Verity is a spy... and she's been captured. She's writing her confession. She's actually telling her story during the war with her best friend. It takes a minute to get into the whole thing, but hang in there and you will likely be pleasantly surprised at what develops!
A young adult WWII story following best friends after their plane crashes in Nazi-occupied France. "Verity" is captured by the Gestapo and begins to weave a tale of who she is, how she met Maddie, and why she left Maddie in the plane wreckage. An absolutely un-put-downable story. It is part of a series but it can be read as a standalone.
Code Name Verity changed the way I look at historical fiction. I read this one for a committee I was on at the time, after it was published, which is why I didn't originally leave a review. Though it takes a certain kind of reader to connect with it, those who do hold it in high regard.
I read this title a few years ago but I still remember it as being an important and good read. A great WWII young adult historical fiction story full of suspense and an amazing twist.
I wanted to like this book so much; unfortunately, I just couldn't get through it.
Would I still recommend it during readers advisory? Absolutely! Just because I wasn't the correct reader for it, doesn't mean it won't be the perfect book for someone else.
Code Name Verity is one of those books that has become a classic, must read books for teenagers and adults alike. The plot and the reader are parallel. The characters are in the dark as is the reader and it builds suspense in such a unique way that is rare in YA historical novels. I loved it and I hope that it makes young readers search out more about WWII history!
Code Name Verity was an amazing reading experience! I wish I could go back and read it for the first time. Believable characters and an amazing twist that left me thinking for days.
Unfortunately, I didn't download this in time back in 2012 when I originally requested it. My interests have changed asI no longer primarily read YA, so I have no plans at this to read or review this title. Thank you.
As I began this novel, I was so irritated with the narrator! She antagonizes Natzis for goodness sake! BUT, when the twist was revealed, I couldn't put it down! Yes, this is a bit of a slow burn at the beginning, but the payoff is ultimately so worth it. Hand to readers who are willing to stick with it and enjoy a good spy novel in a historical setting.
I read this a good while ago, but I remember it being such an impactful, important novel. The story was so raw and real and engrossing. The writing, characterization, and execution of the plot was so well done. I really love this book.
A compelling historical fiction read set during WWII that was right up my street, it made me eager to read on and discover what would happen, and I felt very drawn in to the characters' lives and cared about them and their fates.
Every once in a while you know that you’ve stumbled upon a classic. Code Name Verity might have been published in 2012, but there is no doubt in my mind that it will endure the test of time. It has the weight (although not quite the genius) of The Book Thief. I'm sure it will receive awards and critical acclaim.
Catching up on really old titles (sorry). I loved this book so much and have bought it in hardcover and paperback. Also bought copies for a couple friends. Thanks for approving my request.
A beautiful story of friendship in war time.
Don't read any spoilers. Don't read any reviews. Just obtain this book immediately and begin reading. I cannot emphasis enough how good this book is, even to those of us, who would much rather pretend historical fiction doesn't exist.
This was a book that my friends had been talking about for a while and I knew I needed to get my hands on it as well. Luckily it was here on Netgalley and once I started this story I couldn't put it down. It was so worth the hype.
"Kiss me hardy, kiss me quick!" That line resounds in my head years after I read this heartbreaking tale of bravery. The plot switches back on the reader, making their head spin, but ultimately leaves you drained, broken, and revived somehow. Beautiful.
Loved this book, great story, great writing, highly recommended. Perfect for fans of strong, interesting female characters.
An excellent telling of the involvement of women in the aviation defense of Britain in World War II. While not technically combat pilots, they flew important missions to transport planes and even some undercover work. A great read for a new perspective on the war in Britain.
I tried many times to finish the ARC when I got it, but the formatting was too difficult. I don't usually have an issue with e-books, but wasn't able to read it until it came out in book format.. Thanks.
Thank you for the opportunity to read and review CODE NAME VERITY by Elizabeth Wein. Unfortunately, I was unable to provide a review of this book in a timely fashion due to a chronic neurological condition (daily migraine headaches that intermittently interfere with my ability to read and write reviews). I deeply regret any inconvenience caused by this situation and thank you for your understanding.
