*Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me an ARC in exchange for an honest review.*
WOW. Why had I not read any Mary Pearson before this?
This book is amazing! If you like The Wrath and the Dawn, Roar, or Carve the Mark you will LOVE Dance of Thieves. This is a fast-paced story stocked with lies, spies, and intrigue. It contains a slow-burn romance, undercover agents, assassins, a bit of gangster-like family vibes, and violence. It feels like a fantasy with a dash of western.
I was hooked from the beginning. Kazi and Jase are a fascinating duo to watch, and the background characters are strong and unique. You constantly have the feeling that you know almost everything, but there's just one detail that's escaping you but you have to know so you keep reading, but Pearson never reveals everything - just wow. Read it and be amazed.
I had a few complaints throughout the book, but they were resolved as the story progressed so I really can't pick at anything.
Absolutely fantastic! "Dance of Thieves" is a really wonderful YA fantasy that takes place in the world of 'The Remnant Chronicles' complete with some mentions of the former characters. While I think some knowledge of the original trilogy helps, this new book is a separate story focusing on new characters. Kazimyrah is a talented thief in Venda, known as Ten, because she still has all her fingers, and thieves are caught at least once and forced to loose a finger in the process. The Vendan Queen found Kazi and brought her to the palace to train as a Rahtan, the elite soldiers of Venda.
Kazi's life was forever changed by this, and she is now on a mission from the Queen with her compatriots, Wren and Synove. They find themselves in an unrecognized kingdom of sorts, which is ruled by the Ballengers, of which Jase has just become the Patrei or ruler. As they approach the Ballenger lands, they come across a Vendan settlement which has been torn apart in violation of the treaties. Aside from their mission, Kazi and team are set on justice, and in the process, more happens than they ever could have expected. During a confrontation, Jase and Kazi are captured to be sold as human cargo, setting them off on a series of adventures and twists/turns.
Although I found the beginning to be slow, I was soon absolutely caught up in Kazi and Jase's story, and burning through the pages. The two main characters plus many of the side characters were well-developed and absolutely endearing. I was fully invested in their lives. Ultimately, my only complaint about this book is that it ended! The (albeit fictional) history and imagery was absolutely incredible, and I found the whole world enthralling. Add to that the slow-burning romance, and this one is an absolute winner for me!
I absolutely recommend it, even if you were on the fence with the Remnant Chronicles. This one has a very different feel and is absolutely a wonderful read for YA fantasy lovers! I will also say that this one has a pretty good conclusion with an opening for the next book, so it didn't feel too cliffhangery (though there's still a big hook for the next book). I can't wait to get my hands on the rest of this series!
Please note that I received an ARC from the publisher through netgalley. All opinions are my own.
I have a soft spot for Mary E. Pearson's books. She's a master at worldbuilding and angst, and her other series sent me over the roof with feels. Naturally, I was eager to get my hands on this new series set in the same world!
In short, I loved it, but I will say it was long and took me a while to get my bearing. Since it's been a while since I've read her other books, I had a hard time figuring out where I was in the world. To be honest, I'm still not entirely sure where the new country/land is - but I imagine the final book will have a map! I also had a hard time remembering the ending of the series (who ended up ruling where) so I suggest doing a quick once-over of the finale if you're coming from the other books.
While this book starts off with an entirely new cast, I was delighted to see old characters on the side. As far as the new (main) characters - this is told in a dual POV. The first is Kazi, a member of the queen's Rhatan, and Jase, a leader struggling for power in a new land we've never seen before. The beginning felt mostly like backstory on the two main characters, so it lagged a bit for me personally, but when Kazi and Jase collide, things really take off!
As always, Pearson writes characters with depth and heart, and you'll find yourself falling for both Jase and Kazi. When they meet, they hate each other -the makings of a perfectly good story. Basically, the queen sends Kazi to a semi-contested land (basically one family rules it, but the borders are unclear). They believe the captain who betrayed Morrighan is hiding there under the protection of said family. So, Kazi is supposed to fish him out and bring him back to the queen for justice. However, when Kazi runs into Jase, they have a... skirmish of sorts that I wont spoil... and both end up being kidnapped and hauled away by a slave trader.
That's all I'll say about the plot. Be prepared - the book is looooong. But that means plenty of room for betrayal on multiple levels, and angst like you wouldn't believe. I did wish the pace was a bit snappier but I can't deny the richness of the world and the details put into the characters. And as always, I loved Mary's writing!
If you're a fan of the Remnant Chronicles, definitely give this one a go!
I really enjoy her writing style, its easy to follow without giving everything away or feeling like she is just telling you the story.
I read this book without being familiar with the Remnant Chronicles. I am, however, a big fan of the Adoration of Jenna Fox books. Enjoyed the characters and the world Pearson had created. I can not believe the teaser at eh end! Can't wait for book two - when exactly will it be in my hands?
This is another novel set in the same world as The Remnant Chronicles. While I, myself have yet to read that trilogy, this book reads as its own novel. I was super eager to read this arc as I’ve been wanting to buy The Kiss of Deception for a while now. I previously read her book(s) The Adoration of Jenna Fox, so I already knew I was in for a wonderfully written novel. I really loved Mary Pearson’s world building to this book! it totally blew me away. I could tell that her writing skills have sharpened and this book brings all new adventures to the table!
I felt that the characters were fun to read and very diverse. Each character has beautifully woven layers and brings a punch to the story. All the characters kept me plenty engaged in this novel. I really loved the romance in this book and thought it was well done without being over the top. The action was just the right amount as well.
After reading the ending I have to say…I need book two NOW, like yesterday…What kind of ending was that to leave me with.. I’ll l just be over here in the corner sulking till I can read book two….
5/5 Stars.
This book is the exact dose of the Morrighan Chronicles that I needed. It was great catching up with the characters and meeting all the new member of this universe.
This story was a lot of fun. I was glad to be back in the Remnant world Pearson created- she has such a knack for sucking the reader into the story. I loved the new set of characters, especially Jace :) My only (super minor) complaint is that (minor spoiler!) this is a whole new set of characters, which I knew beforehand, but I was still hoping for the original cast to feature more prominently in the story.

I fell back into the world of the Remnant Chronicles so easily. New characters and new lands, defying genre just a bit. Post apocalyptic high fantasy mafia romance is not something you come across every day.
As I have had to say far too often lately, eagerly awaiting the next book.
Love this author!! This was a great read, the world is the same as her previous series, Kiss of Deception, but you don't need to read it to follow this book. The characters were great, plus the side characters were so much fun(and you get to see some familiar faces from her previous books). The world building was great and the characters were awesome, this book totally had me sucked in from beginning to end! Would really recommend.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for sending me a digital ARC of “Dance of Thieves”. I loved the Remnant Chronicles and I couldn’t believe it when I heard Mary E. Pearson was putting out two more books in this series. The world building is absolutely fabulous! It is set in a world I was already fascinated by and just continues to hold my attention. Mary E. Pearson writes the way I would imagine sitting in a forest with a slight wind, beautiful smelling flowers, and dryads dancing about would fee like. Her writing and atmosphere is pure beauty. I will be purchasing a copy for the library and can’t wait to share this story with students! Plus I love the cover. Very simplistic but elegant at the same time.
A wonderful new entry into a much loved world. For those that have loved Pearson's other works, this one will be no different. It has all the elements of the past novels, with a much welcomed new maturity that both loyal and new readers will appreciate. The obvious comparison is to Six of Crows, and while both have some overlapping ideas and plots, there is not much else in common. This novel stands on its own and it was SO MUCH FUN.
I am so confused by that ending but I can't wait to see what it all means in the next book!
I haven't read The Remnant Chronicles but I am not a fan of the Jenna Fox books, so I was a little bit leery going into this one. Although this story has an extremely predictable plot, except for that dang ending) I really enjoyed this book. You don't know until the end just who is playing who in this action-packed story filled with conspiracies, double-dealing, and betrayal. The author does an excellent job of world-building and I loved Jase and Kazi's loyalty to their perspective kingdoms and each other. Overall, this was an intriguing read and I can't wait to see what that baffling cliffhanger leads to in the next book.
Mary Pearson is one of my top favorite authors so I had a pretty high expectation for this one... and it didn't disappoint! This book was amazing! The plot, the characters, the pacing, the writing style, were all superb! I highly recommend it!
Everything I wanted! Everything I needed! I appreciated that although I have read the companion book trilogy to this, it's not a necessity to have done so. New readers of this author will love this just as much as familiar fans will.
I now hate ARC's. How can I possibly wait this long for book 2? Although this is set in an existing world from a previous Trilogy it is not necessary to read those first.
As a fan of Mary Pearson, I had high hopes for this novel. It did not let me down. The Remnant Chronicles is one of my favorite series & I cannot wait to see what the author has in store for the books that follow in this series.
Took me a few pages to get back into the Remnant Chronicles world then I was fully immersed. Another book that was hard to put down from Mary Pearson. Lots of action, plot twists and a great romance. Everything I love in a book! Ready for the next book NOW! (Please :))
Oh wow! I didn't know this book was going to have the same world and characters as the remnant chronicles. Loved that! Author did a superior job in character development of jade and kazi. Loved both of them and the supporting characters especially the ones from past books like Eben. Well written and paced. Definitely will read more by this author.
I loved the original Remnants trilogy, and when I heard that another book in that world was coming out, I was beyond exciting. Jase and Kazi were both well-developed and interesting. Usually, one of my biggest pet peeves is when all problems can be traced back to characters' refusal to have a conversation with one another. Granted Jase and Kazi had secrets from each other, but they had valid reasons for it. Then the last page blew my mind- I can't wait for more!
