Catherine Calhoun and Elliott Youngblood meet one summer and spend every day together getting to know each other and falling in love as kids. Then Elliott is forced to leave Catherine without a goodbye. After two years, he's finally able to get back to her, but she can't forgive him for breaking his promise.
Through the past two years, Catherine has kept many secrets to herself and isn't willing to break down her walls for just anyone. Shortly after she's finally able to forgive him, Elliott is accused of wrong doings by the police and Catherine must decide which is more important to her - keeping her secrets or keeping Elliott.
I loved the characters of Catherine and Elliott. They were adorable together! Elliott was so sweet, caring, and despite his anger at times, he was just amazing. Very likeable. This book was told from alternating POVs from Catherine and Elliott, but mostly Catherine. I would of loved to see more from Elliott or even from the guests' POV! That would of been fun.
I hate to say it, but about half way through the novel, something wasn't adding up to me and I had a feeling about what the "twist" was. And I was right. Granted, I think Jamie McGuire did a good job of conveying what she was trying to accomplish, I just picked up on little subtle hints here and there.
I was so happy to have been given the opportunity to receive an advanced reader's copy from one of my favorite authors.
Rated 4/5 little lights
Every Summer Elliott Youngblood would come and stay with his Aunt Leigh and Uncle John in the small town where his mother grew up. He would come to get a break from his arguing parents. One summer, he was climbing a tree and spotted a young girl named Catherine. From that Summer, they would hang out and became the best of friends. The pair were inseparable, and Elliott found a friend with Catherine despite the growing rumors of her odd family. One Summer, Catherine arrived home to find her dad had, had a heart attack and died and to make matters worse, her best friend had gone without a word as that same day Elliott's mother Kay had come to take Elliott home. A couple of years pass, and the two loose contact, Elliott, however, had always and will forever love Catherine and made it his goal to return and move in with his Aunt so he can be closer to Catherine again. However, the Catherine he knew is gone, and this new Catherine has pushed everyone away. Can Elliott woo Catherine and regain her friendship and trust? During the book, we also read that Catherine's life isn't the greatest with her mother turning her house into a boarding home and having an endless array of visitors throughout the door. Just as Catherine is falling hard for Elliott, the mean girl Presley goes missing, and Elliott is the main suspect. Can Elliott prove to Catherine that he didn't do anything? I have to say the major twist in the end with this book, I did not see coming but after reading it - it did make a lot of sense. I will leave you with the knowledge that this book deals with Mental Illnesses and Domestic Abuse, so if that is a trigger be prepared. If you are in the mood for a book that will blow you away, then add Jamie McGuire's new May release to your must-read lists.
I went into this book completely blind and OH...MY...GOD....I don't even know where to begin. This was such a unique and creative story with lots of little moving pieces. It was a bit of a love story and a whole lot of something else.
I absolutely loved Elliot. Despite his rough family and home life, his love for Catherine and just his overall character were remarkable. Catherine was such a complex character throughout the whole book. There were so many sides to her: the caring daughter, the bullied student, the reclusive and strange girl, and the responsible, hard-working, mature beyond her years teenager.
I read this book in one sitting. It was engaging and thought provoking and had a profound ending. Wow...just Wow!!!
All the Lights was an amazing beautiful romance! It gave me chills! I couldn’t put it down! I absolutely loved it!!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own
All The Little Lights is an intriguing and chilling read. It starts a little slower than I am used to with this author but there is still enough to the story to keep you engaged and wanting to know more before gradually picking up pace. Its like this sense building throughout that there is something big just around the corner.
I found the descriptive style of writing, particularly in terms of the house and its guests to be very vivid. It felt like the house was its own person/character and gave an eerie feel to the whole setting.
This story touched on racial and other prejudices and was thought provoking in dealing with these issues. It highlights especially, people’s naivety and ignorance and how this is often passed down from parents and continued with little thought.
The relationship with Catherine and Elliot was beautiful. I loved his devotion and determination to try even knowing there was a large chance he could fail. He was beautifully besotted with her without it passing into creepy/stalker territory. Catherines love for all those in her life including her mum and the guests was both beautiful and unhealthy but showed a real sense of loyalty and a nurturing heart.
I can see myself recommending this book to others. It is so different from what is around at the moment and combines dark suspense with a sweet love story in a unique way.
*Thanks to Netgalley and Publisher for ARC*
I was so surprised by this wonderful book. I love Jamie and her stories. I was not expecting this book at all. I have read most if her bioks and this one drewme in andbheld me hostage until i finahed it. It is a definite five star read and one i reccomend highly. Although i was expecting aomething different, it did not disappoint. Live Elliot and catherine. Their story is a inteiguing, spellbinsing story for all to read
Oh. My. God. What did I just read?!?
Seriously dying over this book. Just when you think you know what’s going on, you’re wrong. You’ll eventually think you really do have it figured out this time but guess what??? Wrong again! I neglected all my responsibilities (apologies to my 6 year old for the last minute birthday cake...) I seriously could. Not. Stop. Reading. I just had to know what the heck was going on.
I’m usually pretty good about figuring out the ending ahead of time, but this one freaking blew me away. I literally stopped at the turning point and went back like “wait, what? WHAT??”
It’s a must read. Huge kudos to Jamie for not rushing the story along, I love when a book is clearly given equal attention from the first to the last chapter.
I received an ARC for an honest review. This book was very interesting. I knew it was going to be a love story but there was so much more than the love between Catherine and Elliot. It is a dual POV book. I really liked seeing each of their perspectives. The mystery is something that is quiet twisted. The secret that Catherine has to keep really puts the entire book in turmoil. Elliot was such a sweetheart. He wasn’t the perfect boy and that is what made him so realistic. He had his faults but he knew that he did and was always trying to be better. His devotion to Catherine was incredibly sweet. I would for sure recommend this book. When it comes out you really should buy it and read it immediately.
The story of 2 kids with a bit of a crap life. Fighting parents, jobs lost, hardly no friends. And they find solace in each other.....which turns into more.
Although it felt like it dragged in places, it was beautiful. I really loved Elliott and Catherine.
'His words felt like a sunrise, a sunset, a beautiful dream, waking from a nightmare. It was every wonderful moment balled into one.'
But that secret though....never saw that coming in the slightest!!!
I was provided an e-ARC in exchange for my honest review.
In telling Catherine and Elliot’s story the author touches on many topics, including racism, bullying, friendship, small town dynamics and a secret that Catherine in keeping. The secret is a rather big angle in the story and I thought at one point I had the "it" figured out, just not the why. Boy was I wrong (yet right also), that was a twist that I never would have guessed. The secret and the mystery surrounding certain things is what finally made me stick with the book and finish it after a very slow start. Overall it made the book redeeming for me. If you are looking for a good read with a twist and you can handle a slow start then I recommend you read this book. #NetGalley #AllTheLittleLights
Jamie Mcguire is the author of one of my most favorite books ever: Beautiful Disaster. So, when I saw that I received this ARC from the publisher/NetGalley, I was beyond ecstatic. I handed off our baby to my husband, and settled in on my papasan, holding onto my kindle for dear life.
The story is told in first person point of view, alternating between the main characters, Elliot and Catherine. I did notice that there were more chapters from Catherine's POV compared to Elliot's, and I found myself wanting more of the latter. Elliot and Catherine meet in early high school, but were separated due to family circumstances. When they reunite during their senior year, they try to make their relationship work, but secrets and mysteries prove to make things difficult.
In comparison to Jamie McGuire's other books, I found myself not as invested in Catherine and Elliot's relationship, but I'll admit they do have their cute moments. The book started off kind of slow, when we were introduced to how Elliot and Catherine met. In the second half of the book, things really picked up. There were hints at something Catherine was hiding about her family/home, which was really intriguing! I found myself not being able to put down my kindle because I just had to find out what the gosh darn secret was. And boy, it did not disappoint! I had several theories as to what could possibly be so terrible that it kept her away from her friends and threatened her relationship with Elliot. ALL WRONG, btw. When it was finally revealed, I was so shocked that I re-read the paragraph several times because it was so crazy. Although it may have seem strange to other readers, I absolutely LOVED this twist. I just didn't see it coming. I don't want to spoil anything so I will stop there and let everyone read it for themselves!
Overall, I really enjoyed this book! I've read many of her other books in the Beautiful/Maddox Brothers series, and I loved them all (Beautiful Disaster is a yearly re-read for me). Readers will find, though, that this book differs a bit -- a little more suspense/mystery, with a side of romance, minus the intense angst. I would definitely recommend this book for those who want a quick read!
Now that I've finished ATLL I've glanced over some reviews. I understand that this book is quite different from a lot of Ms. McGuire's other novels. I myself feel that it shows the diversity of her writing skills and that if I wanted the same regurgitated story then I'd just reread something I know I already love.
I've seen a lot of reviews that say it was "Strange" and you know what it totally was and that's what really drew me in. I'm kinda strange sometimes and love things that are different. It was so out of the norm and nothing that I was even remotely expecting so I absolutely gorged on this book and kinda wished I had taken my time to savour it a bit more.
The secret was quite a twist. I DID NOT SEE THAT COMING!!!! When an author can throw in a twist that I cannot figure out try as I might, then you have my full attention.
I loved both Elliott and Catherine. They met at a time when they needed each other and were wrenched apart from each other at such a crucial time in Catherine's life and she doesn't find out until two years later why Elliott was torn out of her life so suddenly. I would say this was a twisted coming of age story.
All the Little Lights was absolutely brilliant in all it's twisted glory!!!!
"Falling is easy. The hard part is getting back up"
**Received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an unbiased review**
First of all, massive thanks to Netgalley and Montlake Romance for providing me an ARC of All The Little Lights.
It´s been a while since I got my last McGuire book fix so I took my sweet time with this one.
And what can I say. Sweet baby Jesus. McGuire herself said that it´s a darker- ish Young Adult story and I personally haven´t seen that much darkness in the beginning because we have sweet, sweet Elliot who is seriously is just the cutes young man ever. How he tries to get Catherine´s heart is just so, so cute.
But once your ways cross the plot twist from the book, I promise you there will be darkness. I won´t spoil anything because everyone has to go into it without knowning anything because I have not seen that one coming.
I´ll probably need some time until I´ll get over ATLL.
5 STARS!
review to come..... mistakenly clicked on the wrong book!!!!
sorry
I LOVE ALL THINGS MCGUIRE!!!!!!! Jamie McGuire did not disappoint with this YA! This amazing read had me in my feels from the very first page. This book is going to make a great addition to our library catalog and I already know some of our teen patrons that are going to love it!
Thank you Netgalley for the advance copy of this book so I could give my honest review on this book.
A little slow to begin with but once you get into it the story picks up and it held my attention and kept me interested. I love both the main characters Elliott and Catherine. A great love story, that I really enjoyed with good writing. I would definitely recommend for those who enjoy her other books and want a good romance.
Anyone who's looking into YA or NA will stumble upon Jamie Mcguire in 5 minutes. I enjoyed her previous books quite a lot and was eager to read something new! Thanks to Netgalley for this opportunity.
Sadly this story wasn't my cup of tea. While I was so looking forward, especially Elliotts Cherokee background, it wasn't much of a topic in the end. I also was hoping to get more on his photography, but again, not happening. What you get is all on Catherine, and sadly that was a girl I couldn't warm with. With the "big twist" happening I still didn't know why it was such a big deal not to tell Elliot what was happening. Many times the book frustarted me only because of the non communication.
When the big Mystery got revealed it is known that several others got killed?! But again, the writer didn't elaborated on that.
I enjoyed the writing style, as with the previous books, it is a really nice and easy read.
This book started out a little slow but really picked up about half way through or so. It held my attention because the story is super interesting and I love both the main characters but until Elliott comes back for good, it is kind of slow. Elliott falls in love with Catherine when he is like 8 and sees her through his camera lens. He sees her every summer but never talks to her until the summer after their freshman year. Catherine lives in a big huge mansion that is basically falling apart amid her parents money troubles. That summer, Elliott and Catherine spend all their time together and get really close. Then Elliott has to leave suddenly without saying goodbye on the same day that Catherine's father dies. He basically disappears for 2 years and Catherine hears nothing from him, her heart broken. Both characters are strong and even stronger together. Catherine's mom has turned their house into a bed and breakfast but she is obviously hiding something from Elliott. They get so much closer but she still will not tell him what she is hiding in her home. Elliott loves Catherine so much and stands by her and with through bullying, false murder accusations, racial slurs etc etc. I do not want to ruin the twist in the story, but it was TOTALLY unexpected! I was completely caught off guard which to me is the sign of a great novel. I had my suspicions but they were entirely wrong. A true love story, Elliott and Catherine somehow manage to deal with everything thrown there way. Definitely worth reading!
It was really a surprise to me how suspenseful this story was. Definitely one of those where there is some sort of puzzle you are trying to work out, and there are a lot of things that aren't quite right. All the Little Lights was a stay up late at night trying to finish it kind of book. And I felt super lucky to be granted an arc of it, especially with how much I love this author.
Elliot and Catherine have a very intense and strong young love. It spans over years and even being separated. NOTHING can keep them apart. They are both very serious teenagers, and go to a school that proves just how cruel kids can be. They both have family problems, and can lean on one another. Though Catherine does spend a lot of time pushing him away.
This was gripping and raw, unique and fascinating. Certainly shocking. Unexpected and fanfreakingtastic. Maybe my fave read this year.
Wow, what a phenomenal and unique story! This book is outside of Jamie’s usual genre but was so well written with amazingly complex characters, that I just devoured it! It was a strange and fascinating plot that had my mind reeling over the possibilities of what Cathrine’s secret could be and I was speechless when it was finally revealed! I definitely did not see that twist coming but it was heartbreaking. It really showed her strength as a young woman, that she dealt with it all on her own. I loved the relationship between her and Elliot and I’m so glad he kept hanging on when she tried to push him away! While the book was dark and mysterious, it still has that beautiful love story intertwined that this author is known for! It was a fabulous book that will have me thinking about it for a while, as I really really enjoyed it!
