for the traditional folds. This will help complete newbies to be able to follow the later tutorials. There are (in my opinion) none of the pieces in this book which would be beyond a keen beginner's abilities. This is mostly down to the perfect illustrations and sparely written instructions. There are some really impressive folds in this book, including an almost tesseract/space defying box she calls Double Cube Box.
Dover publications has long been a standard bearer for beautifully illustrated well made crafts books. This one is no exception. Everything is top notch. The translations are perfect (if slightly whimsically poetic). The photography is lush, crisp, and colorful. It's an all around joy. This would make a perfect gift for both enthusiasts and origami-curious beginners.
In fact, though I received a free e-book copy of this book for review purposes; I've already purchased a copy for my origami mad daughter.

This book was my first origami book. I enjoyed the beautiful pictures but I found the instructions a bit hard to understand. I believe there are around 20 pieces to try so lots of variety. I picked the flower to make and found the folds never same quite as the book suggested. If you are curious about origami I would give this book a try.

I love making origami, and little origami boxes are one of my soft spots since I used to make them all the time back when I was in high school. They always have a special place in my heart because a friend and I used to write letters and turn them into origami before delivering them to each other. It's been a while since I sat down and made origami when I saw this book and took it as a sign that it was time to revisit.
Tomoko's book is very informative and has a variety of origami boxes from simple to complex. The pictures are absolutely gorgeous. The instructions are clear and include a combination of graphs and written instructions as well as a instruction key before the very first origami box. It's great that the crafting level involved is listed for each box so that one can work their way up or choose a complex design if they are already at a higher skill level. The instructions are easy to follow, and any questions that one may have can be answered by looking at the written instructions that go hand in hand with the graphs. One really can't go wrong with this book.
This book may look plain from the outside, but it has great illustrations inside. It is written so that even novice paper folders can make the projects listed. Plus the projects seem to be arranged easiest to hardest. This is one of the better laid out origami books I have seen and I look forward to trying many projects.
Tomoko is a highly qualified person to write about the subject of origami indeed as a highly skilled origami maker herself, this book shares her tips from how to fold in certain ways, to creating some wonderful little creations yourself as she teaches us how in simple to follow steps with images to follow too.
Origami is a creative outlet for sure but is also a highly colourful one that anyone can enjoy. The book shows off a beautiful array or papers used depicted in the images and paper selection and choice is a huge part of creating these makes as it makes them more visually intriguing.
I liked the plain ness of the book just being a white simple background with clear back text and all the colour coming from the papers used for the boxes as it attracted the eye to the art form subject we're to focus on.
Many thanks to the publishers for allowing me to review this book for them!
Amazing Origami Boxes includes 20 origami models with instructions and diagrams. There are some really cool ones included - I can tell just from the cover! The book starts with the biography of Tomko Fuse - "the queen of modular origami" who wrote this book and came up with these amazing designs. The book has 3 degrees of difficulty - Medium, Medium to Advanced and Advanced. Each one is noted by 1, 2 or 3 dots. There are also guides to the different kinds of folds that you will find in the instructions. All of these designs seem to be a bit over my head, so I guess I am not quite at "Medium" level yet - probably still a "beginner". The basket with triangular handles looks amazing, I thought the cube box was awesome - then I turned the page and there was a DOUBLE cube box... My mind is blown. And the Tulip cup and Rose box may be some of the pretties origami I've ever seen. Makes me wish I had some paper to try it out - even though I know I would end up failing miserably.
I received a free e-copy of this book in order to write this review. I was not otherwise compensated.
A book for experienced origami aficionados from a world renowned professional. As with most Dover Publications craft books, basic instructions precede the more detailed instructions for each project. Color photographs for each project are provided. However, the line drawing illustrations with arrows can be confusing, especially with some of the more complicated projects. Projects in this book are coded as "medium," "medium to advanced," and "advanced." And they are beautiful. However, there is nothing here for the beginner. It would have been helpful to see actual step-by-step photographs for at least a few of the projects, in addition to the line illustrations.
Amazing Origami Boxes by Tomoko Fuse includes a few simple and then much more complex techniques for making origami boxes. The rectangle and square boxes are the easiest but the other various shapes are very lovely so the craft book inspires you to try these boxes too.
One of the best features is a clear guide at the beginning explaining each term and fold. Then the illustrations give clear directions with excellent diagrams. I especially liked the photographs of the finished box. This was very helpful to see the end result if done correctly. I won’t say that I found many of these designs easy but with practice this is an excellent guide.
ARC - I voluntarily offered to review this book with no obligations and my opinions are honest
Origami is such an art form that can be both fun and beautiful.
The book gave good instructions.
There was a big selections to choose from.
I like that there was illustrations along the way.
Loved the book!
I received this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.
I just adore it when new Origami books hit Netgalley. My boyfriend and I are big lovers of origami (my boyfriend especially is pretty dang awesome with it). So yesterday I decided to open the book, get the origami papers and grab my boyfriend and get to folding.
We tried out various different models, from cute to practical. We wanted to do more, but it was already quite late so we will have to get back to the book and try a few others later.
The book's instructions are quite clear for most of the time, though some of them had us scratching our heads and checking how the final product looks. Some reactions while folding: "Whut?" "Um, wait, how?" "WTH?" "What kind of magics is this?"
But again, most are really good to follow and it was quite fun to see the box become real, and some looked even prettier in real life than in the pictures.
There is a wide variety of boxes, from tiny open boxes to boxes that can close to flowers and cats. I definitely love that there were so many varieties to pick from. Though it was also quite hard as we couldn't try out all of them and had to select the prettiest ones. And then it was another hard choice as so many were pretty. :P
The photographs are very well made, often showing various sides to a project. Which really helped when we couldn't figure out the instructions.
All in all, we really enjoyed this book and I would recommend it to all who like origami.
There isn't much to say about this one. It is a book full of origami instructions. There are three difficult levels in the book: Medium, Medium to Advanced, and Advanced. The image instructions are pretty clear but if you also rely on text, that is limited (not every step has text and those that do aren't always clear enough). While there is some variety (the kitty is especially cute) this is all boxes and there is only so much you can do with boxes before it feels repetitive and boring. Great if you give a lot of small gifts and want to do something special with each one.
I have always loved art and especially the art of folding paper, so getting a book that shows me how to create some amazing pieces was a bonus. I voluntarily requested this book in exchange for an honest review and found the digital edition format much easier to understand, the kindle version had pictures jumbled up. This is a great book for anyone interested in origami.
I absolutly tought this book was amazing. Very easy to use, simple ideas. If you have a creative mind and like origami, this is for you. I created boxes for kids to put little surprises in them. It was the cutest thing. The book is gorgeous.
Origami has interested me since childhood but these 20 original designs take it to a new level. Tomoko Fuse has achieved recognition for her modular designs and these intricate boxes and dishes show why.
This is not a beginners book. However, the instructions are clear and although I think practicing on cheap paper is a good idea before using the beautiful, decorative origami papers shown in the colorful illustrations, at least most of them should be possible for anyone with patience and prepared to practice.
If you have no experience with origami, I suggest an easier beginner's book would be better to start, but some of the square boxes are reasonably easy and once those are mastered, the harder ones should be doable. As I said, practice with cheap paper first. Common printer paper can be squared by folding it over and removing the excess. When you've got the hang of a design, then the origami papers will make it beautiful.
I first came into contact with origami books in my hometown thirty years ago, which happens to have a Japanese book store. Ever since then I have loved origami because of the beautiful Japanese origami papers that are an art in itself and the challenge to make intricate three dimensional objects out of a single square of paper. Tomoke Fuse's book features beautiful origami boxes for different skill levels. There are a lot of boxes you can master pretty fast, even as a beginner. You also do not need to be intimidated by the complexity of some of the more advanced objects because the folding instructions are very detailed. All basic folds are explained at the beginning of the book. The instructions for the individual boxes come with visuals that are immensely helpful to understand how to fold the objects. If you make precise folds and do not rush the process you will succeed with even more complex boxes. I recommend using origami paper right from the beginning instead of practicing with regular paper first. Origami paper is thinner than regular paper and thus easier to fold multiple times. Because it is precious, it also makes me concentrate better when I make the folds. From my experience, the visual instructions in Japanese origami books are so good, you can understand them, even if the book is totally written in Japanese. This book is just like that, and it is written in English. I just made 5 different boxes from this book and I am pleased with how beautiful they are. They are sitting on a side table in my house and it makes me happy just to look at them every time I walk by.
Amazing Origami Boxes is a lovely book for anyone keen on crafting their own paper boxes. The text offers a wide variety of styles to suit any occasion. I am not an origami expert, and looking through the instructions, at times I got a little lost. However, that could simply be my inexperience. Those more used to following such directions would probably have less trouble. On the whole, if you are a beginner, I would think a little trial and error on plain paper would be needed first, until you get the hang of it. In any case, this is a well-presented volume sure to please crafting enthusiasts.
