Dense but fascinating. I'm really into the early conservation movement but I wasn't familiar with Fannye Cook. I'm so glad that she's getting her due in this book!
This was an interesting look at a woman conservationist in an era and region when that wasn't a common thing. I enjoyed the weaving in of other similar events going on at the time but thought there was a lot of "must have" in relation to what Fannye thought or felt or even the possibilities of meeting certain public figures. That could have been edited differently. I love to read about local and lesser known historical figures. They are who make up our daily lives.
Fannye Cook must have been a very fascinating woman! What a lot of memorable people she met! Those included Teddy Roosevelt, John Muir and Eudora Welty as well as hundreds of other luminaries outlined in this biography.
Her work establishing the Fish and Game Commission in Mississippi as well as her museum work and promotion of understanding the importance of wild plants and animals was simply outstanding. We are all richer because of her tireless efforts.
I’m thankful to NetGalley for a digital release of this book
