While I enjoyed the book and loved the ending, I really had hard time getting into the book at the beginning. I think in part because the reason for their break up was taking so long to be explained and the fact that I really didn't care for Olivia for a lot of the book.
I really liked Devon and how he was such a fun loving guy yet he cared about the people in town. He was there to help when Nicola had her baby, and he was there when someone needed help. It was frustrating to see that even though he was such a great guy, the townspeople were portrayed as oblivious to his personality until Olivia came along.
Olivia's redeeming act was caring so much about her sister that she wanted to make sure there was a safe alternative for cosmetics. It was also nice to see that she did not give into her parents like in the past, but she still was a runner and really wished she had been more adult to actually talk to Devon.
This is the first book that I have read by this author and will be looking at others, especially Ginger and Logans's story! They sound like an interesting story behind their love.
Devon had lied to get into the private gathering for Carrington Cosmetics and Cohans Blissful Body care, Devon had to get himself the opportunity to ask a favor of the last woman on earth he ever wanted to ask a favor of. - Olivia Carrington- the woman who broke his heart ten years ago when she had kicked him out of her life. Devon and Olivia met in college and fell in love. But then Olivia got pregnant and her family /father put pressure on Olivia to leave Devon and get him out of her life and she followed her family wishes. Then Olivia lost the baby. But devon had propose and wanted them to be a family. Cevon knew Olivia had put her family first and not him. But this is how desperate Devon was to go to Olivia. But Olivia wouldn’t return his calls and he was running out of time. Olivia would only be in devon’s home town of Blueberry Springs for six more days. Devon needed a miracle and he needed it soon. When Devon spotted Olivia she was setting at a table and a flood of emotions hit him- loss and heartbreak. Devon had believed Olivia was different not just a rich princess type but someone who was kind, fun, and creative. Someone he could give his heart to and she’d hold it safe. But Devon had been wrong all he could see was their shattered past and she had pushed him away when they should have held on to each other tighter and been a family. Luke wa every bit olivia’s match, their worlds would line up in a way Devon and Olivia’s worlds never had. Instinct told Devon that Luke was going to propose and Devon needed Olivia to say yes before she said yes to Luke as a fiance would interfere with his fiance helping Devon’s hometown. Olivia was head of public relations relations for Carrington Cosmetics. Olivia’s father then try to intercede when Devon said he needed to talk to Olivia . Olivia’s face showed a flash of relief mixed with shock before she did a double take. A flash of pain bright and strong surged between Olivia and Devon. Olivia went and hauled Devon out of the elegant dining room. Olivia wanted to start running and never stop, She knew Luke was going to propose like their families had wanted for years and Olivia knew herself well enough she’d say yes to save her family’s business. The pain of seeing Devon there reminded Olivia just how powerfully devastating true love could be, How it could seep into every crevice of your soul breaking it wide open when you failed. She didn’t love Luke which meant he was a safe perfect choice. Devon had just finished a run and was going home to get Al for the cooling down phase of hsi run when Devon sees Olivia;s Porsche in his yard. Olivia wanted to make an all natural lipstick that didn’t make people sick. Devon’s ex girlfriend Jill had a found a new strain of Valerin but this strain had not been tested by Carrington Cosmetics and it was what Olivia could use to ,make her product line of All You according to Jill. The current mayor had made arrangements to have a big dam constructed that would totally change Blueberry Springs. Devon is running for mayor but people won’t see past his wild ways when he was younger. Olivia and Devon come up with a way to help downplay the negative P R they had been getting and that was to falsely become engaged. This will help Devon to win and become mayor. Old feelings start to resurface.
I enjoyed reading this book. It was an easy enjoyable second chance romance book. I like the plot and pace. I choked up at times and chuckled at together times while reading this book. I hated how olivia’s family especially her father pressured Olivia so much that she pushed Devon out of her life when they were young. I advise you to read the prequel to this book first- The Promise as you will understand Olivia’s and Devon’s relationship a lot easier. This book kept my interest from beginning to end. I loved olivia and Devon together. I also loved the surprise ending. I really liked the characters and the ins and outs of this book and I recommend.
The Surprise Wedding is really a continuation of The Promise where Olivia Carrington and Devon Mattson met and dated in college. Things ended bitterly between them because of pressure from her family, owners of Carrington Cosmetics. She was taken away from college by her father and enrolled at Harvard. Devon had a family emergency that took him away about the same time. Present day-ten years later-Devon interrupts a business retreat the Carrington company is holding at a resort a few hours away from his hometown of Blueberry Springs, Colorado. He has a business proposition for Olivia and her company, one he hopes will benefit them both. Olivia is developing a new organic cosmetic line and a plant grows outside Devon's town that he thinks will work for her. But will she hear him out and check out the plant? The current mayor has made arrangements to have a dam is built that will destroy the businesses in the small town and will also flood the land where the plant is. Devon is running for mayor and hopes to stop the dam but he needs Olivia's help. Olivia and Devon really loved each other and haven't gotten past those feelings but neither realizes how the other feels. In fact, they have no interest in getting involved with each other. The time gives them the opportunity to deal with their past and maybe get some closure while working together to save their own interests. This is a sweet story of healing, forgiveness and moving forward but there are many obstacles along the way. Others don't want a resolution and will not stop to end their efforts fail.
Thanks to Jean Oram for the opportunity to read this story through NetGalley. The opinions stated are my own.
Emotionally thrilling, sweetly sexy, highly entertaining second chance romance with a fake not so fake fiance twist. Very enjoyable reading.
Devon Mattson is a sweet, charming and sexy hometown boy that never dreamed he would be fake engaged to the one women that broke his heart to save his small hometown. Olivia Carrington is a sassy, sexy, sweet and determined woman looking to save her family company. She never dreamed a fake engagement to the one that got away a decade ago would be the solution. Looking forward to more Veils and Vows.
This is such a good book. I am so glad to see the author start a new series in Blueberry Springs. It is so wonderful to catch up with some of the characters tears I her previous books. In this book Devon Mattson is trying to get Olivia Carrington to talk to him about a plant he thinks she can use for her new cosmetic line that is all natural and won’t hurt women. Unfortunately they had a bad break up in college and haven’t talked for ten years. They both have been trying to get over the other. He finally breaks into a meeting her company is having at a retreat and is able to talk to her. She comes to Blueberry Springs to see what Devon is talking about. This starts a precarious relationship.
There are many variables affecting their relationship. There is a mayor race going on that Devon is in. The current mayor does not play well. There are protestors regarding a dam that may be put in the town. Olivia had an old family friend that is ready to propose to her, and so much more. I just loved the book and how I felt a part of the town. I was so happy to see Devon and Olivia talking again and learning to trust again. It was heart wrenching finding out what happened to the two that broke them up. I strongly encourage you to read the book. I was given a copy of the book to read.
Cute
What I liked:
The writing style
The characters
Part of a series: Veils and Vows
Standalone
HEA
I look forward to reading the other books in this series.
Wonderful Story! A second chance romance filled with heartbreak, hope and redemption. A great start to the new Veils and Vows series! Devon & Olivia story is sweet, sexy, romantic and heartbreaking at times. My favorite line in the story was "Somewhere between your world and my world is our world". That line just melted my heart and pretty much says what this story is all about, bringing two worlds together and working through life's minefields to get to the HEA!! Can't wait to read the next story!!
Cute run of the mill romance. Pretty predictable but enjoyable just the same.
This was a sweet romance that was very well written. The characters are fully developed and easy to like. Devon and Olivia have a past that has left both uneasy about seeing the other. The coming back together is hesitant, awkward and humorous. It can also be heartbreaking at times. The surprise at the end of the book was great! I can't wait to read more of the series!
A cute story about second chances at romance and in life choices. Olivia is looking to save people lives by developing a line of non-toxic cosmetics. Devon is hoping to save his town by bringing in a new business possibility. The major obstacles; her family, his election opposition and their past failed romance.
Although this romance uses the old faithful fake engagement plotline, it is a fresh look at that trope. Devon and Olivia have unfinished business from their past and they both need to make changes in their present that they can't seem to see on their own. There is nice chemistry between the two and a minimal amount of spice. The secondary characters add a lot to the story and even give some teasers for future books. This is my first book by Jean Oram and I look forward to reading her other ones.
