I tried to get into this one but I just couldn't. I loved the first 2 books in the Kiss of Deception series but the 3rd one just wasn't what I was expecting. So maybe that is why I just couldn't do this one. I might give it another try in the future but for now I am just going to have to say it wasn't for me.

This book was an absolute blast to read! I definitely think I missed out on some things since I haven't read her Remnant Chronicles series but it didn't hold me back from enjoying DANCE OF THIEVES. This story was all over the place in the best way and I was hooked from start to finish. Definitely going to be picking up the sequel as well as her other series!

A new series from Peason is always cause for celebration, and this title launches a new series that takes place in the universe previously created in "The Remnant Chronicles".

Conceptually high concept fantasy, it can be a little hard to get oriented. Although set in the Remnant world, this novel follows different characters. But once you get over the introductory hump you are thrust into high-stakes adventure with a searing romance attached.

This is a promising launch of a new series.

I DNFed this at 24%, which breaks my heart because I love Mary and I LOVED the Remnant Chronicles. Well, until book 3. I hated the third book. I was so excited to come back to this world initially, but as I was reading it I realized I was mourning what could have been. I missed my characters from The Kiss of Deception. The massive infodump in the beginning just overwhelmed and demotivated me and I didn't want to read a book set in this world without those original characters. Can I have a do-over?

This review will go live on The Blogger Girls on December 16th, 2019.

First of all, I loved The Remnant Chronicles, but I loved Dance of Thieves more.

Dance of Thieves is set six years following the end of The Beauty of Darkness, and while Jace a Kazi are new characters, there are several cross over characters and many spoilers of The Remnant Chronicles.  Therefore, I would not recommend skipping Remnant.

The story starts off fast, Jace and Kazi are the biggest of enemies and they are forced to work together from the beginning.  I couldn’t decide who I wanted to one-up the other more: Jace or Kazi. Kazi is a badass heroine and Jace’s downfall is he is a little too trusting.  Plus, there is no love triangle!

There was a lot of historical information surrounding the queen and events between the kingdoms from The Remnant Chronicles.  An unfamiliar reader will likely be confused and not recognize the importance of many key details. So start with The Kiss of Deception.  If you’ve read them and at least liked them, then definitely read Dance of Thieves.

Damn that ending!

“Blink last.”

OMG this book was STUPENDOUS. The characters were so well thought out and the interactions between them were believable. These were fully fleshed out humans on the pages and no matter how you felt about their whys you always BELIEVED in them. This book is also PERFECT as a stand alone book but i'm thrilled it's a part of a series because I want more and more and more. It's a perfect three acts.

Definitely add this to your reading lists and your classrooms.

I LOVED Dance of Thieves! It was so much fun to revisit the world of The Remnant Chronicles! The only thing I will say is that I wish I had re-read the Remnant Chronicles because there were tiny details that I felt like I would have caught or remembered a lot better had I re-read it. Anyway, I loved seeing a different part of the world with different characters. The hype for this one kept saying it was essentially like a mafia in a fantasy world and for some reason, the two concepts just didn't overlap for me. I was really pleasantly surprised to see a mafia-esque family and I loved seeing the interactions between the family and seeing them through an outsider's, as well as an insider's, eye. I immediately picked up book 2 so I could finish this duology.

The only thing I will say is that sometimes with both series, Remnant and Dance, at times it felt like the story dragged. I'm not exactly sure what could have been done to rectify that but sometimes I just couldn't wait to get to the next big thing.

Jase and Kazi come from very different worlds. Jase was raised to be the next Ballenger ruler, and has always believed he has the best interest of his people in mind. Kazi grew up an orphan taken in by a queen to train as an elite force, but she is forever looking for revenge against the one who took away her mother. Together, they might just make an unstoppable force, if they can ever trust each other to get beyond their differences.

I've been an ongoing fan of Pearson's for quite some time, and LOVED Kiss of Deception. This book is perfect for fans of the Remnant Chronicles who want to return to that world. Plenty of intrigue, danger, and romance, this one is a great next read for previous fans, and for those who love a good tale.

Jase and Kazi...swoon! My heart couldn't take their romance! Enemies-to-lovers is a personal favorite of mine, and I love how this book sort of twisted that around so it was like enemies-lovers-enemies-?? :) You have to read it to see how that bit ends!

I loved how the action began with the two of them being snatched away, needing to lean on each other to survive, because the focus on the two main characters made me absolutely fall in love with them. The plot sort of reminded me of The Godfather meets Romancing the Stone meets Six of Crows. The writing was absolutely beautiful and it was different to any fantasy I've read before--I definitely recommend it!

I haven't read The Remnant Chronicles (need to!), so it took me a few chapters to grasp the world, but if you have, I'm pretty sure some side characters come from that series so you'll really enjoy their appearances.

I got this one from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review :)

I love that Mary gives us a great build of a world such as this. I didnt know this was attached to another series until after reading this book. I love the romance in this book and I honestly can't wait to read the sequel. I read this book so fast, that I felt like I couldn't give it a complete review. I am hoping to reread since book two is out and leave a better review up on my Blog. I can honestly say I did love the romance, the world and the building of these two characters

I'll start by saying I love Pearson's writing style and The Remnant Chronicles was such an important series when it was released for me personally. It was a very difficult time in my life and was able to escape in them. I enjoyed the trip back into this world, glimpses of past characters and getting to know Jase and Kazi better. I'm a sucker for enemy to lover stories and this did not disappoint! Purchased a copy for my library as I know the teens will love this next installment.

This book is not the best young adult fantasy ever written. It isn't the most unique plot line. However, it has an adorable romance and a super fun feeling to it that made me enjoy it. This is a fantasy heavily rooted in the romance, so if that is not your thing, then I would stay away from this one. If you do enjoy fantasy heavy on the romance, then you will love this. The romance is super cute and develops logically.

If you’re a fan of the Remanent Chronicles, I do recommend you pick it up if you’re new to Mary E Pearson. If you haven’t read a The Remanent Chronicles, then you need to pick up that series first to understand what is happening in this book.

The writing in this book was beautiful. It flowed and made it easy for me to read. This was my first time experiencing this world and I want more!!! I will definitely be re-reading this and doing a more thorough review

I loved the way the author built up this world and the characters. I don’t typically like the idea of dual perspectives but in this novel it really helped to develop the plot.

Wow. I re-read The Remnant Chronicles books so I'd be prepared for this, but I still wasn't. Maybe because I didn't get to it right away and then I put it off some more because I was sure it couldn't be as good. But it was! Definitely different but set in the same world as TRC, just maybe a decade few years or so later. Familiar faces and familiar places but also new characters you'll care for just as much. I hope to review this in full soon, but suffice it to say, my expectations were surpassed.

I tried for a week to read this, but I had to DNF it in the end. I felt that the writing was way too detailed and fluffy for my liking, the characters were greatly detailed to a fault, and I was confused about the timeline. Normally, the detailing wouldn’t be a bad thing but I didn’t make it past page 40 and I felt like I knew these characters way too intimately for the time being. I was just so overwhelmed by the book and by detailing. I was also deterred by the slow pacing and overall confusion. The book shifts between the past and the present and it’s really hard to read casually.

Verdict: This book was too much for me.

Dance of Thieves was one of my favorite books of 2018, and made my Best Of list. As much as I liked the Kiss of Deception series, I found this spin-off even more compelling, and am eagerly awaiting the second book.

Dance of Thieves by Mary E. Pearson tells the story of Ten who has been an impressive thief since she was ten years old. She’s now a soldier for the queen and goes by the name Kazi. She encounters Jase, who has recently been made ruler due to his father’s unexpected death. Kazi and Jase become prisoners together when they are captured by labor hunters. The two of them are very similar in personalities and demeanor and at first, they drive each other crazy. They’re both clever, strong and loyal with banter that is fun and intelligent. With Kazi’s thieving background, she helps orchestrate their escape. Their relationship gets more complicated and more interesting from there. The story also becomes more complex, bringing in the backgrounds of Kazi and Jase and adding side characters and different kingdoms’ ideals and history. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Kazi and Jase and being on the sidelines of their tumultuous relationship. With interesting side characters and wonderful world building, I sped through the book and the ending left me wondering and anxiously awaiting the sequel! 5 solid stars!
