Grace is 42, Bradley is 30, they work together and go out for drinks one night. One thing leads to another and they have sex. And that leads to another thing-Grace is pregnant. They like each other, but neither was ready to commit. The story goes through their journey on whether or not to go through with the pregnancy, will they be together, and how their lives will progress. It's a quick and fairly easy read. But the thing that struck me is that this came out in 2018, and there is a lot of matter of fact discussion of abortion. It was a time when it was assumed that women had the right to control their own bodies, and that a decision made 50 years ago would not go backwards. Really scary and terrifying how things can change in such a short time. #bookstagram #susankietzman #itstartedinjune #reader #lovetoread #womensrights #rightochoose #vote #readersofinstagram #booklover #bookrecommendations #bookreview #lovetoread #booksbooksbooks #readallthebooks #takeapagefrommybook #bookblog #bookloversofinstagram
Fast read with interesting characters. Modern day story about real relationships & babies & careers. Hard to put down!
I liked this book okay. The writing was clear and the characters well developed. I think the story line itself was what I found not as interesting.
There was a lot of emotional upheaval, positive and negative family relationships, and life-changing decisions that filled up the pages in this book. There were times I would gasp out loud and other times that I would find myself on the edge of tears.
Rachel was a manipulative, irritating, arrogant, self-absorbed, family destroying female. And while Bradley's life suddenly changed based on one rash decision, he was hesitant to be committed to the situation in which he found himself. He needed to grow up and take responsibility for his actions.
Grace was a much more mature and put-together woman. But she had her own emotional baggage she was dealing with...which she does attempt to do. Grace's maturity allows her to not be intimidated by others. And even though she holds Bradley's feet to the fire, she comes to grips with her true feelings and reaches out to others to get advice and feedback.
While this wasn't one of my favorite books, the author does a good job with her writing style and the character development. Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I was provided an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
Grace Trumbull is a forty-two year old vice president at a media company, divorced and childless by choice. She and thirty-year old Bradley Hanover are assigned to work together and a night of drinking leads to a very steamy encounter in the backseat of her vintage car. They decide to continue seeing one another outside of work and their fledgling relationship is rocked when Grace discovers she is pregnant. Even more shocking is her decision to have the baby but she leaves it is up to Bradley to decide what role, if any, he will have in his baby’s life. Grace is surprised by his decision to stand by her and be an active participant in raising their child, but will their relationship survive such an inauspicious beginning?
I had a hard time connecting to the main characters as a couple and although saw growth in Grace as a woman and mother it was hard to feel excited about this book.
Grace is a 42-year-old woman who is happy with her career and doesn't want kids. When a night of fun with a 30-year-old end in a pregnancy she's unsure what to do. Bradley although 30 is a little too involved in his parents and their opinions. I found his family over involvement so irritating and I just wanted to skip over the parts. This was a decent read, it just had some really frustrating moments.
This was a different read for me. The blurb sounded interesting, hence I wanted to read this. Grace at 42 years, after a night of intimacy finds herself pregnant. Grace had never wanted to have children and her friends advice her to have an abortion. Bradley her partner at 30 years was too immature, for me, in this book. Though both of them stick to the relationship and give it a go, it just felt superficial for me.
I wanted both the characters to grow to develop into fabulous parents, and to show relationships can happen at any age. I wanted deeper emotions.
To some extent I liked both the characters, but I wanted something more from this book.
This is the story of Grace and Bradley. After drinks in a bar one thing leads to another and one impetuous night leads to a life altering change for them. Grace has made life choices that change in an instant and Bradley’s immaturity makes him seem uncommitted. Grace soon embraces her new life, while Bradley has a rough start of it, which causes Grace to wonder if she can do it on her own. This was a good read.
This is a sweet story of one woman who is successful and just received a great promotion. She is happily child free by choice and loves her life of freedom and satisfying career. She unfortunately has a one night stand after a torrid night out that results in a unplanned pregnancy . She is in absolute shock with the decisions she has to make. She is also mid life so this is a terrible dilemma for her. Her decision to keep the baby involves her with the Father and as they navigate their choice it becomes apparent to her that her life is forever changed.
A very nice story of two people very different brought together by a terrible circumstance that altered their preferred life choices.
Thank you for the ARC which does not influence my review.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story of Grace and Bradley. Both working at the same company. After working late they find themselves at a bar and then a little fun in the back of the car. That one night of fun will change their lives. Grace is older the Bradley, divorced and childless by choice. Bradley is young, carefree and enjoying his life. Now they find out that they will be parents. The choices that need to be made. Grace was raised by her grandparents, not in a loving home. She was the product of a young unwed mother. Bradley was raised by two wonderful professional parents. Grace has decided that she wants to keep to the baby, and will do it on her own if necessary.
I really enjoyed these characters and the growth that they take in their relationship, through out the book you don't know if the relationship will work out or not. Loved Grace's house on the beach. This is a light read that I recommend for summer reading.
3.5 It’s Complicated Stars 🌟🌟🌟.5
Grace sure had a complicated life... at 42 she was divorced and fully engrossed in her job, having just received a promotion.... after one night of fun with Bradley( younger coworker) Grace finds herself pregnant... having never wanted children, what is she to do now? Add in her mom‘s negative thoughts towards motherhood and Bradley’s overly involved parents, and you really have quite the mess!
Grace was in a tough spot, absolutely... however I found her character a little hard to connect with... Bradley, despite the fact he was 30, he really was very immature.... why his parents had such a big part in what was going on was beyond me.... i’m sure once my kids are 30 I will still want to offer advice, but I can’t imagine it will go much beyond that... not to mention that Grace was a mature 42-year-old that pretty much had everything together, with this exception....
This was a decent enough story, it just never completely captivated me... I did appreciate Grace’s character development and choices throughout the book....
*** thank you to the publisher and Net Galley four my copy of this book ***
A hardworking woman fully dedicated to job is given assignment to collaborate with a young professional coworker. They begin to work together - spending hours and hours working together.
So, they decide to take a relaxing break ...truly relaxing with the other.
Surprise pregnancy brings up unresolved feelings for both.
She was a product of an unwanted pregnancy - makes her intent on being better.
He comes from a loving family who was expected and loved.
As meetings with parents and friends and coworkers happen the news spreads
making the buried and hidden feelings surface and must be dealt with
for the future to be brighter for all involved.
Multi viewpoints gives the whole story for everyone in circle.
I recommend this book!! It is a very enjoyable read!
I found the book to be somewhat uninteresting. I would try more by the author. I think another topic would be a better fit for me. I did enjoy the author's style - very character driven.
This book is about a successful, older, divorced woman named Grace. Her childhood was not the best and she made a decision to never have children.
After a night of drinking too much with a younger co-worker, Bradley, Grace discovers she’s pregnant.
I enjoyed this book but did not like the abruptness of the ending.
Grace and Bradley have an impulsive sexual encounter that changes both their lives- and this novel is about what happens next. You know this plot but Kietzman has found some new angles. Grace is 12 years older than Bradley (who really is very immature for a 30 year old). Both of them have family and friends you'll recognize and in some cases really dislike. There's never really a question that Grace will have the baby so watching these two build a family is at the core of the novel. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. This is diverting women's fiction with a positive message.
I really enjoyed this book. It’s the first one I read by this author.
My favorite times of the year are spring and summer. My favorite authors all publish books with a summery theme. This book fits right in to that catagory.
I will look forward to more books by this author.
It Started in June is a novel about Grace who is an "older" woman that falls for a "younger" man at work. Then she gets pregnant. She never wanted kids so it was a shock to all of her family, even her ex-husband. I had a really tough time following this story. I was easily confused and I just could not connect to any of them. I thought i could keep going but i gave up at 49%. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for this complimentary book. All opinions expressed are my own.
Grace Trumbull (the older woman) and Bradley Hanover (the younger man) become pregnant after a quick fling one night. Even though Grace has never wanted children, she decides to keep the baby. Even though Bradley seems to want to be involved, he is still not sure he is ready to settle down. Through ups and downs Grace and Bradley grow to see what is important in life.
I enjoyed this book, but both Grace and Bradley seemed a little immature. Some of their actions (especially Bradley) seemed like something that a much younger man would do-like seeing Rachel and taking off for 30 days. Good romance, but not great!
I loved the premise of the older woman/younger man! But the witches in the book (Shannon, Rachel, Robyn, and even Dorrie) were such a drawback. I see how some of their roles were to provide a foil..but it just doesn't completely work. The last 25% of the book felt so rushed and with the big glaring error (how could he check his phone while with Rachel if it was home with Grace?????), Bradley going off on a wilderness adventure with no scenes for 30 days and Grace just wanting to hold on to his parents to make them her own - just lame.
This is my first time reading and reviewing a book before its publication, and I only have high praise for it. It's my second title by Susan Kietzman, and although this story is totally different from the one she tells in Every Other Wednesday, I got thoroughly engrossed in this one, too. I really enjoyed the different perspectives given to the unexpected and life-changing event that happened to Grace, the main character. I read this book on my tablet, so was able to take it everywhere in my purse. I even overshot my subway stop once because I was paying more attention to the story than the announcements. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys totally plausible stories about modern women, the choices that confront them, and how they decide to handle difficult decisions. Thank you Susan, for allowing me to be an early reader of your new book.
It Started in June by Susan Kietzman
Starts out with Grace and she's now divorced, 42 and just want sto concentrate on her new posiiton that Paul had given her a new position with the company, a senior VP.
She is used to hard work and gets it done right the first time.
Also follows Bradley who has found Grace on the social media sites so he knows she's single. He will be under her command as they work on the latest assignment, the mariatime museum campaign.
At drinks after working late she relaxes and smiles to the things he's saying and they end up in the back seat of a car later.... the boss doesn't condone office romance nor does Grace....
She confides in her girl friend ...she's his supervisor and the condon had broken...
We also learn of her birth and her mothers dating in high school...
Grace knows she has to mend fences with her mother and with the soon to be mother in law she discussed the choices.
Bradley discusses the plans with his parents and they feel they should have a say into what happens and they are both doctors: a pediatrician and a phycharist.
I feel he's 30 he should be able to make up his own mind about the situation.
They combine households as it'll be easier to take care of the baby together and give it a rial run before the event.
Tiring parents and one makes a slight error and they part and you wonder if they will repair the damage done...
Received this review copy from Kensington Books via Netgalley and this is my honest opinion.
